Ok.......so this is what I've finished so far (for Ju-On), in rough viewing order:
Katasumi
4444444444
Ju-On: The Curse
Ju-On: The Curse 2
Ju-On: The Grudge
Ju-On: The Grudge 2
Ju-On: Black Ghost
Ju-On White Ghost
So basically got the whole original series outta the way (I do recommend Black Ghost and then White Ghost last, since that's the more chorono accurate way). I like them all! JOTG2 was kinda......well I'd rank it lower than the other's (yes even Cursed 2 and BG/WG). I recommend watching a cut that makes The Curse 1/2 into "one movie" so you avoid the repeat scenes in TC2. BG/WG wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be, WG was a bit funny cause of the basketball but it was heartbreaking. The drama/story was stronger in WG imo, but BG had slightly better horror and a decent story too.
What's left for Ju-On (in rough viewing order):
Reboot: Ju-On: The Beginning of the End and Ju-On: The Final Curse
American series: The Grudge, The Grudge 1.5, The Grudge 2, Tales of the Grudge, The Grudge 3, The Grudge (2020)
TV: Ju-On: Origins
Crossover: Sadako vs Kayako (saving till after I do all of Ringu)
I don't think it matters if I watch Tales of the Grudge before or after The Grudge 2 tbh....
Ringu that I have to do:
Ringu/Ringu Kanzenban (1995): 1st adaptation, Based off of novel, most accurate adaptation.
Ringu (1998): Most popular I believe, not sure how loosely based it is on the novel.
Spiral (1998): Original sequel of Ringu (1998) but takes the sequel novels name? Seems to adapt parts of the novel at least.
Ringu 2: Second sequel to Ringu (1998), replaces Spiral (1998). Original story that ignores Spiral.
Ring 0: Birthday: Prequel to Ringu (1998), based off of short story in anthology novel titled birthday.
Sadako 3D: Loosely based on S novel
Sadako 3D2: Direct sequel to Sadako 3D, last installment of "Rasen" story line?
Sadako vs Kayako: Skip till later
Sadako: Sequel to Ringu 2 (1999)??? Loosely based off the Tide Novel. Seems to have a tie-in manga of "Sadako-san and Sadako-chan"
Sadako DX: Sequel to Spiral (1998)???????!!! Oh this is gonna be so confusing TT0TT Also not sure if I'll be able to watch this juuuust yet cause my luck there's no translation yet.
Ring: The Final Chapter: TV Show, seems to be a slight reboot
Rasen (TV series): Sequel to Ring: The Final Chapter, doesn't related much to source material
The Ring Virus: Korean adaptation of Ringu (1998)
The Ring: American adaptation of Ringu (199*)
Rings: Short film that serves as a sequel to The Ring and prelude to The Ring 2.
The Ring 2: Sequel to the American Ring, I think this plot is original.
Rings (2017): Sequel to The Ring 2, apparently based off of Spiral's premise.
Phew I think that's it- wait, what the fuck is a Hikiko-san VS Sadako???? Bunshinsaba vs Sadako???? 1, 2, AND 3????? Oh I'll cross that bridge when we get there. TT0TT
Honey, baby, sweetie. Why the fuck are you fighting everybody and their mother???? TT0TT
(anyway, gonna ignore reading novels/manga or watching the games for now)
#silly watches#silly marathon#horror marathon#now i just need to see what should be the 3rd franchise I binge for halloween 8U#long post

