Saint Mary’s College High School is a co-educational college preparatory high school operated by the De LaSalle Christian Brothers, which have operated schools on the same site since 1903. For the past 35 years, the school has been without a dedicated chapel and has utilized classrooms and the gymnasium/auditorium for the religious functions that are integral to Saint Mary’s mission.
Perched on a street corner at the outer boundary of the campus, the rise of the sleekly articulated white concrete building serves as a focal point of the campus ‘— symbolizing its faith, embodying its values and beliefs, and displaying the mission of the school.
The new 4,400 sqft chapel seats 200 people within a sacred space for communal worship and learning, as well as private prayer and reflection for the religiously diverse student body. The Chapel stands among mature trees on a gentle hillside and by the flowing water of Cordornices Creek. The exterior of the Student Chapel includes an entry courtyard, a meditative garden, a reflecting pool, and a Grotto, with a mural devoted to Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The Chapel experience begins with the approach: A walk along the length of the building, flanked by an articulated white concrete block wall, provides a transition where noise from the adjacent streets fades as you approach a small courtyard at the rear of the building. Here, a shallow pool beside the door marks the threshold with the soft reflection of light on the water’s surface. The courtyard offers a moment of pause before entering the explicitly liturgical space ‘— a representation of the client’s hope that the restoration felt within the Chapel could inform students’ everyday lives.
The design of the Saint Mary’s College High School Student Chapel utilizes simple forms and materials that relate to the existing buildings while distinguishing it and its unique role on the campus. The heart of the building, the Chapel, is conceived of as a non-denominationally spiritual space where all occupants feel welcome and a sense of connection within themselves and others.
The Chapel, entered from the back looking toward the Altar, is framed by a curved split-face stone wall that is washed with light from the tower and light monitors above. The quality of light is ever-changing with the passage of time. The window walls on the south and west, including a large folding glass wall by the courtyard, both visually and physically connect the Chapel to the views and sounds of the surrounding nature.
A clerestory ribbon along the north wall brings a soft glow throughout the day as the roof appears to float above the light. A wood louver wall along the south side and entry path welcomes light and views toward the west, while also minimizing the distraction of passersby. Support spaces built into the hill flank the central worship space.
The materials palette includes just a few predominant natural materials. White concrete lends the Chapel a sense of permanence and provides a backdrop to the play of light and shadow from the surrounding trees. Limestone on the floor provides an inviting surface that rises to create the backdrop for the Altar. Oak on the interior brings warmth and softness to a place whose intent is to comfort and calm its occupants. Collectively, the powerful and durable palette crafts a sacred space for the school’s community for many decades to come.

Albany watches her best friend's jaw drop. "Oh, shit," Peyton whispers. It is quiet, but in the silence of the room, it seems to echo and vibrate the very air. Kieran does not look away from his best friend, expectant. Sybil stares back, defiant. She knows what Kieran wants, and for some strange reason, she will not give it to him. Her eyes fall away from him and onto the girl's body. Sybil frowns, unimpressed with what she has found. Cecily smiles secretly into her coffee mug. "Nice dress," Sybil announces after a thousand years of silence. That is all she will give. She isn't rude enough to ignore the guest in her house, but she will not lie and welcome Kieran's girlfriend with open arms. She does not like her. "Thanks," Ruby smiles nervously, running her hand across the red maxi dress draped across her long limbs. She can sense something is wrong. Kieran's jaw is clenched as he stares at Sybil, understanding the message. She does not look at him as she turns on her heel and makes her way into the kitchen, popping down some toast. Cecily bites her lip to hide her smile and looks down to her lap, letting her hair cover her grin. Albany leans against the wall in the opening of the hallway, studying the new girl in Kieran's life. Tall and thin. A contradiction to Sybil's shortness and her gliding curves. "Sybil-" Kieran starts. "Kieran," Sybil does not turn around, "Are you taking your girlfriend out for breakfast?" Peyton's small and amazed gasp comes from the lounge as she witnesses Sybil's attitude. She sips her tea as she watches Kieran's eyes harden. "Yes," his voice is nearly a growl, "We are." He closes the front door so hard it can almost be considered a slam. Silence settles. "Are you fucking kidding me?!" Sybil yells to the roof. Cecily chokes on her coffee as she finally snorts, and Albany sighs. "I hate her for you," Albany decides. ----------------------------------------- "Sooooo," Peyton's voice is slow and slightly nervous as she settles herself down on Sybil's bed, her hands wrapped around the warmth of her mug. This is her second cup of tea today. "What's going on? Talk to me, Syb." Sybil does not look up from her desk, "There's nothing to talk about." Peyton frowns dubiously, "There is. How do you feel about Ruby?" "Nothing. She's pretty." "....and?" "And nothing. I couldn't give a fuck about his girlfriend." Peyton rolls her eyes. ---------------------------------------------------------- "Let's go out!" Albany dances into view as she leans against Sybil's door frame. "No thanks," Sybil calls, her voice blank. Peyton winces. Oh no. Numb. Albany makes a face at Peyton behind Sybil's back, and Peyton shrugs. "C!" Albany calls down the hallway, "Should we all go out?" "I don't mind!" Cecily calls back, distracted by the TV. "See?" Albany nods, "Cecily is dying to get out of the house. Can we go shopping?" "No," Peyton groans, flopping back on Sybil's bed, "I don't feel like shopping." "I'll shop," Sybil stands, nodding slightly to herself. Peyton's groan is elongated and dramatic. Albany frowns at her even after Sybil makes her way out of the room, preparing to shower. "You're so extra." Peyton only laughs. ---------------------------------------------------------- "How about we steal her dress?" Sybil shakes her head as she holds a deep blue sun dress against her body, testing it out, "Her dress would probably be too small for