New Music | Nick MIllevoi
Guitarist and composer Nick Millevoi teams up with Ropeadope for the release of his new full-length album, Digital Reaction. Arresting experimental sound is to be expected, as Millevoi’s extensive body of work includes collaborations with the likes of Chris Forsyth, John Zorn, Nels Cline, and Fugazi’s Joe Lally. Millevoi’s work has explored the full range of guitar history, from early rock & roll and surf music through noise and the avant-garde. On his newest, he forges explosive new ground into heavy beats and high-voltage sonics, inspired by Herbie Hancock’s ground-breaking work in the 1980s; Downtown New York figures such as Robert Quine, Bill Laswell, and the Golden Palominos; German visionaries Kraftwerk; and more.
Digital Reaction pushes ahead with absolutely no trepidation as Millevoi brings in a fascinating cast of players, each figuring into different cuts on the record. Perhaps most prominent is bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma—whose own recordings were a major influence upon the album—and his seasoned groove and signature instrumental voice are evident. Rapper and producer Lushlife brings cosmic verse to the heavy industrial rap track, ‘Spins of the Axis.’ Other bandmembers & guests include Jason Nazary (Anteloper), Ron Stabinsky (Meat Puppets), Johnny DeBlase (Desertion Trio), Elizabeth Pupo-Walker (Sharon Jones), and Bryan Murray (Bryan and the Haggards), as the album moves through a range of styles with a steady, driving beat. Throughout is the deep intent and energy that marks Nick Millevoi’s style — driving forward at warp speed with no rear-view mirror, the music is powerful and provocative.

Mostly Other People Do the Killing „Disasters vol.1”
Mostly Other People Do the Killing „Disasters vol.1”
Hot Cup Records, 2022 Same “Katastrofy” !!! Taka właśnie jest najnowsza płyta grupy Mostly Other People Do the Killing. „Disasters vol.1”…

Mostly Other People Do The Killing ha regresado tras publicar sus dos últimas grabaciones en 2017.

Mostly Other People Do the Killing – Loafer’s Hollow (Hot Cup)
Don’t let the starched suits or staid standing formation fool you, MOPDtK, as they’re known in the shorthand, have a history of attacking convention and decorum with the antithesis of kid gloves. As such, banjoist Brandon Seabrook’s crazed gaze is a much better analogue to the band’s aesthetic. Loafer’s Hollow draws on several of their usual habiliments while earnestly switching up others. As with past projects, the album cover is a carefully-choreographed parody, this time mimicking one of their own earlier efforts, Red Hot, itself a riff on Jelly Roll Morton’s Birth of the Hot. That extra layer of meta is right in line with the band’s methodology of pilfering facets of earlier musical styles and putting them playfully through the idiomatic shredder to produce something new, but still recognizable as descendant of what came prior.
A book perched purposefully on trombonist Dave Taylor’s knee points to one of the measurable differences of the date as five of the eight pieces carry explicit dedications to literary figures. All also somewhat miraculously borrow their names from municipalities in bassist Moppa Elliott’s native Pennsylvania and surrounding area, another practice present on past projects. Elliott handles composer duties alone and opts for concision over excess in keeping all but one piece to an economical five minutes or less. Even so, each piece is packed to brimming with activity featuring zigs, zags and all manner of nimble maneuvers in-between both in ensemble and solo iterations. Elliott and Shea sustain a loose rhythmic constancy alongside pianist Ron Stabinsky, but are careful not to rein their colleagues in even when the collective enterprise threatens to implode under perilous levels of hyperactivity.
“Hi-Nella” comes off like a Dixieland ditty dipped in lysergic acid and minced into bite-sized morsels. Seabrook stands out here and elsewhere, his manic, electronics-augmented strums approximating a Frankenstein melding of Dave Fiuczynski and George Guesnon. Bernstein’s loquacious slide trumpet muscles in as the other featured voice. “Honey Hole” flips the spotlight to John Irabagon’s well-juiced tenor and a string of garrulous gutbucket gesticulations from Taylor, the newest MOPDtK recruit, but a veteran improviser in his own right. Irabagon also annexes ample mic time on “Kilgore”, scripted in honor of Kurt Vonnegut’s enigmatic fictional creation answering to the surname Trout, a frenzied sopranino taking flight after a preface of shambling and eructative breath sounds from others in the band and in advance of a manic piano exit.
Thomas Pynchon gets a winking nod on the oddly elegiac “Mason and Dixon” where Stabinsky’s somber chords paint in dreary aural grayscale before the rest of the band obliterates the mood with a jaunty medley built on a snippet of Cannonball Adderley’s “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”. “Meridian” feels similarly incongruous in terms of tone to title with a bright swaggering theme and underlying swing given its referencing of Cormac McCarthy’s nihilistic novel of the Old West. The shifting frames of reference on “Glen Riddle” move from breezy Burt Bacharach-ready ballad territory to vertiginous collective fractiousness and back again. With cogent and creative irreverence an increasingly rare commodity these days, MOPDtK’s concerted efforts in the vein are made all the more valuable. This date brings to bear the band’s hiding-in-plain-sight secret once again: when it comes to operating their respective axes in the studio or for a concert audience it’s they who do the killing nearly each and every time.

