Spatial and Temporal Variation of Dissolved Trace Metals from Mexican Caribbean Coast
Authored by: D C Escobedo Urias
Abstract
The concentrations of dissolved trace metals (Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd, Sr, V, As) were analyzed in 56 water samples from the intertidal zone of the Mexican Caribbean coast during 2019 and 2020. The higher concentrations of dissolved metals (especially Pb, Ni, Cd) in 2019, suggest the influence of anthropogenic inputs mainly related to an intense development of tourism in the region. In 2020, higher variability was observed in the distribution pattern of metals related to the reduction in tourism activity due to the COVID 19 pandemic and the simultaneous enrichment effect from the runoff during the rainy episodes. The generation of anoxic regions in some beaches due to the great accumulation of Sargassum influences the mechanisms of mobilization/enrichment of dissolved metals (especially Ni, Cd). The concentrations of metals showed an increase of two (Ni) to ten times (Pb and As) in the coastal region, which suggests the urgent need for continuous monitoring that supports an adequate management program of the Mexican Caribbean coast.
Keywords: Dissolved trace metals; Tourist beaches; Quintana Roo; Caribbean Sea
Introduction
Beaches are especially tourist dominated regions which is highly dynamic in nature and have different complex system where it often interacts with both land and coastal region. The dynamic beaches often play a major role and act as a bridge between terrestrial and the open marine systems [1,2]. Trace metals often enter to the coastal environment in an array of sources which includes industrial effluents, rainfall runoff, harbor activities, river inputs, tourist activities, land drainage, atmospheric deposition etc. [3]. The continuous anthropogenic pressure of the coastal zone causes various adverse effects such as decrease in water quality and alterations in ecosystem integrity, among others, for which various strategies are carried out to maintain its ecosystem services [4-6].
Riviera Maya is a well-known tourist beaches in Mexico forms part of the “Blue Flag Beaches: Vision 2030” project, which is presently on carried out in some countries around the world. The study aims to create a baseline database in different tourist beaches around the world in the coming decade. Water and sediment of several tourist beaches have already been evaluated for in South Africa (Richards Bay, South Durban, Sodwana Bay & St. Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal Province), India (Chennai Metropolitan City), Miri City, Malaysia, Department of Chocó, Colombia and Acapulco, Santa Rosalia, Loreto, and Huatulco in Mexico [7-17].
The main objective of the present study is to identify the dissolved metal concentrations and the inter elemental relationships in beaches of Cancun-Tulum corridor in the Caribbean Sea region of Mexico. The present results also serve as a first-hand report on dissolved metal concentrations in most important tourists’ region of Quintana Roo in order to understand the sources of contamination and contribute to evolve an adequate coastal management strategy.
Study Area
The study was done during May 2019 and August 2020 to document the concentration pattern of dissolved metals in the tourist beaches in the Mexican Caribbean Sea. The sampling periods of this study were realized during dry season in 2019 and rainy season in 2020 along with the social confinement due to COVID 19 pandemic. It is important to describe an existing nature pressure by the massive arrival of Sargassum which was observed in both years.
Cancun is the highest destination visited by foreign and national’s tourist in Mexico (almost 6.15 million visitors in 2019) with an increasing trend during the last five years. Nearly twenty coastal destinations have been certified as “Blue Flag” beaches (beaches with quality standards assigned by Foundation of Environmental Education [FEE]), and this high-quality standard attracted huge tourist arrivals during the past three decades. However, the region has been severely affected by the arrival of Sargassum species since 2014, a phenomenon that has seriously affected the coastal region of the Mexican Caribbean. During 2019 and 2020 about 38,892 T and 19,054 T respectively were accumulated in this area [18], and this problem is temporarily solved daily for the elimination of Sargassum through manual and mechanical by private and governmental agencies.
The local climate in the region is tropical, where from May to September it is marked as humid and from October to April as dry seasons. The local geology mainly indicates that the Caribbean coast is a carbonate platform composed mainly of limestones, dolomites and evaporites [19]. The Pleistocene limestone and marginal area consist of coral platforms and reefs. In some sites, the karst topographic features with fractures and cave networks (“Cenotes”) that extend up to 12 km inland, frequently have a groundwater discharge to the coast [20-21].
Sampling & Analytical Procedure
The study area is divided into four zones namely: Zone 1 (Z1 - Cancun: samples 1-13); Zone 2 (Z2 - Playa del Carmen: 14 – 31); Zone 3 (Z3 - Tulum: 32 – 42) and Zone 4 (Z4 - Cozumel Island: 43 – 56). The samples were collected in the intertidal region of selected tourist beaches which is occupied by luxurious resorts/ hotels certified as “Blue Flag” beaches and some public beaches (Figure 1). Field parameters pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen was done directly using the multiparameter Hannah instrument (Model No. HI 9828-25) and the calibration was done using known calibration standards. Samples were collected for dissolved trace metals (1L) in pre-cleaned polyethylene bottles, which was subsequently acidified using high purity HNO3 to a pH of 2 and stored in refrigeration until analysis. Dissolved trace metals Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd, Sr, V, As and major elements (Ca and Mg) were determined in IPN – CIIEMAD, Mexico using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (Perkin Elmer Model Analyst 100) following the methods [22,23]. Estimation of as was done using cold vapor technique with hydride generation was utilized. Additionally, known sample solutions were added to all samples to know the recovery percentage of the dissolved metals in seawater. Certified reference material (CRM) (WatRTM Pollution trace metal Lote: P213-500) was used after every 10th sample during the analysis and lanthanum oxides were added to each sample to avoid spectral and non-spectral interferences. The overall precision in the present analysis of dissolved trace metals varied from 93.18 to 107.43% for the analyzed metals.
Calculating water quality index & Statistics
Determination of water quality in terms of metal concentration was done using the Heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) [24] using the formula:
Where Hc is the monitored value of the ith parameter and Hmac is the maximum allowable concentration of the ith parameter The HEI values are classified into three categories: HEI ˂ 400 (Less contamination); 400 – 800 (Medium contamination) and ˃ 800 (High contamination) respectively. Spearman correlation analysis (R-mode) was done for each zone separately using STATISTICA (version 12.0) to analyze the geochemical relationship of dissolved trace metals in the region.
Results and Discussion
Major elements and environmental variables
The results of pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen showed a similar trend in both monitoring seasons, with a clear influence of the rainy season on conductivity in 2020 (Figure 2a-c). The concentrations and distribution of pH in the region during both years did not indicate any important change, and the lowest values observed in Playa del Carmen (Z2) and Tulum (Z3) are directly related to groundwater discharges through the region which was corroborated by the high association with the other environmental variables mainly during 2019, in addition to the zonal advection and the changes in the surface wind force [25,26]. The conductivity of both years showed a significant variation (2019: Z4 ˃ Z1 ˃ Z2 ˃ Z3; 2020: Z1 ˃ Z2 ˃ Z4 ˃ Z3) with average values of 54.57 and 40.2 mS cm-1 in 2019 and 2020 respectively. The relationship between the environmental variables pH and conductivity did not show significance between them except for the Playa del Carmen region in both years, and the abrupt changes in the conductivity values during both seasons together with the observed values, suggest the control of oxygen in water over the redox potential of seawater [27]. The three-fold increase in conductivity values in 2020 than 2019 infers that rainfall episodic events are all specific features of shallow coastline and freshwater discharge influencing this parameter [28,29].
