Hullo! I thought I’d start out by introducing myself My name’s Milo, I’m trans and non-binary and use they/them pronouns. I live on unceded Gadigal land, in so-called Sydney, Australia. I’m youeatdogchow on Instagram, and youeatdogfood on Tiktok (yes I’m on booktok), and I’m also on Goodreads, Storygraph, and Bookworm Reads. If you hadn’t guessed, I read a lot of books… like a lot… most of my free time is spent reading, and occasionally cycling through other various hobbies I never stick to (thanks ADHD). My current hobby/hyperfixation is learning how to play the harmonica, but I’ll be honest I’m not doing too well. I also get asked a lot how I concentrate on reading so well in light of my ADHD, and while I wouldn’t be able to do it so easily w/out medication (🙏 god bless u ritalin), I’m also autistic and reading is w/out a doubt my main special interest, and never fails to make me feel better and brings me back to baseline when I’m feeling dysregulated and overstimulated. And it doesn’t hurt that I work in a bookstore part-time, which fuels my dedication. I’m also a mental health support worker, and I’m in my third year (nearly fourth) of a Bachelor of Social Work at uni. I love it, but it’s definitely a slog. I’m taking a little half-year gap year fr the rest of 2023, and what inspired me to start this blog was that I’m missing studying and writing papers, and bc of this many of my latest book reviews on Goodreads, etc, have turned into what are essentially small essays. So I thought why not start a blog where I can just shout my essay-length opinions on books into the void that is the internet, and hope someone out there appreciates them.
But anyway, moving on. I generally read anywhere frm 70-90 books a year, and I mostly read non-fiction, w one or two fiction books thrown in every other month when I feel like switching it up. My nonfic choices used to predominantly be socio-political nonfic, and often around topics of policing and prison abolition and similar, w some history books thrown in, but in the last half year I’ve branched out a little, and have been reading more books on science and biology, and particularly on what someone once called “hopeful environmentalism” (an example would be Robin Wall Kimmerer’s ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ or Merlin Sheldrake’s ‘Entangled Life’). So I’ve been having fun w that!
Some of my favourite books are ‘Tomboy Survival Guide’ by Ivan Coyote (absolute all-time fave!), ‘Born to Run’ by Bruce Springsteen (maybe this seems like an odd choice but I’m a diehard Bruce fan), ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ by Robin Wall Kimmerer, ‘Inflamed’ by Rupa Marya and Raj Patel, ‘The Monster’s Bones’ by David K. Randall, ‘The Feminist Bookstore Movement’ by Kristen Hogan, ‘Are Prison’s Obsolete?’ by Angela Y. Davis, ‘Prison Writings’ by Leonard Peltier, ‘No More Police’ by Mariame Kaba and Andrea J. Ritchie, ‘Entangled Life’ by Merlin Sheldrake, and ‘Blood in the Water’ by Heather Ann Thompson, among many others.
Some other things about me: I have terrible taste in movies; most every book I read is serious and academic and sometimes even heart-wrenching, and I cope just fine, but I can’t handle serious tele and movies, and mostly just watch ridiculous and silly comedies. My favourite movie is Charlie’s Angels (2000) and Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz were definitely my gay root. I also went through an obsession w the show Our Flag Means Death, and I know when season two comes out (!!!) my obsession will def skyrocket again and it will consume me. I also have a 1308 (as of 01/09/23) day streak on Duolingo learning French, but honestly I do one lesson a day and it goes in one ear and straight out the other, so I can passably read French but can’t speak a lick of it. Also, as mentioned, I love Bruce Springsteen. I’ve seen him in concert once (best night of my life), but I have two Springsteen tattoos, and I’m always in the top .01 per cent of Springsteen listeners every Spotify wrapped, and I take my Bruce dedication seriously. I also love collecting cassette tapes (my collection is small but growing), and I have an old 1972 National Panasonic portable cassette player/recorder that is one of my most treasured possessions.
I can’t think of anything else rn, so I’ll leave it at that! Nice to meet you, please always feel free to say hi and introduce yrself back. Thank you fr popping by to check out my blog and taking the time to read my reviews :~) I hope you enjoy!

