THREAS*ROSA PARKS 01: LOCAL!
Tumblr media

10 UK Rappers and MCs That You Need to Know About
UK rappers and MCs are everywhere. The friends who used to wince when I played grime are now in love with Stormzy and I hear Lock Doh played in the main rooms of clubs more than House Every Weekend (trust me, that’s saying something).
But the success of those at the top of their game wouldn’t be possible without MCs tracing grime and UK rap back to its roots.
From skippy grime and heavy baseline to melodic hooks and trap beats, rap and grime is no longer a pigeonholed music genre.
Check out our pick of 10 artists who prove the UK rap and grime scene is so damn exciting

  MIST
Tumblr media
Source: djsemtex
MIST is your go to for catchy hooks and trap beats produced by  Steel Bangelz. Citing his hometown of Birmingham as his inspiration for the mixed cultural influences in his music, (his hit Karlas Back is a play on the Punjabi word ‘Kala’ meaning black person) he has a massive British-Asian following, performing at the BBC Asian Network show in February.
Every track from his first EP, M I S to the T EP (2016) is a student club banger, and his upcoming UK sold out tour is set to be huge.
youtube
  Big Zuu
Tumblr media
Source: rwd mag
Big Zuu is a rising grime star in grime scene, but really caught our attention with his lyrics over Dave’s piano version of Ghetto Kyote (see video below).
The West London MC is known for his lyrically clever freestyles and has been firing out new material in the last 6 months, spitting alongside his cousin AJ Tracey on Rinse FM’s Grime Show and his legendary Fire in the Booth freestyles.
His February release Ain’t No Joke, produced by Scam (a grime producer to watch this year) and featuring Drifter is set to make big waves in the grime scene.
youtube
  Cadet
Tumblr media
Source: rwd mag
Cadet gained national recognition with his Slut freestyle in mid-2015.
His gutsy Letter to Krept has also racked up nearly 3 million views on YouTube (those expecting a diss track were surprised at the raw honesty of Cadet’s lyrics, detailing how his cousin Krept had hurt him and at the same time helped to propel his career).
Taking pride of place on the Wireless and Reading/Leeds line-ups, it won’t be long before the self-proclaimed ‘underrated legend’ can drop the his ‘underrated’ status.
youtube
  Big Tobz
Tumblr media
Source: trapped magazine
After hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons in 2015 when he used the Walthamstow station knife attack to promote his music (completely bizarre), he’s overcome the bad press and is beginning to establish himself as a top UK rap artist.
Corn, his track with Cadet, will have you in stitches, and is deep tone and playful lyrics make him a big hit with the ladies. Just watch the fan video for his version of J Hus’s Calling Me if you don’t believe us.
youtube
  Stefflon Don
Tumblr media
Source: Vice
Dubbed the ‘British Nicki Minaj,’ it’s already been a big year for Stefflon Don, an MC who combines UK rap with bashment.
She’s made a name for herself on the BBC’s Sound of 2017 hot-list and her mixtape Real Ting, which features big names such as Jeremih and Donae’o, has seen her blow up in both the UK and in Holland, where spent most of her childhood.
The first single from the mixtape, Real Ting, was remixed with a verse from Giggs and the latest single 16 Shots has already hit over 2 million YouTube views. We’re excited for what’s next.
youtube
  YGG
Tumblr media
Source: rwd magazine
In a genre that seems to be full of trap and American-inspired beats, YGG’s (short for ‘You Get Grime’) sound is unmistakably British.
The three London MCs, Lyrical Strally, PK and Saint, made a name for themselves with their hard-hitting bars on radio sets and freestyles.  Their first single Okay sounds like it could be straight out of the bassline heyday of ‘08/’09, and last year’s Don’t Talk Like That has the same sharp lyrics and energetic flow of early grime.
Hailed as grime’s next best thing by RWD, FactMag, ID and Fabric, we’re hoping the people will fall in love with their old-school grime sound as much as we have.
youtube
Elf Kid
Tumblr media
Elf Kid started as part of Lewisham’s The Square, a grime collective known for their cult classic Lewisham McDeez, (with the music video filmed outside a Lewisham McDonalds, no less).
After founder Novelist left the crew, Elf Kid stepped up, producing timeless grime track Golden Boy, his energetic flow over The Square producer Lolingo’s remix of Amerie’s 1 Thing.
It’s easy to pick Elf Kid out instantly amongst other MCs (just check out The Square’s recent freestyle on Sian Anderson’s 1Xtra show).
As part of ASOS Supports Talent, Elf Kid recently flew to Ethiopia to shoot the video for Reload That, his infectious new track that promises to “take grime back to the motherland” – watch the video below.
youtube
  Avelino
Tumblr media
Source: MTV
After being co-signed by Wretch 32 and releasing a collaborative mixtape Young Fire, Old Flame, Avelino has gone from success to success.
His storytelling mirrors that of Wretch’s, but he’s more than held his own with his latest releases.
His 2016 EP FYO (Fuck Your Opinion) was supported by Rinse FM and his latest track Energy features two of the biggest names in grime, Skepta and Stormzy. Our favourite Avelino track is Late Nights in the 15, a chilled rap record with reflective lyrics on the struggles of growing up in Tottenham.
Catch Avelino at Creamfields, Leeds/Reading and London’s XOYO this summer.
youtube
  Izzie Gibbs
Tumblr media
Source: mn2s
Hailing from Northampton, Izzie Gibbs is proof that grime isn’t just a London thing.
He’s been co-signed by Stormzy, recently appearing alongside him on Sir Spyro’s Grime Show on Rinse FM.
Izzie has a fiery, old-school grime sound which has deservedly won him Best Newcomer at the UK Urban Music Awards 2016. His Jutsu EP features Mandem and Bark, two high energy tracks that will have your gun fingers up in a second.
His 2017 releases, Think About It and Lava Lamp, have taken a surprising turn away from grime and towards a slower rap sound, which we think Izzie does well, but we’re hoping he gets back to the gritty grime sound that blew up his career.
youtube
  Dialect
Tumblr media
Source: the city talking
Dialect is the first MC from Leeds to really break into the grime scene.
His Don’t Flop clashes (vs. Raptor Warhurst and Bilzar) have proven him as a top battle MC. He performed alongside grime legends such as Wiley, JME and D Double E when Eskimo Dance took on Leeds last year, and (in our opinion) smashed London MC Opium in Lord of the Mics 6.
With a huge number of clashes and freestyles under his belt, we’re hoping for more material from Dialect this year. We’ll be the first to cop an EP.

