Selecting The Right Roof Materials in Pittsburgh, PA
When selecting roofing materials for Pittsburgh, PA, it's essential to consider the area's climate, which includes cold winters, moderate rainfall, and potential snow accumulation. Durability, longevity, and the ability to withstand varying weather conditions are key factors. Here are some of the best materials for roofing in Pittsburgh:
1. Asphalt Shingles
Why it’s Ideal: Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material in Pittsburgh due to their affordability, durability, and versatility. They provide reliable protection against moderate weather conditions and are resistant to water, wind, and snow.
Pros: Cost-effective, widely available, easy to install, and low maintenance. They also come in a variety of styles and colors.
Cons: They may not last as long as other materials like metal or slate and can be susceptible to damage in severe storms.
2. Metal Roofing
Why it’s Ideal: Metal roofs have become increasingly popular in Pittsburgh due to their durability and ability to handle heavy snow and ice. They are energy-efficient and can reflect sunlight, helping to reduce cooling costs in the summer.
Pros: Extremely durable, long-lasting (50+ years), fire-resistant, lightweight, and low maintenance. Metal roofs also provide excellent resistance to harsh weather, such as hail and heavy snow.
Cons: Higher upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles, and noise during rain or hailstorms can be an issue without proper insulation.
3. Slate Roofing
Why it’s Ideal: Slate is a traditional choice that is highly suitable for Pittsburgh's historic architecture and offers unmatched durability. Natural slate can withstand harsh weather conditions and has a lifespan of over 100 years with proper maintenance.
Pros: Very durable, visually appealing, and fire-resistant. Slate also adds value to homes and provides excellent insulation.
Cons: High initial cost and heavy weight, requiring additional structural support in some cases. Repairs can also be more complex and expensive.
4. Clay or Concrete Tiles
Why it’s Ideal: While not as common in Pittsburgh as other materials, clay and concrete tiles are suitable for homes with a Mediterranean or Southwestern style. They are durable and weather-resistant, providing strong protection against rain and snow.
Pros: Extremely durable, fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and aesthetically pleasing. They can last for over 50 years with proper maintenance.
Cons: Heavyweight, expensive, and installation can be labor-intensive.

5. Cedar Shakes and Shingles
Why it’s Ideal: Cedar shakes offer a natural, rustic appearance and are popular in areas with homes that have a classic or rustic design. They are durable and provide good insulation against cold winters.
Pros: Eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and offers natural beauty and durability. Cedar has natural preservatives that make it resistant to insects and decay.
Cons: High maintenance requirements, higher cost compared to asphalt, and vulnerability to fire unless treated.
6. Synthetic Roofing Materials
Why it’s Ideal: Synthetic roofing materials, like rubber or composite shingles, are becoming more popular due to their cost-effectiveness and resemblance to natural materials like slate or wood. They are lightweight, durable, and can handle Pittsburgh’s weather conditions.
Pros: Cost-effective, lightweight, low maintenance, and available in a variety of styles and colors. They are also impact-resistant, which is ideal for areas with occasional hailstorms.
Cons: May not last as long as natural slate or metal roofing, and the aesthetics may not appeal to everyone.
Recommendations:
For most Pittsburgh homes, asphalt shingles or metal roofing are the most practical choices due to their affordability, durability, and weather resistance. However, homeowners looking for a long-term investment or a historic aesthetic might consider slate or cedar shakes. Additionally, synthetic materials are an excellent option for those seeking a blend of affordability, aesthetics, and durability.
When choosing a roofing material, it's crucial to consider factors like the home’s architecture, budget, and long-term maintenance. Working with a professional roofing company like Buccos Roofing can help in making an informed decision based on specific needs and conditions.

