currently kansas city has a bunch of goats on the loose because we are the most unserious city and everyone in the comments of the news posting is like “praying in four years they multiply enough to over run the city 🙏” “guess our only option it to rename our football team, we’re the GOATs now” “free goats you say” like be so fucking for real 😭
#context: there’s always been loose goats in kc#but the majority of these were brought in for environmental efforts to have them graze on the riverfront areas#but we’ve had a couple bad storms the past few weeks and their primary enclosure was damaged so almost all of them escaped#BUT the original owners are like ‘nope 💜 those aren’t OUR goats’ which is#hence the jokes but in actuality the city is working with kc pet project to gather them up and move them to a safer space#then just free city roaming#eris: text

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Fantasmic! and the recent reopening of the show in Hollywood Studios last month, let’s give a spotlight to three people who were pivotal in its creation: director Barnette Ricci, art director Tom Butsch, and composer and music producer Bruce Healey.
Fantasmic! was created as a stopgap attraction between the releases of Splash Mountain in 1989 and Toontown in 1993. Michael Eisner liked the idea of having a show in the Rivers of America to pack the restaurants along the riverfront, and possible ideas for what could kind of nighttime show could occupy the river were thrown about for years before it developed into a celebration of Disney’s animated feature films. But figuring out how to be able to project scenes from the films turned out to be a big problem, for raising and lowering traditional projection screens would not only be a clunky process on the river but also a slow one that would break the momentum of a show. Luckily, Barnette Ricci, a long-time show director for the Disney Parks who would be named a Disney Legend in 2019, found the solution on a research trip to Paris: she discovered a piece of tech developed and patented by a French company named Aquatique Show. The “water screens,” as they were called, used high-pressure nozzles to create fans of mist onto which the film clips could be projected through rear projection.
Ricci: By layering the dancing water fountains, special lighting, lasers, pyrotechnics and black light, along with live performers on watercraft and this new way to project animation on water, I was convinced all of these elements combined would create a rather exciting show! …It took months of searching through Disney film footage to find the right clips for the storyline and to create the film elements so they would look great on the water.
The Rivers of America was drained and reconstructed to accommodate the infrastructure that would be needed for Fantasmic!. The team was on a time crunch to be able to get the show done to serve as a proper stopgap between Splash Mountain and Toontown. Ricci wrote the script (as well as the lyrics to the song “Imagination”) and continued to re-edit it as Bruce Healey re-scored the iconic music from these films, but according to Tom Butsch, the story and spirit of Fantasmic! hardly strayed from Barnette Ricci’s initial vision.
Tom Bustch originally worked as a set designer in theater and then moved onto sitcoms before finding work set decorating on shows and seasonal attractions at the Disney Parks, where he would work for over 20 years. He storyboarded the entirety of Fantasmic! and materialized Ricci’s vision and brought it to life through the many set pieces used in the show. With a limited budget, his team made Fantasmic! economical as they could without ever sacrificing quality or scale. When they found that they were unable to afford the technology required to animate their Maleficent dragon, Butsch devised it so that a mechanical head would be raised on a genie lift (cherry picker) rigged with chains for the wings which would be flapped by performers (this dragon would eventually be replaced with a fully mechanical dragon in 2009).
Bruce Healey is famous for having reportedly produced every musical score in every parade and show at Disneyland between 1984 and 2017, but he’s done work across Disney Parks around the world and has been a composer, arranger, orchestrator, and conductor on everything from nighttime shows to television specials during his tenure. But out of the hundreds and hundreds of projects he’s worked on, Fantasmic!, on which he not only arranged and rescored the classic music from Disney films but also composed the main iconic theme to the show, is the work he says he is most proud of.
Healey: Fantasmic! still tops the list. I’m grateful for the chance to do some of my best work on that show.
It is more important to me that people around know and enjoy the music I’ve created and produced. If I’m not well known, but my music is well known because it’s part of the Disney legacy in some way, then that is great with me.
Fantasmic! was only supposed to run for a few years, but its enduring popularity has allowed it to become a classic staple of Disneyland and, with its recent renovation and reopening, will likely play on for many more years to come.