me, anyway. Stupid giraffe." "Why don't you like her?" Peyton calls from the change room, "I mean, I hate her, of course. But why do we hate her, again?" Sybil sighs as she drops her hand and the dress back into her lap, "Because I hadn't even heard of her before I met her today! Kieran has not uttered one word about her! We are friends. Friends tell each other when they are seeing people romantically. How the hell does he just forget to mention something like that for nearly two months?" "TWO MONTHS?" Albany chokes, "They've been a thing since June?" Sybil shrugs, "Apparently the beginning of July, just before P's birthday." "How dare he introduce his girlfriend just before your birthday, Sybs?" Cecily shakes her head in disgust as she comes out of her change room, and Albany swaps with her, nodding in agreement. "I know, right!" Sybil nods, huffing, "I wanted to go away for my birthday with everyone, and now Ruby has to come!" "She doesn't have to come," Peyton calls from the change room, "Just tell Kieran no." Sybil frowns to herself, thinking, "No," she sighs, "Because he would have let Miles come to a personal celebration if he knew it would have made me happy. I can't be that much of a bitch." "Yes, you can," Albany scoffs as she exits her change room, swapping with Sybil. "Sybs," Peyton's voice is soft as is vibrates through the thin piece of wood between them, "Is there a reason you care so much?" Sybil does not hesitate, "He is my best friend. I hate when he has girlfriends. I feel like I lose a piece of him." "Oh," Peyton replies quietly, "Okay." ---------------------------------------------- "She hates her," Kieran's feet pace endlessly across the wooden floors of his kitchen, and Hutch watches his shoes scuff the floor in disdain. "You're going to scratch the floors," he announces blankly. Kieran only turns to scowl before forcing his body to still. He swings open the fridge and glares into it's contents as if it is Sybil. Hutch sips his beer in silence, waiting. "I just don't understand why she couldn't even give Ruby a chance. She just looked her up and down and decided no. How the hell is that fair?" Hutch shrugs, taking another sip. He runs his hand through his hair, playing with the thick waves. They feel nice against his skin. "It's not fair," Hutch replies, his eyes fluttering closed as his head falls back against the couch, "But it's Sybil. She's made her decision, and I highly doubt you are going to be able to change it. You might as well break up with Ruby now." "I'm not breaking up with Ruby," Kieran's voice is fierce, and Hutch blinks his eyes open to stare. Damn, he is stressed. "It was a joke, Kier." ------------------------------------------- "So," Albany's eyebrows are raised in curiosity, "You're at my apartment again. And I don't know why, because I didn't invite you here." Her twin brother shrugs, his golden hair shining in the light of the hallway, "I was bored, and I've recently rediscovered how dramatic you girls are. It's like watching a TV drama." Albany throws a froot loop at his head, and he scowls at her as it hits the ground. Albany looks down at the the abandoned cereal, "Can you pick that up? Peyton just vacuumed." Sybil strides into the room with determination, eyes only on the apartment's blue tooth speaker. "Hi Mason," she calls as she connects her phone, "What are you doing here?" "Looking for some gossip." Sybil releases a humourless laugh, and Peyton, from her point on the couch beside Cecily, whispers a saddened oh no. "You want some gossip?" Sybil calls just before pressing play, "The number one guy in my life has a number one girl in his life and it is NOT me." The song begins to play; Sybil's go-to song. "The plot thickens!" Mason yells, triumphant. A handful of froot loops hit his face. ----------------------------------------- "Maybe we should go on a double date?" Kieran's voice slurs slightly from the beer as he smiles at his best friend. Hutch shakes his head quickly, "Nope! No double dates!" "Why?" "I used to go on a lot of double dates with Albany and Finn when Cecily and I were together." Kieran's eyes sober slightly, and he gulps before nodding, "Okay. No double dates." "Besides," Hutch sips his beer again, enjoying the taste of it washing down his throat, "If I go on a double date with you and Ruby then I'm going against Sybil. That is a war I don't want to get caught in." "It's not a war." Hutch skulls down the rest of his beer, "Not yet." ------------------------------------------------------- "Where are the girls?" Cliff asks, burying his head in the crook of Peyton's chest. She squirms against the couch, ticklish. "Albany and Cecily are watching TV in Cecily's room, and I think Sybil is sitting in there with them reading." "She's reading while they're watching a loud TV?" "I think she just wants to be distracted, but not by her own thoughts." "Kieran got a girlfriend, he didn't kill my entire family!" Sybil yells exasperatedly as she enters the kitchen. Peyton yelps in surprise. She did not know Sybil could hear them. "I'm fine! I'm not upset. He can do whatever the fuck he wants to do with his life!" "Ooo!" Cliff sits up, intrigued, "But you don't like this new girl? Why?" Sybil glares for a few moments in silence. She suddenly opens the front door and leaves, slamming it in her wake. They sit in silence as they stare at the door in shock for a few minutes. "Where is she going?" Peyton stares at the door for a few more moments. Worry sings through her, but she ignores it. Sybil does not want people around her. "She's going off to calm down." --------------------------------------------------- Kieran opens the door, blinking in surprise. "Hi," she whispers up at him. The smile is slow to his face, "Hi," he whispers back. She refuses to meet his gaze, unusually nervous, "I couldn't sleep, and I'm in a bad mood. Can I spend the night with you?" Her big eyes blink up at him, "We can watch movies all night?" Kieran nods once, opening the door wider for the girl he would do almost anything for, "Let's do that." She smiles as she slips in past him, hand resting against his chest for a moment. It is warm. Kieran watches her settle herself down on his couch, somehow at home. She folds a cushion over her lap and snatches up the remote, "What should we watch?" She calls. Kieran can only stare for a moment. Sybil always chooses the movie without his permission, loudly announcing that she wants to watch the movie and there is nothing Kieran can do to stop her. He is not used to picking the movie. She looks up at him, blinking curiously. "Kieran?" Ruby calls, confused, "You okay?" He blinks, and Sybil's dark hair and burning smile disappears from her spot on the couch. Only Ruby stares back at him. "Yeah," he croaks, pushing thoughts of Sybil's gaze away, "I'm fine."