Dissolved oxygen indicates a variation from 3.91 to 10.51 mg L-1 in 2019 (avg. 7.79) and 2.72 to 9.82 mg L-1 in 2020 (avg. 6.94). Zone wise calculated values indicates that Z2 ˃ Z3 ˃ Z1 ˃ Z4 respectively. The low distribution of DO is directly related to the organic matter degradation/ remineralization in the coastal region as well the terrestrial ground water which is recirculated in sea water [30]. Moreover, the low-oxygen ground water discharges due to the karst topography features present in the region will directly contribute to low oxygen level diluting the DO in coastal bottom waters [31]. The very low value (< 5 mg L-1) in Z2, Z3 is characterized by intermittent discharge of effluents/runoff and moreover heavy presence of the degrading Sargassum species in the coastal regions especially in low tidal areas [32,33].
The distribution of Ca and Mg were similar in both seasons (Figure 2d-e), and their concentrations in 2019 (averages Ca: 346 mg L-1, Mg: 761 mg L-1) and 2020 (average Ca: 400 mg L-1 and Mg: 771 mg L-1) indicate a geogenic origin associated with the dissolution of the carbonate mineral (calcite and magnesite), which is the predominant rural rock in this region and reaches the coast through of groundwater enriched by treated or untreated wastewater [34]. The slightly higher average of Ca observed in 2020 was associated with a higher entry of groundwater and surface water from the runoff during the rainy season and that enriched the coast despite the decrease in the contributions of tourist activity because of the pandemic. Additionally, the large amount of organic matter contributed by Sargassum in both seasons, facilitated the dissolution of these minerals on the coast [35-37].
Dissolved trace metal concentrations (Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb, Zn, Cd, Sr, V, As)
The concentration pattern of dissolved trace metals in seawater in the present study is in the following descending order (based on zonal avg.): 2019 Zone 1: Sr ˃ Pb ˃ Ni ˃ Co ˃ Fe ˃ Zn ˃ Cu ˃ V ˃ Cd ˃ Mn ˃ Cr ˃ As; Zone 2: Sr ˃ Pb ˃ Ni ˃ Co ˃ Fe ˃ Zn ˃ Cu ˃ Cd ˃ V ˃ Mn ˃ Cr ˃ As; Zone 3: Pb ˃ Sr ˃ Ni ˃ Co ˃ Fe ˃ Zn ˃ Cu ˃ Cd ˃ Mn ˃ Cr ˃ V and Zone 4: Pb ˃ Ni ˃ Co ˃ Sr ˃ Fe ˃ Cu ˃ Zn ˃ Cd ˃ Mn ˃ Cr ˃ V. Likewise, during 2020 in Zone 1: Sr ˃ Pb ˃ As ˃ Cu ˃ Fe ˃ Ni ˃ Zn ˃ Cd ˃ V ˃ Mn ˃ Co ˃ Cr; Zone 2: Sr ˃ Pb ˃ As ˃ Cu ˃ Fe ˃ Ni ˃ Zn ˃ Co ˃ Cd ˃ V ˃ Mn ˃ Cr; Zone 3: Sr ˃ Pb ˃ Cu ˃ As ˃ Zn Fe ˃ Ni ˃ Mn ˃ Co ˃ Cd ˃ V ˃ Mn ˃ Cr; Zone 3: Sr ˃ Pb ˃ Cu ˃ As ˃ Zn ˃ Fe ˃ Ni ˃ Mn ˃ Co ˃ Cd ˃ V ˃ Cr and Zone 4: Sr ˃ Ni ˃ Pb ˃ Cu ˃ Zn ˃ As ˃ Fe ˃ Co ˃ V ˃ Cd ˃ Mn ˃ Cr respectively (Figures 3,4).
The concentration pattern of dissolved Sr in the region is high compared to other metals, indicating that they are strongly influenced by variations in composition based on the rocks of the continental bed [38]. The high concentrations of Sr in Z1 and Z2 in both periods (1.980 – 16.610 μg L-1) suggest dissolution of the young carbonate rocks, where complex geochemical interactions are generated from the evaporites. This is also supported by the variable mix of groundwater, where carbonates from the oldest Cretaceous or Cenozoic (Cancun and Puerto Morelos) dissolve to release Sr, and in the presence of fracture zone (near Tulum) and sinks closer to the coastal section where entry of submarine groundwater has already been reported [39,40].
Fe and Mn concentrations during 2019 showed a similar distribution pattern and values in all zones (Fe ranges: 0.95- 3.64 mg L-1, Mn: 51-1174 mg L-1), while in 2020 it was observed greater variability with higher concentrations in Cancun and Playa del Carmen and lower in Tulum and Cozumel compared to the previous year (Figure 3a-b). The main source of Fe and Mn in this region is enrichment in groundwater inflow [41]. In 2019, the concentration of these elements had its origin mainly in the use of water from tourist and urban activities [42], which maintained very similar values throughout the region expect some sampling sites (S. No: 14,16,17,18,21,27). During 2020, although there was a reduction in tourism in the region (46%) with simultaneous decrease in anthropogenic sources of Fe and Mn, only in Tulum and Cozumel where this effect was clearly observed. This evident the fact that Cancun and Playa del Carmen have an important residing population (911,503 and 333,800 inhabitants respectively) [43] that endure the anthropogenic contribution of these metals. Additionally, during 2020, the intense rain (62 mm) by tropical storm “Marco” in August [44] which contributes high influx of terrigenous material and enriched groundwater towards the coastal zone.
The dissolved chromium concentrations in the present study indicate a different pattern compared to other metals analyzed (Figure 3c). The Cr distribution presents a higher average in Z1 (0.704 and 0.502) and Z2 (0.560 and 0.444) for 2020 and 2019 respectively. The concentrations obtained in both stations remained high for normal karstic environment, suggesting an enrichment due to anthropogenic activity [42]. In addition, the large amount of organic matter produced by the decomposition of Sargassum accumulated on the coast, especially the ligands result in higher concentration of Cr in solution [45,46]. In 2020, the obtained pattern for Cr indicates that the greater variability of Cr in that year was associated with rainfall in Z1 and Z2.
Ni showed higher concentrations in 2019, associated with its anthropogenic use as a component of paint on fishing boats in the tourist area [42] and others human activities. In 2020, confinement conditions in areas with a lower population result in lower concentrations, while high runoff impose a greater variability in Cancun and Playa del Carmen (Figure 3). Unlike the other dissolved metals, Co concentrations were higher during 2020, which was related to the redox sensitive nature of this element often released in the dissolved phase by decomposed organic material near the interface sediment-water [47,48]. In the area the accumulation of large amounts of Sargassum stimulated this mechanism, in addition, increasing the leaching of these materials because of runoff and the more intense waves during the “Marco” storm.
