TWO of them?#I almost hope there’s another shard stuck that needs to work its way out#at least it will heal quicker then!

WISDOM TEETH, OYSTERS, AND BEDTIME STORIES — j.yh
[ ☆ ] summary: apparently, all it takes is two wisdom teeth, one foul oyster and a fuckass bedtime story to end your decade-long beef with your arch-nemesis, jeong yunho.
pairing: arch-nemesis!yunho x fem!reader. tags: enemies-to-lovers au, fluff, crack, witty. note: yuyu's a bit mean mwahaha. slight yungi x reader. best friend!mingi mentioned. yunho and reader's beef is not intense but long-standing and petty. mingi loves you both tho. wc: 1.5k i think. warnings: mentions of anaesthesia, vomiting, and swearing.

the instructions were plain and simple.
mingi was supposed to pick you up from the dental clinic after your wisdom teeth removal appointment at two pm sharp because god knows you'll be high off your head from the anaesthesia to even comprehend traffic lights. but lo and behold, things don't go quite as planned because some guy in a grey hoodie shows up instead of your best friend. how d'you know?
he's got naked fingers.
"you're not wearing any r-rings–" you slur at the unidentifiable stranger, decoding his face with your half-lidded eyes before realising;
"wait, you're not mingi!"
"no shit, einstein." yunho rolls his eyes, scoffing at your accusation. you're barely standing up straight.
yunho's your arch-nemesis, your best friend—mingi's other best friend (which is why he's your arch-nemesis), and your ex high school class president who caught you cheating on your physics finals in junior year and almost got you expelled. whatever, you think he's just conceited and has no life, that's why he goes around policing the free-willed like you. acting all high and righteous like he knows it all (he actually does know it all but you'd rather swallow a lava rock than admit it).
"man, you're so cooked," yunho laughs mockingly, snaking an arm around waist to hold you upright.
although he can be petty and leave you here for the flies (it's summer), yunho's a man of his words and great time management.
the plan was plain and simple.
he promised mingi to pick you up from the dental clinic after your wisdom teeth removal at two pm sharp because mingi decided it was a great idea to slurp a two-day old raw oyster straight from the fridge that san had forgotten to throw out which sent him straight to the emergency room for food poisoning at ten in the morning. who escorted him? that's right. yunho. after all the barf hysteria mingi's put him through, yunho only got a 'bro, can you pick y/n up? also wear rings so she doesn't freak out.'
the fuck, yunho thought to himself.
but now it all makes sense.
you identify mingi by the rings on his fingers when you're feeling loopy and not quite there; like when you're drunk from the club or high off your head from anaesthesia.
yunho thinks that's kinda cute; your habit. you're kinda cute, now that he's gotten a closer look at you.
"can someone please remove this man from my sight?"
yeah, fuck that. yunho shoots you a glare you probably can't even see. "enough. we're going home."
"um, no. the fuck," you hiss, prying his hands off your arm before turning to your assigned nurse with tears in your eyes, "n-nurse yoon, this is not my guy– mingi's supposed to pick me up and he wears loooots of rings. this–"
"y/n, look at me." yunho steadies you with both hands, looking you straight in the eyes. "mingi's got food poisoning and he's at the er right now. so, i'm, me, yunho," he points at himself, "i'm gonna take you home, okay?"
there's a moment of silence.
nurse yoon finally excuses herself and hands you over to the tall man in the grey hoodie, advising him to watch you until the anaesthesia wears out from your system. he sounds so familiar yet you can't quite wrap your head around where you've seen him. the only thing you recognise, though, is his scent—soft, clean and musky like freshly hung laundry in the summer sun.
"yunho?" you mutter weakly, finally regaining a bit of clarity.
"yeah, me, dumbass. who else?" yunho replies flatly, though if you squint hard enough, you might just spot playfulness on the curve of his lips.
getting you home was a journey. not that you live far from the clinic but you couldn't stop bursting into fits of giggles and asking yunho to tell you funny stories so much so that he had to stop three times on the road to fix up your seatbelt.
"no more funny stories," yunho shuts you then your apartment door with a firm 'bang'.
you're standing in front of him like a kid in time-out, lips pursed in fear and excitement. maybe it's the anaesthesia, maybe it's your first time being this close to your arch-nemesis, maybe it's the sternness in his voice and the intensity in his gaze when he tells you to "behave" while gently grabbing your chin. something is definitely different about yunho, and you can't quite say you hate him as much as you did before.
"can i get a bedtime story then?" you bat your lashes.
"sun's still up."
"you're actually so lame, you know that?"
yunho never left you.
the sun has long set and you're fast asleep in your room, softly snoring under a pile of pillows after a bowl of chicken soup he made you and two tylenols. he kept the nightlight on—a small miffy lamp on your bedside table and made sure to refill your humidifier once every few hours. you're in deep, deep sleep, as expected. nurse yoon had advised him to keep an eye on you for two to four hours post-op. it's now half-past nine. why is he still here? he doesn't even know.
mingi's still at the hospital with a guilty san though he can now text. they'll probably let him go tomorrow morning if his conditions improve tonight. this is good news, yunho tells himself. he feels a great relief that his best friend's recovering, yet a part of him is filled with utter dread because if mingi gets discharged tomorrow morning then that means he's no longer your primary carer; that means he's ... leaving you.
what the fuck, yunho thinks.
is this what he thinks it is? no ... there is no way he's crushing on you. you? the chronic academic cheater? the spoiled crybaby? no way. yunho is genuinely crashing out in your little pink kitchen. before he can string together another mental smear campaign against your name in an attempt to 'un-crush' you, a shrill cry breaks from your room.
rushing over, yunho finds you uncontrollably sobbing in bed, eyes shut, brows knitted in utter distress. you're having a nightmare. his heart softens.
"shh, shh, it's okay," he coos, "it's okay, now." slowly, he slips into your bed and under your sheets, holding your trembling body close to his chest, cradling your head in his arms as he gently rubs circles on the skin of your lower back, steady and slow.
"yunho?"
yunho glances down at your half-awake face, wiping away your tears with his thumb. "mhm?" the circles on your back don't stop.
"can you tell me a bedtime story?"
"no," he replies flatly, swallowing the urge to smile. but when he sees your teardrops double-up in size, he immediately switches up. "alright, fine, fine. let me think of something." he coughs, "once upon a time, there were three best friends–"
"is it us?"
"no questions," yunho mutters, restarting, "once upon a time, there were three best friends who lived in a small cottage by the woods. one was goofy, one cried a lot, and one was super smart. they would go fishing by the creek and spy on the neighbours–"
yunho pauses.
he looks down and finds you snoring on his chest, hand still gripping onto his grey hoodie. a content sigh leaves his lips as he takes in the features of your face; your pretty lashes, pretty nose and pretty pink lips. you're so pretty, he thinks. why are you even beefing?
"goodnight, crybaby," he murmurs, pressing a gentle kiss to your forehead. before he knows it, sleep creeps up his sleeve and you're both fast asleep in each other's arms.
epilogue
"WHAT THE FUCK."
you and yunho jolt awake, whipping your heads to the doorway to find a freshly discharged mingi, frozen and wide-eyed, staring at you with horror and bewilderment dripping from his face as if he's just seen a ghost.
"while i was puking my life out in the er, you're here cuddling up to each other like– bro, what– you betrayed my moral loyalty! the both of you!"
"just say you're jealous and jump in," yunho groans groggily and throws throws a pillow at his best friend. he dips back into bed, pulling you into his chest.
you giggle when the bed dips behind you, followed by an arm around your waist, cold rings pressed against your skin.
"i need a proper explanation after this," mingi murmurs in your hair, eyes drooping as the post-food-poisoning fatigue starts to hit him.
yunho only hums in response and swats mingi's arm away from you. "did i say you can touch her?"

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫

Just a very amateur fanfic to practice my writing skills. Honestly, this kind of reflects my experience with getting my wisdom teeth extracted. Looking back on one of the bond stories with Zayne, he is clearly not a huge fan of the dentist, nor does he pay any mind to his own toothaches. I was curious about how MC would take care of Zayne after he had his wisdom teeth removed.
Synopsis: Considering how Zayne canonically acts when he's drunk, it's kind of silly, right? Think about it. It could go the same way when waking up from anesthesia. Heck, Zayne, being a cardiac surgeon, is well aware of how anesthesia affects people in general. So, I had the idea that MC, being his trusted caretaker for his own dental surgery, would put Zayne in a situation where he would be a bit nervous about how he may act when he's loopy on anesthesia.
Anyway, let me stop rambling. I wanted to write something very heartwarming and hopefully, it can be a decent read. This is just practice writing, after all.
Word Count: 2772
Content: female reader, SFW, sweet, cuddles, anesthesia talk, wisdom tooth removal surgery aftercare, drunk Zayne? (more like loopy Zayne)
5:30 am. It was a bright, early morning, and you were lounging on Zayne’s couch waiting for him to get ready. Today marked his appointment to have his wisdom teeth removed, and you were chosen to take care of him afterward.
The sound of Zayne shuffling into the living room alerted you to stand up. He was dressed warm and comfortable in a simple, thin sweater and pants. You notice him tugging at his sweater collar, and you can't help but point out the elephant in the room.