Last Remaining Seats 2018 Highlights
Last month, we hosted seven film screenings in historic theatres as we continued our Last Remaining Seats series for the 32nd consecutive year. We hope you were able to join us for this exciting series. If not, you’ll have to wait until 2019!
Here are a few highlights from the 2018 season:
Last Remaining Seats Returns to the State Theatre
The State Theatre. Photo by Mike Hume.
We opened the 2018 Last Remaining Seats season with a sold-out screening of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington at the State Theatre. It was our first time hosting a screening at this theatre since 1998!
This beautiful movie palace has a rich history. Originally known as the Loew’s State Theatre, the theatre opened on November 12, 1921 with a vaudeville show and the premiere of the film A Trip to Paradise. Designed by Weeks & Day, the theatre originally had two marquees, one for the Broadway entrance and another for its 7th Street entrance. Today, only the Broadway marquee remains.

By the 1960s, the theatre was showing first-run Spanish language films. The theatre closed its doors in the 1990s, reopening in the mid-2000s as the Universal Church of Christ. The theatre has not been restored and still bears signs of its use as a church.
We were thrilled to visit this theatre again after a twenty year hiatus, and judging by the number of photos people were taking, moviegoers were excited as well! To see more photos from Last Remaining Seats, search for the #LastRemainingSeats hashtag on Instagram.

Broadway Screenings
The Conservancy launched Last Remaining Seats in 1987 to draw attention to downtown’s historic theatres, which at the time were overlooked and underused. We continue to hold the majority of our screenings inside Broadway’s historic theatres, several of which have been rehabilitated and are in regular use as performance venues. Here are a few images from our Broadway screenings:

Last Remaining Seats Visits the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse
While Last Remaining Seats’ roots are on Broadway, there are many historic theatres outside of downtown L.A. This year, we visited the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse for the first time in Last Remaining Seats history.
San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, exterior. Photo by Douglas Hill.
Opened in 1927, the playhouse was built for John Steven McGroarty specifically as a venue for his famed Mission Play. The world-renowned production told the dramatic story of the founding of the California missions.
The building’s exterior is designed in the Mission Revival style, and the beautifully intact interior shows Spanish, Mexican, and Native American influences.
This incredible theatre was a fantastic venue for our screening of The Joy Luck Club, which was released 25 years ago this year. Based on the novel by Amy Tan, the film chronicles the relationships between four Chinese mothers and their Chinese-American daughters.

Each of our Last Remaining Seats events is more than a screening – we hold tours before the show, welcome special guest speakers, and host live entertainment. This screening of The Joy Luck Club was no different.
Guests who reserved a spot on our separately-ticketed theatre tours were able to explore the theatre in the afternoon and learn more about its history. They even listened to a song played on the Playhouse’s Wurlitzer Organ

Guests were thrilled by The Immortals, a renowned lion dance team, who performed throughout the theatre in the hour leading up to the screening. Watch a short video clip below.

Before the film, three cast members of The Joy Luck Club, Kiều Chinh, Lisa Lu, and France Nuyen, along with the film's executive producer Janet Yang, took the stage to discuss the significance of this incredible film and Asian-American representation in Hollywood. L.A.-based sociologist and writer Nancy Wang Yuen moderated this thought-provoking panel discussion.

Membership Perks
As always, Conservancy members had first dibs on movie tickets and theatre tour reservations: members are entitled to purchase tickets during our members-only presale. Additionally, members could enter the theatre and select their seats before members of the general public.

Thank you to everyone who joined or renewed their membership at Last Remaining Seats this year! Your membership supports our preservation efforts throughout Los Angeles County. Plus, you’re eligible to participate in the member presale in 2019!
It’s never too late to join the Conservancy - join online today.
Last Remaining Seats Committee
This series would not happen without the hard work of our volunteers! In addition to the many volunteers who help at each screening, the hardworking members of our volunteer Last Remaining Seats Committee work throughout the year to plan the series. We would like to thank the 37 members of the Committee (listed below) who selected this year’s films and then worked together in small teams to develop the photo stations, pre-show entertainment, and so much more for each of the events.

A huge thanks to the experts who helped us on short notice with the video. Especially “Our World in Data”, the online publication for research and data on the world’s largest problems – and how to make progress solving them. Check out their site. It also includes a constantly updated page on the Corona Pandemic.
In December 2019 the Chinese authorities notified the world that a virus was spreading through their communities. In the following months it spread to other countries, with cases doubling within days. This virus is the “Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2”, that causes the disease called COVID19, and that everyone simply calls Coronavirus.
What actually happens when it infects a human and what should we all do?