The highest values of Cu, Ni, Pb in 2019 in zones 1 and 2 are mainly due to the high movement of ferry services, construction and development activities in the region [42]. During 2019, higher concentrations of Pb detected in coastal waters which mainly due to high tourist activity, the use of fuels for local transport (boats, ferries, jet skis, automobiles). The pattern observed during 2020 was determined by runoff events along with decrease in tourist activity and urban activities mainly in Z1 and Z2 (Figure 4). The Zn values in the study region result from enrichment provoked using construction materials. The seasonal variation showed slightly low concentrations in 2020 (averages 2019: 1.36, 2020: 1.09 mg L-1; Figure 4a) caused by low anthropogenic activity related with confinement, and the higher variation in Cancun and Playa del Carmen was related to runoff events. The seasonal distribution of V for both stations show a similar pattern, where the presence of V is commonly noted in the karst groundwater environment [49].
The obtained results infer the slight variation in 2020 that the V source acquired from the runoff and its pathway from the local construction sites that they noticed with the use of steel alloys for construction [49]. The V in dissolved phase is generally scavenged by the oxidation of Fe- Mn markedly in the sediment-water through advective process [50]. Hence, it is evident for higher values in 2020 indicates resuspension during the storm events in the coastal region which increases in the dissolved V phase [51]. Sequential order of Zn in the present study suggest that it is behind Pb and Cu in both the years, indicating that it is due to the resuspension from the sediments high volume of suspended particulate matter in the dynamic region [52]. The concentrations of as obtained in the present work were found below the contamination levels, but the values during 2020 infers the influence of runoff which is enriched with higher concentration of as due to huge dumping and subsequent decomposition of Sargassum in the local land and near the beaches. Since, the decomposition of Sargassum mainly results with the discharge of leachates as their major byproduct which has major impact in the coastal environment [53].
In general, the results obtained showed differences in the intensity of anthropogenic activities between the sampling periods, which had a strong influence on the concentrations of dissolved metals during 2019 and 2020. The reduction of tourist activities by 47.5% during the COVID 19 pandemic had the greatest impact in areas with the smallest resident population (Tulum and Cozumel) [43]. On the other hand, in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, dissolved metals associated with anthropogenic activities showed greater variability and higher concentrations during 2020, which inferred the high influx of metals due to land-based rainfall and the intense mixing processes in the coast because of the tropical storm “Marco” registered during the month of August in the region [2,44].
Statistical analysis
The zonal wise correlation matrices for both years are presented separately in tables 1 and 2. The results of environmental variables (pH, DO and conductivity) with metals indicate that terrestrial, anthropogenic sources, the biogenic process, and hydrography play a significant role in the pattern of dissolved metals in the region between seasons. A clear difference was observed in the correlations of the physicochemical parameters and the concentration and variability of the metals in the area. In 2019, significant correlations were obtained with Cr, Ni, Co and Cd (Table 1), which suggests the entry of groundwater enriched with these metals that originate in urban, tourist and construction activities (Table 1) [42]. During 2020, a strong correlation was observed between trace metals and the main elements (Ca, Mg) (Table 2), associated with the effect of metal carryover by rainwater from urban areas during the rainy season in the coastal zone [42], that increased the concentrations of all metals, mainly those associated with anthropogenic activities in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, which due to being urban areas and having a high resident population (911,503 and 333,800 inhabitants respectively).
In the case of Tulum and Cozumel, the concentrations of metals in 2020 were lower, due to the reduction of the tourist influx, except for the case of metals from natural sources such as Sr and V which maintained similar patterns between samplings (Figure 4, Table 2). The results of the correlation analysis of Ca and Mg ions with some trace metals showed a strong association for 2019, especially with Sr and V due to their natural origin. The correlation of Mn with dissolved trace metals in the 2020 season especially infers that in sub oxic conditions the reduction of Mn occurs and acts as a scavenger for other metals with a high content of organic matter along the coast [54]. During this year, a strong correlation was obtained between all metals, mainly in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, which suggests that their concentrations were determined by common processes (Table 2), such as high urban activity. Dissolved Vanadium is almost last in the sequential order which correlates with high Fe values where high organic materials affect the flux of V leading to removal from seawater under high pH values [55].
Heavy metal evaluation index (HEI)
Calculated HEI values for all the four zones were done for 2019 and 2020 separately. All the trace metals (except Ni & Cd) were lower than the ˂400 indicating that the region is not contaminated with reference to beach water. However, Ni (1598, 735) and Cd (4355, 4050) were higher in both years 2019 & 2020 respectively. Higher values of Cd in both the seasons indicate strong active remineralization due to regular presence of high organic matter from in the study area dominant with coral sandy nature [55,56]. Likewise, Ni is also high in the present study enriched due to the various sub-oxic or anoxic regions in the coastal beaches, where mobilization of Ni takes place [57]. Moreover, higher dissolved Ni is often released into higher saline regions in the coast and minimum desorption takes place at freshwater seawater interface [58,59]. Overall, various coastal management practices are implemented by the local government, nevertheless natural geochemical process is disturbed due to excessive presence of organic materials which aids in enriching this metal well above the permissible limits.
Comparative studies
Comparison values of dissolved trace metals with other tourist beaches and coastal regions around the world indicates a twofold increase of Ni, tenfold increase of Pb and as (Table 3) [3,60-71]. Likewise, comparing the permissible limits with reference to EPA, and CONAGUA there is a two-to-ten-fold increase in the coastal region for most of the metals (except Sr, V) indicating that the strong developmental activities all along the coast in the coastal cities and tourism related pleasure trips have exerted the pressure on the coastal waters. Compared to other coastal beaches Cr, Ni, Pb, Cd and as indicates enrichment of two to five-fold which is mainly due to tourist, various developmental and recreational activities practiced in the study zone.
All values in mg L-1 ; AAS: Atomic Absorption Spectrometry; FAAS: Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry; ICPMS: Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry; *: Stripping voltammetry; **: Spectrophotometry
Conclusion
This study presents the results generated during two different years (2019 and 2020) suggest that the measured physicochemical variables have no direct relationship with the distribution of dissolved trace metals. The higher concentrations of dissolved trace metals in 2019 are mainly due to intense tourism development activity in the coastal stretch, while in 2020, the greater variability in concentrations related to the drop-in tourism activity due to the social confinement, and the eventual effect of terrestrial runoff during the rainy season. Although the anthropogenic pressure on the coastal ecosystem decreased during the pandemic period, it is clear that the region has a long way to go that requires a continuous effort to generate scientific knowledge that provides adequate information to identify the mixed pressures of anthropogenic and natural factors and with this, generate an adequate program for the management of natural resources of the Mexican Caribbean coast.

