Manual de Romería, Rodrigo Cuevas (2023)
One would probably need to be equipped with some sort of historical knowledge of Asturian folk music to properly grapple with the fusion on display here. I, naturally, have no such knowledge. Sounds fun, though.

I'm reblogging this so people have more songs if they want to.
I'm not listening to much music lately but I will center my 5 songs I listen to as songs in Spanish from my Spotify list, to limit it somehow:
A Sevillana about how fashion trends change with a touch of old man yells at cloud. I like it because it's from the 40s, so just after the Spanish Civil War and it gives you a glimpse to that time. Also, it's funny. And Miguel de Molina is someone who should be more famous, he was very famous in his time but he was also a homosexual so he ended up exiling himself in Latin America.
El día de mi suerte by Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe. It's a salsa song about someone with terrible luck in life. The kind of song that is a tragedy but with good rythm and a bit of hope. A classic of salsa, and I LOVE salsa. Also I really like the rhyme in the chorus, very simple and very effective.
Caballo maldito by Queco. Fine, I don't listen to this one very often but I really like it, again because it is a sign of his time. It's a song about being addicted to heroin, sang by someone who probably was addicted to heroin or certainly knew many people who were. From the 80s, where heroin was causing ravage in Spain, and in the style of music that many people from poor working class backgrounds and petty criminals liked listening to. Notice how the drums sound like a horse ("caballo"-horse is the street name for heroin).
La bastarda y el segador from the Alan Lomax Extremadura Recordings. So this is full Spanish folklore, the kind of folklore nobody really sings anymore, it's a romance. It is probably longer than what this recording gives but it also speaks of a time period and a way of doing things. It also has an extra of naughtiness because the woman is trying to seduce the man with some innuendos. This one I listen to often and love to sing it.
Ella y yo by Don Omar. A modern classic. Don Omar is one of the greatest songwriters of our time but many people don't notice because he writes reaggeton and other "non valued" music. But this song is a masterpiece of storytelling, it has you at the edge of your sit (if you are not dancing, that is), has a plot twist. Instant favourite. Highly recommend watching the live version in (I think) Madison Square Garden because it includes dramatic acting by the singers (linked in the title).
And that is it. I will tag @jackredfieldwasmyjacob because he often shares music here. And @abluehappyface because they share songs they cover often.
Thanks @greenlikethesea for tagging me into another music thing. The rules are to list five songs I actually listen to. I think this time I'm going to go with songs I have loved live. In part to reduce repetition, as I never got to see either Dave Carter or Mike Doughty live (though Doughty is still alive and touring, so maybe one day)
1) Story Time by Trout Fishing in America (live version not available, sadly)
Trout Fishing is probably the band I've seen live the most. My dad started taking me to their family shows (shorter set lists, in the afternoon, and with some songs written for kids) when I was six(ish) and we would see them every time they had a tour stop in our area. Story Time is probably my favorite song of theirs.
2) Laugh as the Sun by Rusted Root
Another Band I've seen multiple times. They are (were? I'm not sure if they still tour) a fantastic live act. You probably know them for Send Me On My Way, which I'm pretty sure was a decent sized hit back in the day (I am an ancient being)
3) Utakata by Kagrra,
Did I arrange to bring my then-fiancé to meet my grandmother the same weekend as JRock Revolution so I could see Kagrra, live? Absolutely. At the time they were my favorite band but I couldn't justify flying to L.A. just to see them, or even to go to the weekend music fest. But when my grandmother offered to help pay for us to visit her, since she was too old to travel, I could pick the dates.
4) Unleashed by Epica
It is probably best not to go to a metal concert that ends at two am on a work night, particularly one more than an hour away from where you live. There were no regrets.
(I saw them at a much smaller venue, with no orchestra. Still amazing)
5) Under the Same Sky by Miyavi (alas, all the live versions I can find have terrible sound)
The last concert I went to, shortly before COVID hit the US. Also on a work night, but I was working at a library at the time so being a little hoarse wasn't as much of a problem as when I was teaching.
Bonus song: IIID Empire by Dir en Grey
When I first heard this song on Vulgar, my heart broke knowing I'd never see them play it in concert. But when they finally did an American tour, it was still in the rotation.
As for tagging, let's go with @immediatebreakfast @babeluda @motsimages and @sharpbutsoft and anyone else who wants to play along. I always love to hear people talk about their favorite music.
