Why Green Season is Secretly the Best Time to Visit Costa Rica
Tumblr media
May through October is known in Costa Rica as the Green Season; technically their "winter". Our beach house, Casa Las Brisas, is located in Playa Flamingo on the NW Pacific coast in the province of Guanacaste. Although this area is known for having sunny, warm days year round, there are occasional late afternoon rains this time year. After almost six months of dry, hot weather with no rain at all, the plants and trees all soak up the first rains in early May and turn from scrubby brown to lush green. The weather becomes a bit cooler, with highs in the mid-80's instead of upper 90's. The beaches have cool breezes that keep the humidity lower than in the interior rainforests.  Pure delight!
In addition to the perfect temps and low humidity, there are several other benefits to traveling to Costa Rica during Green Season. Rental rates are lower, and availability is much better for planning your vacation, especially when the kids are on Summer Break. Adventure tours and private guides rates may also be lower during Green Season. Restaurants will generally have seating without a long wait. You will also find parks, trails and even beaches are not crowded, and sometimes you will have them all to yourself. The quieter it is the more you can enjoy nature.
Since it rains more frequently, rivers are fuller which makes waterfalls spectacular. One of our favorite spots is Rio Celeste. Two rivers meet and a certain type of mineral turns the water a vivid blue. There are trails and gorgeous waterfalls. Rains also make the white water rafting more thrilling. There are Class III and IV in Canas, located about 1.5 hour drive from Casa Las Brisas. This is a prime destination for experienced rafters as well as guided tours on slower rivers for the less adventurous. For more favorite spots that we highly recommend please visit our Top 10 List
Full disclosure, mid to late September can be a bit more rainy but still has glorious mornings;  October can have daily downpours and really restrict outdoor activities (except for sitting under palapas at a beach bar). Our very first trip to Costa Rica was in mid-September for our anniversary. We had fun filled sunny days but each evening we would hang out at the hotel bar chatting with the other guests; then take a bottle back to our covered patio and listen to the gentle rain hit the palm fronds and banyan leaves, which is ideal for lulling you to sleep.

Numbers, slumbers and the trip’s wonders
When we came back from the last big trip, quite a few people asked us if we knew how far we'd travelled, how many places we'd stayed and various others. So this time I decided to keep a record of what we've been up to. Nerdy, yes... interesting? We'll see.
Tumblr media
Getting around
Most of the time, the humble bus has been our friend - over the last year or so, we've taken 138 of them. Buses have come in many forms, from fancy pants Cruz del Sur buses in Peru that are a bit like planes with wheels, to the overnight one we took to Rurrenabaque in Bolivia that was basically a shed with an engine and a few seats. In total, we've racked up a total of 660 hours on buses, with the longest being 22 hours from El Chalten to El Bolson in Argentina.
Tumblr media
We've taken a few other choice modes of transport - three flights, a fair few boats and even a motorbike-powered mini train thing into the Colombian jungle. Add in all these, and you get a grand total of 823.5 hours spent just getting from A to B - or just over a month solid in other words.
Tumblr media
We've had a crack at working out the distances, too. In our 293 days in South America, we racked up 30399km, while Central and Mexico worked out at 87 days and 7542km. Add in the flights from London to Rio via Rome, and back from Mexico via the US and Canada, and that gives a grand total of 57611km and 856.5 hours on the road, over the water and in the air over the course of 380 days.
Staying the night
As the trip is officially our honeymoon, lots of people are keen to know where we've been sleeping. Dorms, mostly, is the answer. Like the buses, there's plenty of room in that definition, from bunk-filled shacks on the beach in Uruguay to super-fancy minimalist pod-style efforts in Guatemala. All up, we've spent 216 nights living it up in dorms.
Tumblr media
We also worked out that we spent 3 nights in hammocks, 11 nights in tents - how horrific - and we've also done 22 night buses, plus the out and back plane rides. How romantic.
The best bits
Top three countries Mexico - we saved the best for last and Mexico delivered in spades. It's a perfect combination of people, sights and food (ding-ding-ding)! We have probably never travelled in a friendlier country.
Tumblr media
Colombia - everyone told us we'd love it and they weren't wrong. Colombia is a country transformed from the dark days of the early 90s. We loved the jungle, the people and the ruins. Shame about the food though.
Tumblr media
Nicaragua - this little surprise ticket was our favourite in Central America. The landscape is full of lakes and volcanoes, distances are wonderfully short and of course, there's Flor de Cana in bucketloads.
Tumblr media
Top three views The top of the Union Pass, Peru - this trip has been rich in incredible scenery so this top spot has been hard earned. But this pointy-peak, turquoise laguna vista is absolutely breathtaking. Literally, as it turns out, as the top of the pass is at 4750m.
Tumblr media
The Fitzroy Range, Argentina - we waited four days for this incredible range to make its appearance and it was 100% worth it. The Patagonia of your dreams.
