7 minutes and 57.148 seconds – Volkswagen set a new best time in the most impressive manner at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (USA), making a bold statement for electromobility. At the wheel of the fully-electric I.D. R Pikes Peak, Romain Dumas conquered the competition and improved on the 2013 record set by Sébastien Loeb (F) by 16.730 seconds.

It is the start of a new era in motorsport for Volkswagen – and one thing is already certain: This Volkswagen is set to electrify its public. When the I.D. R Pikes Peak is presented to the public on April 22, it will be Volkswagen’s first fully-electric racing car. Lightweight construction and aerodynamic perfection contribute to an exciting design, which houses an electric power unit. The I.D. R Pikes Peak will first take its place under the spotlight of the international media at the racetrack in Alés, France – home of world-class driver Romain Dumas (F), who will be at the wheel for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb – before the official test program gets underway just one day later.

Key date, 24 June 2018 – one goal: break the record for electric racing cars.

The event on Pikes Peak, reverently known as the “Race to the Clouds”, starts at 2,862 meters and finishes at 4,302 meters above sea level. For more than 100 years, it has been the most spectacular hill climb in the world of motor racing. Volkswagen took part with an iconic and spectacular twin-engine Golf in 1987 but came up just short of victory. The goal is now to settle that score by setting a new record for electric cars.

Logistische Meisterleistung von Volkswagen Motorsport vor dem spektakulären Event

Wolfsburg (09. Juli 2018). Die Erinnerungen an den Triumph beim Pikes Peak International Hill Climb sind noch allgegenwärtig: Am 24. Juni hat Volkswagen Motorsport-Geschichte geschrieben, als Romain Dumas (F) im I.D. R Pikes Peak in 7:57,148 Minuten zu einer neuen Bestzeit beim berühmtesten Bergrennen der Welt gefahren ist. Vom 12. bis 15. Juli geht die Rekordjagd weiter: beim Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018. Das legendäre Motorsport-Event ist die weltweit größte Veranstaltung ihrer Art und feiert in diesem Jahr bereits ihren 25. Geburtstag. Mehr als 200.000 Besucher aus aller Welt werden zu dieser einzigartigen Hommage an den Motorsport im Süden Englands erwartet.

In Goodwood feiert der I.D. R Pikes Peak seine Wettkampfpremiere in Europa. Der erste rein elektrisch angetriebene Rennwagen von Volkswagen ist der sportliche Vorbote der I.D. Familie. „Ich freue mich wahnsinnig, beim Goodwood Festival of Speed wieder am Steuer des I.D. R Pikes Peak zu sitzen“, sagt Dumas. „Das Rennen auf dem Anwesen des Duke of Richmond ist ein ganz besonderer Event mit jeder Menge Tradition. In dieser tollen Atmosphäre gehen die besten Fahrer der Welt mit teils legendären Rennwagen an den Start. Der I.D. R Pikes Peak ist zwar noch sehr jung, aber mit der Rekordfahrt am Pikes Peak ebenfalls schon eine ‚lebende Legende‘.“

Hügel statt Berg: Jagd auf E-Rekord in Goodwood

In Goodwood peilt Volkswagen mit dem I.D. R Pikes Peak den nächsten Rekord an: die Bestzeit für Elektrofahrzeuge. 2013 setzte Jonny Cocker (GB) im Lola-Drayson B12 69/EV in 47,34 Sekunden eine neue Bestmarke am legendären Goodwood Hillclimb. Den bis heute gültigen Allzeit-Rekord hält der ehemalige Formel-1-Pilot Nick Heidfeld (D). 1999 bewältigte er die lediglich 1,86 Kilometer lange Strecke mit einem McLaren-Mercedes MP4/13 aus der Formel 1 in 41,6 Sekunden.

Damit der Plan aufgeht, muss Volkswagen Motorsport derzeit eine logistische Meisterleistung vollbringen: Der I.D. R Pikes Peak wurde nach der Rekordfahrt beim Pikes Peak International Hill Climb schnellstmöglich für den Transport nach Europa vorbereitet und ist erst vor wenigen Tagen per Luftfracht ins Heimatquartier nach Hannover gekommen. Dort wird der Elektro-Rennwagen derzeit vorbereitet, ehe es zur neuen Herausforderung nach Südengland geht. Ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit für das Team von Volkswagen Motorsport.

