Rant about Robocar Poli ( Unpopular opinions and I probably might get cancelled for this)

With the help of my boyfriend, I found out about this show called “Robocar Poli”. Eventually, I found myself getting hooked into the show, not for its artistic value or its target audience, but simply because of how fun and childlike it is. I mean, it’s just another generic cute little show for babies that doesn’t warrant an extended fanbase!

And then I found out about its fan domain.

Needless to say, I was surprised to see the number of fans this silly little children’s play had. It’s not uncommon for the rarest of media material to garner attention by the common folk. But as I scroll through the pages of fanmade art, roleplays, writing, or simply awkward rambling, I began to notice a few gripes that I had. Something that made me say “What? They can’t be serious!”. Something that made me flip the table in confusion.

Friends, let’s journey through the trudge of unpopular, popular, or controversial opinions that I have to get out of my chest. I know many are going to disagree, and that is fine. I am simple here to piss you off about my opinions or make you jump in joy for having the same opinions as me. It goes both ways. And remember, hate all you want, I don’t care. I have a life to live, and making this long-winded rant is simply a sidequest from living. And for those who say “Oh! It’s just a kidshow! Stop overthinking and overanalyzing it!” This is the internet. Not everything had to go through your 14 paragraphs of made up rules.

THE RESCUE TEAM IS OVERRATED

Let’s start with the elephant in the room. the titular characters of Robocar Poli, the Broomstown Rescue Team. They are fawned upon by the citizens of their little town. And it seemed to have translated to the fanbase as well. Which is understandable, they are the protagonists and the main focus of the show. My only gripe is… how can people find them interesting?

To me, they seem like every generic main characters who are nice and kind and friendly to everyone. Except for Helly, who sticks out like a sore thumb for being slightly different with his playful personality. Still, they are boring to me. Nothing about them screams “Oh, this sounds like a character I am bound to be interested in!” Nothing. There is nothing to work with here.

I would even argue thst the side characters have more personality to them than the so called “main characters”. Atleast they don’t bore me every time they are on screen.

Sure, you can just make up your own bullshit for them in the long run. Headcanons in the fandom run around like rats, to the point some of them are considered canon by the community. An example of this is Poli being associated with space.

I stand with my point.

THE MISCHARACTERIZATIONS

First, Poli having a fear of caterpillars/bugs. If you’re going to add personality to the void of a character that is Poli, don’t just give him one trait and work off of it!

Around the fandom, I keep seeing Roy getting treated like a manchild. It just irks me. Not that it matters though, every fanbase has that. And I keep seeing him depicted as this “soft uwu boy” and holy shit can that archetype die already? He’s a grown man for God’s sake!

THE SIDE CHARACTERS ARE BETTER

Now this… this is the one i’m going to get hated on. Bear with me here. Where do I even begin with this?

I keep seeing people shit on the side characters for being “annoying” and “idiotic” but they couldn’t be more enjoyable. They are so full of life compared to the excuses for main characters. Watching them thrash around the screen has sent more reactions out of me than any focus they have attempted to place onto the rescue team. At least they have more traits that can be considered unique!

Also, they deserve far more recognition than what the fandom gives them. They get glossed over really quickly and it pisses me the fuck off. The rescue team live off of fanmade headcanons and backstories and they live off of their appearance on the show. See the difference?

I HATE CLEANY

This will ruin my already ruined image so bad… This character pushes me over the edge for how frugal and whiny he can get. I hate his overbearing voice. I hate his incredibly timid personality. I hate how everyone is so kind towards him and how I just want to shout at his face.

There's this curmudgeon outside our bank who pleads for a job there. Despite us repeatedly explaining him that the company won't accept him due to his criminal record, he just won't go away. We don't know what to do anymore!

okay, so i just really wanted to say this…kinda like a positive vent ig?

but simply being in the rcp fandom has really changed me. Having a community where I can hide and do and say the things i want to, is, to say the least, comforting. Pretty much everyone here is so sweet and kind, which really wasnt something I was used to when i first joined. I never thought that my favorite tv show as a kid would have such a loving fandom—or a fandom in general. No one I knew liked rcp, or even knew what it was. That, along with many other things, made me feel really detached from everyone else. I mean, I hyperfixate on a kid show…people thought it was weird. It wasn’t until one day, I ventured onto the internet to see if I could find really anything. When I figured out that this fandom existed, holy moly….lmao.