Art in the Stations: West Riverfront
Once known as Joe Louis Arena Station, West Riverfront is making way for a new neighborhood feel. Whimsical, glittery colors in "Voyage" by Gerome Kamrowski embodies both mythology and astrology. The tiles were made in Spillemberg, Italy by Crovatto Mosaics- the same company that created "Calvacade of Cars" in Huntington Place Station!
Kamrowski has been creating beautiful glass mosaics for many years, as shown below in "2002, Cottage Studio, Ann Arbor."
Hop off the Detroit People Mover and head to the riverwalk to check out the beautiful pedestrian path as well as the new Water Square development.
Although there is a lot of work to be done to make it a walkable neighborhood, the 25-story Residences at Water Square is under construction at the former Joe Louise Arena site. Currently pre-leasing for February 2024, the project is coming together nicely!

Historic replicas of Columbus' ships, The Nina and Pinta sailing Ohio River this fall
By DAVE LAVENDER The Herald-Dispatch [email protected]
Sep 19, 2018
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — You can step aboard a bit of maritime history starting this weekend as replicas of The Nina and Pinta — two of three ships Christopher Columbus guided from Spain to The Bahamas in 1492 — will be docked at Point Park, 113 Ann St., Parkersburg from Friday, Sept. 21 until their departure early Wednesday, morning Sept. 26.
The ships open to the general public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 through Tuesday, Sept. 25. The boats will also be making seven other Ohio River port city stops this fall through mid November.
The closest it will be to Huntington is a Friday, Nov. 9 through Monday, Nov. 18 stay at Ashland Port & Riverfront Park 50 15th St., Ashland. Other stops are: Sept. 28 through Oct. 2, at Heritage Port in Wheeling, W.Va., Oct. 4-16 at Station Square in Pittsburgh, Pa., Oct. 19-23 at Marietta Harbor, Marietta, Ohio, Oct. 26-31 at Haddad Riverfront Park in Charleston, W.Va., Nov. 2-7 at City Park Dock in Gallipolis, Ohio, Nov. 9-18 at Ashland Port and Riverfront Park, and then Nov. 20-22 at Limestone Landing Park in Maysville, Ky.
This is the first stop in Ashland since 2015. The boats were last in Huntington in 2012.
The Nina replica was built first when American engineer and maritime historian John Patrick Sarsfield was hired by the Virgin Islands-based Columbus Foundation to design and construct the 15th Century Caravel in 1988. The Nina was built by hand and without the use of power tools and is considered to be the most historically correct Columbus Replica ever built.
Co-designer Jonathon Nance, a British maritime historian and lead project researcher, produced the Nina's 1,919 square foot sail plan.

Researchers model benefits of riverfront forest restoration
https://sciencespies.com/nature/researchers-model-benefits-of-riverfront-forest-restoration/
Researchers model benefits of riverfront forest restoration
A new Stanford University-led study in Costa Rica reveals that restoring relatively narrow strips of riverfront forests could substantially improve regional water quality and carbon storage. The analysis, available online and set to be published in the October issue of Ecosystem Services, shows that such buffers tend to be most beneficial in steep, erosion-prone, and intensively fertilized landscapes — a finding that could inform similar efforts in other countries.
“Forests around rivers are key places to target for restoration because they provide huge benefits with very little impediment to productive land,” said study lead author Kelley Langhans, a PhD student in biology at Stanford University affiliated with the Natural Capital Project. “A small investment could have a really big impact on the health of people and ecosystems.”
Unleashing potential
Vegetated areas adjacent to rivers and streams absorb harmful pollutants in runoff, keeping them out of waterways. Creating effective policies to safeguard these riparian buffers and prioritizing where to implement them is a challenge in part because of a lack of data quantifying the impact of restoring such areas. The researchers, in partnership with officials from Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment and Energy, Central Bank and PRIAS Laboratory, analyzed one such policy — Costa Rica’s Forest Law 7575. Passed in 1996 and unevenly enforced since then, the law mandates protection of forested riverfront strips 10 meters (about 33 feet) to 50 meters (about 164 feet) wide.