"What are we looking for, exactly?" The shelf behind Cecily seems to wobble suddenly, and Albany's light and running steps echo on the shining floor below her feet. Cecily does not glance away from the object in her hand as Albany's arm hits hers. "Try not to get us kicked out," Cecily murmurs as she reads the label on the packet. Albany remains silent, sheepish. She watches Cecily stare at the packet in her hands for quite a few moments. Cecily fights the urge to smack her and tell her to go find another object to stare at. A trolley rolls past them. Quiet remains. "I reckon Sybil will refuse to put those in the cupcakes," Albany muses finally. She's right. Sybil would demonstrate a riot if Cecily made her put these decorated toothpick signs on the cupcakes. "But they're so pretty," Cecily sighs, putting them back on the shelf and slowly walking on, forming a pros and cons list for those sticks. She will get them if she has to. If she is willing to argue with Sybil about it. She's not. "I mean, they're sort of the ugliest thing I've ever seen, but that's okay Ce." Cecily throws a glare Albany's way as she finds her way back to the trolley and wheels it on. "Why did I bring you? You're honestly so annoying." Albany snorts and picks up a snow globe as they walk, shaking it carefully. Cecily's eyes fall upon the sign up ahead showing where the party directions are. She turns the trolley in that direction. Albany follows quietly, her eyes on the globe. "I'm so excited for Christmas," she murmurs sadly to herself. Cecily rolls her eyes as she finds the maze of bright colours and balloons. The amount of regret she has for bringing Albany on this shopping mission is indescribable. She bites her lip to keep from informing Albany that she wishes her best friend would have said no to Cecily's offer to take her to the shops. "What colour theme are you thinking?" "I don't know," Cecily hums, almost to herself, as her blue eyes trail along the garden of streamers and brightness. They're all awfully pretty. "How about gold, because she's a queen." Cecily ignores Albany. "Or white because her skin is so pale." Cecily clenches her jaw and turns into the next aisle. "How about black because Peyton always wears black?" Cecily closes her eyes for a moment. "Or red because she likes that colour." Cecily wheels her trolley on. "We could go pink because she's a girl." She stops by a pink balloon packet and studies it. "Colours are genderless," Albany's voice is a clear mockery of Sybil's. Well, not clear. "Let's screw the gender roles and go blue." "That's not screwing the gender roles, Albany." "Whatever, let's go blue." "Mmm, no." Albany stomps a foot and releases a shuddering sigh. Cecily's frustration builds ever so slightly. It is nearly overflowing. "Well, then what colour are we going?" Cecily is silent for a minute. Perhaps two. So many that Albany becomes frustrated herself. Good. "Black and gold. That's nice." "I said both of those things and you kept walking!" "Because I hadn't decided what I wanted yet." Albany's entire body seems to sag in a clear illustration of her impatience as she groans, "I hate shopping with you." "Then you should have stayed home." "You invited me!" "And I regret it so much right now, honestly." Another sigh. -------------------------------------- The door thumps open and hits the wall so hard Peyton flinches. In the doorway stands a silhouette of curves and curls. Peyton presses play again as Sybil strides her way in and throws herself onto the couch beside her. Her head lands on Peyton's thigh as she sighs, and Peyton glances down momentarily to study her dark curls. "You should close the door," Peyton advises absentmindedly as she falls into the plot of her movie again, ignoring her best friend. Sybil's hand comes to press against her cheek as her fingers form a vulgar gesture against her skin. Peyton does not glance away from the screen. They sit in silence for a few minutes as Peyton watches the movie and Sybil stares up at the ceiling, lost in her thoughts. Eventually, Sybil sighs again, "I got in trouble from my mum for not having introduced Miles to everyone. She went on a fucking half an hour rant about how I have no appreciation for her guidance and support as a mother. I swear I nearly threw a glass in her face." Peyton pauses the show and glances down at her best friend. Usually Peyton would rest a hand upon Sybil's forehead and offer her comforting words and a smile. She'd make Sybil laugh to take her mind off it or just let her rant. But Peyton is tired. And, quite frankly, not okay. So she does none of those things. "Why haven't you introduced Miles to the family?" She asks instead. It takes only a moment for her to regret the words. She hopes with everything within her that Sybil does assume it is an interrogation and lock her emotions away. That would be bad. Then it would be two of them suffering in silence. 346 does not need any more hurt. Peyton's is enough for the four of them. Sybil clenches her jaw before responding, her eyes on the roof. The front door remains open, "I don't know." Silence settles. The words slip out before Peyton can stop them. Again. "You introduced Kieran to your sisters after a week." Sybil's eyes darken. Oh, no. Peyton should not have said that. Not at all. She opens her mouth to explain, or apologise, or joke, but nothing comes out. She watches the anger flare to life in her best friend's brown eyes and something like fear sparks up within her. "What the fuck is that supposed to mean?" "Nothing." Everything. Some things. Many things. Peyton is not sure. Sybil sits up in a blur of burning eyes and spinning bodies as she faces Peyton, her eyes narrowed. "Why the hell are you comparing Kieran to Miles?" "I wasn't," Peyton blurts, "I was just-" "You were just comparing one of my best friends to my boyfriend. As if they are the same," Sybil's voice becomes cold. Peyton fights the urge to flinch. No, dammit. Sybil's going to slip away for a while. "Why would they be the same?" Peyton sighs and tugs on a piece of her hair, frustrated. The stress seems to wash over her in a wave. She hadn't meant to start a fight. She isn't in the mood to deal with Sybil's burning ice. "Don't get mad. I'm just saying that Kieran is someone important in your life and-" Sybil