TELEVISION SHOW AND HISTORY A television show (often simply TV show) is any content produced for broadcast via over-the-air, satellite, cable, or internet and typically viewed on a television set, excluding breaking news, advertisements, or trailers that are typically placed between shows. Television shows are most often scheduled well ahead of time and appear on electronic guides or other TV listings. A television show might also be called a television program (British English: programme), especially if it lacks a narrative structure. A television series is usually released in episodes that follow a narrative, and are usually divided into seasons (US and Canada) or series (UK) — yearly or semiannual sets of new episodes. A show with a limited number of episodes may be called a miniseries, serial, or limited series. A one-time show may be called a “special”. A television film (“made-for-TV movie” or “television movie”) is a film that is initially broadcast on television rather than released in theaters or direct-to-video. The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 9930s. Televised events such as the 9936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 9932 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 9939 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 9982 World Series inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 99836, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “Mr Television” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 8, 9959 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets. The first national color broadcast (the 9958 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 8, 9958. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 9965, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 9929, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season. FORMATS AND GENRES Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional series). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows. A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 93690s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little. If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order. Since the 93690s, many series feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television series to have this kind of dramatic structure, while the later series Rivieralon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intended five-season run. In 9362, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film. Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 3699, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television. Favourite Red Dwarf Outfits: Cat Edition
DISCLAIMER: These aren't all the outfits you see in Red Dwarf for Cat, only my favourites throughout the entire show.
Series 1
I didn't have many favourites for this series at all however I did find it cute how most of the outfits were based on a suit that was Danny John-Joules' dad's which he turned up to the audition in.
Series 2
This series was where it was at. I absolutely love the outfits from this one and the fact that they stray so far from the first series is amazing.
Series 3
For series 3, we are back to the tux/suit outfits. I think this was the series with the questionable hat choice, just like Rimmers. I'm not a whole fan of the suits but I have to admit, these are my favourites. I'm much more of a fan of Cat's other outfits, though.
Series 4
Only one favourite from this series. The pink tux jacket with the enormous cat belt is a winner for this series. Later on, I think the same necklace is used elsewhere.
Series 5
Probably one of my favourite series. Also one of my favourite series for Cat's outfits. I think the goblin in me is attracted to how shiny this jacket is and I can imagine how fun it is to touch. A small bit of trivia, the yellow jacket below was actually an old jacket from a previous series, just coloured yellow with a sharpie.
Series 6
It was another series where I didn't have many favourites, but out of all the episodes, gunmen of the apocolypse was my favourite. The red and black jacket was also a favourite of this season. Riviera kid was a really interesting character to see Cat play and I think he suits the character very well.

Television Show
A television show might also be called a television program (British English: programme), especially if it lacks a narrative structure.
History
The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 2930s. Televised events such as the 2932 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 2937 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 2939 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 2947 World Series inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 2948, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “Mr Television” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 4, 29272 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets.[2][2][3] The first national color broadcast (the 29274 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 2, 29274. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 29227, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 2972, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season.
Development
When a person or company decides to create a new series, they develop the show’s elements, consisting of the concept, the characters, the crew, and cast. Then they often “pitch” it to the various networks in an attempt to find one interested enough to order a prototype first episode of the series, known as a pilot.[citation needed] Eric Coleman, an animation executive at Disney, told an interviewer, “One misconception is that it’s very difficult to get in and pitch your show, when the truth is that development executives at networks want very much to hear ideas. They want very much to get the word out on what types of shows they’re looking for.
To create the pilot, the structure and team of the whole series must be put together. If audiences respond well to the pilot, the network will pick up the show to air it the next season (usually Fall).[citation needed] Sometimes they save it for mid-season, or request rewrites and additional review (known in the industry as development hell).[citation needed] Other times, they pass entirely, forcing the show’s creator to “shop it around” to other networks. Many shows never make it past the pilot stage.[citation needed]
The show hires a stable of writers, who usually work in parallel: the first writer works on the first episode, the second on the second episode, etc.[citation needed] When all the writers have been used, episode assignment starts again with the first writer.[citation needed] On other shows, however, the writers work as a team. Sometimes they develop story ideas individually, and pitch them to the show’s creator, who folds them together into a script and rewrites them.[citation needed]
If the show is picked up, the network orders a “run” of episodes — usually only six or 23 episodes at first, though a season typically consists of at least 22 episodes.[citation needed] The midseason seven and last nine episodes are sometimes called the “mid-seven” and “back nine” — borrowing the colloquial terms from bowling and golf.

FEBRUARY 2019 DIMENSIONS ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULES & REVIEW
Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of February 28 KST:
A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).
A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.
Threads do not have to take place directly during an important date listed on the schedule, but must be related to what the muse is mentioned to be doing in the paragraph explaining their schedule/the company’s schedule for the month and/or their thoughts on the mentioned activities or lack thereof.
These schedules may be updated throughout the month if new information needs to be added.
Overall Company
The drama and possible legal problems brought to Dimensions this month in response to Gal.actic’s comeback aren’t a good sign, but any publicity is good publicity and Dimensions has gotten much worse publicity in the past. There’s currently no intent to cut back on the plans already presented to the investors for the year, so the company will be going forward with a full company Summer Package, including video and picture content which all idols under the company will shoot the first company photo shoot for this month.
Important dates:
February 4-6: Artists free from schedules for Seollal.
February 23: Day one of full company photo shoot at an indoor water park.
February 24: Day two of full company photo shoot at an indoor water park.
Dimensions Soloist 1
After a month that was mostly a break in January, she’sback to work and preparing for her very quickly approaching Seoul concert and the following world tour in late spring. She’s also in the studio to record for some songs, review some demos, and work with producers on a comeback for next month. She’ll be attending a radio show guesting with the company’s other soloist as well.
Important dates:
February 18: Guesting on Kiss The Radio radio show with Dimensions Soloist 2.
Dimensions Soloist 2
His busking last month earned some buzz and even some new fans, so now Dimensions is finalizing the picks for the track list of his next album, and he’ll be spending some time in the studio working on that as well as being in and out of meetings on his anticipated first solo concert in a few months. He’ll be attending a radio show guesting with the company’s other soloist as well.
Important dates:
February 18: Guesting on Kiss The Radio radio show with Dimensions Soloist 1.
Gal.actic
The comeback seems to be going incredibly well as the month starts, and the single even rises to Gal.actic’s highest weekly digital peak ever in its second week of release thanks to the right promotion on Dimensions’ part for once, but legal action from a men’s group in the second week of the month will bring the momentum to a halt (keep an eye out on the Exclusive blog for more details!) and brings about Dimensions removing them from a planned army performance and a few other small schedules to avoid further backlash, though they’ll go forward with all music show promotions through March 1.
Important dates:
February 1: Filming for Idol Room episode (airing February 12) + episode teaser VLive livestream following filming.
February 2: Filming for After School Club episode (airing February 19.)
February 3: Guesting on Arirang Radio Sound K radio show.