“Hey, are you nervous?” You step towards him with your hands clasped behind your back.
Upon hearing your teasing tone, Zayne tries his best to sound as nonchalant as possible. “It's not a big deal; it's just like any other visit to the dentist,” he answers as he clears his throat. You shake your head with a smile.
Ah, he is still the same as he was from his last visit to the dentist.
“Except, you’re going to be under anesthesia this time, and you’ll be super drowsy afterward. That’s why I’m here to make sure you don’t bump your head against the walls or say anything embarrassing.” You spread your palms across his broad chest, causing a soft blush to creep up on Zayne’s face and ears.
“And I do appreciate that you’re here. But I get the feeling that you're teasing me about how I might behave once I recover from anesthesia. It’s not like I’m going to be drunk.”
You let out a sheepish laugh as you recall a previous date with Zayne. You had offered him a piece of chocolate that contained traces of alcohol. While you did not intend for him to get drunk, he was very lightweight that night. If it weren’t for you, he would not have found his way back home.
Sure, his drunk behavior was silly and the things he said were out of the ordinary, but it made you curious about how anesthesia might affect him.
“I know, but I promise I’m just here to take care of you and make sure you’re okay.” You smooth out the rest of Zayne’s sweater and give him an affectionate pat. “Let’s get going! You don’t want to be late for check-in.”
You gently take Zayne’s hand and lead him out of the house to his car. Now, normally, he would be the one to drive, but knowing him, he would find any possible way to avoid the dentist. No way you were letting him get away that easily.
It was a chilly morning in Linkon City, and you tried to make the most of the 25-minute drive. You made no room for silence by asking Zayne about work or any movies you wanted to see together. Perhaps you could get Zayne’s mind off worrying for a little while.
You finally arrive at the oral surgeon clinic. Once you park the car, you feel Zayne’s hand enveloping yours. You respond with a loving squeeze and playfully jiggle his hand. “Hey, it's okay. I’ll be right here when you’re done. The doctors here will take good care of you.”
Zayne exhales and gives you a nod. You both exit the car and arrive in the lobby for check-in. You were greeted by the receptionist with a warm welcome. “Good morning. Are you checking in for an appointment?” The young woman hands you paperwork for patient sign-in and an anesthesia consent form.
“Yes, it’s under the name Zayne.” You turn your head to Zayne who is comfortably lounging on one of the lobby chairs. He lowers his head but you catch a faint blush forming on his face.
As you fill in the paperwork, the receptionist types away at her computer. “Perfect, I'll have him checked in. Has he fasted the night prior?”
Poor Zayne. You remembered to follow the doctors' instructions to prevent him from indulging in any food the night before. When you stayed overnight at Zayne's house, you chose to sleep in the living room, taking on the role of "kitchen guardian." It wasn't that you didn't trust Zayne, you just knew he could be a bit sneaky when it came to sweets, even in his home.
“Yes, he had nothing to eat or drink at all. I feel so bad for starving him.” As you hand the receptionist the completed paperwork, she gives you a reassuring smile.
“I understand. It is just for his safety when he's under anesthesia.” The receptionist continues typing on her computer and gives you a nod. “Alright, you can have a seat. I’ll let the doctor know you’re waiting.”
You thank the receptionist and take a seat next to Zayne, who appears a bit tense. Gently, you reach out and rub his left arm. Your heart sinks seeing him so nervous at his own doctor’s visit. But it’s normal; you’ve admitted that you also get anxious at the hospital. However, you’ve come to realize that with Zayne by your side, you feel a little less nervous, and you want him to feel relaxed with you.
“Hello, do I have Zayne here?” Your ears perked up as one of the nurses called for Zayne. He stood up from his seat and approached the nurse. “Yes, I’m here. She’s with me.”
The nurse clasped her hands, her eyes squinting as she smiled under her surgical mask. “Nice to see you again, Dr. Zayne. Just follow me, and I’ll lead you to the operating room.”
Zayne glances back at you in a brief attempt to look brave. You give him a thumbs up and mouth the words, “I’ll be right here.” He nods and follows the nurse to his operating room.
As he disappeared in the clinic hallway, you reclined in your lobby seat and scanned for any daily Wanderer reports from your hunter’s watch. Luckily, you were able to get the day off work to take care of Zayne. In addition, there were no Wanderer reports that raised any concern.
It felt like an hour had passed, and you were dozing off on the chair with your head resting on your palm. You suddenly hear your name being called by one of the nurses.
“Hey, sorry to wake you. But Zayne is all done with his procedure.”
You stretch your arms and walk up to the nurse. “Is Zayne doing alright?”
“Zayne is doing just fine. He is still very drowsy, so we’re just giving him a few more minutes.” She hands you a plastic medicine bag filled with prescription bottles holding painkillers and antibiotics, a curved syringe, and wads of gauze. She leads you to a separate room to give you further instructions. “I’ve given you his medication, mouth syringe, cotton balls, gauze, and some paper instructions on caring for him.”
The nurse points to the paper, neatly folded in the bag. You unfold the paper and read the instructions meticulously. The nurse continues to instruct you on keeping Zayne on a soft diet, making sure his gauze is changed, rinsing his mouth after eating, giving medication, and ice-packing his face to reduce swelling. The nurse is then alerted by the surgeon.
“Zayne is ready now. You can follow me.”
The surgeon smiles and leads you to the room where Zayne is resting. As you enter the recovery room, you find Zayne in quite a state. He is reclined in his chair, with small ice packs surrounding his face. He appears to be half asleep, and his cheeks are stuffed with thick gauze. You try your hardest not to laugh as he reminds you of a sleepy squirrel. Gently, you tap his shoulder. He slowly looks up at you and greets you with a slurred tone.
“It’s you, my love. Where have you been? I can't feel my face.” Zayne reaches his arms out to you as if he wants to be picked up.
What a sight this was. This was a little bit like how Zayne talked when he was drunk. Childish, but still so sweet. His voice was also a bit nasal with the gauze stuffing his cheeks.
You lower his arms down and hold his hands. “Hey, sweetie, I’m here to take you home.” You turn to face the surgeon as he enters the room. “Is he going to be talking like this for a while?”
The surgeon approaches and chuckles. “The anesthesia will make him loopy, but it should wear off in about 1 to 2 hours. So just be aware he will feel pain once that happens. Let’s help him get to the car.”
You went out to park the car by the curb outside the clinic building, and Zayne was brought to the passenger door in a wheelchair. You opened the car door and assisted Zayne into his seat, noticing that his limbs and body had the consistency of cooked udon noodles. You grabbed a neck pillow and a blanket from the back seat to ensure he was comfortable. Once Zayne was securely in his seat, you waved goodbye and thanked the dental clinic staff.
On the drive back home, Zayne rambled for what felt like 20 minutes about how much he missed you and how hungry he was. It was more lively than the drive to the oral surgeon clinic.
Upon arriving at Zayne’s house, you helped him to the front door, supporting him with your hand around his waist and his arm over your shoulder. You could feel his weight against you as he struggled to keep his balance. Despite holding him like a ragdoll, you managed to input the passcode to unlock the front door. You led him to his bedroom and tucked him in, patting his chest under the thick bed sheets before planting a soft kiss on his forehead.
Now, just rest here. I’m going to heat the soup I bought you and make you a strawberry banana smoothie.”
You could hear Zayne slightly groan and rub his eyes. He reaches for your hand and requests with a slight squint in his eyes. “After I’m done napping, can you please buy me some macarons? I want the blue ones..”
You giggle and shake your head. It was like he was a little kid who was innocently begging for something sweet. Then again, you found it very endearing when Zayne was young at heart. You ruffle his hair before you exit his bedroom.
You wag a finger at him. “Sorry mister, doctor's orders state you can’t have macarons. They may be a soft dessert, but you shouldn’t have anything sugary until you recover! But I promise I’ll make the smoothie sweet enough for you.”
Zayne’s habit of indulging in his sugar cravings was no secret, but you were the one to call him out for it and keep him accountable. You both shared a love for sweets, but you could vouch that Zayne had the stronger sweet tooth.
You leave the room and enter Zayne’s kitchen to prepare his meal. The store-bought chicken noodle soup was boiling along with the blender, forming a smoothie from the fresh-cut fruit. It wasn’t uncommon that you were the person trusted most to care for Zayne, especially when he needed it.
For as long as he’s been your primary doctor, he’s insisted on taking care of you most of the time. This meant Zayne would barely take the time to take care of himself, whenever he got sick or hurt.
Especially when it came to his toothaches.
Zayne would mostly just brush it off or try to hide it from you. It was his nature to put others’ needs before his own, and it was something you always adored about him. But..
He shouldn’t ignore his health. A doctor must also be healthy to keep others healthy as well.
You twitch as you hear the creak of Zayne’s bedroom door open. You hear shuffling footsteps behind you and see a very sleepy Zayne trudging towards you while wrapped in a blanket.
You step away from the stove and catch him before his hip can hit the kitchen island. While you cradled his tall figure, he rested his head on yours. You seemed stunned, but you greeted him with a rub on his lower back. “What’s wrong? Can’t sleep? Is the pain bad?”
