UK: Military to deliver petrol to UK garages from Monday to save Johnson reputation
The UK government announces 300 military personel is employ as lorry drivers to deliver petrol supply fot petrol stations is due to begin on Monday. Almost 200 servicemen and women, 100 of them drivers, will provide "temporary" support to ease pressure on stations.
Military personnel are currently training at haulier sites and will be on the road delivering fuel supplies across the country to "help fuel stocks further improve" from Monday, the government said.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said personnel would be seen working alongside drivers this weekend following training this week.
In addition to the 300 fuel tanker drivers being allowed to work temporarily in the UK, temporary visas are also being offered to 4,700 food haulage drivers who are able to arrive from late October and leave by 28 February 2022.
Visas are being offered to a further 5,500 poultry workers who can come from late October and stay until 31 December.
Previously, the government said these temporary visas would last until Christmas Eve.
Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said: "Thanks to the immense efforts of industry over the past week, we are seeing continued signs that the situation at the pumps is slowly improving. UK forecourt stock levels are trending up, deliveries of fuel to forecourts are above normal levels, and fuel demand is stabilising.
"It's important to stress there is no national shortage of fuel in the UK, and people should continue to buy fuel as normal. The sooner we return to our normal buying habits, the sooner we can return to normal."
Mr Wallace said: "While the situation is stabilising, our armed forces are there to fill in any critical vacancies and help keep the country on the move by supporting the industry to deliver fuel to forecourts."

A go-anywhere jet vac tanker designed for use by the military and United Nations relief teams is proving its worth helping keep sewers running smoothly across central and southern England.
The JHL recycling jet vac tanker is being used by Lanes Group plc to access remote sewers and culverts across the most difficult terrain on behalf of Thames Water.
Lanes, Thames Water’s wastewater network services maintenance partner, is using the specialist vehicle for more productive planned cleaning of main sewers and to respond rapidly to off-road blockages.
Michael Hall, Head of Operations for Lanes Utilities, said: “Our 8×8 jet vac tanker is the only vehicle of its kind operating in the UK, and it’s all-terrain capability is proving its worth time and again.
“We can quickly reach wastewater assets that are far from a road or firm ground. The vehicle is also ready to be deployed if there is a flood to maintain critical assets such as pumping stations.”
The vehicle has enhanced ground clearance plus eight-wheel drive and steering. It was originally designed to support wastewater management in remote military bases and humanitarian aid camps.
Two Lanes drainage engineers have now undergone specialist off-road training in the vehicle to support their work in some of the most remote and hard-to-reach locations across the Thames Water region.
The training has taught them how to make the best use of the jet vac tanker’s ability to cope with boggy and unstable ground and risk assess conditions to ensure all off-road hazards are fully considered.
In Long Hanborough, in Oxfordshire, the vehicle has been used to travel 1,000 metres across farm and construction land that had been churned up by excavators to carry out a large sewer clean.
Without the JHL 8×8, the project could only have been completed with a recycler jet vac tanker, two tracked portable jetting reels and the deployment of a confined space entry team.
Jet vac operative Chris Wood, who is the vehicle’s main driver, said: “This is an extraordinary piece it kit. It makes our off-road work much more productive and allows us to react more quickly to potential pollution incidents.
“Importantly, because I can drive right up to a manhole, wherever it is, and vacuum blockage material from the sewer, we don’t have to send in a confined space team which is a major safety boost.
“There hasn’t been a project yet where we haven’t felt confident that we can reach an off-road sewer. Even when we’ve been axle-deep in mud, it has kept on going.”
Off-road Training Specialist Mark Stopps, of Explore the Country, near Milton Keynes, who led the training, said: “The 8×8 jet vac is a very impressive piece of machinery.
“It has better off-road capabilities than many similar-sized military vehicles. Hats off, also, to Lanes for giving its drivers off-road training, it’s not something that many users of all-terrain vehicles think of doing.”