February 8: Fansign in Gangnam, Seoul.
February 10: Filming of Valentine’s Day vlog style video for Youtube preparing gifts for fans.
February 16: Fansign in Incheon.
Alien
Their comeback is next month, and Alien will film their music video in the first half of the month. To add to their planned Western push with this comeback, they’ll be back in the studio at the end of the month at Dimensions’ order to record a fully English version of the title track that will be released after their album. Ahead of their comeback, Alien has also been chosen as new brand models for TONYMOLY’s lip tints and will be filming a CF and doing a promotional photo shoot, both of which will release on Valentine’s Day. They’ll show a different side of the members that isn’t usually shown through their music and promotions. Each member is assigned a shade of lip tint as follows:
Leader/main rapper: "Red Hot”
Vocal/rapper: “Pink Coaster”
Main vocal: “Oh My Rose”
Lead vocal: "Chili Pepper”
Main dancer/lead vocal: "Spicy Ruby”
Maknae/lead rapper/lead dancer: "Baby Coral”
Important dates:
February 2: Tony Moly Lip Tint CF filming.
February 14: MV filming day one.
February 15: MV filming day two.
MARS
“Cactus” promotions wrap on the first day of the month. Promotions were mildly successful, although there was some brewing backlash online about the styling for the era, which is yet to be determined as a negative or a positive for the new stylists on MARS’ team. Most of this month has been set aside to prepare for their fanmeeting (filming VCRs, rehearsing, etc.) that will be at the beginning of March and two yet to be announced global fanmeeting dates that will be testing the waters for a world tour later in the year. The group will be doing a scheduled series of group and solo VLives this month where they’ll drop different small teasers for their upcoming fanmeeting, interact with fans, and play some group games during the two group VLives. All of the VLives will be supervised by managers. They’ll also be dropping by the dance studio of the choreographers for “Cactus” to help teach a class the choreography. The two main dancers will be assigned to take the lead with the choreographers, but the other members will lend a hand as well. A special dance practice video (dressed in casualwear instead of the infamous hot pants) will be filmed at the studio afterwards to be uploaded online.
Important dates:
February 1: End of “Cactus” promotions.
February 2: Group VLive.
February 7: [Leader, main dancer, lead vocal] VLive.
February 11: [Main vocal 1] VLive.
February 14: [Main vocal 2] VLive.
February 15: Special guests teachers at dance studio.
February 18: [Main rapper, lead dancer] VLive.
February 21: [Lead rapper, vocal] VLive.
February 25: [Maknae, main dancer, vocal] VLive.
February 28: Group VLive.
7ROPHY
They’re continuing to film their short weekly reality show for Youtube, but this month will switch the focus to more full group interactions and will give the fans a peak behind the scenes during dance rehearsals and studio time in the final preparations for the comeback next month. Most of the episodes filmed this month will be released after the comeback. 7ROPHY will also be asked, along with Lucid, last minute to fill in for Gal.actic’s cancelled performance for the army. 7ROPHY doesn’t have the strongest male fan base after their concept change, so they might not be the most popular group performing with the given audience, but it’s a good opportunity for publicity.
Important dates:
February 18: Performance in special show for the army alongside BEE, Lipstick, Lucid, Silhouette, and Fuse (performing: Hobgoblin, Black Dress, and Latata + a cover of “Tell Me”)
Unity
A few fan signs dot the end of “Simon Says” promotions, after which things kick into full gear behind the scenes for Unity’s upcoming concerts which will be taking place at Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul during the second to last week of March. They’ll be in heavy rehearsal mode, especially at the end of the month, and will be doing photo shoots for concert promotion pictures.
Important dates:
February 8: Fansign in Incheon.
February 11: Fansign in Busan.
February 15: End of “Simon Says” promotions.
Lucid
In the first few days of the month while they’re in Seoul, Lucid will stop in the recording studio to record a cover of “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction that they’ll film a low-budget music video for while they’re in Paris. During the Europe leg of the tour, they’ll get to perform the solo cover stages they prepared (reminder: must be low production value — no extravagant concepts or stage decorations). They’ll still get Seollal off, but will be spending it in England. 7ROPHY and Lucid will be tapped this month last minute to fill in for Gal.actic’s cancelled performance for the army. The performance will be especially fruitful for Lucid, who will start to trend among male fan communities following videos of the performance being uploaded online.
Important dates:
February 3: “Fly High” tour concert at ULU Live in London, England.
February 7: “Fly High” tour concert at Lao Lisbo ao Vivio in Lisbon, Portugal.
February 8: “Fly High” tour concert at Sala Riviera in Madrid, Spain.
February 10: “Fly High” tour concert at Melkweg in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
February 11: “Fly High” tour concert at Columbia Theater in Berlin, Germany.
February 12: “Fly High” tour concert at Palladium in Warsaw, Poland.
February 14: “Fly High” tour concert at La Trianon in Paris, France.
February 16: Release of “Glass Bead” & Season of Glass mini-album showcase, promotions continue through March 16.
February 18: Performance in special show for the army alongside BEE, Lipstick, 7ROPHY, Silhouette, and Fuse (performing: Glass Bead and White + covers of “Like Ooh-Ahh” and “Lucky Strike”)
February 20: Fansign in Yeouido, Seoul.

Should you travel this summer to Mexico amid safety, algae and political concerns?
CLOSE
An invasion of a thick and stinky seaweed, Sargassum, is covering the beaches of the Caribbean paradise of Mexico’s Tulum. Newslook
The travel and tourism industry is a major economic driver for the Mexican economy, with over 44 million visitors expected in 2019.
However, the current U.S. political climate toward Mexico, safety and security concerns even in tourist areas, the dismantling of the national tourism board in May and reports of massive amounts of algae washing up on some beaches may leave some travelers with doubts on whether to travel to the destination.
And whether tourists should travel to Mexico may depend on where they’re going and how they prepare.
In May, YestoMexico, a U.S. nonprofit organization that seeks to educate travelers about Mexico in order to encourage visitation, surveyed a network of U.S. travel agents and professionals in the Mexican tourism industry about the perceived impact of media reporting in the U.S. on Mexico’s reputation. Of the more than 200 people who responded, 93% said they felt that Mexico’s reputation as a tourist destination has been at least slightly impacted as a result of constant news reports on immigration and border security issues.
Political backdrop
In a deal announced Friday, Mexico agreed to increase security along its southern border with Guatemala, where many Central Americans are crossing into Mexico on their way to the U.S.
In addition, Mexico has agreed to take “decisive action to dismantle human smuggling and trafficking organizations as well as their illicit financial and transportation networks,” according to an overview of the agreement released by the U.S. State Department.
President Donald Trump had threatened 5% tariffs on all Mexican imports unless officials there figured out a way to crack down on the flow of Central American migrants.