Your questions were left unanswered, instead met with a lazy moan from Zayne. His arms wrap around you with the blanket surrounding your body like a cocoon. “The bedroom is too dark… I want to see you..” He replied, his tone with a tinge of slurring and vocal fry.
As he spoke, his warm breath blew strands of hair on your scalp. You continue rubbing his back, and his heartbeat thumps against your ear. “You goof.. I’m not going anywhere.”
Zayne is cute when he’s needy. The warmth of your body starts to resonate with his. “It’s lonely in my room. I want to sleep on the couch with you and cuddle. You’re so warm. Like a baby seal.”
You can’t help but giggle. Zayne wouldn’t usually express such gushy words, but even under the effects of anesthesia, you could tell he was still himself. You let out a heavy sigh and pushed his black bangs to the side. His cheeks were flushed; the heat was practically radiating off his face. “You should go lie down, Zayne. Your food is almost ready.”
You point to the couch, but Zayne didn't budge. He leans on you again and nuzzles your face. You pull his face down and kiss both of his eyelids. “Go on now, Zayne. Then I’ll feed you.”
Zayne pouts and then starts to drag his slippered feet towards his couch. He looks back at you. “Then we can cuddle?”
Before resuming your cooking, you reply with a smile. “Yes. Then we can cuddle.”
You hear Zayne grunt as he plops onto the couch. After giving the soup a final stir in the pot, you pour it into a bowl. The delicious aroma seemed to have caught his attention. You grab a glass and pour some strawberry banana smoothie from the fridge. Taking a seat next to Zayne, you set the soup and smoothie on the coffee table in front of him.
Zayne slowly sits up and opens a part of the blanket as if he were a bird lifting its right wing. You scoot over and feel his warmth envelop you once more. You start feeding him small portions of the soup, cooling down each spoonful with a blow. He shivered slightly after taking a sip from the smoothie.
Maybe you put a little too much ice..but he seemed to like it.
After Zayne finishes his meal, you assist him in the bathroom to rinse his mouth, change his gauze, and give him his medication. You guide him back to the couch and embrace Zayne. While he rested his head on your chest, he prods at his left cheek, seemingly favoring the numbness in his face. To soothe him, you whisper in his ear and run your fingers through his hair. “Shhh... It’s okay. Is your face feeling tingly?”
Zayne lets out a quiet, “mmhm”. You could have sworn his voice was wavering behind his words. “I appreciate you so much. You’re always taking care of me.”
You continue shushing him and plant a kiss on the top of his head. “I’m here for you, always. My big, cuddly snowman.”
You heard him reply “I love you.” in a muffled voice.
He’s so adorable. Zayne's behavior was slightly different when he was under anesthesia. Despite his ramblings, you couldn’t bring yourself to make fun of him. He could be silly around you, no matter how serious he claimed to be. You cherish the moments when you and Zayne would reminisce about your childhood and engage in playful activities together, even as adults. It didn’t matter whether it was just spending time at home or doing something extravagant; for you, it is time well spent with him.
You whisper back. “I love you too...” Before long, both of you were napping on the couch together. The afternoon sun streamed in through the cracks of the blinds, filling the room with a soft light. It was quiet and still in Zayne’s house, the only noticeable sound being the synchronized breathing of the two of you. The voice in your head whispered.
"I’ll be here to take care of you. Just like you always take care of me."

Uncomfortably Numb (Yan! Law x Reader) Two shot (1/3)

18+ MDNI | on Ao3
The other parts
This was supposed to be a drabble. A DRABBLE! I got a lot of Yan Law asks, so I hope this feeds you Law girlies. I'm planning on finishing this week, not going to be a long time in between updates.
TW: teeth and dentistry but no procedures described in detail.
Thank you to @gouraminnow, @tryingandfailingtowrite, and @sordidmusings for all your help and ideas <3
~
You're the Grand Line's best dentist with a specialty in humans with fishman genetics. You work with the use of your Numb Numb fruit, which makes it easy for you to anesthetize patients and help them feel less pain. Dr. Trafalgar seeks you out to help with one of his crew mates but might want to keep you for himself...
~
Getting on the Polar Tang had been easy - but getting off was proving to be impossible. After listening at the door for a few minutes to make sure the entire crew had disembarked, you used your right hand to twist the handle to Law’s cabin while using your chin to push in the mechanism that unlocked the door. Once it had been easy to open the door and exit the room but since Law had taken your left hand you hadn’t been able to come and go since his door handle required two hands to operate. You'd been practicing for weeks to open it with your teeth and chin and your persistence finally paid off with the soft click of the lock opening. The metal doorknob now bore your tooth marks in it but dulling your teeth was a price you were willing to pay for freedom.
You felt like your heart was beating in your throat - but that wasn’t possible since it was kept in Law’s office, along with your left hand. Regardless, you peered out the door as quietly as you could, looking down the long hallway towards the main hub of the Polar Tang. You'd been planning your escape for weeks and had everything timed down to the second - you had approximately 3 minutes and 14 seconds to get off the Tang before Law noticed your absence and room’d you back into his chambers. You didn't have time for meandering thoughts as you crept down the hallway towards your freedom.
It wasn’t always like this with Law. When you first met him, he was reserved, calm and charming in his own introverted manner. He’d actually sought you out, coming to the island you’d been working at for a few months. You were a dentist by trade and you specialized in treating fishmen and humans with fishman lineage. Law had come to your makeshift dentistry office with his crew mate Shachi, who was having significant dental issues. Shachi was nearly doubled over in pain when Law and Penguin had brought him to your clinic.
“Do you have space in your schedule for another patient, Dentist-ya?” Law intoned in his deep voice. You knew who Law was, of course, he was one of the most famous pirates on the seas. You'd also heard about his excellence in his medical endeavors and were curious about his knowledge coupled with the use of his abilities. “My brother Shachi is experiencing immense tooth pain and I am seeking your expertise,” Law continued, flicking his eyes around the rented room.
“Yes, I happen to have time right now,” you said, looking over the poor man as he cradled his jaw. You’d just finished a three year old’s first dental visit and were looking over the chart you’d made. Setting down the papers on a desk, you beckoned to the men. “Come along to the back, Mr. Shachi, let’s take a look at cha,” you said with practiced nonchalance. Inside you were already mentally preparing for a lot of work - based on looks, Shachi was an apex predator fishman / human and that always made for trouble tooth-wise.
Fishmen had standard enough dental needs for cleanings and the like. Sometimes you had to pry out teeth that wouldn’t fall out, or help with general hygiene but overall it was fairly simple. On the other hand, humans with fishman lineage often ran into dental troubles as the genetics weren’t always stable. Sometimes they’d have teeth that were too crowded for a human jaw, or teeth that were so sharp they hurt the owner, or never developed certain teeth at all. It was a real grab bag of genetic material and you were sympathetic to those who drew the short end of the proverbial straw. You led the three men to the back room with the dentist chair as the one with a penguin on his hat helped Shachi recline. You’d rented the office for a few months in exchange for numbing the owner’s bad knees at night, a pretty good deal for you. You rolled towards the patient on a small stool, holding a pair of rubber gloves in your hands but not putting them on.
“I’m guessing you’re in a lot of pain, then?” you asked sympathetically. The red haired man nodded, his hand still cradling his face.
“Let’s get you numb first then I can take a look. How does that sound?” you asked, reaching for his face.
“You’re not going to anesthetize him without gloves, I presume. And you have no syringe,” an unamused Law stated from where he was leaning against a window. You smiled easily, Law wasn’t the first doctor to question your methods.
“Yes, actually I am going to use my hands. I ate the numb numb fruit so if I touch his face I’ll be able to numb the pain,” you explained. “It won’t work if I put on the gloves but I assure you I adhere to the highest standards of medical sterility.” Law looked you over curiously before stalking over to you.
“Numb my wrist first,” he ordered, sticking out his hand towards your surprised face. You raised an eyebrow but didn’t make any other movements.
“Why? Does it hurt?” you asked, looking over the tattooed hand before your eyes.
“No. I want to ensure that this works before any of my crew are subjected to treatment,” he said. It wasn’t the most unreasonable request you’d ever gotten, and it was nice to see a Captain who was protective over his crew. The word DEATH was spelled out before your eyes but it was at odds with the care he was showing for his crew mate.
“Sure. Come here,” you requested. Law moved to stand over you, his golden eyes hawk-like as you gripped his wrist loosely in your right hand and used the fingers of your left hand to make a movement like you were injecting a syringe into his wrist. After using your fruit, you held his wrist in your hand as you waited for his reaction. Law poked and prodded at himself, even bashing it against the wall, which made you jump.
“Completely numb. How many layers into the fascia does the anesthesia go? And how long will it remain this way?” he asked as he picked up his arm from your hold and rolled his hand, poking along his skin.
“It’s local, but I could slice your hand off and you wouldn’t feel a thing. It will stay that way until I reverse it. If you’re satisfied, I’d really like to help your brother,” you said, holding out your right hand. Law hummed and put his hand in your own as you repeated the same injection movement with your right hand to reverse the sensation.
“Very useful. Are you able to produce regional and general as well?” he asked, touching his tattooed skin once more.
