I have been having a strong urge to make another puppet oc, so alas, take this pain iv made-
When I mean pain, I literally mean it- JDHHFHDH I got so stressed out trying to color him that my adrenaline spiked and now I’m trying to relax LMAOOOO
but anyway, here’s Robbie (not to be confused with Robert), a Howdy family member oc, cause who am I as a howdy supremacy supporter if I didn’t have SOMEBODY related to him smhh. He’s kinda an smartass/asshole (being a 3 horned rhinoceros beetle) but when ya get to know the bastard he’s a nerdy lil goof who’ll never shut up about literally anything he’s done. How many crimes has he committed? He lost count smh.
he’s a little bit more of a serious character-? But he’s kinda still in the same playing field as Dr.Stone is where they are a “guest character”. Also unlike Dr.Stone who has a set occupation, Robbie hops from job to job, one day he’s working at your local seven eleven, the other day he’s a astronaut going to space (don’t ask how he the hell he even got in- he’s too crafty for his own good-)
#It’s been like two hours now b l e h I feel like garbage#Welcome home#welcome home oc#welcome home howdy#welcome home wally#Iv been wanting to make a character for a while now with a long ass s n o o t#Even tho technically that’s not his nose it’s a horn#Also he totally doesn’t sleep on random people’s couches#One of his major crimes he constantly commits is identity theft#I need to draw gay muppets next to heal my w o u n D s#Howdy pillar#Wally darling#Welcome home oc robbie#robbie robs

Wait. Waitwaitwaitwait.
Robbie said Dorian was inexperienced. Yeah okay we knew that.
Does that mean Chet was Dorian's first kiss?!
#silver sending stones#dorian storm#someone who actually watches the cool down please tell me#i dont think i have access to the cool downs#otherwise i would watch#but like. did robbie say anything about it?#and i dont think he kissed anyone in exu#so like#my guy#WAS CHETNEY DORIANS FIRST KISS#or did drama club come in clutch#my problem with that is; if dorian KISSED people in drama club. he definitely would have done more#which he hasnt. ala “dorians inexperienced”#so like 👀#i must know#dorian saw the happenings on “the couch” and was like “thats unsanitary” and proceeded not to reach any bases in drama club#my theatre class had a couch but my band had a piano

Ugh not me reading two books in a row with terrible endings and one that didn't get interesting until the ending. Why can't every book I read be Captive Prince? 😭
#captive prince#i'm in a stage of “nothing will ever be as good as cp so why bother reading?”#gilded by marissa meyer had a slog of a second act and was too insta-lovey#spinning silver by naomi novik was pretty good until the last 5 pages ruined the characters#and another first chance by robbie couch took a pretty fucked up turn that wasn't really addressed like it should have been

Extremely random post, but I finished “Another first chance” by Robbie Couch and for literally the whole time I thought that the twist was going to be ghosts. Lik I guess that is sort of similar to what actually happened, but I thought it would be a bit different. Instead of River looking at the photo of him and Nash and noticing that Nash was gone, I thought he was going to look at the first photo he accidentally made of his empty bed and suddenly see Dylan sitting there. Lol, I guess I get carried away with theories a bit sometime (=

Thinking about how Robby doesn’t indulge in drinking while his peers are getting wasted. He shrugs it off, saying he doesn’t need to drink to be cool. It comes off as Robby being disciplined, but it’s really just trauma. He’s been dealing with an alcoholic and addicted mother, and his dad is obviously an alcoholic too. They drink and drug so often that Robby has been significantly neglected. Robby also displays some of the core traits of (adult) children of alcoholics (ACOA), including struggling with a sense of self and constantly modifying their identity to meet the approval of others, being extremely loyal to people even when they are betrayed, being able to lie very easily even when it’s just as easy to tell the truth, being overly critical of one’s self, and obsessively dedicating one’s self to something in order to avoid the problems in their lives. Robby doesn’t know who he is, and he pretty much molds his personality around the people he is with. He doesn’t have a strong sense of self. He does self isolate, and he can’t cope well with conflict.
When Sam gets wasted, he tries to do damage control just like he’d been doing with his mother. He tried to get her to stop drinking before she completely crashed, too. When Daniel yells at him for Sam’s decision to drink irresponsibly, it hurts not just because Daniel unfairly accuses him of screwing everything up when Sam made that choice but because Robby has to deal with that added layer of “you’ll turn out just like them” (his addict parents). Growing up with alcoholics is very hard and it’s not often portrayed authentically on screen, but the mere implication that Robby could be an alcoholic is devastating for him as it is for a lot of children of alcoholics, especially when he wasn’t the one drinking irresponsibly. When you look at the profile of a child of alcoholics, Robby fits it perfectly. Whether it was intended or not, Robby acts just like a child of alcoholics would. Anyway, this is just to say Robby’s trauma around alcohol and substance abuse and having to parent his parents is super relatable, and I wish it were discussed more.
#robby keene#cobra kai#i say this as my dad came home drunk#& is now getting wasted on the couch#living w/ alcoholics is so hard#b/c they literally don’t care enough about you to stop#i have begged them to stop#but they won’t b/c they value a drink over my well-being#alcoholism tw#text post