shoots to her feet, her face a deadly calm. Peyton really should not have pushed her. She was already breaking. Now she's broken. "Stop," she spits, icy anger flinging from her lips, "Stop comparing Miles to Kieran. They're different. Stop thinking that Kieran is my prince charming because he is NOT. He is Kieran, not my damned soul mate! Let that shit go, Peyton, because I care about Miles and I need you to support me instead of pretending that I'm going to realise that Kieran is my perfect fucking match. Because I'm NOT. He is a friend and that is ALL HE WILL EVER BE." Peyton cannot fight her flinch. Or the anger that builds within her. Or the guilt. Sybil is right. She had never looked at Miles without comparing him to Kieran. She had never considered the possibility of Sybil's future with Miles, and she had not bothered to get to know him. She had ignored the way Sybil looked at her boyfriend in favour of the way she smiled at Kieran. She had not even tried to support Sybil. Oceans crash. Oceans upon oceans upon oceans. "Nice speech." Peyton's lips had not spoken those words. A devastating moment of something horribly forever passes. Something shatters within Sybil's face when she recognises Kieran's voice from the open doorway. She spins to face her best friend, her chest suddenly heaving with breaths. Kieran stands in the hallway, his hair a mess and his red shirt crinkled, as if he had thrown it on quickly before running down here. As if Sybil had texted him about her horrible lunch as she was coming home and he had been ready to comfort her. Peyton's breath hitches. She had not seen him there. He had heard everything. "Kier," Sybil breathes, something like horror bleeding through every syllable, her eyes on the male in the doorway, "Hey." He nods a greeting, his blonde curtains shaking in front of his forehead as he does so. A soft smile drifts upon his face, and his eyes shine with something soft. Sybil sees right through it, though, and her face falls. Guilt flashes across her dark eyes as she spots Kieran's clenched jaw. "How was your lunch?" His voice sounds awfully blank. "Good," Sybil's voice shakes slightly. Kieran swallows and nods slowly, his eyes on anything but her. His hands find their ways into his pockets as he stands awkwardly. Something hits Peyton. This is the first time Kieran has ever looked uncomfortable around Sybil. Sybil's hands come to hold each other behind her back. Peyton watches the way her skin goes white from squeezing so tight. As if punishing herself. "Okay," Kieran nods again, taking a step back, "That's good." Sybil goes so still that Peyton believes she may be caught in time. Forever. Kieran always knows when Sybil is lying. When Sybil lies about her stability or her happiness, Kieran catches the words and twists them into truths. He makes her open up to him. Every time. Except this one. "I better go, then," his head seems to be stuck in a cycle of up and down and up down. He takes another step back. Sybil barely nods. As Kieran begins to disappear, he seems to pause and backtrack until his eyes meet Sybil's again. They burn with something Peyton cannot place. "You know, I'm completely aware that we're just friends. And I don't have feelings for you, so I'm relieved that I'm just your Kieran," his words falter for a moment as he thinks, glancing at the floor. Sybil does not take her eyes off him. She nearly flinches when he looks back up at her and she recognises the hurt simmering in his gaze. "But you don't have to talk as if the concept of being with me is something that deeply disgusts you. No matter how platonic we are, shit like that still hurts, Sybil." Silence settles. He disappears without a word. Sybil seems to stare at the doorway for a thousand years, trapped in her memories of his flashing pain. Her face is dangerously blank. After nearly five minutes, Peyton forces herself to speak. "Sybs-" Sybil does not glance back as she leaves the room, bag in hand. The door slams closed so hard that Peyton flinches. ------------------------------------------- "I'm proud of us," Albany announces as they wait silently in the elevator, a thousand bags in their hands. Albany studies them. Black and gold. Nice. Cecily nods absentmindedly, tired, "Yeah, we got quite a lot." "Is this all we need for it?" Cecily shrugs and nods, releasing a small sigh, "Hope so, because I'm not getting anything else." Albany nods and decides not to push it. Something was wrong with Cecily today. Sure, she had her usual frustration, as she usually does when she shops with Albany, but after an hour or two, something shifted. Cecily's annoyed sighs and clenched jaws turned into blank eyes and slow blinks. She disappeared for quite a while, and Albany still isn't sure where she went. Albany felt something close to fear sing within her when she turned into the aisle and found an empty shell instead her best friend. Cecily lost herself inside her own head, and Albany could do nothing to bring her back. Something is wrong. "I think it'll be a great birthday party," Albany finally speaks as they reach their floor, "We can all celebrate in 346 and then go out and get wasted together." Cecily nods to herself as the doors begin to open. They both freeze when they find Sybil standing in front of them. Albany's face begins to crack into a smile until she finds Sybil's dead eyes and her fluttering eyelashes. What is wrong with everyone? "B?" Cecily asks quietly, worry twirling through her tone. The most emotion she has expressed all day, "What's wrong?" Sybil's gaze falls upon Cecily, and when it takes her a few moments to focus and recognise her own best friend, panic kicks Albany in the gut. Something is very wrong. Cecily finds the storm, too, for her voice is firmer. Sybil needs a clear voice to snap her away from her crashing thoughts. "Sybil," Cecily demands, "What is wrong? Where are you going?" Sybil moves to the side, giving Cecily and Albany room to step out of the elevator. They do, ready to hug their best friend. But just as the doors of the elevator begin to close again, Sybil slips her way inside. Cecily swears softly as Albany drops her bags and lunges for the doors. She doesn't make it on time to force them open, and all she can do it stare into Sybil's broken eyes as they begin to disappear. "Sybil," she