“I am, but I’d really like to focus on your brother right now,” you replied, turning your stool to begin working on the redhead in front of you. “I’m going to numb your mouth now. It will feel strange but the pain should be gone immediately. Are you ready?” you asked, bringing your left hand close to Shachi’s face. He nodded, his eyebrows knotted in pain as he kept himself still. You cradled his jaw in your left hand and used the power of your fruit on him, his jaw and mouth relaxing as you alleviated his pain. You let you and he let out a great sigh of relief, his head rolling back on his shoulders.
“Aahs gheat,” he said, finally relaxed in the chair. You gave him a bright smile and snapped on your rubber gloves. Grabbing a few tools, you had him open his mouth and began to examine the pirate using your mirror and explorer to poke around the patient’s mouth.
“Hm, what percent Orca fishman are you roughly?” you asked, lowering your mask from over your face. The orange haired man was wearing reflective sunglasses but his head moved to look at Law before he answered.
“Ah naht -” Shachi started to protest. You put your hand on top of his own.
“It’s ok, I’m part fishman too. You can’t really tell by looking at me, but I had significant dental issues from my fishman teeth and webbed feet to boot. I’m going to treat you, humans with fishman heritage are my specialty. The more information I have, the better I can assess your needs. Orcas have unique dental features that aren’t like other apex fishman species,” you explained, keeping your hand on his. His head turned back towards you before his body sagged.
“Aah dun kno,” he replied, something sad in his tone. It wasn’t uncommon for humans with fishman blood to be unsure of their heritage since human/ fishman relationships were so taboo in society. You sympathized with him, since you were raised by your now deceased father and alone in the world. You were perhaps the sole fishman who chose to eat a devil fruit but the benefits outweighed the cons, since you didn’t have gills or anything to show for your fishman side besides a messed up mouth that you’d already fixed and feet that didn't help you swim.
In addition to your knowledge of fishman anatomy, you had eaten the numb-numb fruit which made you able to anesthetize any part of someone’s body at any intensity for any duration. It was a highly convenient fruit for a dentist and it ensured your patients never felt anything during your work. If you were touching the patient, you could put them completely under sedation, which was useful for small children or nervous patients. You had a great reputation as the Grand Line’s top dentist and you were proud of the life you’d made for yourself.
“Don’t worry. I’ll figure things out and get you sorted,” you replied lightly, patting his hand. You raised your mask over your face again and began working poking around in his open mouth. Orcas weren’t like sharks or other fish that lost their teeth frequently - they had one set of adult teeth, similar to humans. Their conical teeth were made for grabbing and holding slippery prey and tear apart flesh - not chew like humans did. Inspecting Shachi’s mouth showed overcrowding common to humans with fishman genes, worn down teeth, and a cracked tooth. Setting down your tools, you pulled down your mask.
“You don’t have to take off your mask to speak, Dentist-ya,” Law said, still in the room.
“I don’t have to, but I like to,” you replied primly, your mask around your chin. “I like seeing people’s full faces when I speak with them, so I assume the same is true in reverse. It’s good bedside manner.” Giving him a curt nod, you turned to address Shachi. “You have a cracked tooth which is likely why you’re in so much pain. I could extract it but given your orca background I’d rather repair it. Were you chewing on metal?” you asked, trying to be as non judgemental as possible. Shachi flushed, confirming your suspicions.
“It’s not great for anyone to chew on metal, but especially for you with your teeth. You do it when you’re stressed, right?” you asked lightly with a tilt of your head. Shachi gave a guilty nod, looking away from both you and his captain. Shachi wasn’t your first orca fishman, chewing on hard materials was a common stress relief amongst the patients you’d seen.
“It’s alright, you’re not the first and you won’t be the last. I’ve seen it a lot in orca fishmen. Are you in a small space for an extended period of time? Maybe like an office or below deck or something?” you asked.
“Haa Pohaa Ta -” Shachi tried to speak but was cut off by his Captain, whose mouth was not incapacitated.
“The Polar Tang is a submersible vessel, we are under water for extended periods of time,” Law explained.
“That would do it. You feel the intense urge for freedom, right? To have an expanse available to you for swimming? Tooth grinding and chewing on metal or concrete is seen in orca fishmen and generally in fishmen in captivity. To fix your current issue, you’ll need a root canal, which takes at least an hour. I do happen to have some time available today if you’d like,” you explained. You were about done with your work on the island, all the villagers had gotten their teeth worked on already so your schedule had cleared up. In a few days you’d pack up and set sail for another island, generally steering closer to Fishman Island to compile more data for your research.
“He’ll take the appointment as soon as possible, Dentist-ya,” Law said with finality. “It’s been bothering him for months, it needs to be fixed.” You nodded and stood up from the little stool.
“That’s rough, sorry to hear that Shachi. Give me a few moments to get everything set up and we’ll get started,” you said, patting him on the shoulder. Law followed you as you went to an adjoining room where the autoclave was to get your tools. A shiver went down your spine as you realized you were effectively alone with one of the most dangerous men on the Grand Lane. He hadn’t done anything remotely unprofessional but he didn’t carry his giant sword for fun, either. Your hands shook slightly as you gathered everything you’d need for the surgery, including the tools you’d made yourself for fishman dentistry.
“Is everything alright, Dr. Trafalgar?” you asked, using his name for the first time.
“Quite. You’re proficient, Dentist-ya. Are you truly part fishman?” he asked, still watching you. You swallowed thickly, disliking that he was watching you prepare.
“I am. Not much, maybe a grandparent was a partial fishman. But that’s why I became a dentist - I had dental issues from my fishman teeth and no one would help me. I had to do my own dental surgery to fix my mouth,” you replied with a shrug. Law didn’t reply.
“I’ll assist on Shachi’s surgery if you’d like,” Law informed you as you placed everything on a tray.
“That’s not necessary, Dr. Trafalgar. I’ve done this procedure many times -” you huffed, annoyed he thought you weren’t able to perform the procedure on your own.
“I’m not doubting your expertise, I am offering my help because it is easier with two people. I seldom operate without Bepo, it makes operations smoother and more efficient,” Law explained calmly. Your eyes went wide when you thought about Bepo, the cutest pirate on the Grand Line, who you daydreamed about hugging.
“Does that mean Bepo is here?” you tried to ask casually, lifting your shoulder like you didn’t care either way. Law gave a light laugh, the first time he’d broken from his serious attitude.
“Bepo is on the island, yes,” Law said with a small smile raising the corners of his mouth. “I’m the Captain yet he’s the one everyone always wants to meet,” Law continued, taking the tray from your hands. “I’m familiar with most of these tools, but not all.”
“I invented some of them for fishman specific dental needs,” you explained, picking up a special kind of forceps you’d created for conical teeth like Shachi’s. “If you don’t mind me asking, why didn’t you perform the surgery? Based on your reputation you’re the most knowledgeable surgeon alive,” you asked, genuinely curious.
“I suppose I could have but I don’t feel as confident in oral surgery, especially in someone with fishman genetics. Also, frankly, mouths are gross,” Law said, making you laugh.
“Aren’t you the pirate who keeps hearts in cubes or something like that? And mouths are gross?” you asked, laughing again. Law smiled as the two of you returned to the room where Shachi was watching the interaction with interest. “That’s alright, I’m not offended. If you’d really like to assist, I won’t stop you. Gloves and masks are over there, we’re going to get started as soon as possible,” you said, adjusting the dental light over Shachi.
About an hour later the surgery was completed and Shachi was now the proud owner of a fixed orca tooth. Law had been an excellent assistant, anticipating your needs and preparing tools before you asked for them. Unlike other physicians you’d met, he wasn’t cocky or condescending, he treated you like a medical professional in your own right. You’d talked through what you were doing, both for Shachi’s edification as well as Law’s own. He seemed to enjoy when you spoke about the process, or the specific difficulties related to fishman human genetic combinations. He told you a little bit about the crew and the ship, though not much related to him personally.
Law was surprisingly pleasant company and the two of you engaged in light banter throughout the procedure, mostly about the pirates and their travels. You had always wanted to go in a submarine and see the deep underwater world. You weren’t fishman enough to have gills or to webbed hands, but there was something in you that pulled you to the water and made you want to spend your time in it. You supposed that was why you became a wandering dentist, so you could spend some time on the sea while also fulfilling your passion even if you could never swim again.
“That’s it, Shachi! You’re all set,” you said, unclipping the paper towel from in front of his boiler suit. “You might be a little sensitive to cold or hot for a few weeks but I’ll give you a light numbing that should last a day or two so you’re not in pain. Don’t eat hard food and don’t chew on metal ,” you said, looking him in the eye. You used your right hand to remove most of the anesthesia, leaving a lingering local anesthetic that would help him avoid the pain of the dental surgery.
“Thank you, Dentist-ya,” Law said, helping his brother off the dental chair.
“Yeah, really. Thank you so much, I haven’t felt this good in months,” Shachi said with a short bow. “Captain will pay,” he said after looking at Law with a wide, sharp grin. He quickly left while whistling a tune and poking at his teeth with his fingers. Law huffed and rolled his eyes but reached for a wallet in his pocket. You felt a little awkward cleaning up after the surgery with Law present but it had been a rather fun time, for a dental surgery.
“I’d like to offer you something else in addition to the money,” Law said, handing you a small stack of beri.
“Oh? Maybe a trip on the Polar Tang?” you joked, putting the bills into your pocket.