Chosen though he may be Hazily they evade me Prophecies, hypocrisies, betray me.
MACE: Boom, go the clones and droids. Hush go the politicians plotting their ploys We got the Sith playing with us like a kid with a toy We're a Council of men. Now they sending us boys? Well I’ll be damned, if I let this grandstanding Chancellor Push plans on me. I'm a Jedi Master That’s a rank, young Skywalker will never reach Long as I, Mace Windu, sit in this seat.
OBI-WAN: The Council has spoken YODA/MACE: The Council has spoken
ANAKIN: Hold up, I didn’t ask for this, Mace But you rejecting me? That’s a f****n disgrace
OBI-WAN KENOBI: Anakin, enough. You’re out of place.
ANAKIN: Back me up, Obi-Wan. Look me in the face And tell me I don’t deserve this. You know my service. Dooku shook you, and I killed him, I earned this- I've been rippin every mission that you asked me to Palpatine sees it, why can’t you?
OBI-WAN: Blast. Is he right? Is he Master? Is he Knight? He’s gonna be more than anybody before but Will be it Dark or Light? Quiet. Obi-Wan you’re scaring yourself again This guy's your brother, he’s your friend. Shut up and tow the company line. Everything will be fine. But for a second pretend… If the boy turns, isn’t that on you? Cuts like a saber burns. What would Qui-Gon do? What am I gon' do? ...My job. Gotta see this through. Gotta peace to keep, a war win The Sith don’t sleep. Still in the Jedi do I trust The shadow's deep. It’s darkening. But it's not him. Yo, Anakin is one of us.
YODA/MACE: The Council has spoken OBI-WAN: I raised you like a son I think of all that we’ve been through You are the Chosen One And I believe in you
ANAKIN: Padme, something's not right with me I’m scared I’m not the Jedi that I should be
PADME: What's the matter Ani? You're gonna be a father, what else matters Ani?
ANAKIN: Premonitions I can't shake Someone trying to take you away from me, And in my dreams Padme, I can hear your screams
PADME: Breathe in, breathe out, I don't doubt your strength, don’t you doubt mine now I've been through the fire. Imma be alright. But don't you run away from me, we're running out of time. Check.
The Senate is a shell of what it once was To thunderous applause they fall backwards With Palpatine, democratic means are going extinct Any who'd oppose him are frozen like statues
ANAKIN: You’re wrong about the Chancellor, He knows of a power... It could be our answer.
PADME: The answer is go back to Naboo Raise our child free of this taboo Anakin, what else can we do? I must be with my people, that includes our family too Our family, boo Our family, Ani, what can we do? What can we do?
ANAKIN: Alone…So much noise. Back home. There was so much sand. I remember my mother's voice. I remember how she took my hand.
SHMI: Ani, are you okay?
ANAKIN: Mom, I failed you then, but not her. I won't fail again, that's my word. My love, I swear that nothing will hurt you, I’m sick of living in this twisted image of virtue Yoda's riddles, Mace's high horse, Obi-Wan preaching on like he knows Force. There’s a black hole in my dark soul that even that goodie-goodie Kenobi can’t control I want more, I want her, I want us to rule together, Beat death, live forever. Serve a higher power, higher Force, Climb the maiden's tower, be their Lord And these words feel wicked but I won't deny. This Council's the gravity that I'll defy. If you’re not the master, then you’re just the slave I’ll be in my grave before I roll with that I will bring disaster, but if her it saves I will pay that price and I will not look back
OBI-WAN/PADME/MACE/SHMI/YODA: Come baack ANAKIN: [beatbox]
OBI-WAN/YODA/MACE: The Council has spoken PADME/SHMI: Ani are you okay, are you okay, Ani?
MACE: The Council has spoken. YODA: At war we are and Chosen though he may be MACE: The Council has spoken. OBI-WAN Prophecies ANAKIN Hypocrisies PADME: Betray me.