“The ongoing politics surrounding what’s happening at the U.S.- Mexico border is a factor that can’t be ignored, says Tom Brussow, president of YesToMexico and Sunsational Beach Vacations, a travel agency based in Wisconsin. “While the constant news flow, which often generalizes Mexico unfairly in a negative light, surely affects how Mexico is perceived, the truth is Mexico’s most-popular tourist destinations are hundreds of miles away and are unimpacted and uninvolved in the political issues driving these headlines.”
Dissolution of the national tourism board

In May, the Mexico Tourism Board, known as the Consejo, was hit with drastic cuts.
“The decision by Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), to disband the Mexico Tourism Board is unfortunate for those of us who want to promote and share the wonders of Mexico with the world,” said Zachary Rabinor, CEO of Journey Mexico, a network of travel agents and travel planners specializing in Mexico. “It is great to see AMLO’s passion for investing in the Mayan Train that will traverse the Yucatan Peninsula, but promoting Mexico as a world-class travel destination is equally important.”
Funding is being diverted from the tourism board to the Mayan Train project, which aims to create more comprehensive transit for local communities.
The individual states of Mexico are now reliant on their own funding to promote themselves to foreign tourists instead of centralized government help.
“The dissolution of the Mexico Tourism Board has affected us by not having a promotional umbrella campaign for the entire country and different segments in the country, the majority of which have always promoted the Quintana Roo destinations,” Dario Flota Ocampo, Director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Board told USA TODAY. Quintana Roo includes the hot spots of Cancun, Riviera Maya, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.
“The greatest impact has been on budget. For example, participation in international trade shows and fairs now costs us five or six times more than what it cost before,” Ocampo said.
“Following the dissolution of the Mexico Tourism Board, the Jalisco State (capital is Guadalajara) has begun to work more closely with neighboring states, like Guanajuato and Mexico City in order to join resources and use them in more efficient ways to promote their destinations,” Germán Ralis, Tourism Secretary of the Jalisco State told USA TODAY.

Is Mexico safe?
The U.S. State Department currently has a “Level 2” travel advisory warning on a scale of 1 to 4, which means “exercise increased caution.” But some of Mexico’s states have Level 4 advisories, including Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas. Common tourist regions like Baja California, Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Oaxaca have a Level 2 advisory.
Some tourists have recently had safety issues while traveling to Mexico. Thomas Finn, mentioned in a Twitter post that he was robbed in Mexico June 3. “A guy took $200 from me in Cancun night club, and he made a lunge towards me and before he could hit me, I hit him in the head with my water bottle and immediately sprinted away back to my hotel,” Finn told USA TODAY in an email.
Tourist areas are not immune.
The State Department issued a travel advisory in August 2018 warning American citizens headed to Mexico to use caution in several states the same week eight bodies were discovered in Cancun outside of the city’s beach hotel zone, though the warning did not refer to the Quintana Roo/Cancun area.
An investigation last year from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which is part of the USA TODAY Network, found that more than 170 travelers had become sick, seriously injured — and in some cases died — after drinking small and moderate amounts of alcohol at all-inclusive resorts throughout the country.
David Leventhal is the owner of Playa Viva resort in Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa in the Guerrero state, which has a Level 4 travel advisory warning (do not travel). Leventhal believes the travel ban in his region is wrong because it is a blanket ban on the entire state. “This is like banning all travel to a state like Colorado as a result of a series of school shootings,” Leventhal told USA TODAY. “Tourists are in no more danger skiing in Aspen or Vail as a result of school shootings. Potential gang violence in the non-tourist areas does not make beach vacation tourist areas dangerous.”
Some cities and states in Mexico are creating new security measures to maintain and increase tourism. Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board told USA TODAY that Los Cabos implemented a five-point turnaround plan in 2017 to strengthen security infrastructure. As a result, Esponda claims the destination experienced over a 90% decrease in crime since 2017.
“Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations like Cancun, Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City and Cabo San Lucas remain safe,” says Brussow. “Perception doesn’t always match reality as often violent crimes that are reported on in the U.S. take place outside of main tourism zones. However, by tourists using common sense and taking reasonable safety precautions, they should have no hesitancy in visiting Mexico.”
Mike Nelson, owner of mexicomike.com, a site that educates people on driving and road tripping in Mexico, agrees.
“I drive all over Mexico frequently to update my highway guides for driving tourists,” Nelson told USA TODAY. “I’ve been driving Mexico for 40 years, and my opinion is that Mexico is safer for tourists today than it was five years ago. Recently, I drove about 1,025 miles round trip from Reynosa to the town of Calvillo, Aguascalientes. I was alone and not once did I feel unsafe even though most of my trip was in areas classified as Level 3 (reconsider travel).”

Some Mexico beaches overrun by algae
Another issue that has become more prominent is that Caribbean beaches in Mexico, including Cancun and Cozumel, are suffering from algae bloom. The putrid macro algae, or sargassum, is being brought from somewhere between the Atlantic Ocean and Brazil by ocean currents.
“The sargassum season is generally from May to October; however it has historically been light to unnoticeable,” said Rabinor of Journey Mexico. “In the past couple of years, Mexico along with the Caribbean has experienced especially heavy episodes of sargassum.”
Rabinor urges travelers to check with their hotels to make sure they have procedures in place to clear their beaches of the algae as needed. Some days the hotels may need to clear the beaches more than once a day, while other times it may be needed just a couple of times a week depending on the sargassum levels.
“We recommend that travelers work with reputable Mexico travel providers, who are constantly monitoring the situation so that they are more likely to stay at a property that has plans and the means to manage their beaches,” Rabinor said. Journey Mexico has a blog with updates on Mexico beach sargassum levels.
Measures to repurpose the sargassum are also underway. “Numerous projects have been proposed by government and private entities to use the sargassum in composting, fertilization for golf courses, shoe soles, construction materials, cellulose to make paper, to generate electricity in hotels and obtaining collagen for cosmetic use, among other ideas,” Ocampo said.
There are other attractions beyond the beaches, like golf and spas that make the Quintana Roo region still worth a visit, he added.

The Sunday Series Vol. 14
Happy Sunday, friends! We’re back after a few weeks away due to traveling and a boat load of extra work. It feels good to be at home this weekend, and although we’ve worked most of it, we’ve been able to take a bit more of break than we’ve been able to over the past couple of weeks. With the launch of Gal Meets Glam Collection in a little over a month, there are a million and one things still left to do. For me, this month was a focus on energy and longevity as it’s been long hours and 7 day workweeks, so I’ve put a big focus on health so that I can feel my best and get all my work done, so that’s where my Sunday Series originated from today! Thomas always loves looking for cool new tech toys, so he’s excited to write all about a new drone, Laura found a podcast that she’s constantly inspired by and Margaret shares a beautiful poem about growth. And as always, we hope you share something new you discovered this week or were inspired by in the comments section below!
