Anyways :)
if you've already joined iNaturalist, want to do me and all other Queer people, nonbinary people in particular, a favor?
On May 30th, (2023, in case someone finds this in the future for some reason) when this thread - LGBTQIA+ and iNaturalist - is unlocked on the forums, leave a comment about what you think of the staff's reaction to someone purposefully misgendering me. Or just leave some messages in support of trans and nonbinary people. Or just say that misgendering is always wrong. Whatever the heck you want.
You can read it all there on the thread for yourself. Here's a link that skips to where the misgendering starts.
Me and at least one other trans person involved have both sent private messages to the staff of iNaturalist and left feedback with the parent company about the staff of iNaturalist not following their supposed mission of inclusive and respect.
The three moderaters who interacted with this incident all chose to either actively side with the transmisics that were misgendering me, or with the one trans mod, are "playing the center", claiming that the responses to the bigotry (and I literally cannot stress enough how exceedingly civil our response were) are over the top and aggressive and "name calling" (because apparently, saying someone is being a bigot is name calling, now!)
Pride month is less than a week away, and iNaturalist is supposed to be welcoming to everyone.
So if you've already got an account (I don't want people making accounts just to comment for this), please do me and all other trans people on iNaturalist a favor and come out of the woodwork to support trans people's rights to not be purposefully misgendered.
Show the staff that if they're gonna claim to support Queer people and change the icon to be a rainbow for Pride month, then they need to actually do the bare minimum required to respect trans people.
Anyways I'm making a shit ton of memes to post as soon as the thread's unlocked, so you can look forward to seeing those, assuming the staff don't just straight up ban me for *checks notes* not wanting to be purposefully misgendered on a thread that's Literally For Queer People™. Lol.
We're already demanding an official apology. But it would be really nice if more people could show up to leave their support and help drown out the bigotry.
Update: They have now banned me from the forum for asking not to be misgenderd, and have hidden my posts asking not to be misgenered by claiming they're hateful and inappropriate, while...literally still leaving up the posts that are misgendering me!

@crescent-oreo-icecream
I just noticed this now going through the iNaturalist tag, sorry, lol.
hmmm
I’ll unfollow you on there and then I’ll see where the follow button is for you!
Here’s a link to my page (it’s set as my actual name because I’m trying to get my mom to join it so she and her husband will keep track of all the random cool stuff they keep finding, and I don’t want her to know my actual usernames lol)
-
Okay so for me on the website, the follow button pops up next to your username and the message button.
Let me check on the app quick since I’m not sure which one you’re using / and if anyone else has this problem (I definitely recommend the actual website if possible, it’s awesome, and the app is also nice, but it can be slow)
hmmmmm
actually I cannot figure out how to follow people on the app. But I’ll send you a message, and maybe that will give you the option?
i can't follow rjalker😔

I just updated the photos for Luffa from this unhelpfulness
Tumblr media
to this. Which actually demonstrates the differences between the species instead of showing you generic yellow flowers that no one who's not an expert will be able to tell apart.
Tumblr media
for some reason it's only showing the updated images when I uncheck "verifiable" observations, which is weird.
Also updated the picture for the genus itself

all the trans people and our allies on the thread @ the 2 bigots and the iNaturalist staff right now:

Tumblr media
[ID: a four-panel version of the spongebob meme with manta man arguing about patrick about his wallet. manta man is labelled "Me", with white text underneath on a black background, and patrick star is labeled "Observer", with yellow text underneath on the same black background.
in the first panel, manta man ("Me") says, "Hi! Do you know if this tree was planted?"
in the second panel, patrick (Observer) says, "Oh, yeah, definitely."
in the third panel, manta man ("Me") says, "Okay, thanks! Since this was purposefully planted, I will mark it as captive/cultivated so we can tell it apart from ones that are growing without intervention. This species is not native and is invasive in this area, so it's important that planted trees be marked accordingly, so that the ones that have escaped cultivation and are becoming invasive can be tracked accurately.
"As iNaturalist's guidelines state, any plant that was planted by people less than 150 years ago is considered captive/cultivated and should be marked as such, even if it's not actively being cared for by people such as being pruned or mulched.
"Since this was planted, it's considered captive/cultivated."
in the fourth and final panel, patrick (Observer) says, "It's not captive/cultivated though." there is a large black space underneath Observer's reply because it is much shorter than OP's explanation. manta man looks frustrated. end ID]

Multiple trans people and allies: Yeah, misgendering is not okay, posts that misgender users need to be removed. These two specific posts, in which a cis person is purposefully misgendering another user, need to be removed. This isn't acceptable behavior and clearly violates community guidelines about respecting other people.
The iNAturalist staff: Oh MY GOD!!! YOu want us to police every single post anyone ever makes?!?!!?! You want us to literally approve every single post anyone ever makes?!?!?!!??! Don't you know something isn't hate speech or insulting if the person saying it says they're saying it out of respect?!?!!?!?
I am archiving this fucking thread as it goes.
Update 5/31/23, literally the day before Pride month starts: They just banned me from the forums for asking not to be misgendered, and hid my posts where I ask the person misgendering me to stop.
While they actively refuse to remove the two posts where someone is purposefully and knowingly misgendering me.

someone messaged me for help identifying the most hilarious persimmon I've ever seen in my life. Oh my gods. Bugs ate just the very edges of almost every leaf so it looks, at a glance, like it should be a chestnut. It is so funny.

Me: ha. I'm gonna take a picture of these white beggarticks that don't have flowers yet so more people new to identifying them will have an example of just the leaves!!!!!
the people who regularly identify white beggarticks besides me: *nowhere to be seen*
uhhhhhhhhhhh do we call this a successful failure then???

someone doesn't understand the purpose of data collection.
Why do you feel you need to document this sighting through a drawing. Clearly there is a lot of evidence of raccoons in your area? Does one dead raccoon really need to be documented or do you have to document everything you see even if you didn’t get a photo?

Please look at this delightful plant. these aren't even all the possible colors. It's beautiful. It's native. pollinators love it. Look at all the colors it can be from individual to individual.

some of the numbers may be incorrect because I have dyslexia lol.
This graph shows all the observations that have been identified as some sort of Luffa on iNaturalist so far, but you can also narrow it to show only for certain locations.

Like seven different people have either defended me against the blatant misgendering or otherwise sent me nice messages asking what language I'm okay with them using in reference to me.
and then meanwhile the iNat Staff are just like *tone policing* *treating defending against bigotry as more offensive than the actual bigotry* *punishes all the Queer people rather than remove two (2) bigoted posts*
okay you fucking cowards.
Update 5/31/23, literally the day before Pride month starts: They just banned me from the forums for asking not to be misgendered, and hid my posts where I ask the person misgendering me to stop.

diospyros virginiana plant pheonology graph at 10:10PM (EST) November 27th 2023. Done for today because I want to write.
I'm going month by month now instead of just chronological order, on April right now.
There are 25,061 observations of American persimmons on iNaturalist so far, including captive ones, which count towards the graph.
