Upcoming series: Ena
In September, the filming of Ena began, a biographical series that will focus on the life of Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, queen of Spain through her marriage to Alfonso XIII between May 31, 1906 and April 14, 1931, after being the monarchy deposed later by the proclamation of the Second Republic. Great-grandmother of the current king Philip VI of Spain, of whom she was godmother at his baptism. Throughout six chapters, the series will tell the life of Victoria Eugenie and at the same time offer a portrait of a time that changed the world, the first half of the 20th century, from 1905 to 1945. Born on October 24, 1887 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Ena was the daughter of Henry of Battenberg and Princess Beatrice, youngest daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her godmother was Eugenia de Montijo, empress consort of France as Napoleón III's wife. The name of the series comes from what her friends and family called her since she was little, Ena.
The fiction is based on the novel of the same name by Pilar Eyre. Javier Olivares, who was behind the acclaimed Isabel and El Ministerio del Tiempo, will be the showrunner and plot manager for Ena. In addition to Olivares, the script is written by Isa Sánchez, Daniel Corpas and Pablo Lara Toledo. The series will be directed entirely by women: Anaïs Pareto, director of the series as a whole, in addition to four episodes, and Estel Díaz, who will direct two episodes.
“Ena is the portrait of historical moments that seem distant but are not so far away, because without them we would not understand the times we live in now,” Olivares declares in the press release sent by TVE. The writer and screenwriter remembers that Victoria Eugenie “fought to be happy in a bitter time, in which she witnessed two world wars, a civil war and a great pandemic, the tortuously called Spanish flu.”
For Pilar Eyre, author of the novel, she was "an extraordinary woman: cultured, supportive, liberal-minded, modern and very loyal." And she is excited because "finally all Spaniards can know" the story of a "misunderstood" woman. in their time, which they will always consider foreign." It is a fiction co-produced by RTVE with Ena La Serie AIE, La Cometa TV and Zona App. José Pastor, director of Film and Fiction at RTVE, has pointed out that "it is a "RTVE is proud to be able to portray this interesting historical character, from the point of view of two women directors and with Javier Olivares as showrunner, in one of its best series."
The Spanish actress of Anglo-Danish descent Kimberly Tell will play Ena and Joan Amargós will play Alfonso XIII. For her part, Elvira Mínguez will play Maria Christina von Habsburg-Lothringen, mother of Alfonso XIII. The cast is completed by Lucía Guerrero (Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha), Raúl Mérida (Alfonso of Orleans and Bourbon), Juan Gea (Álvaro Figueroa y Torres, Count of Romanones), María Morales (María del Carmen Angoloti y Mesa, Duchess of Victoria), Pedro Mari Sánchez (Rodrigo de Saavedra y Vinent, Marquis of Villalobar), Luisa Gavasa (Eugenia de Montijo) and Joaquín Notario (José de Saavedra y Salamanca, Marquis of Viana)
Mariano Peña will play Miguel Primo de Rivera; Jaume Madaula will play the anarchist Mateo Morral, author of the attack committed at the royal wedding; Tomás del Estal will be Emilio María de Torres y González-Arnáu, and Ángel Ruiz will once again give life to Federico García Lorca, a character he already played in El Ministerio del Tiempo, among others.
The series will be filmed entirely in natural exteriors and interiors, like the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso (Segovia), the Palace of Santoña (Madrid), the Palace of Fernán Núñez (Madrid), the Fort of San Francisco (Guadalajara) and the Magdalena Palace (Santander), built in 1911 by the City Council as a tribute to the monarchs and where Ena spent a good part of her summers in Spain, accompanied by the Royal Family. Filming for the series will continue until the end of December.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, the Magdalena Palace is going to be an important location during the series as a summer palace, the main filming location in Gran Hotel, and in that series Ena appeared in the episode 3×13, played by Aída Filx.
Apart from that, are we getting an Olivaresverse (XD)? Most likely not, and it's just references about his previous works as a showrunner, but there are connections between Isabel, Emdt and Ena: Michelle Jenner starring Isabel as Isabella I of Castile, then appearing in a couple of scenes in Emdt episode 1×04 and being an important figure in the lore as the foundress of the ministry (& Eusebio Poncela playing as Cisneros in both series, and also he played Cisneros in the film La Corona Partida and the Carlos Rey Emperador series); Alfonso XIII is a descendant of Isabella I of Castile; Ángel Ruiz appeard as Lorca in Emdt in 4 episodes and now he is on Ena playing as Lorca again, we don't know yet how much screentime he will get or which will his role be (secondary character most likely), but it's great to see more about him!
Adore this page so much and I'm wondering if there is much to be known about the Duchess of Windsor and her struggles with anxiety?
Hi! Thanks so much for reaching out! I could go on a lot about this subject.
There's a lot out there about Wallis's mental health issues, though it's not something that she talked about much openly or using the terminology we would use today. I remember once reading in an article that she was actually formally diagnosed and medicated for something related to anxiety in the 1940s or '50s, but looking back I'm not sure the evidence was really there as Wallis wasn't exactly going around telling people what medicines she was taking.