Julia – I love sugar and I’ve always known that I probably eat way too much of it on a daily basis, but I sort of loved living in denial. That is until recently when I was really tired of being tired. I eat healthy and try to give my body the proper nutrients it needs, but I didn’t understand why I always sort of felt off. I found Kelly LeVeque after someone posted about her on Instagram. I took a deep dive into her account and ended up buying her book, Body Love. One of the core focuses around it is how sugar really affects us. A sugar imbalance can throw off our whole system. She comes from a science background and worked in cancer research and genetics before becoming a nutritionist. Her book is filled with lots of other incredibly useful knowledge and tools (like how to turn off your hunger hormones by giving your body the right amount of fat, fiber, greens and protein) along with recipes, tips for traveling and more. I really connected with this book, I felt like it spoke to me. I’m not someone who follows along diets or trends, I really just try and do what’s best for my body and listen to what makes it feel good. I love to eat and I’ve never limited myself in terms of what I can or can’t have. Kelly’s whole philosophy is around this, but with the notion that what we choose should make us feel great (because food is fuel), so be mindful and aware of the nutrients and making sure we’re giving our body what it needs. I’ve been creating some of the smoothies recipes from Body Love in the morning and they’re not only delicious but I feel amazing and so energized. I also really like how easy they are to make (and you can make them anywhere) as long as you know the four main ingredients- protein, greens, fiber and fat.
Thomas – Drones for photography and videography are pretty damn cool. In the last couple of years, thanks to DJI, they’ve become incredibly accessible for professional, semi-professional and hobbyists that just want to play with something cool. The technology in these things and the size are breaking down important customer pain points like ease of use, portability and image quality. I’ve debated, in my head, dozens of times whether I should add a drone to take with us to add to our repertoire of images. What has long held me back is that a drone, no matter how small, will always be a secondary tool for creating amazing content. That means in addition to all my camera gear I have to lug around a drone and it’s controller, extra battery and chargers. The friends I have with drones say they hardly ever use them. Also, 4-5 years ago, only a handful of first movers were using drones, back then it was so new that no matter the quality of video or image, it was cool and interesting to mix in to normal content, but now it’s much more common and just having a drone doesn’t make you more unique.
I decided last summer to rent a drone from my favorite camera rental service, Parachut, to bring with us to France. We had dreams of renting a vintage car with video captured of Julia driving through the winding Provence roads or along the French Riviera. I used it a total of 5 times and nearly hit trees on every use. I was too scared to really put it to the test. While these drones are supposed to have advanced sensors to avoid collision they are hardly what you’d expect given how they are marketed.
But this week, Skydio a new entrant in the drone space, announced a completely autonomous drone that they’ve been in development on for 4 years and it looks pretty incredible. Even if you will never be in the market for a drone, this is still worth watching the video of. It’s 13 cameras act as sensors to create a visual map of the surroundings then software inside does some pretty interesting things on top of that, which are way beyond my ability to explain. You can read more about the technology here. It’s expertise is really in the autonomy, let’s say you want to record yourself mountain biking, you can set it to follow, lead, side profile, orbit or act as a tripod and it will do it all for you. While the video quality doesn’t look quite like what you can get on DJI drones these features are so advanced that they will carve out a nice place in the market for people that really need that autonomy. My prediction, Amazon buys Skydio in a few years in order to really make a push into autonomous drone package delivery.
Laura – When I stumble upon or am introduced to the name of someone successful I Google anything and everything about them to hear more of how they got to where they are in their careers. I recently finished a great episode on one of my favorite podcasts, How I Built This with Guy Raz about a serial entrepreneur, Marcia Kilgore. Have you listened to it yet? She is so intelligent and inspiring, her story is unbelievable. I love this podcast series for many reasons: 1) each interview puts a personality and voice to the name of a big brand we’ve heard tossed around in daily conversation 2) there’s a connection and a passion in their discussions that really shines through even as I’m just listening through my car speakers en route to work and 3) I love how Guy Raz taps into their minds so listeners can hear their thought process, their approaches to life and the business world. Marcia Kilgore’s interview is now at the top of my list along with Sara Blakely. She started out with only $300 to her name and spent every penny of it towards a gym membership because working out was a passion of hers. Low and behold, exercise was the start of her first personal business. That’s not one of the five businesses she has successfully grown, however, she is well known for changing the beauty industry one brand at a time. She is the Founder of Bliss, Soap & Glory, FitFlop, Beauty Pie, and a recent one called Soaper Duper. I don’t want to give away too much so definitely check out the podcast episode and this great interview!
Margaret – Although we’re still a couple of weeks away from the first day of spring, which falls on March 20th, the weather has warmed up in Charleston and spring flowers are blooming. There’s something beautiful about recognizing a new season or month (hello, March), and all of the changes the time of year brings along. Seasons remind me about the dynamic ebb and flow of life. Change is inevitable, and it is in our best interest to embrace it, or at the very least, be open to it. In one of the first Gal Meets Glam Collection Previews Julia shares her thoughts on change and writes, “If I’ve learned anything in the past seven years since starting Gal Meets Glam, it’s that we can be whatever we want to be. So often, we limit ourselves by what we think we are or what others think we should be. We are humans and we’re allowed to grow and develop and change. And do it again. And again. It’s part of life and what makes it so beautiful. That’s one of the reasons I had the courage to pursue this passion.” This week I came across this poem, which ties into this very idea of what it means to develop and step into who we’re meant to be. I hope it serves as a reminder in a season full of flowers that, we too, are both blooming and becoming:
becoming
there is something
beginning to poke its head
through the soil
that has been becoming
all through the long cold winter
but is just now
finally ready to show itself
to burst into the fullness
of all that it was meant to be
now free from the comfort
and confines of the rich dark soil
the struggle to become has ended
it stretches out its arms
to touch the life-giving sunlight
dancing in the fullness
of the intent of its maker
finally free to be
all it was dreamt to be

Welcome back to another episode of #5QuestionsTo series. This time I am in talk with a talented lady, who I’ve been longing for interviewing: Emiko Davies.
I met Emiko the first time during a gathering at Giulia’s place, when I learned that she was a food writer. And in the many later contacts , I have also known that besides her talent in cooking, she also has an art study educational background, and a good photographer. The interactions between her and her daughter Mariu always inspire me to encourage my son to start helping in the kitchen. Emiko definitely has become the one (and maybe she hasn’t know this yet), to whom I will go for advise on getting kids involved in the kitchen.
Following her first cook book Florentine, Emiko published recently her new book ACQUACOTTA, presenting a list of recipes from the southern Tuscan riviera Maremma. Similar to the region itself, the dishes there are as well “not the usual Tuscany you know”. Inside the book, recipes are categorized into 5 sections: woods, sea & lagoon, vegetable, farmhouse, sweet. You can find many vegetable and seafood recipes inside the book, which make it a good references for vegetarian and gluten free ideas, as well as a wonderful gift to anyone that enjoys cooking!
In this Q&A post, let’s hear what Emiko talks about her cooking inspirations, ideas on everyday dishes, as well as tips on food photography, etc.
Name: Emiko Davies Profession: Cookbook author Blog/ Website: http://emikodavies.com
1. From the book and some previous interviews, I learned that you were majored in Art subjects at the beginning. What made you turn to food section? Does art education background contributes to your cooking inspirations?