Now signed to Sound Pellegrino (Paris) Joe has appeared on SND.PE Vol 3, 4 & 5 as well as his own EP “EXEP”, which stands for “EXtra Extended Play”. As a testament to their immediate charm, tracks: “Groove-script” and “Zip” from the release have both been licensed by KENZO for the unveiling of their recent capsule collections.

Eclectic, Electronic & Exuberant: The Enchantment of Grime
Tumblr media
Known for it’s rapid, belligerent beats, grime music has created a name for itself in the international music industry. Don’t know what defines grime, exactly? Well

Grime is a music genre influenced by other significant genres as well as subgenres of music. Grime was developed from two electronic music types that are well-known in the United Kingdom, UK Garage (which is a subgenre of House music) and Jungle. It is also heavily influenced by Jamaican “dancehall”, ragga, Hip-Hop and African and Carribean instruments.
When “Grime” first emerged onto the music scene, there wasn’t an official name for the music type yet. ‘Why?’ you may ask
Let’s take a look at the birth of Grime.
Tumblr media
It’s the early 2000’s in London’s East-end. A unique genre of music with no name is becoming popular through Pirate Radio Stations, such as Rinse FM, DĂ©jĂ  vu, Freeze 92.7 and Raw Mission. A pirate radio station is often called a “bootleg radio,” “clandestine radio” or “free radio” because it broadcasts music without a valid license.
Tumblr media
Dizzee Rascal
youtube
Since “grime” was only available on these stations, no one had ever knew what to call it. The first songs to light the fire of Grime was “I Luv U” by one of the founders, Dizzee Rascal and “Boys Love Girls” by Kano.
Tumblr media
Wiley
youtube
Over a few years, Grime still had no name. It was referred to as “8-bar” because of its 8-count beats, Nu Shape, Sublow and finally Eskibeat. It was known as Eskibeat for a while after another founder of Grime. The song that sparked the title “Eskibeat” by Wiley.
Tumblr media
Skepta
youtube
Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, Kano and Lethal are the first artists to introduce Grime to “mainstream media.” Other artists include Ghetts, Jme, Novelist, Stormzy (who recently came out with a soung with Kehlani) and Skepta (who appeard on Drake’s new album, “More Life” and has also worked with Pharrell). The Grime scene is also filled with crews, such as: Boy Better know, Newham Generals, Roll Deep & Ruff Sqwad.
When you first listen to grime, you wouldn’t automatically see it’s relation to Hip-Hop. However, their resemblance goes beyond the surface. Hip-Hop was created in the Bronx by the urban youth in the low socioeconomic class. Their lyrics mirrored poverty, their everyday struggles, social justice issues and the problems they faced as people of color. In a similar way, grime was concepted from the same issues. Grime was created by sixteen-year-old boys (youth)  from the “lower” ends of London. Their lyrics often depict the urban life and emphasizes a sense of community. Their truth reflects the struggles that not many hear of or see on a daily basis.
Another way grime is similar to Hip-Hop is through rapping. We all know about rap battles in Hip-Hop. We’ve all seen 106&Park Ultimate Freestyle Friday, Grindtime and Wild N’ Out on American Television. These rap battle shows and leagues have influenced other rap battle leagues to Canada, Asia and even Europe. However, in Grime, this is not just an ordinary rap battle. It’s a CLASH.
youtube
youtube
In a clash, two competitors go head-to-head. The main goal is one-up your opponent and “attack” them (figuratively speaking). Through their fast-paced freestyling, competitors show off their linguistic skills and “quick-wittedness.”
I first heard Grime in 2015 and I’ve noticed how popular it has become, especially in the U.S. I actually really enjoy listening to it and I hope this blog post inspires you to too :)

