so bloodstained rotn 2 is likely going to be announced this year. it should be something i'm really excited about, but conversely i have incredibly low expectations. because, over time, i've grown to lowkey hate rotn 1. here's why: i played the switch version first, which wasn't gonna help with my first impressions. but i've since played on pc with fixed framerate and better graphics? and it's still the ugliest castlevania i've ever played. i just wrote a long rant about 2d games being shoehorned into 3d, so i won't go back into that. but this game is such good proof of 2.5d consistently making 2d games worse. or that's the only sense i can make of one of the kings of beautiful 2d suddenly making one of the most hideous 2.5d games. i say that, but iga also made the 3d castlevania games on ps2. of all the problems with those games, the visuals weren't one of them. and then there's "dracula x chronicles", the 2.5d remake of rondo. even tho i was one of the many who mostly bought that game for the unlockable sotn and rondo PORTS (orig 2d rondo was much better), the remake wasn't horrible visually. the polygons and lighting didn't feel like clownvomit like it does in bs rotn. everything with rotn just feels amateur, low budget, and incompetent. the way enemies die by just fizzling out their polygons is so hideous. it feels like a budget mobile game from 2012. remember the weird occasional 3d that was in sotn? imagine an entire game made from that, but lacking any of the charm. to wrap it up in a bow, the graphics suck. but it isn't just the raw graphics, it's also the art direction. if i had one word to sum up the art, it'd be "uninspired". nothing feels like an artist made this, outside of a handful of moments. this is "paint by numbers castlevania" at it's worst. sure, games like cv cotm were a bit bland, and sometimes cv could feel somewhat formulaic? but rotn took mediocrity to a whole new level. do you like grey caves? do you like grey stone buildings? do you want your castlevania to look like the overworld in fallout 3? welcome to bloodstained ritual of the night! if i were avgn, i'd be like "bloodstained more like shitstained, everything looks like brown and grey ASS" idfk. maybe things would be better if they understood how to use lighting effects, but they don't so we'll never know. cover the already ugly visuals in shitoil and then... well my inner avgn has returned so i'll digress. the areas are all samey and boring, generally feeling like placeholders they never bothered to fix. the music sucks. it feels mostly generic and there's very little melody to be found in the tracks. it's hard to believe yamane had any involvement in this. except... when you go play bs curse of the moon, suddenly it makes sense. because there's melody hidden in the composition, but the execution is just bad. almost like the devs went to yamane and asked her to make things less melodic and more "atmospheric". idk what happened, maybe it was just rushed. but i've never known ANY castlevania to have unmemorable music. and yet rotn somehow pulls it off. i'm def biased, but a cv without good music isn't a castlevania at all.

the gameplay seems... fine? but it's just executed poorly. i've seen people complain about "sotn weapon variety plus aos ability variety is overwhelming", but actually that's one of the only things they did right. as i'm typing this hatepost, suddenly i'm finding myself "wanting to play" just to unlock all the fun abilities and gear. but no, then i remember how clumsy it all is. on top of that, the devs are morons and constantly added "balance patches", for a singleplayer game, that nerfed most of the fun things into the ground. finding broken or super powerful gear is part of what makes castlevania so fun, fuck these idiot bs devs. they don't understand why cv is good. not at all. before i forget, there's also way too much forced grinding and dumb sidemissions for basic unlocks. i don't need world of warcraft fetchquests in my castlevanias, sorry. lastly, there's kickstarter. i hate what kickstarter does to games. don't get me wrong, undertale was a kickstarter game, and that's one of the best games ever made. but undertale somehow finished development and met all its kickstarter goals in a bit over 2 years. even though it was developed by just one dude and an artist. undertale released in a finished form, too. bs, on the flipside, had a whole development studio, a fucking publisher, AND a whole lot more money (set crowdfunding records iiirc). but it only just recently finished delivering on it's development promises. that's like 10 years. and the promises were often barely fulfilled, like there are compromises everywhere. you have ks games like shovelknight, which take forever to finish releasing content (but all the content is really good, and feels like a full game at launch). then you have ks games like shenmue 3, which release "finished" but looks and feels like shit. bs rotn is the worst of both worlds. when i played bloodstained at launch, that was it's one chance. sorry, but if i go to a restaurant for the first time and the food is bland and the experience is bad? i'm not gonna go back. i have replayed every castlevania, even ones like cv cotm that i wasn't huge on. i have not replayed bs rotn and i don't see that changing any time soon. i tried somewhat recently, with most of the new content? still felt shit. lost interest in under an hour (and that was with the blodless content which was comparatively good).

