Cinema Tropical Announces the Best Latin American and U.S. Latinx Films of 2022

        Cinema Tropical, the non-profit media arts organization that is leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the United States, is proud to announce its annual list of Best Latin American Films of the Year, comprised of 25 Latin American titles from twelve different countries, plus five U.S. Latinx productions—all of them by female directors—that the New York-based organization has selected as the best of the year.

     Featuring productions from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the United States, and Venezuela, the films selected in this list will compete for the 13th Annual Cinema Tropical Awards.

     The winners for Best Film, Best Director, Best First Film, and Best U.S. Latinx Film, will be announced in an in-person event on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Film at Lincoln Center in New York City.

    A jury composed of programmer Cecilia Barrionuevo, former Artistic Director of the Mar del Plata Film Festival; Andrea Picard, Senior Curator at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF); José Rodriguez, Programmer at the Tribeca Film Festival; and filmmaker Dominga Sotomayor (Too Late to Die Young); will choose the winners of the 13th Annual Cinema Tropical Awards in the Latin American cinema category.

     Filmmaker Rodrigo Reyes (499, Sansón and Me); Ximena Amescua, Manager of Artist Programs at Firelight Media; and film programmer and producer Virginia Westover, will select the winner in the U.S. Latinx category.

         Please note that all the films under consideration had a minimum of 60 minutes in length and premiered between May 1, 2021, and April 30, 2022.

I *finally* found 5 minutes to sit down and doodle a little bit!

I had a itch that I needed to scratch, because while brainstorming around for my Mottie story and whatnot, I realized that while I drew Ximena, I never drew her brother Rodrigo.

Soooo, I took the chance and just doodle both of them, and omg it was so much fun trying to envision how Rodrigo would look like in relation to Ximena and Mathias and Antoine, his nephew and niece (one thing I can say, Antoine *definitely* got the stare from him. And the temper lolol).

Let me tell you, I love love -LOVE- designing the extended family of my main OCs, but the Reyes Moreno do have a special place in my heart, no going to lie.

Okay, I love Jason Momoa and all, but I feel he’s miscast as Dante in “Fast X”. I have no doubt he can play the villain role well, but I can’t buy him as the son of a Brazilian drug lord. One, he’s not actually Brazilian, or of Hispanic/Latino ancestry. Two, he doesn’t look related to Joaquin de Almeida, the actor who played Hernan Reyes. It’s the “John Cena is Vin Diesel’s brother” stuff all over again, in that the casting is leaning more on who is popular versus who fits the character the best.

Was Oscar Isaac not available to play Dante? Or Rodrigo Santoro? I could buy either of them playing as this character. Oh well.

Oviedo Cathedral, Spain (No. 2)

The cathedral was restored in the 12th century by Archbishop Pelagius of Oviedo, the chronicler. Bishop Fernando Alfonso (1296–1301) undertook another restoration of the chapter-house, and his successor, Fernando Alvarez (1302–1321), began the cloister. At the end of the 13th century Gutierre de Toledo began the new Gothic basilica, the principal chapel bearing his arms, though it was completed by his successor Guillén. Diego Ramirez de Guzmán (1421–41) built the two chapels of the south transept (now replaced by the sacristy), the old entrance to the church, and the gallery of the cloister adjoining the chapter-house. Diego de Muros, founder of the great college at Salamanca known as the Oviedo, had the crestings of the porch wrought by Pedro de Bunyeres and Juan de Cerecedo, while Giralte de Bruselas and Juan de Balmaseda completed in the years 1512 to 1517 the carving of the precious altarpiece ordered by Valeriano Órdoñez de Villaquirán. Cristóbal de Rojas (1546–56) affixed his coat-of-arms to the completed tower, with its octagonal pyramid, one of the marvels of Gothic architecture.