warns. "I'm fine." Sybil drones at the same time. "I don't know when I'll be back." "Sybil!" The doors close. They stand in shocked silence for a moment as the elevator makes it's way down. Albany spins to face a wide eyed and pale Cecily. "What the hell do we do?" She whispers to her blue eyed best friend. Cecily forces a shrug, "I don't know," her voice shakes slightly, "I don't think she'll talk to us if we track her down." Albany closes her eyes for a moment, worry clanging and banging off each of her bones as if it is composing a song of stress and panic. Sybil never says she's 'fine'. Sybil also doesn't like talking about her feelings. With her decision snapping to place in her mind, Albany bends and scoops up the bags, glancing at Cecily. "I hate talking about my emotions as much as Sybil does. She won't want someone coming after her and interrogating her. We'll just have to wait for her to think and calm herself down." Cecily hesitates a moment before nodding. "How long do you reckon it'll take her to calm down?" Albany shrugs as they make their way down the hall, "A few hours at least." "And a few days at most," Cecily whispers. Silence settles. Cecily continues to stare at the door. "I don't want to go in. What if she fought with P?" Albany shrugs and swears softly, "Then that'll suck." Cecily's fear falls away as she snorts. She takes a deep breath as she opens the door. Peyton sits upon the couch, frozen. Her gaze stares into the distance, as if searching for an answer to a problem. She looks tired as all hell. "Hey," Cecily's voice is kind as she rests her bags upon the kitchen bench. Albany follows suit, careful not to snap Peyton into a fake smile and a nodded okay. She hates when Peyton pretends to be okay. "What happened?" Albany asks softly. Peyton glances up at them and shrugs softly. Cecily makes her way to the couch as Albany grabs Peyton's designated mug from the bench. Tea. She needs to make tea. "She left the door open," Peyton sighs finally, her breath shaking, "But I shouldn't have said what I said. I'm sorry-" "Don't apologise to us," Cecily whispers as she folds herself onto the lounge beside Peyton, "We weren't even there." Peyton nods absentmindedly before taking a deep breath and explaining again, "Sybil was already breaking. And then I broke her a little bit further. And then Kieran shattered her." Albany's hands freeze. "Kieran?" She cannot keep the shock from her voice. Peyton shrugs and lays back on the couch, her stress falling away. Peyton makes it fall away. "I don't want to talk about it." Cecily's eyes flash with worry, but she nods. "Okay. But we're here if you want to." Peyton nods, "Okay." Albany glances down at the tea. Worry swirls within her gut. Worry for Sybil. Worry for Cecily. Worry for Peyton. This all seems unfair. Why are all of her girls breaking?

"Ziplining?" Peyton frowns uncertainly, folding herself down in the corner of the couch. Pizza hangs in her hand, drooping over her wrist. She catches it at the last second, lifting it above her mouth and munching thoughtfully. Sybil's eyes flick to Cliff, and she catches his eyes sparkle as he watches the girl he loves in her own world, lost in her own thoughts. It takes him a few moments to gather the strength to drag his gaze away, and when he does, his cheeks bloom as red as roses. Sybil tries not to swoon, and instead settles for smiling softly as she bites into her own piece of pizza. Kieran's gaze meets hers, sitting on the couch beside Peyton, and he raises his eyebrows at Cliff. She smiles a little wider knowing that Kieran catches everything between Peyton and Cliff, too. She trained him well. "Ziplining sounds exciting," Finn calls from the open plan kitchen, standing behind the bench as he chews his own pizza. He chose to stay in there beside Albany, his love for pizza nearly matching her own. "Mmm, I don't know, Sib," Cecily says, skeptically, "Sounds terrifying." She sits on the other side of Kieran, her own legs folded beneath her as she absentmindedly flicks through channels on the TV behind Sybil and Miles. Sybil opens her mouth to reply, but her words falter as she watches the shadows and colours of the television flicker to life against Miles' pale skin. He sits comfortably on the floor beside her, his elbows resting on his bent knees as he politely listens to the discussion. His silk hair falls back against the nape of his neck, curling slightly at the ends, and the muscles in his back shift under the light as he breathes. She fights the urge to run her hand along his illuminated skin. "Turn the bloody TV off," she snaps, dragging her gaze from Miles, lunging forward and grabbing the remote from her surprised friend. She snaps the TV off and ignores Miles curious stare, his violet eyes bright and clear. Cliff, on her other side, frowns slightly at her in suspicion before resuming the conversation, "I think it'll be fun." "I don't really want to wake up early, though," Albany groans from the kitchen. Sybil snorts, "Well then it's officially settled, then. We're doing ziplining tomorrow morning simply because Albany doesn't want to." Peyton glances between her two friends, her eyebrows raised, fighting her smile, "I mean, if Albany has to suffer then I'm in." Sybil giggles, and Miles' breath hitches at the sound. "I fucking hate you guys," Albany mutters from the kitchen, and Finn laughs softly. For a moment, everyone eats in silence. The lights in the lounge are off, and a soft glow washes over the large room from the warm lights of the kitchen. Sybil smiles as she bites into her pizza. A sense of safety and peace and home settles into her skin as she watches her best friends eat and think. This week is going to be amazing. "Where's Mason?" Sybil asks softly, suddenly. Albany looks away from Finn, her eyes darkening with worry when she notices the absence of her twin. "Probably down in the room," Miles offers, sensing the rising tension in the room. Sybil curses herself; she shouldn't have asked. She should have just looked herself. "No," Albany says quietly, her voice barely above a whisper, "He'll be on the roof." Sybil stands faster than anyone else, "I'll go." She hurries to the door, doing her best to ignore everyone's heavy gazes on her back. She squeezes Albany's hand as she