Using InVEST, the Natural Capital Project’s free, open-source software, the team compared a scenario in which the law was fully enforced with a business-as-usual scenario. They modeled the effects of reforesting 10-meter-wide strips, thereby underestimating the effects of the law’s provisions. Still, their models showed such a change would boost retention of phosphorus by nearly 86%, retention of nitrogen by more than 81%, and retention of sediment by about 4%. The expanded forest cover — an increase of about 2% nationwide — would also increase carbon sequestration by 1.4%.
This reforestation would be most impactful in areas below steep slopes with erosion-prone land uses (such as pastures), high levels of fertilizer application (such as widely cultivated oil palm trees), and low levels of nutrient retention (such as urban areas). Such changes could have huge impacts on areas of Costa Rica where large numbers of people are directly dependent on rivers for drinking water.
“When quantifying the benefits of ecosystem restoration, it’s crucial to consider how it affects people, especially the most vulnerable populations,” said Langhans. “That is why in this research we explicitly mapped out how increases in water quality would reach those who rely on rivers the most.”
Even regions with water treatment infrastructure could benefit because such infrastructure is particularly vulnerable to hurricanes and earthquakes in Costa Rica. As recently as 2020, a tropical storm combined with a hurricane knocked out water service to 120,000 Costa Ricans for several days, forcing people to temporarily rely on other water sources, including streams. Typical water treatment methods also do not remove nitrates, which are especially susceptible to leaching into groundwater due to their high solubility. This is a particular concern in Costa Rica, which uses nitrogen-based fertilizers at one of the highest rates in the world.
Most of the land that would need to be reforested to create these buffers is farmland and pasture for cattle. Past research has shown that Costa Rican farmers value trees on their land and are generally supportive of reforestation, but feel that the upfront costs of transitioning to forest, and — on more productive lands — the opportunity costs of forgoing agricultural production, are too high. Improved financial incentives — such as expanding Costa Rica’s Payments for Ecosystem Services program — and community-based efforts could help, according to the researchers.
The study comes at a key time for Costa Rica, which is implementing a National Decarbonization Plan aimed at increasing forest cover to 60%.
“Our study provides a model for using realistic, policy-based scenarios to pinpoint areas where forest restoration could have the largest impact in terms of improving people’s health and meeting national adaptation and emissions goals,” study coauthor Rafael Monge Vargas, director of Costa Rica’s National Geoenvironmental Information Center in the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

Upson-Walton Company Building (Arhaus Furniture Building)
1294-1310 Old River Rd. (W. 11th St.)
Cleveland, OH
The Upson-Walton Company/Arhaus Furniture Building is located at 1294-1310 Old River Rd. (W. 11th St.) in Cleveland, OH. Joseph E. Upson and John W. Walton opened a chandler and grocer business on River Street in Cleveland in 1871. Due to Cleveland's location as a port on the Great Lakes, Cuyahoga River, and Ohio Canal, the Upson-Walton Company was well-positioned to build and expand a marine supply business. The company gradually expanded in to the manufacture and sale of rope, cable, tackle blocks, fitting-out materials, sails, rigging, and other marine accessories. Many 19th century vessels had their sail and rigging work done by the skilled craftsmen of Upson-Walton. The firm invented several types of wire ropes that became widely used for marine applications, especially one designed for towing on the Great Lakes.
The Upson-Walton Company Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 1974. After ninety years of business in its original building, the Upson-Walton Company was taken over by the Samsel Rope and Supply Company, which closed down the original location. Later, Upson-Walton became part of Muncy Industries, which still retains the Upson-Walton name for manufacturing and branding products. In 2021, a company affiliated with the Cleveland-based developer GBX Group bought four buildings on the east bank of the Flats, including the yellow-brick Upson-Walton/Arhaus Furniture Building, three of which are on the waterfront of the Cuyahoga River – though the developer is remaining mum on its plans for the space.
Samsel Supply Co., which for decades owned a slew of property along Old River Road, sold the buildings to companies associated with GBX Group, a developer that specializes in working on historic projects. They include the Samsel warehouse and office building at 1285 Old River Road, which has 109,845 square feet, two smaller buildings directly south, and the Upson-Walton Co. Building across the street at 1294-1310 Old River Road. The transactions were first reported by the Cleveland Business Journal, a sister publication of cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer. They took place on Dec. 7. Cuyahoga County property records do not list the sale prices, and GBX spokesman Phil Winton declined to reveal the price. The properties combined are valued at more than $2.8 million, according to county records.