adding on to the disaster which is bloodstained, we then have the "8bit game" goal. which resulted in bs cotm. which is, bizarrely, absolutely incredible. it's like a spiritual successor to akumajou densetsu (the good version of cv3). unlike rotn, almost every song is awesome and memorable. the gameplay is great. the areas are rad as fuck. it's legit amazing and the only truly good thing to come out of the whole series. cotm 2 isn't as good, but it still feels like magic compared to rotn. and guess what? both are 2d. can you believe it? iga makes a 2d game and it's incredible, right after making a 2.5d game that was dogshit. maybe he shouldn't fuck with 3d anymore? will he get a clue? probably not. it's frustrating to see one of my heroes of game development going in such a dumb direction. sorta reminding me of how aonuma "doesn't understand why people want pre-botw zelda elements back". or miyazaki "doesn't know why elden ring was so successful" and turns around and regresses the fuck out of the gameplay with the miserable tryhard dlc. i complain about zelda and elden, but i would still rather play totk or elden 100x over bloodstained rotn. even though iga seems to be remaining more "faithful" to his genre, his execution is somehow worse. in my heart, whether it's logical or not, i blame kickstarter. to me, bs rotn was a ks scam game. a soulless imitation of cv sotn, that held less value than a low effort fanmod of a real castlevania. and i TRIED to like it. i put up a lot of money for it's kickstarter, and was an apologist of all it's bullshit for years. but i can't do it anymore. it's a bad castlevania. maybe the worst. so am i excited for rotn 2? not really. there's a faint glimmer of hope knowing it won't be another kickstarter game, and that they're using all the money they made from the first one to make it (prob a significant sum, they certainly weren't using their profit to fix the orig game, the new content is budget/slow as hell). and they're gonna try and fix the art direction, which "couldn't get any worse" except they plan to make it more realistic "like final fantasy 7 remake". why? ok rant over. bs cotm sucked. i hope cotm 2 won't suck so bad. but i'm not holding my breath.

Cheeto is an egg in a rolplay based QSMP au called ROTNE (rise of the new eggs) run by yours truly. She uses She/They, and was found in an amethyst geode by quackity, who was her caretaker before bad reposessed her along with some furniture.

She is one of Badboyhalos eggs, along with Dapper ofc, Epal, Hyun, Eve, and Cheeze. The family is nicknamed the "angst fam" by the other au members. Here's a family portrait:

Cheetos best freind (/possible crush 👀) is another egg named Olive. (Played by @nuggiebee btw) Their duo name is nameduo, because they both have former names they don't go by anymore.

They used to have a treehouse but it was destroyed in a fire. They spend nearly every waking moment together, and have had many sleepovers.

Cheeto, being one of bads kids, is freinds with the goasts in bads chat. One goast, named bread, has taken a specific liking to her. It rides around on her beret and refuses to raid other players or hang out with anyone else. The only times these two can be found apart is when bad is live.

Cheeto has a condition called shard skin (an original magical disease by me) that causes shards of a certain crystal or gem (amethyst in cheetos case) to form on the individuals body like a shield. It can form due to physical or emotional trauma. Unfortunately, most physical trauma severe enough to cause it is too far gone go be survived. So that leaves emotional trauma, witch cheets has gone through alot of. The affected areas are unable to feel anything physical, and the more shard skin an individual has, the less strong their emotions are. Sorry just wanted to info dump ab shard skin.