“That you can have at your leisure. No, I was wondering if you’d go out to dinner with me,” Law asked, adjusting the brim of his white hat. You were a little surprised but frankly flattered. It was no secret that Law was one of the most dangerous men on the seas - as well as one of the most handsome. You’d slept with a few pirates in your time on the seas and didn’t see the harm in adding another notch to your bedpost.
“Sure, but can I get changed out of my scrubs?” you asked with a laugh, throwing away the paper towels and your gloves as well.
~
A few hours later and you were sitting opposite Law in a nice restaurant, sipping on a glass of wine. Law was surprisingly good conversation, even if he still wasn’t sharing many personal details about himself. It didn’t offend you, you weren’t pouring your life story out to him either. This was going to be a date (and maybe more) before you parted ways, maybe to never see each other again. You took another sip as you listened to his stories about the Heart Pirates and their adventures on the seas, laughing as he told you about Shachi and Penguin tricking him into rooming himself into the women’s quarters. You’d told him about your research and your devil fruit ability and enjoyed a pleasant back and forth about your various medical interests.
“Your crew sounds lovely. It really is quite an interesting idea to have a submarine instead of a regular ship. I’ve always wanted to go on one but the rates are so high,” you said with a wistful sigh.
“My offer earlier wasn’t facetious, you’re welcome aboard the Tang,” Law offered with a cocky smile. He was heart stopping even when he scowled, all tattoos, brooding mystery and golden jewelry. But when he smiled? You were cooked, you wanted to lean over the small table and kiss him right there.
“I don’t know, I’m leaving in a few days anyway. I have to start packing and securing a charter to another island,” you said, rubbing your forehead. Moving islands was annoying and expensive but it was time to move along the Grand Line.
“We’re leaving after we restock. Why don’t you come aboard with us, just until the next island? I’d love to pick your brain further about anesthesia and dentistry, and we do happen to have other hybrid fishmen on the ship. I can promise you safe voyage,” Law said, sipping his own whiskey. You were considering the offer but something in your gut wasn't quite settled. Still, you would at least be safe on the seas from other pirates given the strength of Law and his crew.
“I’m not sure, I’ve never sailed with pirates before,” you said, turning your wine glass by the stem. Sailing anywhere was a gamble but when you sailed with merchants you had reason to think they’d want you to get to your destination in one piece since you paid when you arrived at your location.
“Bepo is the first mate and navigator,” Law specified with a grin. “His ears are even fluffier than they look in pictures,” he continued with a nonchalant shrug.
“It’s not fair to use Bepo as a bargaining chip!” you whined with a smile on your face.
“Pirates don’t play fair,” Law rebutted, taking another sip and giving you a smirk.
“I’ll think about it,” you said, finishing your glass of wine while thinking about Bepo’s ears.
~
You had a pleasant date with Law that ended with a small kiss at the end of the night. You wanted more but weren’t going to pursue someone who wasn’t that into you. Law seemed to enjoy your conversation and company but wasn’t physically affectionate. You weren’t going to beg for physical affection and it might be better besides since you were thinking of going with them. After a day or so of back and forth conversation with Law, you decided to travel with the Heart Pirates on the Polar Tang. Law had introduced you to the rest of the crew and you were pleased to see a few more human / fishman hybrids alongside Shachi. On the morning of departure, Jean-Barte was bringing your belongings onto the ship while Law gave you a tour of the facilities. You could see why he made a good captain and why his crew was so loyal - he was steadfast, smart, clever, and had a natural penchant for leadership.
“Here is the operating theater, you can keep your medical supplies here as well if you wish,” Law said, pointing out a medically equipped room. “We didn’t have to buy as many anesthetics as we usually do now that you’re on board, it’s quite convenient,” Law said with a hum.
“Well, I’m only on the Tang for a short time so you’ll eventually need them again, but I’m happy to provide that service for now,” you hedged. Law smiled at you despite the intense stare he was giving you.
“Of course, Dentist-ya. Come along, I’ll show you the rest of the Tang,” he said easily.
A few hours later and you were glued to the sub’s windows as it descended deeper and deeper into the ocean. You’d never seen aquatic life so up close and you were practically vibrating with excitement as you watched fish swim past the windows. You jumped as a hand came to rest on your shoulder.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Law said, standing behind you, his hand still on your shoulder. His body was right behind yours, you could feel his body heat radiating from his bare chest. Law had a faint scent of lavender and mint that was tantalizing your nose as he stood behind you. There was no doubt that Law was a handsome man and your body wanted his desperately. Still, you had pride and you weren’t going to be the one to make the first move. If Law wanted you, he was going to have to work for it.
“It really is. Thank you for allowing me on your ship, Dr. Trafalgar. Or, should I call you Captain now?” you teased, turning around to face him. You were so near that either one of you could close the distance and kiss the other but you made no such movements.
“Law is fine,” he replied, raising his arm to rest on the window over your head, leaning down over you.
“Law it is, then,” you said, raising an eyebrow as if to dare him to make the first move. You should have known that someone with enough mettle to become a Warlord of the Sea would take what he wanted, you thought as Law’s lips captured your own. His muscled arm wrapped around your waist and pulled you towards his bare chest as he pressed kiss after fevered kiss into your lips. Your hand came up to rest on his pec while the other grabbed at his bicep as he deepened the kiss, his hand wrapping itself in your hair to angle your head to his desire. Law’s tongue brushed against your own as you moaned, reaching a hand into his wavy black hair to pull him closer. You hadn’t been with anyone in a while, maybe since three or four islands back, so even Law’s slightest touch had you excited.
Law pressed you further against the window of the submarine as the light of the sun dimmed while the ship submerged lower into the ocean but you didn’t notice in the slightest. When Law gave you his attention, it was all consuming, you could think of nothing but him. All too soon for your liking, he broke apart from you and rubbed the pad of his thumb against your lower lip.
“Welcome aboard, Dentist-ya,” he said with a smirk, walking away from you. What the hell was that?
~
Your first trip aboard the Polar Tang was filled with merrymaking, work, and adventure. You were put with Ikakku and Clione in the women’s quarters, the other two pirates pleasant company to chat with before you fell asleep at night. The sub continued to sail underwater and you spent the time you weren’t working watching the sea in front of you. Something intangible within you made you want to reach out and swim in the deep, even if your devil fruit made that not possible.
At dinner on the first night you quickly introduced yourself to Bepo, who wrapped you in a large hug as you mentally ticked a box off your bucket list. He was softer and fluffier than you could have imagined as you rubbed your face into his exposed chest. You would have been embarrassed but this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“I’m so happy to meet you, Bepo! I always see your posters and - well, you’re my favorite pirate!” you said, smiling brightly up at him. The rest of the crew picked up their heads and grumbled, but no one seemed surprised. Bepo returned your smile with a toothy one of his own, his gleaming white teeth making your fingers itch with the desire to check them out.
“It’s nice to finally meet you too! Captain has been searching for you for years -”
“Bepo,” Law said with a small warning in his tone as he sipped a cup of black coffee and read a newspaper. Bepo was undeterred and continued to babble at you.
“Because he says you’re the best and he only wants his crew to work with the best. It’s a relief to finally have you on board so we can stop collecting intel on you -”
“Bepo,” Law called out again.
“Now that you’ve joined -”
“Bepo.” Law’s voice had lost the chiding tone it had before and was now a Captain’s order. Bepo pouted, his eyes going wide.
“Sorry, Captain. I was just gonna say that she joined us for this trip,” Bepo said with a frown, his lower lip wobbling. Law sighed but returned to reading the newspaper and drinking his coffee. Bepo gave you another small smile as an apology.
“Bepo, if you’d ever like me to look at your teeth, I’d be happy to. I’d have to do some research on polar bear mink teeth but it would be a privilege to work on you. I’ve never had the opportunity to work on a mink before,” you said, putting your hand in his to try and sneakily feel his paw pads.
“I’d love that! I don’t think I’ve ever been to a real dentist before, Captain has looked every so often but he thinks -”
“Mouths are gross,” you finished with a small laugh. One by one the rest of the crew introduced themselves and you saw the deep, loving dynamic between them. Shachi introduced you to his brother, Penguin, who was clearly also part fishman. You met Hakugan and Ikkaku, the other two women on board, as well as Jean Barte, Uni and Clione. Everyone was friendly and asked you question after question about your life and your work until the meal concluded.
“Penguin, thank you for dinner, I can’t eat another bite,” you said, pushing back the now empty bowl of stew. He smiled with a closed mouth, his eyes obscured by the cap with a penguin on top. Penguin was one of the quieter of the bunch, not getting as rowdy as Shachi or as up in arms as Ikkaku when they were playfully arguing.
“I was hoping that you’d take a look at my teeth in exchange for my North Blue stew. Or pay you with beri, I’ve saved a lot,” he asked in a quiet voice. “Not right now of course, when you’re rested and have time,” he hedged. You noticed he had a practiced way of keeping his teeth obscured when he spoke, nothing you hadn’t seen before in people with fishman genes.
“I’m not all that tired, being underwater is kind of messing with my internal clock anyway. And your Captain isn’t charging me fare to the next island so I won’t charge for dental services,” you said easily, standing with your plate in your hand to take it back to the kitchens. Law really was saving you a ton of money, checking out the teeth of the crew was easy for you to do in exchange.
