Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Convertible
It is extraordinary to have one of these very rare Silver Cloud adaptations by H. J. Mulliner. Only 25 vehicles were produced in total. This beautiful vehicle comes in the unusual color Velvet Green and with black leather interior. The car had owners in Germany, California, Switzerland and Monaco. Nicolas Cage is also said to have been one of the owners.

THE NOT-SO-POPULAR MECHANICS
S5;E22 ~ February 19, 1973
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Directed by Coby Ruskin ~ Written by Bob Carroll Jr. and Madelyn Davis
Synopsis
Harry buys a vintage car at the same time that Lucy and Mary Jane are taking an adult school class in automotive repair. When Harry goes away on a trip, he asks Lucy to phone his mechanic, but she forgets. Lucy thinks she can do the work herself – but things don't go as planned when Harry comes home early from his trip.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carter), Gale Gordon (Harrison Otis Carter)
Lucie Arnaz (Kim Carter) does not appear in this episode, nor does she receive screen credit. Except for the clips seen in the season finale, the character will not return to the series until the fourth episode of season six.
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Mary Jane Croft (Mary Jane) played Betty Ramsey during season six of “I Love Lucy. ” She also played Cynthia Harcourt in “Lucy is Envious” (ILL S3;E23) and Evelyn Bigsby in “Return Home from Europe” (ILL S5;E26). She played Audrey Simmons on “The Lucy Show” but when Lucy Carmichael moved to California, she played Mary Jane Lewis, the actor’s married name and the same one she uses on all 31 of her episodes of “Here’s Lucy. Her final acting credit was playing Midge Bowser on “Lucy Calls the President” (1977). She died in 1999 at the age of 83.
Tumblr media
Robert Rockwell (Jack Scott) is probably best remembered as biology teacher Mr. Boynton on “Our Miss Brooks” (1952-56) opposite Gale Gordon (Osgood Conklin) and Mary Jane Croft (Miss Enright), who were also series regulars. Although not the first to play Mr. Boynton, he assumed the role on radio and made the transition with the show to television. He previously played Viv's handsome match in “Lucy Digs Up a Date” (TLS S1;E2) the second installment of “The Lucy Show” in 1962. He continued working until 1995 and died in 2003 at age 82.
In addition to being an auto mechanic and a teacher at the Valley Trade School, Jack Scott is also a sailor who docks his boat at the Paradise Yacht Club. The character’s name may have been inspired by Jack Scott Fones, an advertising executive working with Philip-Morris who befriended Lucille Ball during “I Love Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Leigh Adams-Bennett (Mrs. Foley, student) makes her first of only two TV appearances after doing background work on two films in 1972.
The character’s surname is likely a tribute to the show’s film editor, John Foley A.C.E.
Tumblr media
Shirley Anthony (Student, uncredited, extreme right) made more than a dozen background appearances on “Here’s Lucy.”  From 1994 to 1999 she played Sally on “The Rockford Files” TV movies.
The other female students in Mr. Scott's class are played by uncredited and unidentified background performers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The title refers to Popular Mechanics, a magazine devoted to science and technology first published in 1902 by H.H. Windsor. Since 1958 it has been owned by the Hearst Corporation.
Tumblr media
Chevrolet provided all the training materials as well as the motor parts for the car. They received screen credit. Series Executive Producer (and husband to Lucille Ball) Gary Morton was an auto enthusiast so he acted as consultant for this episode. He was, however, billed under his birth name, Morton Goldaper.
At the start of the episode, Mary Jane has come over to take Lucy to Morton's Department Store End-of-the-Month sale. This is the second time that Lucy's married name has been used as the name of a Los Angeles department store.
Tumblr media
When Harry drools over his new Rolls Royce, Lucy quips “I haven't seen that expression on his face since he judged the Miss Borego Springs beauty contest.”  Borego Springs was where Gale Gordon lived and was briefly mayor. It is located outside San Diego, California, and was previously mentioned in “Someone's on the Ski Lift with Dinah” (S4;E7).