Ok, time for my crackpot theories on Bloodstained Ritual of the Night given what we learned in Bloodstained Curse of the Moon 2. Before the cutoff for spoiler reasons, two notes:

Yes, there’s probably a million reddit threads about this now, reddit can burn.

Yes, I know RotN is not connected to the CotM games except having the same characters. Heck, the CotM games are barely connected. but this does deal with a surprising connection they do have.

More below the break beware lotsa spoilers for all three Bloodstained games.

I didn’t realize how much I’d ramble, there’s a tl;dr at the end.

So first of, if you came in here not knowing what’s what but don’t mind spoilers, let me talk about the RotN big twist real quick.

The shop keeper, Dominique, an exorcist from “the Church” turns out to be the true villain all along, working alongside Gremory, a moon goddess, in manipulating Gebel into summoning the hell castle that the game takes place in to lure in Miriam to use her pure crystal to summon Bael, the most powerful of the demons according to the game.

So, naturally when Dominique was revealed as a playable character the like ten seconds of speculation time we were given before the game was already released had folks wondering what in blazes could be leading her to be one of the good guys? My argument now is, what in blazes let to her becoming one of the bad guys in RotN actually.

In that game she says the calamity ten years before the game, where the Alchemy Guild massacred their shardbinder creations in a blood sacrifice to summon an army of demons to terrorize the English landscape because money, let to her realizing that God is a douche who doesn’t give a fuck and wanted to gain the power to slay God. Along the way she clearly just became straight up psychopathic because her initial goal, rooted in empathy for the people who died, has become lost, as now she doesn’t care how many people she will murder. I mean it would help put a dent in imperialism a little, but still.

That does feel quite drastic for a woman of the cloth, but I mean, it’s not impossible, it could literally just be that.

But let’s talk about something both CotM and RotN have in common besides bosses and characters. Specifically the concept of the true final boss of the “ally” route.

After beating Normal mode in CotM you unlock Nightmare mode where you play as Miriam, Alfred, and Gebel trying to free Zangetsu from the demonic powers that have taken a hold of him after saving them from some ominous sphere of darkness Gremory, the game’s final boss here, threw at them. This mode has a different final stage with a boss fight against Demon Lord Zangetsu instead of Gremory. Meanwhile, at the end of Zangetsu mode in RotN, the final bossfight is against Miriam, the big good girl of the game, who spend the entire game helping everybody, having succumbed to demonic forces herself, and Zangetsu has to stop her. The bad end of RotN does have Gremory take control of Miriam, but we don’t have a moon to slice in this battle like Gebel’s battle had. So it probably wasn’t Gremory taking control here. It could have been just the shard corruption having reached critical mass (Demons appear to be crystalline in nature and Shardbinders like Miriam and Gebel can absorb these crystals to gain powers, but are slowly turned fully crystalline themselves over time.)

So let’s shift gears real quick and talk about Dominique again... specifically her appearance in CotM2. She is met with distrust by... well, two of her partners, Zangetsu, and Robert both aren’t too fond of her. But Zangetsu quickly turns around. Robert never does learn to trust her in Episode 1. His biggest regret. ‘Cause she kinda sacrifices herself to save them from a big ball of darkness like Zangetsu did at the end of Normal mode in the first game.

Episode 2 and EX are both about saving her from that corruption. We later (in the Final episode) learn that Dominique actually *is* a schemer and she did *intend* to be corrupted by that demon, Mephisto, because her family had been trying to kill that big boy for a long while now, but a demon can only be killed if it takes physical form, so she let him posses her so that Zangetsu and his demon slayer sword could finish the job. She was ready to die to get this one demon killed. She was at her own breaking point in this battle and saw no way out and no reason to go on if she could just take this fucker with her.

...Except travelling with Zangetsu and Robert and Hachi forged bonds between them and her, and she realized she wanted to live after all. Zangetsu eventually gains the means to cut both of them down without harming Dominique, using a sword that only harms demons, the Zanmatou.

