                                         ON THE BORDER
Metida hasta las cejas en un lío tremendo junto a Takeshi,un periodista japonés con pasaporte británico,acompañé a una partida de tibetanos en su huida a la frontera sur con Nepal por los caminos del Himalaya.
Escapaban de la represión china,casi todos sus familiares estaban detenidos o muertos.La ruta que hicimos no la desvelaré pues aún se utiliza,se bifurca en un punto de la más conocida ruta del Kailás que lleva los refugiados tibetanos al norte de India.
En esos páramos del sur del Himalaya no sabíamos a ciencia cierta dónde acababa China y dónde Nepal.Es decir,dónde nos podían detener y/o matar aún ,y dónde no.
Creiamos estar ya en Nepal,y en un recodo de un sendero entrando a una aldea en ruinas,rodeada de colinas resecas y deforestadas,oímos unos gritos en chino y ruido de camiones.Nos arrojamos inmediatamente entre las paredes de un establo sin techo.
Y esta es la foto,la única que hice en ese día,del silencioso pánico contenido del grupo de ancianas,mujeres y niños que estaban a unos pasos de una vida libre,obstaculizada por cinco camiones militares chinos que rastreaban grupos de huídos los días de buen tiempo.
Nadie me miraba,a nadie le importaba mi cámara menos al anciano sin dientes ( desde la última vez que le arrestaron por intentar entrar ilegalmente en Nepal) de la izquierda.
Cuando guarde la cámara con cuidado entre mi mochila y me senté a esperar lo inevitable,me dijo en un susurro una de las frases que más espanto me han producido jamás:” Creo que a tí te va a doler más cuando te rompan la cámara que cuando a mí me rompieron los dientes.” 
Con su mirada a cámara dos minutos antes, en esta fotografía ,me estaba diciendo lo mismo.
Observadla.
( aún me recorre un escalofrío cuando la veo,una docena de ellos)