“Oh, leave that here. Captain will shambles everything when we’re all done,” Penguin said, rising up himself. Intrigued, you put the bowl back down and looked around the room for Law. You’d seen Law use his medical knowledge but hadn’t seen him using his devil fruit power at all yet. You were curious about how it worked and wanted to see it first hand but didn’t feel comfortable walking up and asking him to use it. You didn’t mind when people did the same to you but yours wasn’t as dramatic and interesting as Law’s was.
You followed Penguin to the operating theater, noting how the chef was adjusting his hat over and over and biting his lips. There wasn’t a dental specific chair in the theater but there was a patient table that could be brought to an upright position. The theater wasn’t anything unique - it had racks of supplies for procedures, reference books, shelves of medications, and other supplies for the minor bumps and aches of the day. Penguin perched on the edge of the chair, adjusting his hat yet again. You saw a box of latex gloves on the table and slipped a pair on. Law’s hands were larger than your own - the gloves were a little saggy on your hands but nothing you couldn’t work with. Making a mental note to ask Law for some gloves in your size, you sat on the stool and scooted closer to Penguin.
“Would you mind closing the door?” Penguin asked, stiff as he sat back against the chair. You walked to close the door before returning to your patient. He opened his mouth only an inch but you saw enough to know what you were dealing with. Penguin was gripping the handrails tightly with his fingernails ripping into the cushioned pads.
“You don’t need to be nervous, I’ve treated sheepshead fishmen before,” you said with ease, reaching for your explorer. Penguin sagged in the chair like a deflated balloon.
“How’d you know?” he asked, opening his mouth for you just a little further.
“The evenly spaced rows of human like teeth. They’re great for fishmen but there’s not enough room in a human mouth for all of them. I can remove the second row and you should be set but as a warning, some of them may grow back in a few months. They can continually be removed and it should allow you to have more room in your mouth,” you explained while poking and prodding at his teeth. Penguin had rows of human teeth like a normal mouth but behind it there was another full row of teeth going all the way back towards his molars. It would be like having two sets of teeth in the same mouth set side by side. You didn’t know how he’d dealt with the immense overcrowding for so long.
“You’ve done a fantastic job maintaining your teeth, by the way. Excellent flossing, I can tell,” you said, maintaining a one sided conversation. Penguin couldn’t answer but you didn’t think he would anyway, he probably had a lifetime of shyness to overcome. “You have a lot of scarring, did you already have dental surgery? I’m not sure it was effective, but it looks like it was extensive and painful. By the way, it was a good call to choose Penguin as a nickname over sheepshead. Sheepsheads can be black and white too, right?” you said, poking around the man’s mouth. He grunted to show his agreement.
“Okay, we have a game plan. The procedure will take several hours worth of time, just so you’re aware. I think we should do it tomorrow, that way I’m fresh and so are you. Does that work?” you asked, taking off your gloves. You’d need several hours to take out all of Penguin’s extra teeth and ensure the open sockets didn’t get infected. It was more work than you anticipated, but you didn’t mind helping out a fellow fishman. Penguin nodded his agreement.
“I’ll have time after breakfast and I can ask Jean-Barte to make lunch. Will that be enough -” Penguin didn’t get to finish his sentence before Law appeared in the room, stalking towards you with a scowl. You took a step back, your legs hitting the stool behind you as Penguin sat upright in the seat. The stool spun and hit the clinic chair as you inhaled sharply.
“What do you think you’re doing to my brother, Dentist-ya?” Law hissed, his palm already raised with fingers lifted. You wanted to see his power but not in a way that had you taking a one way dip into the ocean. Law’s stare didn’t leave your face as your mouth gaped open, unsure what to do or say.
“I’m fine, she’s gonna fix my mouth,” Penguin said softly, putting his hand on your forearm. “She knew what was going on, she’s seen these kinda teeth before,” Penguin explained while getting off the chair. Law huffed but didn’t put his hand down.
“Room. Shambles,” Law said, creating a small blue sphere in his hand as he adjusted the white cap on his head to cover his eyes, much like Penguin. Moments later a paper towel was wafting to the floor where Law had been standing.
“He’s overprotective of the crew, always has been. I had some bad dentists in the past, did some fucked off shit and hurt me bad. Law also doesn’t like when the crew has any kind of medical test of procedure without his knowledge so now he’s embarrassed that he overreacted and room’d himself away back to his quarters. That’s just how he is,” Penguin explained with a small smile. You gave him a watery smile in return, scared by a fraction of the intensity Law would wield in battle. If that was Law’s bad side, you didn’t want to be anywhere near it.
You were a little shaken from Law suddenly disappearing from the operating theater but decided to talk it out with him right away. You didn’t like to let bad feelings fester underneath the surface and had always found airing things out made life better for everyone. Bepo led you to the Captain’s quarters at your insistence.
“I’m sorry, Captain’s not in a good mood right now -” Bepo said, raising his palms in a placating gesture.
“If he says he doesn’t want to see me, I’ll leave,” you said calmly, stopping in front of Law’s closed door. Bepo made a whine but left, allowing you to take your chances with the Captain. Taking a deep breath, you knocked twice on the metal. It was night time and the only illumination in the Tang were small lights placed near the floor to help the crew get around at night.
“Bepo, I already told you-”
“It’s not Bepo,” you called out. “It’s me, I want to talk about what happened and apologize,” you said, leaning close to the door. There was no reply as you lingered awkwardly in the cold dark hallway, your ear hovering near the door so you could hear Law.
“Room. Shambles,” was all you heard before you were caught in two strong arms. Law using his fruit powers on your was disorienting and you had a vague headache from the sudden movement and brightness from inside the cabin. You pressed on your temples as Law righted you to standing.
“The headache should go away momentarily, it happens to some people when I shambles them,” Law explained clinically. You grunted but gave yourself a small numbing effect using your left hand to speed up the process.
“That’s better,” you stated, now sitting yourself on the edge of Law’s desk as he sat down in his office chair.
“I didn’t know you could numb yourself,” Law said with mild interest as he steepled his fingers.
“Mmh, handy for when someone shambles me without warning,” you replied. “I’m sorry to bother you, Captain -”
“Law,” he said without taking his eyes off his reading.
“Er, right. I’m sorry to bother you, Law. I wanted to apologize for examining Penguin without your permission. I shouldn’t have acted on my own like that - he’s your crewmate and you’re responsible for his well being, I understand that now. I apologize and I won’t see any of your crew without asking permission first,” you stated, putting your hand over your heart.
“Hm. I accept your apology,” Law intoned, looking back down at the article on his desk. “You didn’t do anything wrong, I…overreacted,” Law said, the last word so quiet you almost thought you misheard him. “I have a complicated past. I worry a lot about the people I love, that something bad will happen to them if I’m not watching over them all the time,” he said, now flipping a page in the journal he was reading.
“That must be difficult to feel all the time,” you said, sympathetic to his plight.
“Shachi and Penguin are idiots too, which makes it worse. Last week they tried making a fire -”
“That’s not so bad -”
“While we were submerged,” Law said, looking you in the eye. You couldn’t help but laugh hearing about the foolishness of the pirates. Law massaged his temples as he continued to read in the low light of the ship. It was quiet for a few moments between you as neither of you rushed to say anything, Law massaging his forehead the whole time.
“Tension headache?” you asked quietly.
“Always.”
You raised your left hand slowly towards his head and gave him a small amount of numbing, equal to a strong round of ibuprofen but that would last longer and act instantly. Law watched you warily the entire time but didn’t stop your motion either.
“There. Feels better already, no?” you asked with a smile. Law blinked a few times and looked around his cabin.
“That is…incredible. I haven’t felt - I always have a permanent headache,” Law lapsed into silence as he took a few breaths and stretched his neck. “Thank you. That was an act of kindness I didn’t deserve,” Law said, looking you in the eyes. You looked back for a few moments but flicked your eyes down to his desk, unable to maintain the intensity of Law’s stare.
“Is that- is that my article from New World Journal of Modern Dentistry ?” you asked, incredulous. Law’s expression didn’t change but you thought you saw a hint of color rising in his cheeks.
“Good night, Dentist-ya” he grunted, still not looking at you. You were shambles to the women’s quarters seconds later, leaving you confused about your interim Captain.

Toothache [zayne x dentist!reader]
word count: 1k content: fluff, toothaches, dentist!reader, established relationship notes: no proof reading
Despite him devouring sweets like he’s on a personal mission to bankrupt every candy store, Zayne usually did his best to take care of his oral hygiene. But even then, he couldn’t escape the fallout from all the sugar he inhaled.
Acrually his day was super awful. First, he had to wake up with a horrible toothache, then he had to drink his coffee without sugar. And the large banner placed outside his favorite café announcing the new sweets definitely wasn’t helping either. He almost had pulled over, but the constant ache on the side of his mouth had made him stop.
The hospital staff was quick to notice his unusual silence. It wasn’t that he talked a lot, but still it was noticeable when he had been communicating with nothing but head nods and shakes all day. It was only Greyson who was brave enough to ask him what was going on.
“Just a toothache,” Zayne had dismissed their concerns as he walked towards to the ward.