So yeah, here we have a woman who is selfless to a fault, and loves deeply (no, not talking about ships here) who... becomes an omnicidal maniac later on? Feels off. And we do see her, Miriam, and Zangetsu, all possessed at some point. So it clearly is a theme in Bloodstained.

So, let me touch on Mephisto real quick.He is the final boss of both Episode 2 and Episode EX in CotM2. And *this* is what he looks like.

Those of you who played even a brief moment of Ritual of the Night probably are doing a double take right now. Because yeah... the final boss is the RotN save room.

Mephisto, the demon Dominique’s family has sworn to slay is... always there on our adventure to slay... Dominique? Again, CotM and RotN do not share a timeline, so on one hand what happens in one doesn’t have to have happened in the other... but they still share a core universe... same characters are generally portrayed the same (for as little portraying as we get in CotM)

So here’s my theory regarding Dominique, and also Miriam and Zangetsu mode: Both were possessed by Mephisto, first Dominique while she was probably throwing herself headlong into her battle with Mephisto in her grief, defeated him, but not in a way that matters, got possessed, and her thoughts of vengeance against God which I’ve no doubt she actually harbored, were amblified a lot, and she used her natural scheming abilities to bring about this, rather than the demise of Mephisto like in CotM2. Once Miriam defeated her, Mephisto, also playing the long game, having been there, watching Miriam this whole time, possibly injectin a little of his essence each time she visited his room (the orange orbs in the save room pic enter Miriam if she saves).

Mephisto does not appear to be a well known entity in the Bloodstained universe, Zangetsu, a demonslayer by profession had to be told about him, and Miriam was probably even less likely to know... or, if she did know through the Alchemy guilt, might have just written off this statue of Mephisto appearing everywhere, even the galleon they approached the demon castle (dracula) on as just that... a statue. A curious quirk in the space time continuum that she keeps seeing here and there, no doubt brought on by the crystal in her body.

Miriam, is referred to as the blue rose and uses weapons with that name. And Mephisto appears to have a giant blue crystal rose for his chest, so Miriam may well have been marked by Mephisto as the one he wants to inhabit to reign terror upon the world.

Dominique does have dark red crystals admittedly, and she may not have been a shardbinder until after we started our adventure in RotN. So one alternative is that Dominique wasn’t possessed. Mephisto did take her into his body after all in CotM2. But she could have been mind controlled instead. Gebel spends the entire game under Gremory’s mind control and while that control wasn’t perfect, Mephisto could simply be better at it than Gremory... or Mephisto just had a hold on her so long that by now Dominique is just too far gone.

Bloodstained’s universe is... mucky, but intentionally so, it seems. There’s no telling how much the games settings *actually* share. but this seems feasible to me, considering that the series so far seems to be 11 or so different timelines smashed together. Not one ending of CotM leads up to CotM2, even though the plot premise does lead up to it. RotN is like a reboot to CotM entirely. I know IGA wanted to get away from the rigid timeline of the Castlevania series with this, so he now just does whatever he wants it seems. To quote my adaption of a Mahoutsukai Precure meme for Hugtto Precure.

It’s time travel, I ain’t gotta explain shit.

So who knows if I am right. But I like the idea.

tl;dr: I think Dominique and Miriam in RotN were controlled or possessed by Mephisto from CotM2, because that boss is literally the save room from RotN

the warm light from your apartment filters out onto the dark street, a black cat slinking off to hide behind a trash bin. the sight causes a shiver to go down your spine, the heavy feeling of dread weighing down on your back. kei's abrupt change in behavior over text had startled you more than you'd like to admit. you both had been finding solace in each other nearly every night for the past two weeks. you couldn't count how many times you'd felt the tug on your heart to his room late at night, knocking softly and hoping he'd be awake. he usually was, opening the door with a roll of his eyes but you weren't oblivious to the small smile that played on his lips and the light blush that dusted his cheeks as he pulled you into the room and onto his dino decorated covers. the gesture was so soft and sweet and so unlike him that it would send butterflies to your stomach and heat to your face. the nights where you couldn't sleep beside him were filled with tossing and turning, overthinking, and a horrible headache that was nearly impossible to get rid of. kei didn't seem any better off than you, his dark circles a stark contrast against his pale skin the next morning. you'd both chug huge cups of coffee and joke about needing to sleep together more often but there was always a looming feeling that what you were saying wasn't a joke. at least so you hoped.