Biblical Series I: Introduction to the Idea of God
Lecture I in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories series from May 16th at Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. In this lecture, I describe what I consider to be the idea of God, which is at least partly the notion of sovereignty and power, divorced from any concrete sovereign or particular, individual person of power. I also suggest that God, as Father, is something akin to the spirit or pattern inherent in the human hierarchy of authority, which is based in turn on the dominance hierarchies characterizing animals.

@maryjblige, @ludacris, and @_maxwell_ the Latest to Join @VH1's Second Annual Mother's Day Special "Dear Mama: An Event to Honor Moms"....
It was recently announced that Mary J. Blige, Ludacris, and Maxwell were the latest artists to be added to VH1's list of stars to honor their mothers in “Dear Mama: An Event To Honor Moms” whichpremieres on Monday, May 8th at 10 PM ET/PT. Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominee Anthony Anderson will return as host along with VH1 fan favorite, actress, and New York Times best-selling author La La Anthony. “Dear Mama: An Event To Honor Moms” honors mothers with celebrity guests paying tribute to the women who have shaped their success.
Yesterday, VH1 will also premiered a new documentary from Blige titled STRENGTH OF A WOMAN: AN ALBUM DOCUMENTARY. The film gave fans a close and intimate look at the making of the just released album, with studio footage and exclusive interviews with Blige, as well as the inspiration behind the writing and direction.
Mary J. Blige is an iconic singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist. She has sold over 50 million albums and 25 million singles worldwide, garnered nine GRAMMY® Awards (plus a staggering 32 nominations), a Gold Globe nomination and five American Music Awards. She holds the distinction of being the only artist to have won GRAMMYs® in the R&B, hip-hop, pop, and gospel categories. She is amongst a handful of entertainers to release eight or more multiplatinum albums, with Billboard naming her “the most successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years”.
The career of the multitalented CHRIS “LUDACRIS” BRIDGES can best be described as remarkable. As a recording artist, he has sold more than 15 million albums domestically, thanks to the blockbuster success of such singles as “Stand Up,” “Get Back,” “Southern Hospitality,” “Number One Spot,” “Money Maker” and “My Chick Bad.” All of these records were accompanied by ingenious videos that demonstrated Bridges’ far-reaching imagination, and his willingness to stretch the boundaries of what rap videos should look and feel like.
Most recently, Bridges starred in the highly anticipated The Fate of the Furious, which broke records at the box office, becoming the highest grossing film opening worldwide.
Bridge’s philanthropic efforts rival his entertainment accomplishments. He started The Ludacris Foundation in 2001 which focuses on helping the youth in his hometown of Atlanta. In addition, he has recently partnered with No Kid Hungry and Feeding America.
Currently, Bridges is in Los Angeles shooting MTV’s revived Fear Factor, which will premiere on May 30, 2017. He is both a host and executive producer on the show. This is the first project from the new overall deal between Bridges and MTV.
Maxwell has artfully managed to transfix music lovers for more than two decades, releasing four studio albums, all in his own time – all duly anointed as classics. Maxwell has had a busy past 12 months. In July, he released his much-anticipated ‘blackSUMMERS’night,’ the second installment of his musical trilogy encompassing his 20+ year career. The album garnered praise from Rolling Stone, SPIN, Complex, NPR and more, and the album earned him his third-Grammy (Best R&B Song for “Lake By The Ocean”), an NAACP Image Award (Outstanding Male Artist), and a Soul Train Award (Best R&B/Soul Male Artist).
Blige, Ludacris, & Kelly Rowland will appear alongside previously announced artists Robin Thicke, Maxwell and DJ Khaled.
“Dear Mama: An Event To Honor Moms” will take place at the famed Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in Pasadena, California.
Official sponsors of “Dear Mama: An Event To Honor Moms” include America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses®, DOVE® I Chocolate, Honey Bunches of Oats®, Strongbow Hard Apple Ciders, Tide PODS®, T.J.Maxx, and Unilever.
“Dear Mama: An Event To Honor Moms” is being produced by Flavor Unit and Jesse Collins Entertainment. Shakim Compere, Queen Latifah, Jesse Collins, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay are Executive Producers. For VH1, Amy Doyle, Ryan Kroft, and Elena Diaz are Executive Producers, Paige Miller is Coordinating Producer, and Joe Buoye is Executive in Charge of Production.

Most recently, Kelly joined the lineup as a judge on The Voice Australia which she is currently filming down under.