But there's still a lot of documentation about Wallis's mental health in general including that she definitely experienced severe anxiety, sometimes justified by her circumstances but just as often not. Wallis's letters both to David and Aunt Bessie give a good indication of her mental state. She would often fixate on worst-case scenarios, such as David dying in various ways. One example is how in 1955, when David was in France and Wallis in New York, Wallis suddenly became convinced that his bedroom at their country house was a "perfect fire trap" because of the stairs leading up to it and she had had "night nerves" about this and so asked he sleep in her room instead. (Source: The Secret File of the Duke of Windsor) This sort of thing comes up a lot. She would also get extremely uncomfortable at any public event where she felt put on display, worrying that people were judging her and that if she put a foot wrong she would be humiliated.
According to people who saw her regularly, Wallis displayed certain physical behaviors when she was anxious such as teasing her back hair with her fingers, pressing her cheeks between her hands, and playing with her jewelry. (Source: The Windsor Story) Wallis also had a lot of stomach issues that are often comorbid with anxiety that she wrote about at length in her letters to Aunt Bessie in the early 1930s. (Source: Wallis and Edward Letters 1931-1937)
Wallis's worst problem was insomnia; she struggled to sleep through the night. It was common for her to go to bed around four or five AM, get little or no sleep, and be up at seven or eight. When she was anxious about something she would report being unable to sleep at all. This shows up in a lot of sources, especially from almost anyone who spent the night at her house or had her spend the night at theirs. When she was with David he would sometimes stay up with her and houseguests would hear them talking and sometimes laughing all through the night. (Source: Aline, Countess of Romanones in an article "The Dear Romance" for Vanity Fair and C.Z. Guest interviewed in the documentary Edward on Edward) Insomnia was also probably a big reason she liked to go to clubs and parties late at night so she could keep occupied instead of just lying in bed with her own thoughts. I think this stemmed from a place of both anxiety and trauma. Her first husband Win Spencer would regularly come home drunk and assault her in the middle of the night, which was probably the original source of her insomnia. Then during the abdication crisis Wallis was constantly receiving very graphic death threats in the mail; since these were coming in the mail, obviously these people knew where she was and she genuinely believed she was likely to be murdered. Even when she had armed guards (something she would insist on for her rest of her life) she still didn't sleep because she was worried the guard would himself fall asleep and leave her unprotected. (Source: Behind Closed Doors)
Wallis also had at least two mental breakdowns that are documented. One was on November 28, 1936 (an extremely stressful time for her that unfortunately got much worse before it got better): she was attended to by a doctor who ordered her to have a week's bedrest and not see or talk to anyone (excluding David and Aunt Bessie) for fear of straining her heart. (Source: Chips Channon's diary and Wallis and Edward Letters 1931-1937) The other was after Christmas of 1942, which was documented in vague terms by David in a letter to Aunt Bessie; he attributed her 'collapse' to exhaustion and stress because she was setting up an Air Force canteen and had personally taken on too many responsibilities related to Christmas celebrations for the airmen while not taking any time for herself or getting the proper amount of sleep. (Source: The Duke of Windsor's War)
She also had some well-documented phobias, most notably her fear of flying which meant she almost exclusively traveled by train or boat and caused many inconveniences over the years. This stemmed from having witnessed plane crashes in Pensacola during her time there with Win Spencer. She also had a fear of thunderstorms, which would cause her to stay in her room whenever there was one. According to her secretary in the Bahamas, Jean Hardcastle-Taylor, on at least one occasion she was so frightened David cancelled an important appointment to stay with her. (Source: The Windsors I Knew)
When she was depressed or stressed out that would often feed into her paranoia and make her more anxious. One story that, assuming it's reliable, speaks to Wallis's depression and paranoia is this one recorded by Diana Cooper in 1948 in a letter to her son:
The Duchess of Windsor went to see Susan Mary [Patten, a friend of the Coopers] and told her she had lost her joie de vivre, that buying clothes and jewels no longer interested her, all was stale and unprofitable, that all she had ever had was energy and without energy she’d lose the Duke, and then she fell a-crying and a-boo-hooing. Poor Wallis. (x)
I've tried to cover a lot to paint a picture of the impression I've gotten after years of reading every book I could find about Wallis, but of course there's way more out there. I do think understanding Wallis's mental health and the fact that she was a very anxious person is key to understanding her as a person, the decisions she made, and why she reacted to certain situations the way she did.
-Rom’s glasses are uneven! Well, specifically the frames. He is usually adjusting his glasses a lot
-They are pansexual!! You are viable to be asked out at any moment! (this is a half-joke i’d only do it if you’re comfortable with it)
-The rose on their chest is sort of attached to them?? To put it short I wouldn’t recommend trying to cut the thing off. Plucking petals is alright though!!
-Despite being called the ‘romance anon,’ he has very little experience in dating. He just thinks people are pretty ok leave him be
FOUR SEASONS: CONTRAPORTADA DE LA CORONA Rafael Dávila Álvarez
Durante unas horas ha dejado de ser un hotel de lujo en el centro de Madrid para ser la cubierta trasera, la parte de atrás, de la Corona de España. Desde su terraza, que es la contraportada del hotel, porque no se mira hacia dentro, se atisba el Palacio Real: “Entró el Ayudante de servicio y entregó a Romanones un escrito de Alcalá Zamora, al parecer conminatorio, pues era ya tarde y se…