you shake off these thoughts, their presence only furthering your anxiety at what was awaiting you upstairs. the flight up seems longer than normal and by the time you reach your door, a pool of dread sits heavy in your gut. you fumble with your keys, attempting to get them in the door before swinging it open widely, toeing your shoes off onto the rack, and setting the bag of food from dinner on the kitchen counter. you can hear kei tinkering around somewhere in the apartment and your heart sinks. the containers of food are now cold in your hands as you unwrap one of them and set it in the microwave. the steady hum from the machine does little to soothe your rapidly beating heart, a hand finding its way onto your chest as if squeezing the area will cause the pain to stop.

"hell's the matter with you?" kei's baritone voice startles you out of your thoughts and you jump, heart beating so fast it feels as though it'll leap right out your chest. the microwave beeps and you turn to remove it, setting it in front of your roommate who has made himself comfortable on the counter across from you. he nods his thanks and begins eating, his nonchalant demeanor calming you down very little. you watch him for a moment but the question that has been on your mind since you'd gotten home claws its way out of your throat before you can stop it.

"where's hina?" you ask with false confidence, your eyes tracking his every move for a reaction. kei tenses for a half a second before shrugging, taking another bite out of a potato. "gone." he mumbles, golden eyes finally meeting yours. the apprehension in them doesn't go unnoticed so you continue to press. "how was studying?" you break eye contact, choosing instead to stare down at the marble countertops under your fingertips. a few moments go by without a response so you chance another look at him. his shoulders are slumped and his eyes are boring into his half empty container. if you could see his eyes at that moment, you would be shocked and confused to see tears welling up in the corners beneath his glasses. unfortunately, you don't get to see that uncharacteristic vulnerability being too occupied with waiting for a response, though the response you recieve is not at all what you were expecting.

"yn, what are we doing?" his voice breaks on the last word and your head shoots up to look at him. his glasses are clenched in his left hand, his right gripping the counter underneath him. his eyes refuse to meet yours but when you go to speak, he immediately interrupts. "i mean, we cuddle nearly every night, you tell me you love me, god, and i even say it back!" it's like a dam has been broken and he can't stop talking, tears that were once sitting on his lashline now flooding over his eyes and down his cheeks. with the golden light of the kitchen casting a glow over his tear-stained face, kei looks absolutely breathtaking but somehow you conclude this isn't the best time to tell him that. he keeps talking, his voice now raising in volume and you instinctively start moving towards him. "b-but you just came from a date more expensive than this apartment and i spent time here, alone with a girl that isn't you-" (your heart flutters at that statement) "-and now you're trying to make small talk with me? what are we doing?" at the sound of the question repeated, he finally looks up at you and your breath catches in your throat. he looks utterly broken and you can't keep your hands from going up to caress his cheeks, thumbs moving to wipe away his tears. kei unconciously leans into your touch, the gesture causing tears to well up in your own eyes.

"i like you kei. a lot." your voice comes out barely above a whisper but you can tell he heard you by the way his eyes widen and his head jerking out of your grasp. a pang of pain hits your chest at his rejection but you keep it together, hoping he's just in shock at your words. a moment passes and he continues to stare at you as if he's in awe of your very presence before you. in order to snap him out of whatever daze he's in, you tentatively place a hand on his shoulder and repeat your words again. "i like you." his eyes flutter shut as he lets your words envelop him like a warm hug, almost as if he's trying to memorize how they feel wrapped around him. when his eyes finally open, instead of being met with joy and maybe a hint of desire, his eyes are cold as they stare back at you.

he stands, pushing his way past you and to the door. your face twists up in confusion and you follow close behind him. maybe he's still in shock, you try to reason with yourself but you know deep down that this is a rejection. still, you say the phrase again, "kei, i like you." that proves to be a mistake because he turns towards you quickly with fury and tears behind his glasses. "no you don't." his words slap you in the face and you stumble back, the tears in your eyes finally kissing the cool air of the apartment. you try to speak again but it only takes kei two short strides to reach you and roughly grab your jaw to prevent you from talking.

