The first woman to graduate from the Citadel as an institution did so in 1969 after simply meeting all of the requirements for entry. civilian programs at the Citadel were always open to women.

Mace was the first woman to graduate from the closed *Corps of Cadets* program. she wasn’t the one to sue to get in. she didn’t even demand entry. she was accepted after it was already open to her, and graduated after meeting the same requirements as the men.

The Corps of Cadets program became open to women after a previous effort by Shannon Faulkner.

Faulkner had been admitted purely on merit until they found out she was female (admissions thought Shannon was a male name) and retracted the offer.

The Citadel had closed their live-in programs to women because they worried they wouldn’t be able to stop the male cadets from trying to rape the female students.

So Faulker filed a complaint. the ONLY reason her suit was successful was because therewas no equivalent state-funded program/school/facility for women at the time. had there been, and the suit likely would have failed.

The Citadel also had the option to make an equivalent segregated women’s program, they chose not to.