Tumblr media
Two Brothers, Brazil - there are many wonderful views in Rio de Janeiro  but this one, which is just 40 minutes from the top of Vidigal favela, allows you to see the famous cityscape without the crowds.
Tumblr media
Top three cities Mexico City - right up there with any of the big hitters we've visited, the DF has it all. Beautiful light at 2000m, Aztec ruins and a street food scene to rival anywhere in the world makes this a city I'd live in, let alone return to.
Tumblr media
Rio de Janeiro - what a place to start our trip! It's just as amazing as it looks on the telly but it's also full of little secrets.
Tumblr media
Buenos Aires - everyone loves it, and for good reason. Europe meets North America with a healthy dose of Latin vibes in BA. And the steak is unforgettable.
Tumblr media
Top three hikes The Santa Cruz, Peru - in a trip that seemed at times to be nothing but hiking, this one reigns supreme. It's cold and it's hard but it's the best one we've ever done.
Tumblr media
The Lost City, Colombia - oh so sweaty. The ruins are really fantastic and the trek itself is as brilliant as it is challenging.
Tumblr media
Cathedral Peak to Refugio Frey, Argentina - one of the best day hikes we've ever done. The cable car ride at the beginning allows you to get straight on with the views over to Tronador and the rock scramble is great fun.
Tumblr media
Top three swims Finca Paradaiso, Guatemala - possibly the only place on earth where a hot water waterfall lands in a cold river pool. The setting is gorgeous and we had it to ourselves, making it the best shower we've ever had.
Tumblr media
Dzitnup cenotes, Mexico - it's really scary to swim in a very dark pool in a cave, but you really have to give it a go. There are fish, and they do nibble, but this is a swimming experience we'll never forget.
Tumblr media
Random swimming hole, Uruguay - Pablo the Horse Whisperer took us here on our trusty steeds, Carmen and Dave. I'm not sure what it was called but it's in the Quebrada de los Cuervos National Park. It was so beautiful I went in in my clothes.
Tumblr media
Conclusion What. A. Year. This trip has taken us from Rio de Janeiro to Mexico City via some absolutely unforgettable sights. We've had the pleasure of travelling fairly slowly and almost all by land and this meant we could enjoy watching the continent change gradually over borders, mountain ranges and vast plains. It took a while to save up the cash for 54 weeks of non-stop exploring and there's a lot we could have done with that money. I can't think of anything that would have provided us with so many experiences, challenges and discoveries. Most of all, I can't think of anything that would have been more fun.
Over and out... until next time.

The Day I Was Kicked Out of a Panamanian Village…
New Post has been published on https://www.dowhat.xyz/the-day-i-was-kicked-out-of-a-panamanian-village/
The Day I Was Kicked Out of a Panamanian Village…
Navigating the Darien’s Rio Turia
Boca de Cupe, Panama
After traveling through the Darien Gap by piragua canoe to visit a remote jungle village, I was forced to leave when security forces kicked me out.
The Darien is a swath of roadless wilderness between Panama Colombia that’s full of mystery intrigue. For years it’s been known as a haven for criminals, drug smugglers, and anti-government guerrilla groups.
Understandably most travelers decide to avoid the area, sailing around or flying over it instead.
But after speaking with a few individuals who had recently made the journey inside, I determined that it was safe enough to attempt a trip. Panama’s elite border security force Senafront has built up a strong presence in much of the region.
While the Darien Gap is by no means danger-free, it’s safer than it was just a few years ago.
My morning started in the village of El Real. I said goodbye to my Brazilian friend Gabriel as he hitched a ride to Yaviza via canoe to catch a local bus back to Panama City.
Unfortunately he did not have the proper permissions to continue further with me.
From here on it would just be myself and Isaac — a local guide from the Kuna indigenous tribe.
Indigenous Stilt Homes Along the River
Traveling Through the Darien Jungle
We began loading our skinny 25-foot long wooden piragua canoe with gas supplies for the 5 hour trip up the Turia River to the village of Boca de Cupe. The simple craft used a small outboard motor to power us through the river’s current.
Of course it was raining when we finally pulled out onto the water. October is the heart of the rainy season here.
Rain had been a constant companion while trekking through the wilderness of Darien National Park for the past 3 days. We were well accustomed to it at this point.
Our piragua cut through the wet humid air making it’s way deeper into the jungle over a highway of silty brown water.
Traditional thatched-roof homes built by the Emberá people were perched on stilts along the riverbank.
Local indigenous families floated past us in their own piraguas loaded full of plantain bananas, the primary cash crop in this remote region of the world.
Wounaan Children of Vista Alegre
Police Checkpoints
We were forced to stop at Vista Alegre, a small Wounaan tribal village with a riverside security checkpoint. It was a simple military bunker made from sandbags and camouflage netting.
Hard looking men with automatic weapons took my passport and letter of permission, trying to decide what to do with me.