Tumblr media
The license plate on Lucy's new car is 592-IMW.  The last time we saw inside Lucy’s garage was in “Lucy and Aladdin’s Lamp” (S3;E21) two years earlier when she had a garage sale.
Tumblr media
Harry's mechanic is named Mr. Nickel. Harry has entered his vintage Rolls in the Classic Car Show and needs some minor repairs performed while he is away in San Francisco.
Tumblr media
Harry mentions (but does not sing) the song “Embraceable You,” a song by George and Ira Gershwin originally written in 1928 for the un-produced operetta East is West. It was eventually included in the 1930 musical Girl Crazy. It is now part of the musical Crazy for You.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The reveal of Harry's vintage Rolls Royce is visually similar to the reveal of the 1923 Cadillac when the Ricardos and Mertzes are “Getting Ready” (ILL S4;E10) to drive to Hollywood.
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo’s knowledge of auto repair was also pretty poor!  She didn’t even know how to change a tire in “Off To Florida” (ILL S6;E6).
Tumblr media
Like the auto parts of the Rolls Royce, Mrs. Ricardo also had no idea what to do with the many parts she took out of her television set in “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (ILL S1;E30).
Tumblr media
Lucy Carmichael and Viv Bagley went to adult night school in “Lucy and Viv Take Up Chemistry” (TLS S1;E26).
FAST FORWARD!
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball owned several Rolls Royces over the years, including a 1965 Silver Cloud III convertible. Lucille Ball and Gary Morton owned a 1984 Silver Spur Rolls Royce which was put up for auction after Morton’s death.
Tumblr media
The blue gingham blouse worn in this episode also came up for auction. Ball first wore it on "The Flip Wilson Show” (1971). This blouse is also documented as being worn at birthday party for Lucie Arnaz in the 1970's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brand X! The brand name of the chart on the easel of Mr. Scott's classroom has been blacked out for broadcast.
Tumblr media
Similarly, the carton of oil has the brand name taped over, but it is clearly the Penzoil logo. Unusually, the yellow oil cans have no label on them at all!
Tumblr media
Lights! Camera! Action!  Mary Jane is unusually close to the camera (and out of her light) when she brings in the oil at the start of the repair scene.
Tumblr media
Script Girl! When Lucy is reading the Rolls Royce's owner's manual, a page flops open and there are some handwritten notes inside in cursive script. This could be some of Lucy's dialogue.
Tumblr media
Age Check! In real life, Gale Gordon was barely ten years older than Robert Rockwell.  At the time, Gordon was 66 and Rockwell was 56.
Sitcom Logic Alert!  Uncle Harry rings the doorbell at Lucy’s home, but Jack Scott walks in without knocking or ringing!
Tumblr media
Where the Driveway Ends / Where the Sky Begins!  The first time we see Harry's new Rolls in Lucy's driveway, the edge of the sky drop is visible at the top left of the frame – along with a piece of equipment or pipe hanging down. The wide shot also shows were the driveway ends and the stage floor begins.
Tumblr media
“The Not-So-Popular Mechanics” rates 4 Paper Hearts out of 5
This is the closest Lucy and Mary Jane come to replicating the antics of Lucy and Ethel or Lucy and Viv.

Production begins of world’s first electric classic Rolls-Royces
30 build-slots available for electrified Rolls-Royce Phantoms and Silver Clouds
Zero emissions and recycling at heart of product philosophy
Prices begin at £350,000
BACKGROUND
Lunaz, the leading creator of electric classic cars, is delighted to announce the start of production of the world’s only electrified Rolls-Royce cars. The Rolls-Royce marque joins existing electrified classic cars from Jaguar and Bentley in the Lunaz portfolio.
A 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V has now completed the Lunaz reengineering process. This includes ground-up restoration and the incorporation of Lunaz’s proprietary electric powertrain and full suite of hardware and software upgrades. Production allocation for the first tranche of Rolls-Royce cars by Lunaz will be strictly limited to 30. Orders are already being taken from Lunaz’s existing client base and some of the most celebrated and influential institutions in the world.
