Ojibwa: A language like Hickory roots
Ok, don’t come for me because I’m making tree references already. I feel like I’ve already established my love for nature. So, why did I make a Hickory tree reference? Hickory trees have a deep multilayer root system that both supports and nourishes the tree. Modern Ojibwa children (and adult language learners) have opportunities to learn the traditional Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe, Ojibway, Ojibwa, Southwestern Chippewa, and Chippewa) language in formal education settings. This translated in my mind to deep roots providing stability to the tree, here meaning traditional language learning supports cultural practices.
Culture, like language, is learned and not innate. They are intertwined and build upon each other. Studying History and Anthropology I have made a discovery that unless I learn a language or painstakingly translate a source I am not getting the full scope of primary resources and have to rely on someone else’s translating skills. I cannot fathom the loss of language in a person who was raised in a culture that originally spoke it. It would be like losing a precious memory of a defining life moment. Considering this I went on a search for what Ojibwe sounded like and found this lovely gentleman on TikTok:

What is functionalism?
Functionalism is a school of thought looking at different societies to see how they are structured and how the society functions. When thinking like a functionalist, one must put aside ethnocentric thinking and focus on the group of study. It is said that Malinowski “wanted to debunk stereotypes of “savage” people as irrational, compulsive slaves to their passions” “Lavenda, 2007, p.223) He looked past what was different from himself and analyzed the hidden sophistication in different societies. His mind was truly remarkable and he was one of, if not the most, influential anthropologist of all time.

on doing Lent while pregnant and religiously conflicted
Lent, n. a forty(ish)-day Christian liturgical season focused on fasting and prayer and giving, and with which I have a complicated relationship
If our understanding of reality is the product of a dialectic between experience and language (or, more broadly, culture), then ambiguity will never be permanently removed from any of the symbolic systems that human beings invent. Reflexive consciousness makes humans aware of alternatives. The experience of doubt, of not being sure what to believe, is never far behind.
— Emily A. Schultz and Robert H. Lavenda, Cultural Anthropology: A Perspective on the Human Condition, Ninth Edition
It’s Ash Wednesday, and there’s a little bit of both death and new life for me in owning this openly: These days, I consider myself fundamentally agnostic by conviction. I have chosen to stay in the church and continue trying to practice Christian faith, but it wasn’t an easy choice. It’s not that I don’t have religious feelings; I do. I also respect religion, and I see and value its benefits to human well-being. It’s just that my understanding of reality is out of sync with theological claims, and my conscience is out of sync with some of the rules.
Regardless of whether I’m right or wrong in those convictions and feelings, I believe it’s dangerous to violate personal conscience, especially when it’s operating in the direction of non-harm. Consequently, there’s now some necessary distance between me and the orthodoxy and orthopraxy that I used to let define me.
All my life I have been told that the kind of conviction I hold now is dark and sad and shallow. But this unknowing is only as dark and sad and shallow as the night sky, and the night sky is deep and full of stars.
Fasting is contraindicated during pregnancy. It also feels beyond superfluous. Pregnancy is like a forty-week Lent, complete with food restrictions, giving up most caffeine and all alcohol, and enough physical pain to make medieval penances like flagellation sound relatively bearable.
It is, of course–again, like Lent–replete with anticipation. There’s some spiritual poetry in the fact that my due date falls shortly after Easter.
I want to make of Lent what I can, given the circumstances. For this, my bullet journal and I have a threefold thematic goal for the Lenten disciplines that are available to me: mindfulness, simplicity, preparation.
Mindfulness, because I’ve been attempting to get more of that practice in my life for a year now. It is as solid a tool against anxiety and for a quiet and peaceful mind as I’ve ever found. The plan: work a little quiet prayer and a minimum of ten minutes of mindfulness meditation into my daily routine.
Simplicity, because distraction is the natural enemy of both mindfulness and preparation as well as of becoming who I’d like to be: a quiet, healing, affirming presence in this polarized and jeopardized society. The plan: simplify both in home and in heart, by removing what stands in the way of needs, goals, and values.
Preparation, because with the baby coming, I have a lot of schoolwork to complete as soon as possible, and I also need to prepare house and heart to receive her. The plan: let the disciplines of mindfulness and simplicity guide and support me in achieving those goals.
For all who choose to participate: may you find consolation in your Lenten practices, and come to a happy Easter.