A posse of local Wounaan children came out to inspect me along with the soldiers — gringos are a rarity in these parts.
It was then that some children noticed my piragua canoe had broken loose from the dock, and was quickly floating down the swollen Turia river without us! 😯
We raced through the mud while one boy actually jumped into the swift moving river and saved the boat (and all my gear) before it was lost.
After pulling it back upstream and securing it to a dock, the soldiers finally told me that we’d been approved and would be allowed to continue on our journey.
Senafront Soldiers in the Darien Gap
Town of Boca de Cupe
For 5 long hours we slowly pushed our way up the winding Rio Turia in the pouring rain — passing by the villages of Unión de Chocó, Yape, and Capeti. But my discomfort was lessened as I listened to the songs of exotic birds searched along the river’s muddy banks for Caimans (part of the alligator/crocodile family).
Eventually our destination came into view.
The town of Boca de Cupe is located on the Turia River, about 20 miles from the Colombian border. Some 30% of it’s inhabitants are Colombian refugees.
In the 1900’s Boca de Cupe was an integral part of the British-owned Cana gold mines, where ore was transported through the jungle via single-gage railway before getting shipped downriver to the coast.
But prior to British control, the Cana mines were owned by the Spanish in the 1700’s. British French pirates frequently ransacked the very lucrative gold producing area.
Streets of Boca de Cupe
A History of Violence
In more recent times, the area around Boca de Cupe has been a hotbed of Colombian guerrilla activity. There are good reasons why travelers have avoided the Darien Gap region over the last 20 years.
In 1993 three American missionaries were abducted from a nearby village and later murdered.
In 1996 twenty armed men women attacked Boca de Cupe, stole supplies from the health clinic, and kidnapped a local store owner.
In 1997 the female commander of a M56 Colombian guerrilla force led an attack on the town. They took supplies, money, and weapons after burning the police station to the ground.
In 2000 the British travelers Tom Hart Dyke Paul Winder were kidnaped by Colombian FARC guerrillas while searching the Darien jungle for rare orchids. After being held for 9 months deep in the wilderness, they were set free.
In 2003 National Geographic writer Robert Young Pelton and two others were taken after 4 local indigenous men were murdered in the nearby village of Paya by the AUC paramilitary group. The Americans were eventually released in Colombia a week later.
All these incidents and more began to humiliate the Panamanian government, who eventually stepped up efforts to control their lawless wild backyard.
These days Boca de Cupe is full of Senafront border soldiers dressed in military fatigues, patrolling the town’s concrete pathways armed with assault rifles.
Soldiers on Patrol
Meeting with the Comandante
We pulled our piragua up to an embankment and began unloading gear as a soldier quietly looked on. When finished, he escorted us through town past dozens of curious onlookers. Time to check in with the Comandante of the Senafront base.
Inside the fortified building I spied a giant .50 caliber machine gun leaning against a wall..
Technically Senafront isn’t a military organization, as Panama’s standing army was dissolved after the 1989 US invasion. Officially they are tasked with protecting the country’s border, and are actually considered police.
But Senafront’s security forces all wear camouflage uniforms, often live deep inside the jungle, carry large automatic weapons, and conduct military-style offensives against Colombia’s guerrilla groups.
Sure, maybe they don’t have the power to invade another country, but they are definitely unlike any other police force I’ve ever seen…
The commander spoke some English, which up to this point had been very rare here inside the Darien. I explained that my plan was to spend the night in Boca de Cupe, and I had all the proper paperwork.
He would make some radio calls to headquarters back in Panama City to confirm.
Reluctantly Leaving Boca de Cupe
Kicked Out of Town!
Isaac and I checked ourselves into a cheap dormitory where I changed and cleaned up. As soon as we went looking for a place to eat, some local “women of the night” quickly found us and wanted to know if we needed any company.
They were obviously amused to have a white guy in town.
We brushed them off and found a cantina that served food. This place was filled with sketchy looking characters. Younger guys with fancy clothes jewelry that didn’t quite fit this poor remote jungle town.
Drug smuggling from Colombia to Panama is still very rampant within the Darien… but I couldn’t be sure, and didn’t feel comfortable asking them what they did for work.
After a few $0.60 beers and a $2 meal, it was time to head back to the base. It was there I learned that I would not be allowed to spend the evening in Boca de Cupe. 🙁
Reason: They were afraid I’d get robbed in the middle of the night.
Unfortunately this meant we must leave town immediately, before the evening river curfew took effect.
A curfew is in place to make it more difficult for drug smugglers paramilitary groups to operate on the river at night.
There was no talking my way out of this one. After a long uncomfortable five-hour river journey through the jungle in the pouring rain just to get here, I’d now have to turn around and do it all over again to go back!
We reluctantly loaded our gear into the piragua, fired up the outboard motor, and left the village. The town of Boca de Cupe would ultimately be the furthest I could get inside the notorious Darien Gap.
But I’m happy I went, as it was quite an experience. 😀