Quels sont les visages de l’ascension du rap made in UK ?
Tumblr media

Little simz

MEZ - M1 EP REVIEW Date 27th July Posted by Adam Dee Mez - M1 EP Nottingham's very own Mez has dropped his brand new EP called ‘M1 EP’, and it has started to take the grime scene by storm, linking with some big names. A well timed release, after both Kano's and Skepta’s albums took over, the spotlight is now on the Nottingham crew's frontman. Speaking to Sian Anderson on her 1xtra show last Wednesday, Mez told us how he linked up with producer Davinche at Rinse then turned one song into one project, all thanks to Sir Spyro who said they needed to do a track together. The first track is an intro where it sounds as if Mez gets into his car and joins the M1 motorway. The second track starts off with ‘sounds of the uncle, sounds of Davinche’, before the high energy beat kicks in. The first track the duo made, so it was only fitting to have it at the beginning. Next up is ‘Lex Luther’, featuring no other than Stormzy. Arguably the biggest name in the scene right now, it was only right having him on the Davinche track that sounds like it was from the Channel U days. Following Stormzy’s verse, Mez doesn't hold back with his aggressive flow, but you could say he's not a bad guy like Lex Luther! After that banger, one of the biggest breakthrough acts in the past year, AJ Tracey, delivers his intro before the heavy track ‘Shoulda Known Better' drops. A well crafted hook by AJ is followed by Harvey's So Solid inspired verses. Towards the end, you can't help but turn up and skank to the rest of the beat. In the final track of the EP, Mez is back off to his hometown after linking Stormy and AJ Tracey, with ‘London 2 Notz’ featuring singer Allana Verde. Allana’s voice combined with Mez’s flow, makes this one a certified banger in it's own right. A much slower track, but a perfect one to end on in what is a big project by one of the best producers and upcoming spitters. We look forward to seeing how this springboards Mez after his unique freestyles on 1xtra and Rinse fm, his magnum freestyle and his track ‘Madting’ with Bonkaz. Over to you Uncle

Skilf Drops His Brand New Album 'Second Thought', A Distinctive Amalgamation Of His Urban / Dance Music Influences
Skilf is a London based Rapper/Singer, who uses vivid storytelling and heartfelt lyrics in his unique brand of Urban music. From a young age Skilf was no stranger to the stage: a child actor performing at theatres and even starring in a full feature TV film. His passion for music was sparked a few years later as he started listening to Hip Hop and Garage, studying other rappers' wordplay and the art of rhyming. Skilf built his name by playing numerous house parties, open mic nights and pirate radio stations, championing an expansive sound and becoming known for his charismatic delivery and ability to morph his rhymes to suit varied tempos. Skilf started getting booked for club nights, university shows and regional festivals. Since then he has shared stages with the likes of Pendulum, The Freestylers, Ghostface Killah (Wu Tang Clan), Tim Westwood, Chipmunk, Skream, Benga and Sam & The Womp to name a few. More recently Skilf has begun to take his talents to international audiences, playing high profile gigs in destinations such as: Shanghai, Berlin, Kavos and Cadiz. As a creative partner, Skilf has been able to work alongside a number of music legends in their own right including: Adamski, UK Garage Pioneer MC Neat, Ashley Beedle, Cut La Roc, Youngman, Agent X, The Nextroom, Genesis Elijah, Serocee and Dizraeli. In 2013 Skilf teamed up with Irish production duo John Gibbons & Scimon Tist and made 'Colder' which received extensive radio play and reached the top 40 in the official Republic of Ireland charts. A balanced performer, Skilf is equally comfortable putting in work in the studio as he is toasting the dance; 'Original Visions' was Skilf's first independently released album and it quickly led to airplay on stations such as 1Xtra, BBC Introducing, BBC Asian Network and Rinse FM. Fast forward to 2016 Skilf's latest musical concoction 'Second Thought promises to be something both original and insightful. A nod towards a more Dance based sound with driving synth melodies, faster and heavier club style beats, dirty basslines and energetic vocal delivery. It includes 12 original tracks, a string of singles released over the last 2 years and 5 remixes. Skilf is a man with a plan and a clear musical vision, channeling bold lyrics and lucid songwriting to create a truly unique Urban sound. "Skilf stands out from the crowd with well crafted beats and strong wordplay" RWD Mag "An exciting talent breaking barriers with his own agenda" Clash Magazine "If I had to tip one act for the top it would be Skilf" Hip Hop Connection "A respectable talent-assured artist with an evident hunger for his craft" Lost In The Sound Links: @skilf