Zayne hoped the pain would fade away by the end of the day.
His assistant stopped in his tracks, watching him walking out, “Didn't he just visit the dentist last week?”
It didn’t.
So now he was reluctantly making an appointment to the dentist after his shift. His hand hovering over the call button, nervously recalling the warning he had gotten from a certain person a week ago.
It wasn’t that he was afraid to go the dentist, okay, maybe a bit, but the real reason behind his hesitation was his dentist—his lovely fiancé—who was actually very sweet and considerate... until he consumed ungodly amounts of sweets, despite her warnings, and somehow managed to get two toothaches a week apart.
“Good evening, you've reached Akso Dental Clinic. How may I assist you today?” the familiar voice of the receptionist drifted through the receiver.
“Hello Miss Chen, it’s Zayne,” he cleared his throat slightly, “I need to make an appointment, is she available?”
There’s a small silence on the other side, Zayne tapped his pen on the table, the soft sounds echoing in the quiet room.
“Dr. Zayne! Yes of course, you're in luck, there was a cancellation this afternoon,” the receptionist said cheerfully. "Would you like me to book you in for that time?”
“Yes please, thank you.”
He ends the call after confirming the time, his thumb coming up to rub the side of his cheek.
Soon enough the call he dreads comes in. The ringtone he had set specifically for you breaks the silence of his office. Yet a smile appears on his lips as he sees your face light up the screen.
“Are you serious?” was the first thing he hears when he answers the phone.
he thinks you sound like an angry kitten, the corners of his mouth quirks up as he speaks.
“About marrying you? Yes I am.”
“You!” There’s a huff on the other side of the line, and he chuckles, “That’s not what I meant. What do you mean by another appointment? It hasn’t even been a week!”
“Actually it’s been—”
“Stop right there mister, I swear you’re in deep trouble,” Zayne listens as you speak, imagining you walking around your office as you lecture him.
It feels weirdly refreshing, the roles reversed, where he’s the one getting lectured about his health, and Zayne can't help but agree with everything you say. His heart warms at the sound of your voice, angry yet worried over him.
“You better be here right on time, and don’t you dare consume even a single granule of sugar during that time,” you warned, your tone firm.
“Yes ma’am” Zayne nods, even though you can’t see.
The elevator ding as he arrives on your floor and the receptionist looks up almost immediately, a bright smile plastered on her lips as she opens her mouth to speak.
“You can go right in, Dr. Zayne,” She says, motioning towards the treatment room.
Zayne stops in front of the room, staring at your name displayed on the surface before knocking twice.
“Come in,” Your voice sounds muffled from the other side of the door.
Zayne steps into the bright room, the familiar sterile smell of antiseptic invading his nose almost immediately. His eyes settle on you, sitting on the chair wearing your pristine white coat.
You raised your eyebrow at him, swiveling your chair so you can see him clearly, “Come and sit down.”
Zayne’s mouth twitched as he walked toward you. Seeing you so bossy and serious was a rare sight, and he wanted to savor every moment. It was amusing, to say the least.
He didn’t realize he was staring at your face until you spoke.
He looked at the chair, looming in the middle of the room, looking too comfortable to be trusted, its cushioning is almost inviting, but he knew better. He laid down, eye squinting at the bright light pouring right down at him.
He saw your eyes softening and watched as you slightly adjusted the light away from his face.
“What?”
Zayne narrowed his eyes and glanced at the closed door, then grabbed your wrist, pulling you a bit closer.
“Is this doctor always rude to her patients?”
You scoffed, prying his fingers off your wrist and poked his cheek, making him hiss lightly.
“Only to the disobedient ones.”
You laughed softly as his lips formed a small pout.
“Open your mouth, please,” you watched as he obediently did as you asked. During the next few minutes you carefully examined him, all the while trying hard to ignore his eyes glued to your face, following every one of your movements.
“You don’t have to stare at me so intensely, you know," You said as you slowly took out the small metal mirror out of his mouth. Zayne stretched his jaw, trying to relieve the ache from having his mouth open for so long before replying, “What if I want to?”
He watched as a small flush crept up your neck, disappearing beneath your mask. You looked away, clearing your throat as you gathered your tools next to you.
“So what is it?” Zayne asked, eyeing the neatly arranged tray beside you.
“Well, it doesn’t look too bad, but I can tell your sweet tooth has been working overtime,” You answered him while giving him a pointed look, “The sensitivity you’re feeling is likely from overindulging in sugary treats, it’s just your enamel taking a hit.”
You spoke as you walked towards him again, “For now, I’ll apply a fluoride varnish to help protect your enamel and reduce sensitivity. Then we can have a chat about your sweet tooth after we get home.”
Zayne closed his eyes as you leaned over him, while a noise, suspiciously close to a whine, escaped his throat.
“All done,” You gave a pat on his cheek, leaning back and signalling him to clean himself up.
Zayne rubbed his jaw with fingertips, straightening himself up on the chair. He watched as you walked back to your desk and cleaned up some files on it before removing and hanging your coat on the hanger.
“You’re done for the day?”
“Yup,” You turn towards him as he throws his long legs to the side, sitting on the chair upright, “you’re my last patient.”
“Okay,” You smile softly, threading your fingers softly in his black strands before pulling his hair back, making him stare up at you, “but one condition.”
“I’m very lucky then,” Zayne says, extending his hand towards you. You grab his hand, and he immediately pulls you in, wrapping his arms snuggly around your waist. He buries his face in your stomach, breathing in before speaking in a muffled tone, “let me take you out tonight.”
“Hm?”
You lean closer to him and quickly flicks his forehead, “That’s your punishment, and no dessert,” you whisper before pecking his lips softly.

pair: m. kesselring x reader, fluff
content: you get your wisdom teeth pulled and your boyfriend, michael, is there when you wake up, even though you’re fairly convinced he’s not actually your boyfriend. minor swearing.

you weren’t sure what you were signing up for when you first entered the dental clinic, only knowing of the check up and cleaning you’d scheduled. but weeks later, when you’re laying back in a leather dentist chair, high out of your mind, you regret making the initial appointment. getting your wisdom teeth—all four at the same time—removed was no easy feat.
your head feels heavy, everything in the little room too bright and blinding for your bleary eyes. the smell of fluoride leaves a tang in your dry mouth, your cheeks aching and stuffed with far too much gauze. michael sits next to you, a large palm pressed to his lips to muffle his overjoyed laughter and his phone in his other hand.
“how are you feeling, sweetheart?” a dental assistant asks you, situating your reclined seat back into its upright position with a press of a button. she holds a paper cup filled with cold water in an outstretched hand, blue latex gloves muddled against the garishly colored flower print.
“oh, my god!” you cry out, albeit a little muffled, throwing your arms forward. “it’s going to crush me!” you flail your feet, forgetting that you’re capable of standing and hopping out of the seat on your own. “make it stop, woman!”
michael laughs loudly, chuckle filling the room and causing his phone to shake as it records your outburst. “baby, it’s not going to crush you!” he tells you through wheezy breaths. “see! it stopped!”
you’re wide eyed and staring at him like a deer caught in headlights. “who are you?” you ask, throwing up an accusatory finger. “you’re—you’re not my mom! my mom is supposed to be here!” your lip wobbles and michael catches a glimpse of the bloodied gauze in your mouth, “she left me,” you murmur to yourself, dry lips sticking with each word.
“no, no, sweetheart,” the dental assistant says gently, pressing the cup of cold water into your palm. “your mom stepped out for a second, this is michael—remember?”
you turn your head and look at her, jaw slightly slack and breathing heavily through your mouth. “that’s not michael,” you tell her seriously. the lady’s brow furrows just slightly, concerned she might’ve brought in the wrong boy.
“no, baby, i am!” michael interrupts, assuring the lady that he actually is your boyfriend. she gives him a polite smile and leaves the room, her tone soft as she says her goodbyes.
you turn back toward him, brows scrunched together as you scrutinize his appearance. your head gives you straight thoughts, telling you that this actually is michael. “uh… okaaay,” you say, unconvinced even though your brain screams that you’re definitely talking to your boyfriend. “then say something about me, supposed michael.” you say his name in a questioning tone, arms raising to make air quotes.
michael watches you pout in your chair, cheeks rounded like a chipmunk and your eyes narrowed as if you’ve caught him. “okay,” he says, “i know that you’re probably wearing your spongebob boxers right now—the ones you wear for good luck.”
he watches as you quickly pull at the waistband of your sweats and gasp at the sight of your underwear—spongebob boxers like he’d said. your cheeks heat with embarrassment as you let go of your pants with a snap, “if you really loved me you wouldn’t have said that!” you say indignantly, arms crossed tightly over your chest.
michael chuckles at your outburst, standing up when your dentist pokes his head in into your room and gives you the go ahead to leave. “baby, you asked me to prove myself,” he says softly, helping you out of the leather chair and letting you press your entire body into his.
as he walks you through the hallways and into the small waiting room, you’re fully leaning into michael, head tilted up to watch his face as he walks you to his car with a look of determination. your eyes are practically shaped like giant hearts, fingers gripping tightly to his tee that the collar is pulled down to reveal his collarbones and a fading hickey. you think you’re drooling at the sight of him—or because of the cotton gauze in your mouth—your dazed brain isn’t really sure.
the afternoon sunlight casts overs michael’s face in a soft glow as he pulls open the passenger door for you. he doesn’t let you even attempt to get inside on your own in your current state, practically lifting you into his arms and placing you inside the warm vehicle. he leans down and pulls the seatbelt across your lap, buckling you in with a soft click and a kiss to the crown of your head.