Following demand for electrified Phantoms, Lunaz elected to begin creating Rolls-Royce Silver Clouds. From today, clients are invited to secure allocation for these cars in a range of body styles, including four-door limousine, two-door coupé and drop head coupé.
The start of production of the world’s first electric Rolls-Royce cars follows a surge in demand for the electrification of pinnacle classic cars. This is driven by a rebalancing of car collections for a clean air future. To meet this demand, Lunaz is doubling its workforce at its Technical HQ in Silverstone, England.
Electric Rolls-Royces by Lunaz will be available in every global market. Allocation can only be secured through direct relationship with the factory. Prices for a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud by Lunaz starts at £350,000 (not including local taxes). Pricing for a Rolls-Royce Phantom by Lunaz starts at £500,000 (not including local taxes).
THE ELECTRIC ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM V BY LUNAZ
A Rolls-Royce Phantom by Lunaz is the only built-for-purpose, electric chauffeur-driven car in the world. These cars answer a growing requirement from individuals and the world’s leading institutions for a clean-air alternative.
A Rolls-Royce is always engineered for silent running, with power delivered smoothly with the feeling of one continuous gear. Conversion to electric amplifies these characteristics while ensuring these most significant cars remain a relevant proposition for changing sensibilities and legislative climates, particularly in major global cities.
Rolls-Royce Phantoms by Lunaz are powered by the firm’s proprietary electric powertrain. Its battery pack is the largest of its type in the world at 120 kWh, ensuring range of over 300 miles – significantly more than required for traditional chauffeur-driven use.
Every car by Lunaz is taken back to the bare metal, 3D scanned, weighed and fully restored before the conversion and re-engineering process begins. This affords every Lunaz customer the scope to inject their own design and technology desires under the guiding hand of Design Director, Jen Holloway.
The 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V by Lunaz perfectly clothes the car’s timeless proportions and unmistakable presence with a contemporary two-tone paint scheme, with Midland Grey on the upper of the car and Cinereous Grey on the lower. The hand-painted feature line that breaks the two colours is inspired by a period item specified by the car’s previous client; a pink bakelite telephone that sat between the rear occupants. Naturally, this item has been retained in the final build and upgraded to incorporate modern cellular phone technology, encrypted for privacy.
The interior scheme tastefully echoes the exterior. The very finest sustainably-sourced leather is crafted by Lunaz’ in-house specialist team and specified in Argent Grey. Instead of traditional seat piping, a double welt feature is presented in Whisper with Argent Grey, creating a contemporary pinstripe detail.
The feature line’s subtle shade of pink is referenced as an unexpected detail feature on the inside of the grab-handles, placed for the convenience of occupants as they enter and exit the car.
The original woodwork has been painstakingly restored and finished with a contemporary satin treatment. This sympathetic update is offset with rose gold inlays. This approach extends to the door cappings, front fascia and the picnic table backs affixed to the privacy division that separates the driver and rear passenger compartment.
Every car by Lunaz is built with subtly placed modern technological conveniences. The driver benefits from a fully integrated infotainment system including satellite navigation. Audio can be split between the rear and front to ensure passengers are able to listen to music without interruption from the driver’s sat-nav instructions. Climate control is also significantly upgraded to incorporate modern air conditioning with the capability to dictate differing air settings depending on each occupant’s preference.
Two screens are integrated behind the privacy division’s picnic tables allowing rear occupants to watch films and mirror screens from mobile devices. A bar service occupies the centre of the unit and has been custom built to perfectly fit the owner’s favourite brand of tequila. Every Lunaz client will be invited to specify dimensions for their beverage of choice.
The 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom by Lunaz is built in eight-seat configuration with a front bench for three occupants, rear bench for a further three and two occasional seats. Occupants throughout will benefit from Lunaz’s commitment to specifying only the very best materials. For example, rear floormats have been custom made in alpaca wool, a material that is rarer than cashmere, softer than lambswool and is considered highly sustainable.
