Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley went through horrific transformations while playing two sides of the same woman in “The Substance.” Karla Sofía Gascón alone plays two incarnations of the same person — cartel boss Manitas and the title character after gender-affirming surgery in “Emilia Pérez.” Cynthia Erivo is the green-skinned Elphaba in “Wicked”; Bill Skarsgård is the clawed vampire Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu”; and Sebastian Stan struggles to find his inner goodness as a man with neurofibromatosis in “A Different Man.”

Five distinct films with a key commonality: All the character looks were created by this year’s hair and makeup Oscar nominees.

The Envelope reached out to those teams to find out just what went into these creations.

‘A Different Man’

Proudest moment

Marino: The proudest moment was right after the first makeup test. We got to see Sebastian look in the mirror and start acting in the makeup. I knew then that it was going to work.

Jurado: To see it all work so well on the big screen was a real delight. It could have so easily looked like a big stiff mask, but instead, the makeup truly made Sebastian look like a man with neurofibromatosis. Being able to accurately represent people who have this condition is so very important.

Meet the makeup wizard who transformed Sebastian Stan into ‘A Different Man’

Marino: The main makeup for Edward (Stan), since he is wearing full-face prosthetics and little pieces around the neck. The difficulty each day with the look was the constant change of his skin conditions. Some days were clean, and then some days he was scabby and flaking.

Presto: Edward’s look was the most difficult makeup I’ve ever been a part of — it took three of us, every day, to complete. What made it more arduous was our working [space]. There was no makeup trailer. Every day we had to lug our gear to each location in New York City and set up. At the end of the day, we would clean up Sebastian, pack our kits and be ready to do it all over again the next day.

Jurado: Definitely the day where Edward starts ripping his face off. The softness and weight of the appliances made application extremely difficult, but it was so rewarding to see how successful the look was that we achieved.

Best solution to a problem

Presto: During the scene when Edward starts peeling his face in the mirror, we had to create a system for quick resets for each take. After brainstorming and testing, we used a special mix that included Methocel. This helped keep the rest time down to a minimum while still preserving the makeup.

Jurado: Sebastian has very thick hair, and because the appliance had to lay over part of his hair, which the wig sits on and combs into his natural hair, it was challenging to get his hair to lay super flat with hair product alone. We ended up using Opsite tape on top of his hair to press it down even further. This process also allowed us to use Pax paint over the Opsite to even further hide his natural hairline.

What would you do differently if you had to do it all again?

Marino: I wouldn’t change anything. I believe when a makeup is created and filmed, it is meant to be. When a character’s makeup is created, it’s alive, with flaws and all.

Anne Killigrew, the eldest of seven daughters among twelve children of Sir Robert (1579-1633) and Lady Mary (Woodhouse) Killigrew, was baptized on September 7, 1607 at Hanworth, Middlesex. Her father took interest in his daughters' educations, and raised them in a stimulating intellectual environment, with the poets John Donne (1572-1631) and Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687), the musician and painter Nicholas Lanier (1588-1666), and the philosopher and statesman Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) figuring among the family's intimates. She descended from a long line of royalists and courtiers, and it was reportedly Charles I (1600-49) who orchestrated her match with George Kirke, a Groom to the Royal Bedchamber whose service to Charles pre-dated his accession to the throne in 1625.

Portrait Description

This portrait was almost certainly painted to commemorate Anne Kirke's appointment in 1637 as Dresser to Queen Henrietta Maria. She is depicted wearing a golden silk dress, decorated with a swath of brown gauze across the torso, and iridiscent pearls that reflect the burnished highlights of the silk. With a pointed finger, Anne directs our attention to a leaping dog, a butterfly, and a flowering rosebush. These symbols of fidelity, willingness to serve, and pain endured for pleasure, may refer to her happy marriage and achievements at court.

okay i need to get this off my chest so here's the celebs that remind me of hockey players.

it's mostly based on their looks, but their personalities have a hand with a few of them

(some will have more explanation than others lol)

number one (1) is sidney crosby (pitts penguins) and tom cruise (actor)

this i think i for multiple reasons not only do i think they share similarities look-wise (especially younger) but i think their career is similar in the sense of gaining fame during their youth and still doing what made them famous in later years.

second up is elias pettersson (van canucks #40) and joost klien (singer)

i don't really have much on this cause i'm probably desperately wrong. the bleach-blonde hair is too blinding to actually see the difference in thier faces ig. they got a certain vibe to em idk dude

baby petey is bonus for the mullet:

for number three (3) we have john marino (utah hockey club) and i actually have two (2) for him but the first is montana jordan (actor)

i feel like they are reasonably similar (head shape, eyes and eyebrows, hair etc) along with vibes. this is the more accurate out of the two (2) in my opinion

the other is stephen nedoroscik (olympic gymnast)

i don't really know what to say about this... you see it though right??? like the smile (teeth aside obviously, talking smile lines + squinty eye smile). nose and ears maybe?? idkkkk

number four (4)!! jt miller (ny rangers <- took everything in me not to put canucks. rip jt) and jensen ackles (actor/singer ig)

again not sure what to say, speak for itself. cause like the hair and beard come onnnn, and their side profile is on point too. but also their personality too. i do think jt and jensen look most alike now, so like they look the most similar when they're older.

and lastly we got number five (5) andrei svechnikov (carolina hurricanes) and robert sean leonard (actor) (my pookiesss)

if bobby had a beefer, blonder, taller twin it would be andrei. for me it's really the lower half of the face. nose, smile (look at the dimplesss) chin, and idk but like their lips literally same if that's not to weird to say. + the brown beauties (their eye shape is very close i think). these two are probably always on my mind like it's just so much similarities to me (two (2) extra pics for them cause i love them)