Desertion Trio - Twilight Time
Guitarist Nick Millevoi’s Desertion Trio is back with a crackling collection of covers. The songs here are drawn from an eclectic array of sources -- Santo & Johnny, Sun Ra and Les Baxter among them. Each one is attacked and reimagined with relish, Millevoi’s quicksilver guitar darting over bassist Johnny DeBlase and drummer Kevin Shea’s clattering, controlled chaos. There are also tasty guest spots from singer Tara Middleton and keyboardist Ron Stabinsky -- but it’s the core trio that provides the most thrilling fireworks. Twilight Time can sit comfortably beside similarly styled recent records by Nels Cline and Julian Lage -- guitar-centric music that isn’t quite jazz, isn’t quite rock but is all awesome. And hey, Nick passed along a few recent Desertion Trio live jams(featuring Cline and radical trumpet player Jaimie Branch!) to check out too ...

Peter Evans Quintet from EMPAC @ Rensselaer on Vimeo.
March 29, 2013
Taking jazz ensembles into the 21st century, the Peter Evans Quintet incorporates real-time sound processing with traditional instruments. These live electronics allow the group to change their sound fluidly from mellow tones to jagged rattling to cacophonous reverberation. The quintet draws on traditional jazz idioms as source material and contorts them into something resembling classical European avant-garde—complete with complex rhythms played with pinpoint accuracy and confounding extended techniques.

Talibam! to release ultra-limited box set containing 15 NEW albums in celebration of their 15th anniversary; announce German festival residency and tour dates
There’s “doing it,” and then there’s “overdoing it.” Guess which way NYC’s premier “Dadaist provocateurs” are leaning? Never ones to mail it in, Talibam! have carved out a 15-year career revealing the often-engrossing uniqueness of a band that has remained confidently outside any easily recognizable genre but has embraced so many. Matt Mottel and Kevin Shea have never shied from showing us their fun and exploratory side; so to celebrate their musical lives together thus far, they’ve announced a new box set containing basically a bazillion new albums and a bunch of German festival shows that are as quirky as they are. An ambitious and artistic box set creation, 15th Anniversary Box Set, 2003-2018, Presenting 15 New Albums for 2018 is exactly that: 15 NEW albums on 8 CDs to celebrate Shea and Mottel’s 15 years as Talibam! This is not a band that caters to any act of convention; so, naturally, each album is a different affair featuring a slew of styles and collaborators, such as Audrey Chen and Phil Minton, Alan Wilkinson, and Colin L. (in fine Billy Joel Cover Band form). All eight discs also include covers adorned with photography by Mottel’s father, the late, esteemed lensman, theater director/producer, and media consultant Syeus Mottel. The CD box is being released in a limited-edition of 100 only, so go here now and send it to someone you love (yourself). Meanwhile, Mottel and Shea are currently playing around in Europe until the beginning of June, after which they will return stateside for a couple of gigs in Miami and Brooklyn. All dates listed from May 18-May 21 are part of Talibam!’s “Artist in Resistance” residency at the Moers Festival in Germany and feature a variety of Talibam! shows and events, sessions, and discussions featuring Mottel, Shea, and frequent collaborators Matt Nelson, Ron Stabinsky, and Luke Stewart. Pour yourself a drink and raise a glass to commemorate one of the most overdoingist bands of the last 15 years. You’ll need a pretty big glass, though; there is a LOT of info below. Billy Joel Cover Band (2017) by Colin L. & TALIBAM! 15th Anniversary Box Set, 2003-2018, Presenting 15 New Albums for 2018: I. Talibam! + Audrey Chen & Phil Minton - Purple Piano II.