passes, trying not to seem like she's rushing. Trying to make it seem like there is no reason to rush. His blonde hair flutters in the night breeze, and the moonlight manages to cast a white aura around his body. "It's cold as fuck up here," Sybil says to the night sky, wrapping her jumper tighter around her body as she makes her way to him. He doesn't react to the sound of her voice, and instead continues to stare out at the glowing city beneath them. She reaches his side; at the ledge of the building, and stands silently for a while. It takes all of but 30 seconds for her legs to start shaking. Her fear of heights makes her heart tremble up here amongst the flowing wind and the stars, but she doesn't dare move. She stands beside Mason on the edge of her possible death for what feels like hours, each second pushing her closer to the edge. Mason doesn't speak to her or face her. He doesn't see her paling skin or her wide eyes as she stares at the floor. Oh gods, this was a bad idea, coming to stand beside him. But still, she does not move. She stands beside this man, offering her heart and soul for support. They stand in silence. "It's been five minutes," Mason says finally, a funny tone to his voice. "It has," Sybil replies gently, confused. Mason finally turns away from the view, his eyes settling on her. "You're shit scared of heights, yet you stood beside me on the ledge of a roof for five minutes." She finally lets out her sigh, finally allowing her legs to tremble drastically, "Does this mean I can step down?" she whispers, her voice shaking. He steps back onto the gravelly pavement of the roof as answer. She lets out a relieved gasp and jumps to the floor, striding to the middle of the roof- safely away from all sides. He watches her calm herself down for a few moments before slowly making his way to her side, turning to look out at the view yet again. "How did you know I'd be here?" he asks quietly, his eyes on the lights of the city. "Your twin sister knows you better than most," Sybil replies flippantly. He nods once, swallowing. Silence settles. "Were you going to jump?" He blinks at her in surprise, "Sybil, you're not supposed to ask people things like that!" She stares back, "Were you?" He frowns at the floor for a moment before shaking his head, "No, I would never." She nods once, solemn, "Good to know." The only sound is the flowing wind. "We're going ziplining tomorrow morning," she announces quietly, attempting to fill the silence. He lets out a laugh, "Peyton and Ce agree?" Sybil grins, "Barely." "Your idea?" Her grin widens, "Obviously." He snorts, "But you're afraid of heights, Sib." She turns to him, "Yep, and I just stood on the edge of a very high building with my friend for multiple minutes simply to let him know that I will be here to support him in every way possible." His face sobers, and his bronze eyes soften as he stares down at her. She meets his gaze, her own clear and defiant, daring him to reject her offer. "You mean that?" he says finally, his voice thick. She nods solemnly, "Indeed I do, Groverley." A small smile blesses his face, as it always does when she calls him by his last name, and he nods quietly before facing the city again. They stand in silence for so long the cold begins to settle into her bones, and she's about to announce that she's leaving to find a fire to throw herself into when he speaks. "Hutch really fucked her up, didn't he?" he asks, his voice barely above a whisper. Sybil glances up at him in surprise before slowly nodding, letting her sadness for her best friend wash over her. It's colder than the wind. "I didn't see it coming," she whispers to the night, "They were wildly in love." "Wildly?" "Wildly. I could have written stories about their love. Performed poems about the shine in their eyes. Pure sunshine. When they first fell in love, it was slow, sure, but it wasn't awkward. It was slow in the way that oozing lava is slow." "Annoyingly unhurried as it rushes to destroy everything in it's path and eventually solidify into a disgusting mess?" She elbows him, and he lets out a breathy laugh, "No, stupid. It was... A gentle and time consuming fall that made the landing a soft rest amongst white feathers and linen sheets." He whistles, "Shit, Sib. You really are a writer." "Fine," she snaps, defensive, "I'll just stop speaking." "No," he interrupts smoothly, calming down her temper nearly as well as Kieran does, "Keep talking. I want to hear." She frowns once at him in warning before continuing, taking a deep breath, "When they first bumped into each other in the hall, I wasn't there, but when she came back to the apartment, I knew something had clicked within her. She was... glowing. And I had never seen that look in her eyes; dreamy. For the rest of the gods damned week she shone, smiling at random times and biting her lip to stop from spitting out her story. She held it in for a while. Good on her, I say. It's hard to keep secrets from us girls, but somehow she managed. Eventually, Hutch rocked up at our door, obviously unable to stay away. I answered his knock that day, and when i caught the glazed look in his eyes, I knew it was him. He didn't even get to introduce himself before I called out for Cecily, and when their eyes met, I felt like I was interrupting some special scene in a movie where the couple realises they're in love with each other. I stepped back, and she walked right past me in a daze. I think in that moment, the moment their gazes found each other, they fell in love." "And they stayed in love?" Mason asks, breathless as he listens. Sybil had never seen Mason with a serious girlfriend; had never seen him commit himself to someone. Hearing this story is probably altering his world a bit. "Hell yeah they stayed in love. They way they looked at each other..." she lets out a sigh, "Full of gentle adoration. Always." They're quiet for a while before Sybil speaks again, "I liked Hutch," she can't keep the sadness from her tone, "He's Kieran's best friend, so I saw him a lot. He was funny, and kind, and he listened to my rants about feminism with wide eyes and enthusiastic nods," she laughs a little at the memory of a drunken Hutch listening to a drunken Sybil's complaints about the injustice of the world. Her laughter fades into silence. "I think Ce