Winton was coy about the future of the properties. He said in an email that GBX would notify news outlets when plans are finalized, which will be by the end of March. He said, however, that the buildings will not be razed and will instead find new uses while retaining their historic character. Winton also said the buildings will “complement” how other buildings are used on the east bank. The area in the past couple of decades has transformed into a hub for restaurants and nightlife. Today, the Upson-Walton Company Building has undergone redevelopment and is used for riverfront creative open concept loft office and retail space.

Trains Down South: The Sequel
In doing research after my previous trip to Mankato, I discovered that I had missed some stuff. Some very cool stuff. And so, I headed back south.
My target was one of CHS's switcher locomotives. They have a big oilseed processing facility on the west side of town, along with a tank car washing facility, where I was supposed to find my little engine. My target was supposed to be parked on the stub track to the left of the picture. Rather than a unique orange locomotive, I found a boring blue one. CHS had recently exchanged their fleet of leased switchers for two of their own, and the old ones were nowhere to be found... or so I thought.
At the time of my visit, part of Mankato's downtown was undergoing a repaving project. The road that was closed just so happened to be my way out. I didn't feel like getting stuck in traffic, so I tried to find another way out. One wrong turn later, I randomly stumbled across this old Chicago & Northwestern bay-window caboose, adorned in a custom Mankato Tourism paint scheme. It dates back to 1957 and previously sat near the town's former train station, being moved to this parking lot near the riverfront in the early 2010s. The coolest finds are the ones you don't expect.
Since I was in the area I figured I'd get a proper shot of the Plymouth switcher buried in the weeds. It still isn't great, but better than nothing. I also flew over to the adjacent scrapyard to see their current switcher, and also found a 1947-built flatcar.
ALTX 601 has served the scrapyard since the early 2010s. It's a very heavily rebuilt EMD NW2, only recognizable by the step-down ramp from the nose to the cab. It was originally built for the Peoria & Pekin Union Railway (they had the greenish-grey paint), and later went on to work for the Tazewell & Peoria Railroad (responsible for the blue/white stripes along the bottom edge). The flatcar is a General Steel Industries design, notable for its unique bulkhead walls.
While I was turning onto the main road out of town, something in the distance caught my eye. I saw the distant, sun-lit silhouette of a great machine parked atop a hill, no doubt a remnant of a long-gone limestone quarry.
I promptly found a place to launch my drone and flew over. What a cool machine! I believe it dates back to the 1960s, but I can't find *any* information about it online. Not one bit.
Here's what I do know. The site was once a limestone quarry, one of many in the area. It started operations in the '50s or '60s, eventually becoming a demolition landfill which was capped in the 1990s or early 2000s. I emailed who I believe to be the owner, asking about getting some closer-up pictures, but I haven't received a response yet.
While I was driving back north, a miracle occurred. Sitting on a siding near the town of Kasota were three small, unique switcher locomotives; the ones I had driven all this way to see.
IRSS 1237 is an EMD SW10. By the mid-1970s, the Union Pacific's fleet of switcher locomotives, all built between the late 1930s and early 1950s, were getting rather old. Many had developed issues and the less problematic ones were becoming too expensive to maintain. UP had a choice: throw out all of the old switchers and buy new ones, or rebuild them into something more modern. They chose the latter. And thus, the SW10 was born. 65 EMD switchers made up of TR5As, SW7s (what 1237 started as), and SW9s were selected for rebuild. Upgrades included a newer 645-type engine, larger electrically-driven radiator fans, and a large sandbox on the front of the nose. This space would usually be occupied by the radiator, which was moved to the roof, creating the unique & instantly-recognizable hump.
The two other switchers were ProRail 100 and LUNX 1105. ProRail was the company that did switching for CHS in Mankato, shutting down sometime in 2024 and causing CHS to bring in their own locomotives. The fate of these three is unknown, but they seem quite well maintained and I expect they'll find work elsewhere.