Reading update
Best Men by Sidney Karger - 3.5/5 stars
Man. When I started reading this, I was positive I was going to rate it 5 stars. The first third or so was hysterical, often to the point of me not being able to breathe because I was laughing so hard. Ultimately though, the romance fell extremely flat. There wasn't really enough development for it, and I don't think it boils down to a marketing issue—the romance is too big of a focus to say, "Oh, this was just general fiction they wanted to market as a romcom." It really was an issue with the romance just not being very well written. Another issue I had was that at times, the writing was very...cringey. Like, I couldn't tell if the author was trying to keep Max's voice (which was funny) or if he just can't write genuinely heartfelt scenes. The big, romantic sex scene could probably be added to that one post with the collection of horribly written sex scenes.
There were also some weird inaccuracies about Midwesterners that of course bugged me as a Midwesterner. We call soda "Coke?" No we don't. It's pop. Maybe there's some southern creep into the Midwest but I've N E V E R heard anyone say Coke when they meant pop generally. Also, Midwesterners like pools? I mean I guess, but we learn to swim in lakes (as opposed to the ocean).
In case you're wondering, I knocked an entire star off for the Midwest inaccuracies.
Mountain Ghost Stories and Curious Tales of Western North Carolina, edited by Randy Russell and Janet Barnett - 3.5/5 stars
I picked this up at one of the visitor centers in Great Smoky Mountains National Park on our trip there last fall. Most of these are more like folk stories than ghost stories.
Timberdark by Darren Charlton - 5/5 stars
What if the real dystopia isn't the zombie apocalypse, but "normal" life?
I was going to leave it at that but NO, I have more to say. Why aren't these books more popular? Why isn't everyone screaming about how gorgeous they are and how this is what YA should be? Why do they not have a US publisher? Why are they not all over freaking BookTok tables at bookstores?
I honestly don't even want to say that much about the Wranglestone duology because I want everyone to read them and experience them. Wranglestone and Timberdark are genuinely a couple of the most gorgeous books I've ever read, Timberdark in particular.
Road of Bones by Christopher Golden - 3.25/5
Immaculate vibes and incredible setting. Not much more to it than that.
Ravensong by Carla Fay - DNF
At 4 pages in. I hated everything about this book immediately and I don't have a good reason.
Maelstrom by Jordan L Hawk - 4.5/5 stars
BODY SWAP.
A Pocketful of Lies: Collected Stories by KJ Charles - 5/5 stars
5/5 stars for Masters in This Hall alone.
If I See You Again Tomorrow by Robby Couch - 4.25/5 stars
Considering this is billed and marketed as a romance, there was surprisingly little romance in it. It was good, though. Robby Couch is one of my favorite queer YA romance writers.
Eleventh Hour by Elin Gregory - 3.75/5 stars
OMG they were mission partners! Interwar period gay spies in London, hard to go wrong.
Out in the Open by AJ Truman - 3.75/5 stars
Truman has this habit of describing sex scenes in bizarre and not particularly sexy ways ("I sucked his cock a thousand times harder than a vacuum cleaner" is an actual real comparison from this book), but his books are funny with endearing characters, so I give him a pass. I also think it MIGHT be something he does when he's writing younger characters, because the other time it was really pronounced was in The Barkeep and the Bro, where one of the characters was in his mid 20s (Out in the Open is a college romance).
Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell - 5/5 stars (reread)
This book was as good, if not better, the second time around. Kiem is so funny and lovable and Jainan's history made me even more sad. I really love how well Maxwell handles the fact that Jainan was in an abusive marriage for five years while still writing a slow burn romance that doesn't span multiple books. This book is an inspiration to me and is pretty much my perfect book—gay and sci-fi. On this reread I could really see its influence on my own writing, haha. Which is cool to know that I can still be influenced in a major way even this far into my writing life!
Anyway if you haven't read this book, I honestly don't know what you're waiting for. Read it read it reeeeead ittttt.
A Veil of Gods and Kings by Nicole Bailey - DNF
DNF at 15 pages. The main character was annoying and the author took 'show don't tell' a little too far. Everything was described in flowery, overwrought purple prose. Seriously, it's a road. You can just say it's a road. Also I never want to see 'Artemis' shortened to 'Temi' ever again. Please just no.

I forgot that the space shuttle malfunction happened pre-spider bite in 1610 so Jameson's son is just dead
#oliverliveblogs#usm#the Bullit arc was always a prime candidate for Ultimate adaptation and it's not done badly#but I'm a tad bitter about Robbie's role in it being given over to Urich and Jameson respectively#when the discussion that law and order is not an aracial idea was very clearly spelled out in the 60s but sublimated into ''mutants'' here#the omission doesn't seem pointed--it flows better with the ongoing storyline about justice and *class*--but it keeps Robbie sidelined#and it's not like the 60s message is outdated. you read those comics and the couched language of racism is VERY familiar still#also I just want to know more about Robbie and that would have been a good chance to start