So many of you i’ve had positive interactions with, and I wish to have many more. Some people in this fandom I’ve barely met, but I hope we can be friends! I admire a lot of people in this fandom but I usually never know how to interact with them

I’ve met so many people because of this community, and it really made me more social in general. I’ve never really had anyone that I felt I could truly call my friend, but…. @stupidloafofbread is fucking awesome, first of all. I wanted to thank you specifically for being someone I could hang out with and simply say “hi” to. It’s weird but your like one of my only real friends and I aint gonna let that go. Happy new years, and I hope to be your friend for a while longer!! cheers 🔥🔥

Time always goes faster when you're having a good time.

Poli and Jin tried to make the best they could out of the little time they had left. Gossip, talks, chores, help, laughter, trust. They had it all.

But the three weeks have passed and now it was time to face the end of their academic year.

Their graduations were both organised on the same day.

Jin's academy chose the outskirts of Brooms Town for their graduation. All the students will be given their degrees and then a loud party shall be thrown.

The story would come to an end the same way it started. A bus reaching its destination, letting the students walk out to a place full of families greeting their children with pride.

The area itself, though not anything fancy, was decorated quite nicely. A stage where everyone will receive the degrees and the top students will give a speech. White chairs set up in even lines. Tables full of foods and drinks.

The ceremony was just about to start.

Jin found a quiet place to sit, waiting for the headmaster to give a speech.

Poli would too be given his degree today. He went through a lot to achieve it. A deserved trophy that he'll be give without a second thought.

This time I drew my favorite characters (one at the moment and from 2020 aka Roy, and a favorite character that I liked since childhood, also known as Poli)

It was hard for me to choose the colors and design Roy and Poli, but I did it(⁠ﾉ⁠◕⁠ヮ⁠◕⁠)⁠ﾉ⁠*⁠.⁠✧

Maybe in the future I'll make art of Human AU for Helly and Amber (and maybe then the team of Mountain Rescuers, Desert Rescuers)

Worriness is a trait that could cause doom to some.

The rookie always worried. About everything. About everyone. But he seemed to cast a blind eye when it came to himself. He was a functioning adult of society, Poli did have the image that he could take care of himself just fine.

The inner child that dreamed upon the stars disagreed, however. He didn't like it whenever the adult on the outside left trash bags rot inside the complex. He hated when food was not an important fuel to the officer.

The child cried when the thoughts of reaching the galaxy came around.

Poli rests his head against his desk, filled with paperwork to the brim. It had about been a week or so since the teenager found a place in his home.

Some time from the incident, too.

The academy forced Jin back into the system, up and working. Poli despised it. A young girl, so brutally brought to look at the injury a wilted rose caused, an injury that engraved itself into her.

Painful reminder, is what they say.

Now that the girl lived here, obvious changes twisted his home around. Trash to machinery that still needed to be worked on in his room, bags that found themselves in the corner.

Jin still hasn't warmed up to the star, so she sustained to making her own little corner in the apartment. He didn't mind. Poli did state several times that the inventor didn't feel the need to speak to him, just to paint him as a ghost he views himself as on the canvas.

The girl still made some attempts, and he certainly did find these attempts grateful. It was hard. Hard for her to cope. Poli was angry when the academy discarded her injury, only batting an eye to her studies.

Threatening her with failing grades if she wanted to rest. His academy was familiar, but for a reason that he, himself found unknown too;

He cared for her more than himself.

Poli sighs. He had been dreaming again while dozing off from the big binder of English he had been teaching himself with. He couldn't focus–

His focus regrains when he notices books that weren't his onto the bed. Weren't those–

Jin's books! She forgot to take them with her!

He jolts out from his chair, clumsily stumbling onto his knees. The rookie groans, picking himself up and practically crawling to the pile of unforgotten books.

Jin just left. He still has time.

Shoving the books into a navy blue shoulder bag, he faces the door.

And save her from a failing grade. Poli heads out, a duty to start his day off.