Ring (1995), Ring (1998), The Ring (2002)
"Frolic in brine, goblins be thine"- Ring(1998)
"Daddy loves horses"- The Ring(2002)
I went on a Ring binge this Friday. I watched so much Ring. Some of it good. Some of it truly just awful. Some of it pretty damn funny. I also went down something of a Ring rabbit hole.
Nakata Hideo's Ring is a compelling mystery emanating from a singular point of sinister intent that constantly engaged the viewer with horror elements that drew them into a world of psychics, curses, and more sinister things lurking below our truly scant understanding of our very own world. Gore Verbinski's The Ring is an almost excruciatingly generic American horror film, with jump scares galore and set in the most broodingly spooky of American cities, Seattle.
All the things that made Nakata Hideo's Ring interesting were completely absent in Gore Verbinski's The Ring. My criticisms of the The Ring are numerous, not only did the horror elements fail to land in any meaningful way because the director would continue to plaster them anywhere they could every five minutes to remind the viewer that this was indeed a horror film, but the mystery that engaged me in Ring was nearly utterly absent. There is a degree of mystery in The Ring, however in no way is any of it interesting, there also isn't enough time for any of it be discussed without that stupid concert violinist hidden just out of view to draw out a sting. Perhaps most infuriating about The Ring in comparison to Ring is the contents of the tape itself. Every image in Ring has a particular meaning that in some way connects it to the ongoing events. The video in The Ring is in so many ways made up completely of nonsense to the point that it made rich ground for parody.
There is so much to be said about The Ring in comparison to Ring, but what stood out most at the midpoint of The Ring was Sadako's mother. In Ring Shizuko Yamamura, Sadako's mother, was a young woman from a small island that seemed to maintain an intimate and strange relationship with the sea, and who's incredible psychic powers drew the attention of an academic who exploited her by placing her before audiences that ultimately feared and condemned her. In The Ring, American Shizuko Yamamura is a well to do equestrian enthusiast from a small island who seemed to occupy all of her time with horses. This horse narrative occupies almost half of The Ring's run time. The Ring is a genuinely stupid and exhaustingly outdated generic American horror film, while watching it however it made me appreciate things that I didn't originally engage with while watching Ring such as more complex narratives surrounding gender.
Nakata Hideo's Ring was not the first adaptation of Koji Suzuki's novel. In 1995 Fuji TV adapted Ring into a made for TV film directed by Chisui Takigawa and which would later be released on home video as Ring: Kanzenban. Of the films released, The Ring: Kanzenban is, what most claim, the most accurate to the original novel. The difference is obvious very early on when Reiko Asakawa is completely absent. Instead the narrative centers on Kazuyuki Asakawa, a reporter whose career has undergone some considerable difficulty due to his relationship with a psychic accused of murder. After coming into contact with the tape he must seek out the man who marred his career in order to save himself from the curse of the tape.
Ring:Kanzenban was fun to watch. At times the excessive slanted full body shots, sharp cuts with audio stings, and the overwhelming amount of flood lights lend to it something of a telenovela quality. Sadako's experiences are most fully centered in the film more then anything else. What follows is a story of sexual exploitation and spectral terror that feel like a more identifiable Onryo story adapted for modern audiences. What I appreciated most about it though was perhaps how when viewing the tape the psychic attack that resulted from it was much stronger with the viewers environments and senses being warped while watching it.
I watched a lot of Ring this weekend. For very different reasons the films I watched made me appreciate or gain insight into things I hadn't truly before. I've hade enough Ring for now to last me a while.