RESCUED SAILOR, 84, TO ATTEMPT SHETLAND TO NORWAY ADVENTURE AGAIN…. An 84-year-old yachtsman who was rescued between Shetland and Norway two years ago is to attempt the journey again. Julian Mustoe's yacht Harrier of Down suffered rudder problems in strong winds, and then sank while being towed by coastguards. A crowd funding appeal raised £10,000 to get him a new boat, Zepherus. He now hopes to set off from Lerwick to Bergen in the next few days, depending on the weather conditions. The 25ft Harrier of Down lost steering about 100 miles off the coast of Shetland in October 2015. Mr Mustoe was rescued by a Norwegian Coastguard vessel after his stricken boat began drifting towards an oil platform. The yacht was taken under tow, but sank. Bad weather hampered the operation It came within half a mile of Total's Alwyn North platform. The sailor had lived on the boat for 10 years. Mr Mustoe lost virtually all of his possessions when the yacht sank. The experienced yachtsman said of his forthcoming adventure: "I am going to have another go at it. "I'm going to take a second emergency rudder with me, so that if the same trouble occurs then I shall have an answer.

Butterfly Conservation Scotland is now working to see if a breeding colony has been established in the area. Mr Cowe said: "It is not every day that something as special as this is found when out and about on a regular butterfly foray. "It was a very ragged and worn individual found feeding on ragwort in the grassy edge of an arable field." The white-letter hairstreak suffered its worst year on record in 2016 according to the UK Butterfly Monitoring Survey and, although widespread across England and Wales, has suffered a 72% decline over the last decade.

Fuel was then pumped to Rosyth-built HMS Queen Elizabeth using two 250m-long (820.2ft) hoses. The preferred method of refuelling the aircraft carrier, by a fuel tanker at sea, is due to be done for the first time next year. HMS Queen Elizabeth made two visits to Invergordon during the sea trials. The aircraft carrier arrived at its home base of Portsmouth last week.

A go-anywhere jet vac tanker designed for use by the military and United Nations relief teams is proving its worth helping keep sewers running smoothly across central and southern England.
The JHL recycling jet vac tanker is being used by Lanes Group plc to access remote sewers and culverts across the most difficult terrain on behalf of Thames Water.
Lanes, Thames Water’s wastewater network services maintenance partner, is using the specialist vehicle for more productive planned cleaning of main sewers and to respond rapidly to off-road blockages.
Michael Hall, Head of Operations for Lanes Utilities, said: “Our 8×8 jet vac tanker is the only vehicle of its kind operating in the UK, and it’s all-terrain capability is proving its worth time and again.
“We can quickly reach wastewater assets that are far from a road or firm ground. The vehicle is also ready to be deployed if there is a flood to maintain critical assets such as pumping stations.”
The vehicle has enhanced ground clearance plus eight-wheel drive and steering. It was originally designed to support wastewater management in remote military bases and humanitarian aid camps.
Two Lanes drainage engineers have now undergone specialist off-road training in the vehicle to support their work in some of the most remote and hard-to-reach locations across the Thames Water region.
The training has taught them how to make the best use of the jet vac tanker’s ability to cope with boggy and unstable ground and risk assess conditions to ensure all off-road hazards are fully considered.
In Long Hanborough, in Oxfordshire, the vehicle has been used to travel 1,000 metres across farm and construction land that had been churned up by excavators to carry out a large sewer clean.
Without the JHL 8×8, the project could only have been completed with a recycler jet vac tanker, two tracked portable jetting reels and the deployment of a confined space entry team.
Jet vac operative Chris Wood, who is the vehicle’s main driver, said: “This is an extraordinary piece it kit. It makes our off-road work much more productive and allows us to react more quickly to potential pollution incidents.
“Importantly, because I can drive right up to a manhole, wherever it is, and vacuum blockage material from the sewer, we don’t have to send in a confined space team which is a major safety boost.
“There hasn’t been a project yet where we haven’t felt confident that we can reach an off-road sewer. Even when we’ve been axle-deep in mud, it has kept on going.”
Off-road Training Specialist Mark Stopps, of Explore the Country, near Milton Keynes, who led the training, said: “The 8×8 jet vac is a very impressive piece of machinery.
“It has better off-road capabilities than many similar-sized military vehicles. Hats off, also, to Lanes for giving its drivers off-road training, it’s not something that many users of all-terrain vehicles think of doing.”
