Rolón Donaire had never exactly been known for his gentleness. As the king of Purgatory and the monster of Manila, he’d created quite the reputation for himself as a heartless, intimidating, and cold man. He felt no sympathy for the many worms he’d slaughtered, nor any remorse for the man after man he humiliatingly beat into a bloody pulp within the rings of Purgatory. Yet here that same man was, his head gently resting in my lap with a small, blissed-out smile on his face. He looks content like this, his usual stony expression gone and  his blonde hair slightly disheveled and unkempt.

“There’s a tournament coming up,” he murmurs under his breath, moreso to himself than to anyone else. “Against some other organization. It’s been in the works for a while.”

“Oh?” I ask, my intrigue piqued. He rarely talks about Purgatory affairs, much preferring to keep his personal and work life as far away from each other as possible. I’ve only met a few of his fellow gladiators, ‘the tamer ones’ as he called them. “Will you be competing?” He chuckles at this.

“Of course I am. If something goes wrong, I’ll be there to ensure victory.”

“Should I come? It sounds interesting at the very least and it’d be nice to give my support,” I ask and he visibly tenses at this. 

“Maybe another time. There have been some… things going on behind the scenes. There’s a chance it might get out of hand.”

“You’ll be safe, right?”

“Of course I will. Whatever happens, I can take care of it. I haven’t lost in a very long time and I certainly don’t intend to reprise that now.” There’s a hardened determination in his eyes, one I haven’t seen in a long time. “I’ll win this silly game they’re playing and I’ll win this damn tournament while I’m at it. I swear it.”

Kengan Omega Chapter 136 Review (No Spoilers)

This chapter was just full on action as Ohma and Rolon look to get the upperhand. No other substories feature in this chapter. Just the two captains of their teams looking to secure the win that seals the fate of both organizations. As such there is not a whole lot to talk about here in terms of story besides Rolon is insanely strong and Ohma is a beast.

(Think I was kidding about him being a beast?)

The art was fantastic as always and the action that it portrays is excellent. The beauty of this series is that while it slips into the fantastical realm of special moves that can border on impossible it just as often keeps itself grounded.

(Rolon is easily one of the cooler characters in purgatory.)

In one instance you will see someone fix an arm that is clearly broken by...magical technique. In the other instance you will see some amazing references to judo techniques. Back to the chapter though. Both fighters seem to be well matched as it feels like a more equal exchange than a few of the past chapters. The problem however is that someone has to lose.

Bottom Line:

This is another great chapter with no real need for a pros or cons. If you like action and fantastical techniques yet grounded combat, this chapter is for you.

The Rolon Donaire fight ended kind of generically. I get that he’s supposed to be a full rounded fighter who employs simple fighting styles and but also has unique twists to keep his opponents on his toes, but that’s not really expressed well in the fight. Call me a baby with no reading comprehension (panel reading comprehension?) but I wish the manga was less subtle about his supposed genius.

So far Jurota vs Masaki Hayami was the only fight where I really understood that Purgatory was really all that formidable (Monkhbat, Lu Tian, and Fei Wangfang don’t count since they’re “worms”)