Retaining the character of these significant cars is the priority throughout the conversion and restoration process. This extends to every detail including the weighting of switchgear which has been exhaustively engineered to operate an entirely new powertrain with the same haptic feedback as the original. Instrumentation also stays true to the spirit of the 1960s design, with delicate integration of a battery range meter and power gauge.
Every car by Lunaz is equipped with the capability for both home charging and rapid charging.
THE ELECTRIFIED ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER CLOUD BY LUNAZ
The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud is widely regarded as the most glamorous evocation of a drivers saloon in automotive history. Lunaz is delighted to breathe new life into these cars by enhancing the usability, reliability and sustainability offered by an electric powertrain.
Like every electrified classic by Lunaz, production allocation will be strictly limited and customers across the globe have already secured build slots.
Luanz is making allocation available for both fixed head and drophead body styles across Silver Cloud I, II and III. On founding the company, Founder David Lorenz sought to create the ultimate drivers’ classics. An 80kw/h battery ensures 300+ miles range, providing the confidence for drivers to take the Silver Cloud on the long continental journeys for which it was intended.
RESTORATION AND ELECTRIFICATION PROCESS
From its inception in early 2018, the company has hired the very best engineering, design and manufacturing talent. The team has been handpicked to satisfy all of the identified requirements of Lunaz’s clientele and includes expertise from Aston Martin, Ferrari, Ford, Formula 1, Jaguar, Volkswagen, McLaren and Rolls-Royce.
The restoration and conversion process represents re-engineering from the ground up. It starts with an exhaustive inspection. Each corner is then weighed to understand the original weight distribution to the gram. This information informs decisions on chassis setup, powertrain packaging and suspension. The internal combustion engine and associated systems are then removed and the chassis is prepared for electrification.
The car is then 3D scanned; this allows the engineers to create detailed CAD models to ensure technical perfection in every step of the process. The specifics of Lunaz’s electric propulsion technology is closely guarded, but each classic by Lunaz is designed, developed, engineered and tested in-house using the highest specification modules available for automotive applications.
Traditional coachbuilding and restoration skills are then employed and the car is stripped down to a bare metal shell. Even imperceptible body defects are addressed by hand before the surface finish process begins.
The same approach extends to the interior. The in-house design team make subtle adaptations to integrate modern conveniences such as satellite telecommunications, WiFi, audiovisual entertainment and navigation aids.
The accessories associated with electric powertrains including battery chargers and DC converters are sensitively integrated into the existing design of the car, utilising the fuel filler cap for charging and adapting dials to an appropriate read-out for the electrical powertrain. New air conditioning and electronic heating systems are installed and the accelerator is converted to a throttle-by-wire system. Following the uprating of braking, suspension, steering and electronics systems every circuit is tested before first start-up procedures begin.
RELEVANCE, TAILORED:
It falls upon Design Director, Jen Holloway, to create truly exceptional electric classic cars. Jen joins Lunaz following a diverse design career spanning both automotive and industrial design, holding positions in some of the most celebrated design houses and luxury brands in the world.
This includes the management of one-off client bespoke projects for Aston Martin’s ‘Q Division’. Outside of automotive, Jen was in the design leadership team for one of the world’s leading design consultancies. While there she worked across, industrial design, luxury marine aviation and high-end audio projects.
At Lunaz Jen is the conduit between the vision of the customer, bringing together both engineering and artisanal disciplines to deliver cars sensitively built in the image of their client. Jen and her team work to understand each customer’s aesthetic vision to shape an approach and create a truly one-of-a-kind design treatment that perfectly expresses the client’s tastes.
The process is an absorbing personal journey that deeply explores the Lunaz proposition in harmony with individual design requirements. Jen and her team provide a guiding hand in all colour, materials and design specification decisions. This includes carefully adapting original features to meet contemporary needs.