wants to hate him. I think she wants to pour her entire soul into a burning hatred for him and let it block her pain. But she can't, because I think she understands. He didn't cheat on her. He simply fell out of love. Eventually, Cecily's voice stopped being music to his ears. Eventually, a new melody stole his heart from Ce's grasp, and there was nothing either of them could do about it." He nods slowly, understanding flitting through his face, "That's why she's breaking," he says, piecing it together, "Because she can't be mad. She can only be sad." "And she's left thinking what she did wrong." "Because he fell out of love," he slowly explains to himself, his voice rough, "So she's stuck wondering why she wasn't good enough to keep him." Sybil nods once, quickly wiping away the tear trickling down her cheek. The thought of her friend doubting her worth breaks something inside of her, and she vows that she will do whatever she possibly can to fill that void within Cecily. Anything. "That shits fucked up, man," Mason whispers sadly, his eyes on the ground. "It sure is." "Love is fucked." "No," she interrupts, her tone sharp, "It's not. It's hard, but it's not fucked." He meets her gaze, "Sometimes I forget you're a hopeless romantic." She looks out to the city, "And you're not?" His gaze follows hers, "I think it's a waste." "Falling in love?" He nods, clenching his jaw, "You get vulnerable, and then you get broken." Sybil blinks away the twinkling stars and looks up to her friend, "And then someone comes along and fixes you, and you realise that you had to break in order to build yourself again, this time with that new person woven into your walls." He glances down at her, "And then?" "And then," she breathes, "You never break again. Because how can walls intertwined with pure gold crumble?" He blinks, "They can't," he whispers. She nods, "You have to wait, Mason," she whispers back, "You have to wait for your pure gold." She leaves him alone with his thoughts and the beckoning stars.

"Cecily," someone says. Sybil. Her voice somehow breaks through the sound of crashing walls in Cecily's head. It trembles with worry, Cecily can hear each syllable shake. It's not very noticeable, but it rings clearly between their bodies. Her voice only shakes when she's terrified. Wow, she must be scaring the girls. She's losing her freakin mind. Soft hands wipe away the stray hairs from her forehead. She closes her eyes, and let's her chest collapse into shaking sobs. She falls into a hard chest, and curls herself up into a ball. She can feel bodies surrounding her on the floor, hands holding her own and fingers wiping away the flowing tears. The support is nice, but it doesn't change the fact that her heart is breaking. Cecily listens to it. It doesn't shatter, or explode. It crumbles, instead. It finally falls to a million flecks of broken dust after a long time of holding itself together. "Cece," Sybil whispers into her ear, "Breathe." It is then that she realises her breaths are coming as quick gasps of air. Her chest isn't the only part of my body that's collapsing. Her lungs are squeezing in on themselves, hugging away the deep ache within. They won't get rid of it. Cecily lets out a laugh, but it comes out as a strangled choke. "I should have seen it coming," she whispers, "Oh fucking hell, we were falling apart anyway! How could i not have seen this coming!" Large but soft hands hold her waist and steady her trembling knees as they pull her to stand up. She leans against the chest, and immediately recognises Kieran's scent. Pine wood. He has always smelt like pine wood. He walks her to her room, and she lets herself collapse onto the bed. She rolls onto her back, and she stares at the ceiling. Soft light shines through the window, the brightness lost in the black and white canvases on the walls. Cecily looks from Audrey to Marilyn. They were beautiful women. They survived all the cheaters. She will too. Cecily and Peyton snuggle themselves into her sides, supporting her shaking body. Syil rests her head on Cecily's shoulder, and her wild curls tickle her cheeks. Peyton buries her face into the crook of her neck. Sybil looks over at the door and nods. The door shuts as Kieran leaves her to grieve. The girls lay in silence for a long time, until Cecily's breaths calm and her body lays still. Until the tears flow no more. "Tell us," Peyton whispers finally. Images flash into Cecily's mind. She should have known. She should have known when the front door of his apartment was locked. She was stupid. She had just assumed that he had forgotten again before getting out the spare key and unlocking it herself. She should have realised when she didn't recognise the heels on the ground next to her. She never wore stilettos. She was stupid. She had just assumed she had forgotten she bought them before stepping over them and putting her bag on the kitchen bench. She should have realised when she heard the music. Hutch hated listening to music aloud. He always blasted it on his headphones or not at all. But she was stupid. She had assumed that he had changed his mind about his music taste. The girl sitting in his lounge room had been the exact opposite to her. Where Cecily's skin had a delicate pale shine, the girl's skin shone with Brazilian sun. Where Cecily's hair was dark and short, the girl's long blonde waves hung down her back. The girl's red dress highlighted her curves, and Cecily's jeans and cardigan were pale in comparison to her beauty. Her heart had finally faltered after a month of blank beating. "Hutch?" she had whispered. She had never seen his face so pale, and had never seen him move so fast. His tall, lean body leapt over the couch, his deep brown hair shaking with the movement. "Cecily," he had breathed, reaching for her as she backed away, "It's not what it looks like. I promise!" She had stumbled back into the kitchen, her mind slowly numbing, flinching away from him. She had grabbed her bag as she swung herself out the door and into the hallway, her breaths struggling to keep up with her trembling heart. As she walked, she felt her body begin to shake. She heard the sound of the ocean, burning through her ears. She heard his footsteps following her, his strained voice desperately calling her name. He had finally