This 1962 mid century modern in Pittsburgh, PA looks small, but it's very large inside. The 3bd, 1.5ba, 1,128sqft home is pretty reasonably priced at $339k and is already under contract.
Enter a foyer with a large coat closet.
This is what makes the house look deceivingly smaller- as you enter, you go down stairs and there are 2 levels below.
Past the closet in the foyer, there's an accordion door to the kitchen.
I like the original kitchen, especially the yellow cabinets and mosaic counter.
On the entry level there's also a dining room off to the side, and a door to a deck.
Talk about a sunken living room, look at how far down this one is. There's the original brick fireplace in the corner.
This room gets lots of light thru 4 glass doors that open to a terrace.
The primary bedroom is nice, the bedrooms aren't oversized, but they're good sizes.
These stairs lead down to the lowest level where the rest of the bedrooms are.
This room is kind of odd- what are those glass windows for? I would think that a bed would go between the columns, but what is the glass for?
The .5 bath is located in the hall and has a new sink, and you don't see many half baths with room for a hutch.
This room is on the level below the living room. Look at how long it is, and it also has sliders to a terrace. It's likely meant to be a family room.
Interestingly, the 3rd bd. is located under the stairs. It also has doors to a terrace.
This is the one full bath. It has quite a large linen closet, which is nice.
Two of the terraces. This home has quite a few terraces for the bedrooms, which is a nice feature.
And, this is the deck, off the dining room, with some lattice panels for privacy, and a roof cover that can use replacing. 9,714sqft lot

Sources said Crooks was was planted on a roof of a manufacturing plant more than 130 yards away from the stage at Butler Farm Show grounds.
Moments before the suspected shooter opened fire at a Donald Trump rally, crowd members can be heard yelling, “He’s got a gun.”
The gunman believed to be behind the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump has been identified as 20-Year-Old Male who was in a sniper position when the shots were fired at the rally.
The alleged gunman, who has since been killed was in a sniper position far from the crowd, Trump campaign sources told the outlet.

Why is Chimney Pointing and Gutter Installation Crucial?

Driven by the high prevalence of chimneys in residential and commercial properties and a strong awareness of chimney safety, North America holds the largest share of the chimney repair services market (Source). This indicates that a large proportion of people consider chimneys to be an important part of their homes.
Do you remember the last time you had your chimney and gutter repaired? A sturdy chimney ensures the comfort and safety of your home and goes beyond a decorative feature, while a gutter helps in draining water efficiently. Imagine being cozied up by the fireplace on a chilly evening, when suddenly you notice water stains creeping down your walls. Besides being a mood spoiler, it is a warning sign that your chimney’s pointing might be damaged. For years, the Pittsburgh skyline has been graced by its distinctive brick chimneys, standing tall and proud. But have you ever wondered about the challenges that are faced by these architectural features?
So, are you ready to discover when you should consider chimney pointing in Pittsburgh along with a gutter replacement, and give them the attention they deserve? Let's dive in then!
Warning signs that your chimney needs repair
Want to know when to repair your chimney? Here are the signs:
Cracks in the chimney
Have you noticed spacing between your chimney bricks? It’s probably because of damaged mortar, as it is supposed to secure the bricks together. Although there are various reasons for mortar joints to crack, the main culprit is water or moisture, which enters through the small gaps and then expands after freezing. If the mortar is not repaired, the chimney will eventually collapse, having a huge impact on the roof as well.
Unpleasant odours
Is there any weird and unpleasant odour coming from the fireplace in your home? It can be due to several reasons, such as:
Soot accumulation (black or brown powder)
Creosote build-up (tar-like substance)
Excessive moisture accumulation
Animal debris
In such a scenario, seeking professional assistance early on is the best possible choice as it will ensure the issue doesn’t worsen. Are you looking for chimney and roof repair in Fox Chapel? Get going without further delay.
Deteriorating mortar
Although mortar and brick are known for lasting long, they do eventually break down due to aging, harsh weather, and exposure to moisture. From discolouration of its appearance to crumbling of the mortar, the deterioration will intensify sooner or later. To avoid any undesirable situation, get the chimney inspected, and if required, consult with a contractor for brick repair in Pittsburgh.
Box gutters: What are the benefits of installing?
Are you looking for a gutter installer in Pittsburgh, PA? Here’s why you should consider going for box gutters:
Efficient draining
Besides being wider and deeper than other styles, these are appropriate for flat-roofed commercial buildings. They can collect a huge amount of water runoff during monsoons or storms, help keep water away from your roof, and prevent foundation of your home.
Blends perfectly
Want to install a gutter that can blend into your home’s architecture? Box gutters, often known as “concealed gutters,” can complement your house structure and fit in seamlessly.
Superior durability
These are designed to last and are less likely to break or leak. Plus, you can have it customized to match the style of your home, and it is even more resistant to sagging.
Wrapping up
Whether looking for roof repair in Cranberry or roof replacement in Upper St Clair, a reliable and professional contractor will ensure the best services. Get in touch with WM. Prescott Roofing and Remodelling and transform your home like never before!