“so,” michael says when he settles into the driver side, hands fumbling with his keys before bringing the car to life, “where we going, baby?”
your brain slowly registers his question, mouth agape as you look at him. he laughs at your expression and runs a hand through his hair.
“i dunno,” you finally say with a comical shrug. “anywhere with you.” you give him a crooked and dopey smile, the bloody cotton visible for a split second inside your stuffed cheeks.
michael smiles to himself, head bowed for a quiet moment before he sets his phone up in its stand, the bluetooth already connected and playing your favorite song at a comfortable volume. you give a delayed gasp and sing along with your slurred words. michael looks over at you and his smile widens, cheek warming at the sight of you.
“you’re gorgeous, you know that?” he says gently at a red light and you roll your eyes, hand gesturing vaguely to your bloodied mouth.
“yeah, right!” you say and michael laughs, the sound making you smile—and fuck, you really are gorgeous.

would you be willing to write reader getting her wisdom teeth out and being all loopy and out of it while leah takes care of her (their relationship is relatively fresh) and she asks leah if she wants to know everything reader loves about her and leah agrees, thinking it is mostly going to be like sexual stuff or about her body but reader lists almost exclusively her personality and stuff like leah being super eloquent and hardworking etc and leah is just very positively surprised and swooning at it
it’s just fluff basically but a bit cheesy lol
happy gas II l.williamson
leah spun her keys around on her fingers as she returned to the dental clinic, jogging up the stairs and shoving her keys in her pocket as she stepped inside, a slight shiver going down her spine as the air conditioning pumped down onto her.
"hi, i'm here to collect my girlfriend? y/l/n, i was told to come back around two." leah smiled politely, resting her arms on the counter as the receptionist nodded, stepping out to check with the doctor.
"she's just waking up a little from the anesthesia love, take a seat and you'll be able to see her shortly the nurse will come and fetch you..." she trailed off expectantly with a raised eyebrow. "leah." the blonde smiled, thanking her and moving to sit down in the waiting room.
shifting around in the hard plastic chair the footballer busied herself watching a the big quiz re-run playing on the small telly above her. "leah? leah? leah!" she'd become so engrossed in the show, even mumbling along answers that she almost missed her name called out.
shooting out of her seat she sent the nurse an apologetic smile and hurried after her, making small talk as she was lead toward the recovery room. "is that-" leah started with a frown hearing a familiar laughter echo through the halls.
"sure is. your girlfriend is up there with one of the worst behaved but most amusing patients we've had!" the nurse chuckled and opened the door, leah stepping in after her.
"lee lee! you didn't leave me." you beamed happily, spitting the gauze out as the nurse hurried over to replace it with some fresh ones. "no i didn't, i told you i'd be back right after your surgery sweets i just went to get something to eat to pass the time." leah smiled with a shake of her head.
"she's certainly a character." the doctor chuckled with a shake of his head. "oh yes she is." leah agreed, the two of you were a relatively fresh pairing, having gone on several dates and a prolonged talking phase you'd only been dating for around three months now.
"is that normal practice? my little brother had his wisdoms out a couple years ago and never needed that." leah frowned as she noticed your hands had been restrained to the arms of the chair with velcro.
"no its not, however your girlfriend seems determined to pull out her gauze and if she doesn't keep it in her mouth long enough to stem the bleeding she's in for a world of pain." the doctor explained as leah nodded along.
"if she's not pulling it out she's screaming, singing or yelling causing it to fall out." the nurse sighed as you rolled your eyes and leah moved to be by your side.
"love can you please be quiet for a little bit? if you don't keep the gauze in your mouth to stop the bleeding they'll need to remove all your teeth." leah warned as your eyes widened in fear at the lie and you were instantly silenced.
"well thats one way to do it." the doctor laughed as leah smiled smugly and ran a hand affectionately through your hair. "so! aftercare." with that the older man ran leah through everything she would need to do as your primary carer for the next forty eight hours.
your hands now freed and helped into a wheel chair as the anesthetic meant your limbs weren't quite strong enough to hold you up leah wheeled you out of the clinic, shaking her head as you blew kisses to all of the nurses.
"stop that! save some for me." leah teased flicking your ear, some sort of gibberish mumbled from your mouth which was still stuffed with gauze. another nurse helping leah get you from the wheel chair into the car you happily waved her off as she returned with the chair toward the clinic, leah slipping into the drivers seat.
"why am i in the back!" you huffed, words a little muffled from the gauze but with the drowsiness wearing off they were less slurred.
"because you got voted one of the worst behaved patients at that clinic and i wouldn't put it past you to grab or push something you dont need to up here." leah smiled in amusement as you scoffed.
"thats so mean! they really voted me that." you seemed genuinely heartbroken as leah pulled out of the carpark. "love are you crying?" leah bit down on her lip to stop her smile as she glanced to you in her rear view mirror.
"yeah! thats really mean of them, i was so nice." you sobbed and leah couldn't help but cover her laughter with a cough knowing this was only the side affects of the anesthesia. "baby girl you both threatened and tried to bite the poor doctor multiple times, thats not very nice." leah reminded, corners of her mouth curling upward.
"cause he wouldn't keep his dirty glove covered hand out of my mouth!" you huffed with a scowl, head thumping against the back seat. "thats because he needed to remove your wisdom teeth you muppet, which are in your mouth." leah chuckled with a playful roll of her eyes.
"lee lee i am starving, get me some food please." you demanded, kicking the back of her chair like an annoyed child. "you're not allowed to eat for another four hours my love, sorry." leah apologized, your protests falling on deaf ears as she continued to drive home.
placating your whinging and trying her best to keep you quiet so the guaze stayed in your mouth leah felt a sense of relief wash over her when finally she pulled into the driveway of her apartment where you’d be staying the next few days so she could keep an eye on you.
she scrambled out of the car and hurried to your door, opening it before you could and helping you out, your legs a little stronger now some more time had passed.
successfully getting you up and out of the car and into the house she helped you onto the sofa, dashing off to change clothes so she was more comfortable, changing in lightning speed given she didn't want to leave you unattended for a moment longer than needed.
finally after a half hour of squirming and wiggling and fighting leah at every turn to take the gazue from your mouth or get up and move about you'd settled, an ice pack resting on your jaw to help the swelling as your back pressed into leahs front.
"leah." you spoke up, tilting your head back and shuffling a little so it rested on your shoulder and she hummed. "do you wanna know everything i love about you?" you smiled tiredly as your girlfriend chuckled, already quite sure what would be next out of your mouth as she gestured for you to continue.
but to her surprise it wasn't anything of the sort that she'd expected, no cheesy pick up lines or suggestive comments, no cheeky remarks about her body or your time spent together in the bedroom. in fact, it was the complete opposite of what leah expected.
"mm well i love that you're so passionate. about football, the arsenal foundation, your friends, your studies, your hobbies, a very very passionate woman." you started, a slight slur returning to your voice as the pain medication you'd just taken started to kick in.
"i love that you make me feel loved, and safe, and accepted, and happy, and comfortable. you love me for me and you have never asked or expected me to change." you continued, leah stunned into silence as you affectionately patted her leg.
"i love that you're so well spoken, and you always know what to say. but sometimes you know what to say and you don't say it because you want to annoy me and it works! because you know too well how to annoy me." you rolled your eyes as leahs smile grew.
"i love how much you love your family, its so special to watch the bond you all have. i love how much you love football, as a player and a fan and a spectator and sometimes an unintentional gaffer!" you grinned lopsidedly, your eyes closed now as leah pressed a soft kiss to your forehead, hugging you tightly.
"i love how good you are with my neices, and how much my mum loves you, even if the two of you gang up on me now!" you cracked open one eye tiredly to glare up at her causing her to chuckle and run a hand through your hair.
you paused as you let out a long yawn, again shuffling back so you were laid down a little more and comfortable once again between leahs outstretched legs. the girl assumed you were finished, her heart well and truly melting at your sweet confessions.
"i love that you are unapologetically yourself and you stand up and speak out on what you believe in. i love that even though you can't cook to save your life you order me pizza and let me pick the movies we watch." leah was grateful the two of you were alone now as she was sure if any of her friends and family saw just how in love she looked with you right now she would have the mick taken out of her forever.
"i love how strong you are and how you bounce back from everything, and you always try to find a silver lining or a different way to look at things. i love that you're so honest and open about how you're feeling and what you need when you need it. i love that-" your last few words were barely understandable as you inhaled and exhaled deeply, eyes fluttering shut again as leah waited a moment before confirming you had indeed finally fallen asleep.
she could have cried at everything you said, and to be honest she was shocked she hadn't given she was basically a puddle of a human being, a pile of sap and heart strings and lovesick puppy eyes for you.
"oh my pretty girl, my best girl, if only you knew just how much i love and adore you. but i promise to spend each and every day showing you so, forever and always."