A Guide to the Ringu/Ring Films
This one was very hard to put together as there is just so much Ring content out there, so hopefully I’ve got everything here, and if not, I’m sure this guide will have to be updated later on anyway!
A Quick Introduction
Ringu/Ring is a series that centers around Sadako Yamamura (aka Samara Morgan & Park Eun-suh) and a cursed video that causes all who watch it to die within seven days (or in one version, two days). Sadako’s backstory varies from entry to entry in the franchise, but it is generally portrayed that she had some sort of psychic powers before she died, partially leading to how the curse works.
Ring originally started out as a series of novels written by Koji Suzuki before it was adapted as a tv movie in 1995, then followed up by an actual theatrical movie in 1998.
The Japanese Ring Films
As stated, the first actual Ring movie is a 1995 tv movie.
Ring: Kanzenban (1995)
This adaptation follows the original story of the novel, so there’s many differences to the version that we know now, but Sadako is still a part of the story. It’s certainly worth a watch if you’re interested in the novels.
Now this is where things become a bit more confusing. At some point with the Japanese films they sort of split into four categories: the ones that follow director Hideo Nakata’s timeline, the ones that follow the book timeline, the ones that follow both timelines, and the versus films.
Both Timelines
Ring (1998)
Ring 0: Birthday (2000)
Ring/Ringu is obviously the movie we know today, that is very beloved. While it partially follows the books, it also has Hideo Nakata’s personal touches to it, that you’ll sort of see no matter what timeline you look at. Ring 0, however, is an origin story, and gives you a look into Sadako’s life before she died while she was a part of a theater troupe. It’s extremely tragic, and one of my personal favorites.
Hideo Nakata Timeline
Ring 2 (1999)
Sadako (2019)
As implied, these two movies follow Hideo Nakata’s storyline, and are also two other movies in the franchise directed by him. Would recommend these two if you want to see a continuation of the story from the characters in the first film.
Rasen Timeline
Spiral/Rasen (1998)
Sadako 3D (2012)
Sadako 3D 2 (2013)
So here’s the interesting thing about Spiral/Rasen, it was actually released at the exact same time as the original 1998 movie. However, there ended up being much more interest in Ring rather than Spiral, so it quickly flopped upon release and is why we saw another sequel to Ring come out the next year. Though there was certainly some interest in it, as the Sadako 3D movies were released in 2012 and 2013. While these follow different characters, they still have ties back to the ones from Spiral, and follow the books to some extent.
Versus Films
Hikiko-san vs Sadako (2015)
Sadako vs Kayako (2016)
Bunshinsaba vs Sadako (2016)
Bunshinsaba vs Sadako 2 (2017)
Basically, a bunch of movies portraying Sadako fighting other ghosts from Japanese/Chinese media. Each one is vastly different, but definitely fun if you’re into seeing that sort of thing! Note: at this time I am unable to find a translated version of the first Bunshinsaba vs Sadako movie, however, it won’t be an issue to watch the second as I was able to watch it easily without knowing the plot of the first (if you can find a translated version though, feel free to inform me!) Note: the Bunshinsaba vs Sadako films are actually Chinese movies, but since i was covering the vs films here, I felt it’d be best to just add it rather than making a whole different category.
The TV Series
Ring: The Final Chapter (1999)
Rasen (1999)
The last bit of Ring media we have to cover in Japan, Ring actually got a tv series with two seasons, one with 12 episodes and the other with 13 - the episodes running about 45 minutes each. Though I have not seen it yet so I can’t give great detail, it’s said to loosely be based off the novel along with the 1998 Ring film.
Updates
since making this of course more Ring media has came out, so any updates i will add as they come along
Sadako DX (2022) - haven’t seen it myself yet, but it’s stated to be a sequel to Spiral (1998)
The Ring Virus Film
A quick extra stop before we get to the American films, The Ring Virus (1999) is a South Korean remake of both the 1998 Ring movie, but also Ring: Kanzenban to an extent as well. It borrows many elements from both, and instead of Sadako we have Park Eun-suh as our cursed ghost this time. While I wouldn’t say it adds really anything new to the series, still worth the watch if you want to see all of the Ring movies.
The American Ring Films
The Ring (2002)
The Ring Two (2005)
Rings (2017)
I don’t think much needs to be said here. The Ring was a very popular remake in America and is what is credited for starting the J-Horror remake phase over here. The popularity caused for two current sequels to be made, one even directed by Hideo Nakata himself (The Ring Two). Obviously it’s a much more Americanized version of the series, with Sadako this time being replaced with Samara Morgan, which unlike herself in both the Japanese and Korean films, is a child, which adds a lot to how Samara’s story is played out differently from Sadako’s.
Other Media
If you’re looking for other media pertaining to the Ring Franchise, here’s some for you:
The Ring novel series by Koji Suzuki (consisting of 6 books: Ring, Spiral, Loop, Birthday, S & Tide)
The manga series (consisting of 6 different volumes all following different movies)
The Ring: Terror’s Realm (Dreamcast Game)
Rings (2005 short film)
Various other mangas and comics by different authors (Sadako-san and Sadako-chan, Sadako at the End of the World, Sadako)
And there you have it! A hopefully helpful guide to the Ringu/Ring franchise! Of course, new stuff will be added as time passes.

What are some j-horror films that you feel don't get enough love? (particularly if there's a good dvd or blu-ray release out there) There's a lot of discussion about the big powerhouses like Kwaidan, Ringu, Dark Water, Kuroneko, Jigoku, etc. - I'm curious what your journeys have shown you, in terms of secret corners of the genre, that have truly gotten their claws in.
The Ghost Story of Yotsuya
This is a difficult one. You ask any Japanese horror filmmaker and they’ll probably state this as the prototypical Japanese horror film, and it definitely is, but it’s still completely overlooked in the West. It got a short release on Hulu through Criterion a few years back, but to my knowledge, that’s it. Not only my favourite Japanese horror film, but probably the best horror film of that decade too.
Battle Heater Kotatsu
Fantastically stylish and energetic horror comedy from the 1980s in the style of Return of the Living Dead. Great soundtrack, inventive special effects and cinematography, as well as being the only live-action horror movie I can think of that’s entirely about Tsukumogami. Sure, the film is about a haunted Kotatsu, but is it really any sillier than a haunted videotape? The director, Joji Iida went on to direct the original adaptation of Ringu with Ringu Kanzenban as well as Ranse, the discarded Ring sequel.
Blind Beast
I don’t even know if this film is well regarded or not, but I know I rarely ever see it mentioned. Directed by Japanese New Wave filmmaker Yasuzo Masumura from a story by god of Ero-guro-nansetsu Edogawa Rampo it’s a pretty wild movie despite being set almost entirely in one room. Up there with Teruo Ishii’s Horrors of Malformed Men as the best examples of the genre. Some of the most avant-garde set design you’ll ever see.