Why Reliable Roof Replacement is Key for Pittsburgh Homeowners
When it comes to maintaining your home, one of the most important factors to consider is the condition of your roof. In Pittsburgh, where the weather can be unpredictable and harsh, a reliable roof replacement service is not just a luxury but a necessity. Here's why homeowners in Pittsburgh should prioritize timely and trustworthy roof replacement.
Protection from the Elements
Pittsburgh experiences various weather conditions throughout the year, from heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures in winter to intense rain and thunderstorms during spring and summer. These changing conditions put tremendous pressure on a roof, leading to wear and tear over time. A roof that has reached the end of its lifespan may show signs of leaks, missing shingles, or other damage that can compromise your home's protection.
Investing in reliable roof replacement Pittsburgh, PA ensures that your home is fully protected from the elements. A new roof provides a durable barrier against rain, wind, snow, and extreme temperatures, safeguarding your home and belongings.
Prevention of Costly Repairs
Delaying roof replacement can lead to more serious and costly problems. Small leaks, for instance, can quickly escalate into significant water damage, leading to issues with your home's walls, ceilings, insulation, and even the foundation. In some cases, a failing roof can contribute to mold growth, which can have serious health implications for you and your family.
A reliable roof replacement service can help you avoid these costly repairs by identifying problems early on and offering solutions that prevent further damage. In the long run, replacing an aging or damaged roof may save you thousands of dollars in repair costs.
Increased Home Value
If you plan to sell your home in the future, having a new roof can significantly boost its market value. Potential buyers will appreciate knowing that they won't have to worry about roof repairs or replacements for many years. A new roof can make your home more appealing and help it stand out in a competitive market like Pittsburgh's.
Additionally, buyers often see a well-maintained roof as a sign of a well-maintained home, which can influence their perception of the overall property. A strong, reliable roof is often a key factor in decision-making.
Energy Efficiency
An old, damaged roof can make your home less energy-efficient, as it may no longer provide adequate insulation. Gaps, leaks, or worn-out materials can let air escape, causing your heating and cooling systems to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature. This can lead to higher utility bills and unnecessary strain on your HVAC system.
A new roof, especially one with energy-efficient materials, can improve your home's insulation, helping you save money on energy bills while keeping your home comfortable throughout the year. This is especially beneficial in Pittsburgh, where winters can be long and cold, and summers can get quite hot.
Peace of Mind
Knowing that your roof is in good condition provides peace of mind. As a homeowner, it can be stressful to worry about the potential damage a failing roof might cause. A reliable roof replacement service ensures that you have a roof you can trust to protect your home and family. You can rest easy knowing that your roof will withstand the Pittsburgh weather and keep your home safe and dry.
Roof replacement is a significant investment, but it's one that can pay off in multiple ways. For Pittsburgh homeowners, reliable roof replacement is essential for protection against the elements, preventing costly repairs, increasing home value, improving energy efficiency, and offering peace of mind. Don't wait for problems to worsen – ensure that your roof is up to the task and enjoy the lasting benefits of a sturdy, well-installed roof.

1861 church in Pittsburgh, PA has been converted to condos. This one is a 3bd, 3ba 2,445 sq ft multi-level unit. $499,900 + $440mo. HOA fee. We saw another unit in this building last week, but this one is very different and less than 1/2 the price.
This is the main entrance and lobby for the units on this side of the building.
I like that they kept a lot of the original brick walls. And as soon as you open the doors, you see them.
In the living room there's a lovely spiral staircase.
The spacious kitchen is part of the living room.
It's a real cook's kitchen with professional appliances.
Also facing the kitchen they have a desk in the steeple area.
Coming down stairs, there's a stone fireplace on the lower level. The flooring is original and so is all the wood.
A large family room is under the upper floor and while it looks like a loft, they chose to cover it, so it's not openly visible.
This looks like a 1/2 bath.
The primary bedroom is large and has a transom over the door.
The ensuite features glass block and also houses the washer/dryer.
There's a 2nd, larger spiral staircase.
This bedroom is very big. That door is interesting, it kind of looks like an old safe door.
The toilet and sink are in here.
But, the jetted tub is separate.
There's a small patio and grassy area in front of the building.
The units on this side of the building have terraces, but the ones on the other side have roof top decks.