This ensures every Lunaz car perfectly marries the spirit of the original with the vision of the customer.

Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Drophead Coupé - 1965 by Perico001 'The size and grandeur of the car... deceive one about the performance which would do justice to many a car of more sporting pretensions. The finish, both in detail and the broader sense of equipment and trim, is superb.' - Motor magazine on the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III. Launched in 1962, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III and its Bentley S3 equivalent employed the 6,2-litre V8 engine introduced on the 'Cloud II/S2 - though with larger carburettors, new distributor, and raised compression ratio - and came with a four-speed GM-derived automatic transmission as standard equipment. Most obvious among many changes from the preceding models was the adoption of four-headlamp lighting, the absence of sidelights from the wing tops, and a slightly lower radiator shell. Inside there was improved accommodation with separate front seats and increased room for rear passengers. Notable as the last mainstream Rolls-Royce to employ a separate chassis, the Silver Cloud III proved immensely successful both at home and abroad, remaining in production until the autumn of 1965. As well as the factory-bodied cars, bespoke creations from James Young and the recently merged firm of H J Mulliner, Park Ward Ltd (by this time Rolls-Royce-owned) continued to be available on the 'Cloud III chassis for those discerning enthusiasts wealthy enough to afford them. Indeed, as the factory did not offer a convertible or drophead coupé, a coachbuilt car was the only option if one's preference was Rolls-Royce-style fresh air motoring. First introduced in 1958, H J Mulliner's was the most successful of its type, lasting into 1963 ; more modern 'straight-through wing' designs became the preferred style thereafter. Of the latter, by far the most striking were those bodied in a style originated by Park Ward. This design by Norwegian Vilhelm Koren, with its influential continuous front-to-rear wing line, first appeared, on the Bentley S2 Continental, in 1959 but did not become available on non-Continental models (both Bentley and Rolls-Royce) until after the arrival of the Silver Cloud III and S3 in 1962. These 'Chinese Eye' models - so called because of their slanting headlamp nacelles - constituted the majority of coachbuilt variants completed between 1962 and 1966. It is estimated that over the 11 years of Silver Cloud production, fewer than 130 were completed with special coachwork like this example. The 'Chinese Eye' model offered here was ordered new in 1965 by Mme la Comtesse Lucrece de Stephanos and delivered via Garage de l'Athenée in Geneva, Switzerland. Amazingly, all the correspondence between Rolls-Royce and Comtesse de Stephanos may be found in the impressive history file, including a letter complaining that the car was delivered without an ashtray! Among the factory options fitted at the Comtesse's request was a Frigiking air conditioning system. Mme la Comtesse was so proud and fond of her Rolls-Royce that she kept it until 1987, by which time it had covered 42.886 km. The car's next owner was a Mr Douglas Bell of St Albans, England, who had an 'MPH' speedometer fitted in place of the original 'KM/H' instrument. In late 1989, Mr and Mrs Smith, a couple with residences in both London and Los Angeles acquired the Rolls-Royce as one of their London cars. They commissioned a full restoration, spending over £ 125.000, a not inconsiderable amount in 1989. In 1995, at 23.000 miles, they decided to sell the car. Mr P J Fisher, a prominent Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialist, managed the sale and the car was completely re-commissioned during this period, thereby ensuring that the new owner, a Mr Steinemann from Switzerland, would be completely satisfied with his new purchase. Mr Steinemann, a keen Rolls-Royce and Bentley collector, enjoyed participating in many classic rallies with his beautiful Silver Cloud. In 2010, a Mr Stinner, also from Switzerland, bought the Rolls-Royce and had it registered with the FSVA (Federation Suisse des Vehicules Anciens), a division of the FIVA. In 2011, he entered the Silver Cloud in the Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa D'Estee, one of the most prestigious of such events, where it was most favourably received. Now, with only five owners and some 64.000 miles from new, 'LSJR571C' represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the last truly hand-built Rolls-Royces, as well as one of the rarest and most beautiful.