Book: Ringu By Koji Suzuki
Film: Ring (1998)
A Japanese mystery horror novel by Koji Suzuki first published in 1991, and set in modern-day Japan. The novel was the first in the Ring novel series, and the first of a trilogy, along with two sequels: Spiral (1995) and Loop (1998). The original Ring novel sold 500,000 copies by January 1998, and 1.5 million copies by July 2000.[1] Ring was the basis for the Ring franchise, including a 1995 television film (Ring: Kanzenban), a 1998 theatrical film of the same name (Ring), a television series (Ring: The Final Chapter), and two international film remakes of the 1998 film: a South Korean version (The Ring Virus) and an English-language version (The Ring).
This Japanese horror film directed by Hideo Nakata and based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki stars stars Nanako Matsushima, Miki Nakatani and Hiroyuki Sanada, and follows a reporter who is racing to investigate the mystery behind a cursed videotape that kills the viewer seven days after watching it. It is titled The Ring (stylized as the Ring) in English in Japan and released as Ringu in North America.
Production took approximately nine months. Ring and its sequel Spiral were released in Japan at the same time. After its release, Ring was a huge box office success in Japan and was acclaimed by critics. It inspired numerous follow-ups in the Ring franchise, popularized J-horror internationally, and triggered a trend of Western remakes, starting with the 2002 American film The Ring.

Overview (IMDb Summary Written by Jean-Marc Rocher)
“In different parts of Tokyo, four young and seemingly healthy people suddenly die of heart failure at exactly the same moment. Reporter Kazuyuki Asakawa decides to investigate the deaths, and discovers that the four had stayed at a rural inn together just a week earlier. At the inn, he comes across a strange video that ends with a message saying that anyone who watches it will die exactly seven days later. Now the clock is ticking for Asakawa. Can he break the curse in time?”

Review:
------------------
Quote: “If you don’t want to die, there’s only one way to live: Those who have seen this video must... ” ~ Sadako Yamamura
------------------
Ring: Kanzen-ban (1995) is a Japanese television film based of of Koji Suzuki’s excellent horror/mystery novel Ring (1991/2004). It aired on Fuji TV on August 11. The film is known as the first visual adaptation of the novel. It is also the only film that follows the novel almost unchanged (this makes the film unique because every other adaptation of the novel has been changed excessively).
Due to this unchanged nature I find this adaptation to be the best. Not only is the adaptation accurate it also is the most entertaining when it comes to its acting, soundtrack, etc. The film comes off as less horror and more mystery. Even with this lack of horror, the film still keeps the viewer entertained.
All of the characters are portrayed perfectly. Yoshio Harada nails his performance as a more lay back (and less rapey) version of Ryuji Takayama. Katsunori Takahashi plays a frightened Kazuyuki Asakawa to the point where I believe his distress to be genuine.
Some of the aspects that they covered within the film that came from the novel I enjoyed finally seeing (this includes the projection of memories with a blink, and a reference to the cycle and reproduction of the tape as an aspect of the grudge created by Sadako). They did leave out some concepts to make sure that the film didn't run longer then 95 minutes, which is a shame because every ounce of content from the novel is amazing.
They even added small details within the film that would have actually added to the novel’s story. In the novel, we find out that Jotaro Nagao (an old doctor) killed Sadako. Nagao obviously feels ashamed of what he did, even though Sadako made him do it. Even with this shame, his future fate is left open. The film shows a small scene depicting the suicide of Jotaro. This closure to his character felt correct, even if it makes no difference to the overall ending of the story.
All in all I enjoyed the film immensely. Even though I now have to review a gaggle of lesser adaptations I can at least look back to this film and see that someone cared enough to not change every aspect of the film.
(Also boobs, that is all).

Final Verdict: 4/5
