Gone W I D E
Offwidth is not a term most climbers like to hear. With guidebooks describing pitches as 'an unrelenting struggle', 'prepare to be mauled' and 'the hilarious hanging offwidth', you do wonder why anyone would ever bother to climb them. For a long time I stayed well clear, the thrutching just wasn't worth it in my books. And then the Wide Boys came along. Their impressive tour of the States and UK round up of wide cracks was inspiring to say the least. Watching them through the screen, the pain they went through, the strain on their faces and sheer exhaustion made that sick part of you say, 'hey that looks fun lets try it'.
So I did. And it felt good.
It took me two days to climb Melvyn Bragg. My hands were torn and bleeding through thick layers of tape. It felt like someone had dropped a wrecking ball on my chest and my shins were bashed, cut and bruised you name it. But when finally topping out I felt like I had really deserved it. I find with a lot of boulder problems you don't push yourself to your physical limits. So when you find yourself at the top, you knew the whole time that you could do it. There is some doubt of ability but its often mixed with luck and conditions. Well this was different, if you don't fight and give it everything you've got then don't even bother. And like that I was hooked.

So I need another brutal test. Something that will bring back that high that I felt standing above a green, shit looking crack 3ft off the floor.
I've picked four routes, they will not be easy, they will take patience and working out, and I may not even be able to touch them. Well it wouldn't be a challenge otherwise would it? They are all quality man eaters and dead safe. I want a challenge but I don't want to feel like i'm about to die.
Goliath, Burbage South E4 5c
Tumblr media
Seems like everyone on UKC goes for the 'onsight solo'. Fuck that I want to squirm, spit and swear. Hopefully the easiest of the 4.
Ramshaw Crack, Ramshaw E4 6a
Tumblr media
I've walked under it and knew I'd be back one day. Also has the appeal that none of my mates have done it yet.
Giggling Crack, Brimham E6 6c
Tumblr media
The least appealing of the 4 but it just has to be done really. Probably get completely shut down on this.
Rays Roof, Baldstones E7 6c
Tumblr media
The big one. Climbed by Ray Jardine and originally given E4. I think it stopped Johnny Dawes in his tracks and for that its got to be worth a try. The most gymnastic of the 4 and I have this horrible feeling that I won't even be able to get into the crack. It doesn't see many ascents and I'm hoping thats because of the guide book description. But just think if I got up it!
Everyone will probably laugh at me for even compiling this list but nothing beats wiping the smirks off peoples faces who think they know better. As I said earlier, this wouldn't be a true challenge if it was going to be easy and I do think I have the smallest of delusional chances. Which is just enough to give it a go.
So cue Django Unchained soundtrack and i'm off to train.