Auch der Twin-Golf Pikes Peak 1987 in Goodwood am Start

Den Besuchern des diesjährigen Goodwood Festival of Speed wird seitens Volkswagen Motorsport einiges geboten: Neben dem I.D. R Pikes Peak wird auch der Twin-Golf Pikes Peak von 1987 an den Rennen auf den Goodwood-Hügel teilnehmen. Hans-Joachim „Strietzel“ Stuck und Jochi Kleint sitzen abwechselnd am Steuer des rund 480 kW (652 PS) starken Bi-Motor-Rennwagens. Wie beim I.D. R Pikes Peak fiel die Wahl der Ingenieure seinerzeit auch beim aufsehenerregenden Golf auf eine Lösung mit zwei Antriebsquellen. Beim I.D. R Pikes Peak arbeiten zwei Elektromotoren mit einer Systemleistung von 500 kW (680 PS). Beide Fahrzeuge werden neben den Renneinsätzen auch im Fahrerlager ausgestellt und die Fahrer stehen für Gespräche und Autogramme zur Verfügung.

Successful maiden outing: The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak completed its first laps at the racetrack in Alès. The fully-electric super sports car, developed for the iconic “Race to the Clouds” in Colorado Springs (USA), will attempt to break the record for electric cars at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on 24 June. Between now and then, the spectacular prototype, which generates 500 kW (680 hp) and features a twin-engine powertrain, will undergo a strict programme of testing – initially in Europe, then in the USA. The man in the cockpit for the car’s first outing was Romain Dumas (F), who will also be at the wheel of the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak for the record attempt at the end of June. “It was absolutely fantastic to see the completed I.D. R for the first time, and to take it out for its first spin,” said Romain Dumas, who is a three-time winner of the hill climb on Pikes Peak. “What Volkswagen has managed to put together from scratch over the past few months has my greatest respect. I had obviously seen initial pictures of the car – but it is even more spectacular in the flesh. We now have a packed schedule of testing ahead of us, and I am looking forward to every metre!”

Stálou expozici v Rodném domě Ferdinanda Porsche v Liberci-Vratislavicích doplňuje nová fotovýstava z díla Martina Straky. Mapuje nejpůsobivější momenty vytrvalostního závodu 24 hodin Le Mans z pohledu značky Porsche.

Nová výstava je umístěna stylově v servisní budově areálu, kde jsou standardně garáže. Až do 30. srpna mohou návštěvníci obdivovat vzrušující prostředí proslulého vytrvalostního závodu automobilů, na jehož trati zaznamenala četné úspěchy právě značka Porsche, nesoucí jméno vratislavického rodáka.

24 působivých fotografií zachycuje neopakovatelnou atmosféru vytrvalostního závodu z let 2014-2017.

Výstava 24 fotografií respektovaného televizního komentátora „čtyřiadvacetihodinovky“ a výborného fotografa Martina Straky nazvaná „Porsche – 24 hodin Le Mans“ přináší to nejlepší z ročníků 2014–2017 závodu vpravdě královské kategorie. Na snímcích se objevuje i vítězný vůz z roku 2016 Porsche 919 Hybrid posádky Neel Jani / Marc Lieb / Romain Dumas, který návštěvníci najdou vystavený v hlavní expozici Rodného domu jen pár kroků od nové výstavy.

Rodný dům Ferdinanda Porsche v Liberci-Vratislavicích je pro veřejnost přístupný vždy od pátku do neděle od 9:00 do 17:00, v rámci zvýhodněného kombinovaného vstupného je možné spojit návštěvu s prohlídkou ŠKODA Muzea v Mladé Boleslavi. Zde mimo jiné probíhá výstava „S tradicí do budoucnosti“, která mapuje 125 let existence automobilky ŠKODA.