reached her in the car park, just before she opened her door. He had grabbed her hand and spun her to face him. His brown eyes were bright with fear, and his chest heaved as he caught his breath. "Don't leave, Ce," he said quietly, his voice shaking, "Please come back inside." She stared up at him, up at the boy that she had loved for more than a year. Up at the boy that she would have given her soul to. Their love was a wild one. Full of passionate kisses and nights in candlelight. Trips to get ice cream at 10pm and spectacular days at the beach. It had been rainy days spent in her bed and sunny ones spent in the park with a picnic blanket underneath their entwined bodies. It was soft smiles and thumbs brushing against cheeks and whispered I love you's. Until his trip to America. Something had changed within him over there, and when he got back, he wasn't in love. She knew it the moment she had kissed him hello at the airport. She had known for almost a month now that they were falling out of love, but she chose to ignore it. Chose to look away each time he bit his lip in annoyance when her laughter echoed through the walls, chose to turn up the music to mask the sound of her solidifying heart. She shouldn't have ignored it. She should have known. "Did you sleep with her?" she had asked him, her voice trembling. He let out a small breath before shaking his head. The deep strands bounced across his forehead, and she fought the urge to tuck them behind his ears. She would never touch him again. She took a moment to process his words, nearly letting the relief buckle her knees. "Okay," she said calmly, nodding before meeting his eyes, "Then tell me something, Hutch." He watched her, his eyes burning with intensity. She nearly collapsed into sobs. She could feel her body slowly melting, washing away into waves of despair and regret. Of betrayal. "Do you love me?" she whispered. His eyes widened, and he nodded, "Of course, Cecily. I will never stop loving you." She took a deep breath. Wrong answer, Hutch. She swallowed, "But," she whispered, "You're IN love with that girl, aren't you?" " His face paled as he realised. She knew what he would say. Cecily knew that Hutch loved her, but she also knew she hadn't imagined the burning love in his eyes when he had looked at the blonde girl in the lounge room. There's a difference between loving someone, and being in love with them, and the fine line between the two was the reason her body was breaking. He looked down to the ground for a few moments, and her heart stopped beating. Sadness settled through her limbs, pumping in her faltering veins. She knew the answer, he didn't need to say the words. "I am," he whispered. "I'm sorry, Ce," Sybil whispers to her, "I never saw it coming." Cecily lets out a harsh laugh, "I did. But i ignored the signs." She closes her eyes. "Fuck, my heart hurts." Peyton suddenly sits up and stares down at the pair before her. Sybil with her tan skin and her wide, sympathetic eyes. Cecily with her frail body and her deep blue oceans full of sadness. "Let's get out," she says. "Huh?" Sybil moans, confused. "We go find Albany, and then we drive." Sybil sits up, her hair a wild mess around her face, "Like, road trip drive?" Peyton shrugs, "Like, we disappear for a few days up in the mountains, drive. We pack a bag, book a room, and we go." Sybil nods her agreement before looking down to Cecily for permission. She stares at the roof for a few moments before nodding. "I need to escape from my room for a bit. Too many memories." Sybil squeezes her hand, "When we get back, we redecorate." Cecily closes her eyes and smiles, "Okay." "Is it just the four of us going?" Sybil asks Peyton. Before she can reply, Cecily cuts in, "No." They stare at her in shock, "Wait, what?" Peyton asks. Cecily takes a few moments to herself before replying. She uses the time to fold her heart up in soft blankets, keeping it in one piece. She sits up, "I want to be surrounded by a crowd. I love you girls, but you'll force me to talk about my feelings too much. I need a group of loud people, and i need distractions," she glances at both of them, "We take everyone." Peyton raises her eyebrows, "Who classifies as everyone?" Sybil suddenly stands up from the bed with a bright smile. She shines it down upon Peyton. "Cliff classifies," she announces. Peyton stands, "Sybil," she warns, suddenly breathless, "No." "PIP," she sighs, exasperated, "You're in love with him! He's in love with you! Don't waste time. Find your rhythm again. You can find it up in the green scenery of the mountains." Cecily nods, "I want Cliff to come. He makes me laugh, and he makes your heart soar, Peyton." Peyton glances down at her, the frustration gone from her eyes. If Cecily wants Cliff there, then Cliff will be there. Anything to make her laugh. Sybil smiles, sensing the change in the atmosphere. "So," she says with a grin, bouncing in excitement, "Cecily, Peyton, Cliff, Albany, Finn, Kieran and I!" Peyton frowns, "What about Miles?" Sybil's smile falters as the image of Miles' smile swirls through her mind. Her cheeks flush with a bright glow. "I don't know," she says nervously. "Miles comes," Cecily says with a nod and a kind smile. Sybil hesitates for a moment before smiling down at Cecily, "Okay, Miles comes." The girls reach down and squeeze Cecily's hands. She feels her spirit brighten just a bit. "You'll be okay, Ce," Peyton says quietly, "We'll hold you up when you collapse." Sybil nods slowly before grinning down at her broken-hearted friend, "You'll be okay, babe. We'll get through this together. The first step is to grieve. The next 24 hours will be set with ice cream and soft blankets and gentle music. We'll be here for you when you cry. We always will be." "And after that," Peyton winks, "We take the first step back to happiness, baby girl. We've got your back," she kneels in front of the bed, staring up into Cecily's eyes, "Hutch broke your heart. That's okay. Hearts can break. But they can also heal," her eyes harden, "You will heal, Ce. We will hold your hand as you piece yourself back together. We all will." Cecily feels her heart beat. Just once. It doesn't beat again. But she doesn't need it to. That soft sound was enough. It will beat again. One day. "I'll call Albany," Sybil whispers.