"you don't like me and you never have. i'm a horrible, disgusting person who you could never truly care about." you go to shake your head no but his grip just tightens. "do you know who i am? do you even know what i've done? if you did, you never would have fallen for me." with that he releases your face and moves towards the door, slipping on a coat and his shoes. his hand is on the door handle when you finally find your voice.

"this had to have meant something to you, right?" of all the things you could've said, you knew this was the wrong one but you just needed to know he felt something, anything at all, that what you two had been through was real. a scoff causes you to look back up, kei's eyes piercing yours though the shine in his eyes tells you he isn't entirely unaffected. he tilts his chin up, looking down on you as though you were nothing, a condescending smirk speading across his face. if you had known him during highschool, you would realize that the look he's wearing is suspiciously close to the one he used to wear back then; cruel, yes, but even worse, he looked apathetic. like you crying was unwarranted and annoying. his mouth opens and you can hardly hear him due to the blood rushing in your ears but his words cause your knees to buckle and you hit the floor with a bang.

"no. it didn't." with that he's gone, taking your breath, your hope, and your happiness with him. you remain frozen on the ground for who knows how long but when you finally find it in yourself to move, you grab your phone and text the first person in your contacts before collapsing.

the sound of the curtain in your room moving startles you awake. you rub your eyes, expecting that when you open them, you’ll be greeted with the sight of happy-go-lucky bokuto and kind eyed akaashi but instead, you’re cursed with the sight of the woman who had been haunting you for the past few weeks.

“ah, yn, i didn’t think you’d be awake!” momo tittered, her happy, almost childish tone seeming entirely out of place. you push yourself up on the bed, your heart beating wildly out of your chest. what was momo, a bitter, scorned woman capable of? you go to grab your phone but momo’s hand shoots out to stop you.

“i don’t think so! can’t have you calling anyone up here until i’ve said my piece.” if anyone else had seen the smile she shot at you, you’re almost positive that she would have been arrested on the spot. your arm falls lax in her hold and once she’s positive you won’t fight, she drops it, turning instead into the window.

“he thinks he loves you, you know. after everything i did for him, he thinks he loves you.” she laughs bitterly, continuing to gaze out the window. “we grew up together, you know? i know everything there is to know about him.” at that statement, her tone grows angrier, almost predatory. you can’t help but flinch under her gaze as she stalks over to your bed, looming over you.

“you think he really wants you? you’re just a phase, someone who he’s temporarily infatuated with. i am a constant. no matter what you do, no matter where you go, i will be there.” she sneers, getting closer to your face. “he listens to me. i can say anything i want about you and he’ll believe me. kenma and i are destiny. get that through your thick fucking skull.” to almost punctuate her point, she pokes at the gauze on your forehead where you had hit it when you fainted. when you move your head away from her hand she giggles and stands tall, gazing down on you as though you were the scum of the earth, the dirt under her feet.

“leave kenma alone. he doesn’t truly want you.” momo walks towards the curtain before pausing and turning back towards you. “have a quick recovery!” at that she blows you a kiss and struts out the door, leaving you shaking and frozen.

you remain still until tsukishima comes back from the cafeteria, coffee cup and phone in hand. “oi, yn, you want cheese pizza or something else?” when you don’t respond, he looks up from his phone to see silent tears streaming down your face. he immediately puts down his phone and coffee cup and collects you in his arms.

“yn, what happened?” tsukishima asks, gently rubbing circles into your back. it takes you a moment but you finally get the entire story out, tsukki’s arms tightening around you as you get to the assault bit of the story. once you’re done recounting the horrible events, you’re exhausted, drifting off to sleep, not noticing tsukishima picking up his phone and messaging someone before wrapping his arms around you again and soothing you into a deep slumber.