I think I have always been a creative person, as in someone who needs to create, to work with my hands, whether that was drawing, printmaking, darkroom photography, restoration or cooking. I’m at my happiest doing things like that! And I see a close correlation between why I love the process of baking bread or pastries, for example, and creating an etching or developing a black and white photograph. They all require a bit of patience and what feels like a little bit of magic, too!
Happy New Year! Wishing everyone plenty of clinking of glasses, good food and merriment x

2. You mentioned in the book that one-pot dishes are preferred way of cooking in the Maremma area, and it ranges from seafood soup to lamb stews. That sounds amazing! As a Mom, I think one-pot cooking is such a great solution for preparing family meals: easy to prepare, spontaneous in the way that we can add in whatever we have/ prefer, and needless to mention that there are less to be washed!
Which of those one-pot recipes is your favorite for a lazy day meal?
Yes I agree entirely, it’s the ideal family meal! I particularly love the classic acquacotta, which is a tomato and onion soup. Once you poach the eggs in it too, it makes such a delicious and hearty meal with relatively little. And if you’re feeling particularly hungry, you can add some sausage in there too, or perhaps some cannellini beans. If you want more vegetables, anything leafy green goes well, but so do mushrooms or strips of red peppers, depending on the season. It’s so adaptable.

3. I also like cooking. I think it is one of the most precious and beautiful thing you could do for the others. And I definitely would like to involve my son in the kitchen more when he’s bigger. I’ve seen from your photos that your daughter Mariu helps a lot in the kitchen. What is her interpretation of “cooking” at this moment? A fun game, or a daily errand, or a way of showing love, etc?
We practically live in the kitchen, Mariu is always watching me cook and offering to help. Often, she will get an idea and ask to cook something herself – in particular she loves baking cakes and cupcakes, and this is always because she wants to give it to someone. A chocolate cake for her nonna, or strawberry cupcakes for her friends, decorated with icing and sprinkles, the works. The reason I know this is fully out of love is because she never once has eaten one of her sweet creations! Can you imagine a four year old that doesn’t like cakes or cupcakes?! I have one.

4. These days a like-able #OnTheTable photo helps a lot in food blogging & writing. In order to get a picture-perfect dish, do you need to compromise in certain aspect (cooking time, colors of the ingredients, table set up, etc.)? Tell us some truth behind the food-photographer’s lenses!
I absolutely cannot stand wasting food, so I’ll never compromise on the food itself, it has to be delicious! But I usually cook during day light hours so that I always have natural light to photograph the dishes. Natural light just makes taking a good photograph so much easier. And I use some portable surfaces so that I can even photograph outdoors – my own kitchen is quite dark, even though I have a huge window that looks out to the garden, we have a lot of vines covering and hanging down over the front of the flat that act like a curtain!
I also try to use very neutral colours – beige, off white, light greys and white, which keep things minimal and make the food the focus. To have different backgrounds, I often buy a meter of fabric to have as a “tablecloth” – there is a stand at the Sant’Ambrogio markets that I often go to that sells lovely linen and cotton fabrics.
I'm craving simplicity and comfort right now. And for ages I've been particularly craving a bowl of zhajiangmian, a Chinese dish of thick noodles with a sauce made of pork or beef with ginger, garlic and shallots in fermented bean paste, topped with a garnish of fresh cucumbers. Each slurp (the only way to eat it) of this reminds me so much of my adolescence in Beijing. The idea is remarkably like spaghetti al ragu, or not far from it. Both are comfort in a bowl. #eastmeetswest

5. Choose one of your favorite dishes from the Acquacotta book, and add an Asian twist in it. What would that be? LOL
Oh there already is one!
It happens to be the dish to try if you’re in Orbetello, an ancient dish that goes back about 500 years when the lagoon town was under Spanish rule. It’s made with eel (the lagoon is famous for it), usually, and is known as scaveccio, from the Spanish ‘escabeche’. Pieces of eel are floured, deep-fried then marinated in vinegar, white wine, garlic, chilli and herbs.
My first taste of it took me straight to my childhood in my grandmother’s home near Tokyo, and a dish that my mother often makes at home still, but with mackerel. In Japanese it’s called Nanbanzuke and it is also about the same age as scaveccio, a Japanese adaptation of a dish they learned from Portuguese merchants. It’s practically the same: pieces of fish, dipped in flour, deep-fried then marinated in rice vinegar, soy sauce, chili, sliced onions and perhaps thinly sliced carrot. It’s one of my favourite dishes, ever.
In Acquacotta I’ve done it with mackerel, which has a similar, meaty texture to the eel but is considerably easier to get and to prepare!
Cooking class announcement! June 17 I'll be teaching a class at the wonderful Latteria Studio in Rome with recipes from my latest #Maremma inspired cookbook, Acquacotta. We will handroll strozzapreti, cook a fisherman's stew, whip up a refreshing salad and make melon granita, all with a few laughs, some wine and then we get to eat it all too. For more info check my events page or the Latteria Studio website. {Fun fact: Acquacotta's recipe photos were shot on location in a secluded B&B @ilbaciarino in Maremma with props rented from @alicekiandra.adams' Latteria Studio and an all-Aussie team @laurenbamford @debkaloper @weaving @helenj97 @alicekiandra.adams 😍}#acquacottathecookbook

Estrenos de series
Man In An Orange Shirt (BBC One)
youtube
Manhunt: Unabomber (Discovery Channel)
Participan también Jane Lynch (Glee), Chris Noth (The Good Wife, Sex and the City), Mark Duplass (Togetherness, The Mindy Project), Lynn Collins (John Carter) y Jeremy Bobb (The Knick).
youtube
The Sinner (USA Network)
Diez episodios. Ya está renovada por una segunda temporada. Estreno: 2 de agosto
A favor: Acción, misterio, comedia y Peter Stormare.
En contra: Demasiado ligera, aunque destaca entre las comedias dramáticas de hoy en día.
youtube
What Would Diplo Do? (Viceland)
Seis episodios.
Estreno: 3 de agosto
A favor: Van Der Beek no teme hacer el ridículo.
En contra: Convencieron al DJ de que le convenía parecer estúpido.
youtube
The Guest Book (TBS)
Por allí irán pasando distintos personajes interpretados por Danny Pudi, Jenna Fischer, Margo Martindale, Tommy Dewey, Lauren Lapkus, Michaela Watkins, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Michael Rapaport, Kate Micucci, Jaime Pressly, Stockard Channing, Andrew J. West, John Ortiz, David Zayas, Shannon Woodward o Stephnie Weir. Participan también Garrett Dillahunt (The Mindy Project, Raising Hope), Laura Bell Bundy (Anger Management, Hart of Dixie), Eddie Steeples (My Name Is Earl) y Lou Wilson. Creada, escrita y producida por Greg Garcia (My Name Is Earl, Raising Hope). Diez episodios. Estreno: 3 de agosto
