Cultural Highlights of a Qinghai Birding Tour
Located in the Tibetan plateau in northwestern China, Qinghai is a vast province rich with pristine natural beauty and cultural heritages. Travel enthusiasts planning for Qinghai birding often get awestruck by its mesmerizing avian diversity and cultural highlights.
Are you planning to visit Qinghai for a short birding tour? Add the following locations to your tour and get a fulfilling experience while traveling.
Qinghai Lake - Largest Inland Lake in China
Best travel time: May to October, especially in July and August if you want to witness full blossom rape flower.
Qinghai Lake is China's largest inland lake surrounded by grasslands, snowy mountains, and a spectacular desert. The lake stretching 105km in length and 63km in width, lets you discover the golden sea of rape flowers during summer.
If you want a challenging trip, you can prefer cycling along the lake. For a short cycling experience, you can ride from Jiayi Temple to Erlangjian Scenic Area for 2hrs to get a wonderful view. However, for a long trip, you can have a bike ride from Jiayi Temple to Shinaihai Town. It will take around 1.5 days to cover a total of 140 km.
Qinghai Tibet Railway - Made 9 Remarkable World Records
Qinghai Tibet Railway connects Xining (the capital of Qinghai) and Lhasa (the capital of Tibet). Travelers setting their journey to Tibet via this track have a breathtaking sightseeing experience. A few eye-catching destinations you can view include - Qinghai Lake, the desert mountains in Delingha, depopulated zone of Hoh Xil Nature Reserve, the snow-capped Kunlun Mountains, and so on.
It has taken around six years to complete the railway track, overcoming the challenging environmental issues and technical glitches. Surprisingly, it has set 9 remarkable world records including the highest plateau railway, longest plateau railway, highest permafrost tunnel, etc.
Chaka Salt Lake - Resemblance of The Sky
Best travel time: May to October, especially if you visit during July and August.
Chaka Salt Lake resembles the blue sky above. Initially, it was a part of the ocean. But later on, when the highest plateau was formed, the seawater left and became the Chaka Salt Lake. The spectacular view of the crystal blue lake, the scenic beauty of floating clouds, and the splendid scenery of delicately designed platforms. You can explore this place via a sightseeing car, sightseeing train, and sightseeing yacht. Even if you go for a Qinghai birding tour, tour guides will take you to this lake for avian exploration.
Other places to discover
Rongwo Monastery - Spiritual Center of Regong
Kumbum Monastery - Belong to one of the Six Greatest Tibetan Gelug Monasteries
Tibetan Medicine and Tibet Culture Museum
Amne Machin Snow Mountain - Referred to as Sacred God Mountain
The Bottom Line
Qinghai is famous for its incredible birding tour China. But you can also recommend this location for exploring the cultural heritage and beauty of the city. Usually, it takes 3-6 days to complete the classic Qinghai tour. However, you can even extend this trip to Tibet, Gansu, and Sichuan to experience the attractions surrounding the city.

FT Photo Diary 📸: Tibetan Buddhist Monks of the Gelug or Yellow Hat school unveil a giant thangka showing the Buddha on a hillside near the Rongwo Monastery during Monlam or the Great Prayer, in Tongren, also known as Rebkong, Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai, China. Monlam or the Great Prayer is the most important prayer event for many Tibetan Buddhists. Pilgrims and worshippers join prayers, teachings and rituals at the monasteries of the Gelug or Yellow Hat, school of Tibetan Buddhism to pray for long life, peace and harmony. Despite accusations of religious repression, China's atheist government claims that Tibetans are free to practise their beliefs and says several faiths are protected by the country's constitution. However, followers of Tibetan Buddhism must adhere to restrictions and controls imposed by a central government wary of the religion's politicization. Tibetan monks enjoying a water fight after the yearly painting of the temple walls, Longwu, China by Eric Lafforgue Once a year in Rongwo Buddhist monastery in the Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in China, the monks take care of the white temple walls, and whitewash them with chalk paint. This is a work dedicated to the youngest monks under the orders of the Lamas. Once the work done, the monks are able to make a battle of water in the narrow streets of the monastery. Two teams are formed, and the monks start to throw buckets of water to each others. It is late october, and at 2500m in the mountains, the temperature is close to zero degree. Quickly the monks are totally wet in their red clothes. This event is a way to reduce the daily pressure, as the young men have to live a very tough life for years in the monastery, starting before dawn with hours of prays and religious singings. Less and less families are ready to « offer » a son to monasteries as modern temptations become stronger than faith, and the amount of young novices is going down years after years. For once, the police that is everywhere and monitors everything thanks to CCTV cameras lets the peacefull fight goes on in an area that saw lot of riots happen few years ago when several hundred Tibetans protested against Chinese rule in the province after a monk there set himself alight… © Eric Lafforgue http://ift.tt/Hjf85o http://ift.tt/2mdiSju
