Saw your tags on the art you just posted about surgery scar tattoos and I def am planning on getting a tattoo of a line of pansies along one of my scars (because I am a pansy)
YO I just saw this message, sorry about that @indielowercase! I’m guessing you mean this post with this image: (beautiful art by @iliothermia)
I love your pansy idea, and the thing about having it just along one of your scars is super cool because it totally embraces the fact of the scars themselves. I try (but it’s hard) not to think of my tattoo plan as just a cover up and more of a way to honor my history and reclaiming my body. That said, I do think I want both of my scars done. I haven’t done it because I just can’t find the right design. I don’t want a full chest piece, yet I worry that if I tattoo over only the scars it will actually create an illusion of boob shadow like Felicia in Priscilla Queen of the Desert:
plus placement of something narrow under the pecs only seems awkward to me, at least in what I can visualize? idk, that painting above was the very first one I’d seen where it looked pretty natural, moving with the lines of the body in a way that looks like it was actually designed for that placement instead of weirdly shifted. I need to do some thinking!
I adore art of naturalistic plants like this piece by Ukrainian artist Rita “Rit Kit” Zolotukhina, and that idea appeals to me:
My wife once suggested using a plant that can grow from a cutting, which is genius!!! Such a beautiful thought
idk, if anyone has any thoughts please PLEASE share them! I don’t know much about tattoos and this is a deeply personal and important question for me. If you have any comments about art design or placement or anything at all, I’d love to talk to you

Rita Zolotukhina
This tattoo artist draws direct inspiration from plants and flowers. She will take a cutting of a specific botanical and then use it as the stencil, instead of doing the traditional method of recreating the plant by drawing it out first.
I think this method is very unique and cuts out the process of drawing out a stencil, making the tattoo more true to the cutting. This makes every single tattoo unique as no one will ever have that specific cutting tattooed on them.
This tattoo artist inspired me to look into the physical flowers/plants that i’m inspired by and see if I can work from them directly.

Flowers on a Light Box
Photographs were a inspired by tattoo artist Rita Zolotukhina. She uses plants and nature as a stencil for her designs which was then incorporated into my own as a more digital & visual design. This was later an image projected onto a model.

No nature tattoos are quite as stunning as those created by Ukrainian tattoo artist Rita Zolotukhina (AKA Rit Kit on Instagram). Rita uses real leaves and flowers to design true-to-life tattoos. She dips her found leaf or flower in stencil ink, places it on her client’s skin, then traces the impression with her tattoo gun. http://metro.co.uk/2016/05/03/this-artist-uses-real-leaves-and-flowers-to-create-stunning-nature-inspired-tattoos-5856573/#ixzz4h98MoovE

CREATIVE INFLUENCE
Creative influence can broadly be defined as the influential forces which inspire creative practices. There are many diversities of inspiration to each individual, personally I am inspired creatively at least once every day. This can be found in the most unexpected places, from within myself or from other people. Many agree that ‘to “make one’s name” means making one’s mark, achieving recogniton...of one’s difference..’ (Bourdieu in Harrison & Wood 2003, p. 1021) is the way to become your own creative influence- something of paramount importance in a society which is constantly creating.
Rita Zolotukhina is an artist who has directly translated her inspiration to art, using flora as the material and the influence.

Rita Zolotukhina
Form: Portraits of botanical material in tattoo form on willing individuals.
Process: Zolotukhina first takes plants and flowers and then dips them in transfer ink. She then places the plants directly on the individual getting the tattoo and using the outline left behind and the plant itself, she then tattoos a portrait of that plant. Going into the process neither Rita Zolotukhina or the individual receiving the tattoo know how exactly the tattoo will turn out because it is a live plant.
Content: While these are portraits of plants, they are also portraits of Rita Zolotukhina. She created this process because this is an important part of what she does daily.

“Botanical Fingerprints” Are The Most Beautiful Tattoos You’ve Never Heard Of
Ukranian artist Rita Zolotukhina has come up with an incredible way to create “botanical fingerprint” tattoos that are quite possibly the prettiest ink we’ve ever seen. жаÑмин #liveleaftattoo #jasmine #floraltattoo #botanicaltattoo #ritkit #ritkittattoo A photo posted by ð¿tattoo and Illustrationð¿ (@rit.kit) on Apr 17, 2016 at 7:37am PDT By dipping real leaves and flowers into stencil…

@indielowercase, I did get your reply I’ve just been so swamped with work I couldn’t answer right away! I’m so sorry
The sword fern tattoos sound SUPER RAD. Is it kind of like this?
( tattoo by Ella Coose in Berkeley, CA)
I absolutely love the placement! I can totally see how the line of the plant can be made to follow the curve of scars, which is awesome. I do kind of worry that the placement under the pecs would seem awkward. Like... it looks so good right at the clavicle and is obviously meant for that spot. I hope that under the pec wouldn’t draw too much obvious-cover-up attention, but that’s probably me with my trans goggles on assuming that everyone will pick up on my context clues. My favorite tattoo artist at the moment is Rita “Rit Kit” Zolotukhina in Kiev, who uses ink imprints of real plants to make incredibly naturalistic art:
I could see maybe having both clavicle/upper chest AND under the pecs in the form of climbing vines or woven plants, but then that turns into kind of a whole-chest piece which is not really my goal. idk, this kind of indecision is why I’ve been sitting on this idea for literally the last 5 years! :p
seriously though guys, please reach out if you know tattoo stuff! Let’s crowdsource this design. If you were creating a tattoo for a dryad prince, what would you draw?

Flower Pressings
As the main theme I am looking into is the indigenous tribal idea of ‘nature as a map’, I decided to look into native plants in England, as that is where I am from. The more research I did, the more I realised that there are some plants that I presumed were English but turned out that they were cross bred with foreign plants or were introduced from different countries. I then selected a few native English plants and flowers that I would look into. These flowers would be the inspiration for my designs. English botanicals reimagined as tattoo designs.
After looking into the plants I wanted to work from, I decided to go and find/buy them so I could work from them directly. Similar to the methods of Rita Zolotukhina. After managing to find them, I decided to try and preserve them, just like the immmortlisation of them if they were on skin. I used flower pressing to do this.
I took the most complete parts of the flowers and leaves and cut them. This worked out problematic for the Dianthus flowers as the petals just fell off so instead of pressing them front facing I had to do it side on. Then I left them in kitchen roll between heavy books to dry out. Once they were dry, I put them into a flower press, which is essentially just two boards with a screw in each end and a nut that tightens the boards together. Once I did this, I scanned them in, front and back. I did this as I wanted to show the whole structure of the plants.
They all came out very well and I only had a few small, fragile bits fall off. Using these I either want to put them into a book next to the designs they inspired or somehow layer the design on top of them.
