Recently I have often thought about how much toxic models of love are extremly rooted in our society. This book by Norwood has been published in 1989: is clear, professional, almost violent but precise in its reflections; however, in 2024, i have yet to hear from girls (and boys) that pain, jealousy and control are signals of "the greatest love" because toxic stories like After or Twilight sagas are sold like icons to follow. I'm Italian, I live in a country where there's a feminicide every 72 hours but I still have to hear things like "if he\she is jealous, he\she cares about me", "I can change him\her". I'm fucking tired, that's it.

La Norwood ci aiuta a prendere consapevolezza dei ruoli giocati dalle donne che amano troppo e dai loro partner come variazioni del tipo “soccorritore”, che cerca di aiutare, “persecutore”, che vuole rifarsi e tende a punire, e “vittima”, che tende a far sentire gli altri in colpa e non si assume le sue responsabilità.

Rispetto al ruolo del “soccorritore”, l’autrice specifica: “Per molte donne che amano troppo, sentire che ci si sta prendendo cura (dirigendo e controllando) di un’altra persona, è qualcosa di familiare e confortante.

Per via della loro storia caotica e/o infelice, hanno scelto questa via come un modo per sentirsi sicure e acquisire un certo grado di autoaccettazione.

Lo fanno con gli amici, i membri della famiglia, e spesso anche sul lavoro.”

Ricordate che “sviluppare voi stesse vi rende delle partner più ambite, in quanto donne capaci di essere pienamente espressive e creative, non delle donne che si sentono incomplete (e quindi spaventate) senza un uomo.

Ironicamente, meno avrete bisogno di un partner, più verrete apprezzate come partner; e vi troverà attraenti (e sarete attratte da) un partner migliore. […]
