I recently started watching Oniisama E and I keep joking to myself about Kaoru No Kimi being a genderbent reincarnation of Rikiishi Toru (cope)

I'm only 29 episodes into Ashita no Joe and avoiding spoilers like the plague. But I am obsessed with these two, and they are obsessed with each other. 🧡❤
(I've put the original image under the cut, as well as the exact moment in the anime that inspired this drawing.)
[image ID: a digital drawing of Joe and Rikiishi from Ashita no Joe. On the right, Rikiishi is bare-chested and sweating, with a towel slung around his neck. He is smiling and looking down at something off-screen. On the left, Joe is staring rather obviously at Rikiishi's chest and sweating. End image ID.]

[image ID: a photograph of two people. The person on the right has an almost exaggeratedly large chest, and the person on the left, who is much shorter than the person on the right, is staring rather obviously at it. End image ID.]

[image ID: a screenshot from Episode 28 of Ashita no Joe. On a television screen, in blues and greens, Rikiishi is posed in a boxing ring, a towel over his head, while Joe stands just outside the ropes, staring at Rikiishi with his jacket slung over one shoulder. End image ID.]

Huge post comparing Rikiishi Toru from Ashita no Joe to the boxing antagonist “Shirotsubaki Jō” / “Dynamite Fuji” from Yuuyake Banchō vol 13.
"Jo” was made as a tribute to Rikiishi by the same author as “Ashita no Joe” who also wrote for Yuuyake Bancho.

might be because they're the only two manga I've read recently, but I really see a lot of Tomorrow's Joe thematic rhythms in Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray. Or it could just be that Tomorrow's Joe kick-started the whole sports drama underdog trope. Yeah it's most certainly that. But my experiences of reading both mangas gave me the same sensation. Joe Yabuki vs. Rikiishi Toru had the same energy as Oguri vs. Tamamo Cross. Though Joe wasn't able to officially beat Rikiishi while Oguri Cap beat Tamamo Cross. Still. I like good stories. I wanna read more good stories.

This cover is a “what if” film about a side story of Rikishi.
Interesting, Yo Moriyama was originally going to make a side story of Rikishi for Tomorrow’s Joe 50th Anniversary. The idea was scraped due to slim background information about the character or something idk. Instead, Yo made Megalobox as reimagining of the original series.

Super masterpost “Toru Rikiishi”
I recently finished this great series, whose theme is boxing (Ashita no Joe), and decided to pay tribute to one of my favorite characters  "Toru Rikiishi".
I feel that the fandom of AnJ does not give all the love that this great character deserves, for that same reason I decided to upload the best images in which he appears during the second series. (They are all the screenshots). He is better drawn than in the first season.
Rikiishi, as far as I'm concerned, is one of the best characters in the whole series, Ikki Kajiwara and Tetsuya Chiba were geniuses to give him that personality so determined, true to its promises and full of pride.
In addition, thanks to him, our hero, Joe Yabuki, knows the cruel, but satisfying world of boxing, and never forgot all the sacrifice that characterized him throughout the anime.
You marked a before and after in the history of the manga, Rikiishi, and that's why we'll never forget you.
Sorry for my bad english
