Compilation of moments where Rick was a good grandpa. (Platonic only. No shipping).
I thought it'd be fun to come up with a simple list of times when Rick was a decent grandpa. If you can think of any other moments that I didn't list, please share and I'll add it to the compilation. Hope you enjoy!
Seriously, I really do hope this compilation grows :)
Rick gives Morty his lab coat. Episode: Full Metal Jackrick.
We don't get to see a lot of Rick being gentle or soft, but this was definitely a heart felt moment. Trapped in a blizzard, Rick gives Morty his coat and tries to reassure him. It's a simple gesture, but it does show Rick's gentle, more protective side.
Rick indulging Morty. Episode: Rickfending Your Mort.
So I think this is more character development on Rick's part than anything else. Season 7 definitely delivered a more open minded Rick than what we're used to. In previous seasons, Rick usually degraded and belittled Morty's ideas and adventures, some times even going so far as to purposely hurt him. But in season 7, we see moments where Rick actually indulges Morty's silly ideas without complaint or judgement. He doesn't get as angry when Morty makes mistakes either which is a huge character growth.
Rick holding Morty close while dying. Episode: Solaricks.
Another small gesture but super heart warming. Trapped in space and close to death, Rick and Morty huddle together to accept their fates and die in each other's presence. Considering the fact that they're both about to die, it's sweet to think that Rick would be perfectly content dying while holding his grandson in his arms.
Turning himself in to the government. Episode: The Wedding Squanchers.
Being one of the primary reasons why his family can't return to earth and have a real life, Rick turns himself in to the government so that they can go home and be safe. This was a bold move by Rick, and it shows just how much he secretly cares about his family. He even risked them resenting him, but their safety was more important.
Toxic Rick sacrificing himself to save Morty: Episode: Rest and Ricklaxation.
It's incredible. Even Rick's toxicity cares enough about Morty to sacrifice himself to save him. In this episode, toxic Rick is faced with a difficult choice and that is either to merge with healthy Rick or let Morty disintegrate. Being as narcissistic and mean as he is, it was quite surprising to see toxic Rick willingly merge with his healthy self. (Let's not even mention the part where Rick cried to Jessica about not being able to find healthy Morty).
Rick comforting Morty. Episode: Meeseeks and Destroy.
An absolute rarity in the old days of R&M. After getting attacked by Mr. Jellybean, Morty gives up and decides that he wants to go home. However, instead of belittling or degrading him about his adventure any further, Rick realizes what's happened and comforts Morty. He even goes so far as to complete Morty's adventure with a positive smile soon before assassinating Mr. Jellybean.
Pride and respect. Episode: Fear no Mort.
After his experience in the fear hole, Morty warns Rick not to go into the hole. And, for once, Rick followed Morty's advice and listened to him. Not only that, but he also acknowledged his grandson's accomplishment by putting his photo on the wall and walking away with a proud smile. This is good. This is character development. Rick respected Morty and he listened to him without argument or complaint. I hope we get more moments like this.
Rick sacrificing his life for Mortys. Episode: A Rickle in Time.
How could we forget the time Rick actually did jump into a hole for Morty? This episode was such a punch to the heart. In order to fix time, Rick and Morty have to be absolutely certain. But, one of the split Morty's fell through a hole, and Rick wasted no time jumping in after him. When he catches Morty, he became certain that giving him his own collar was what he wanted to do, and he did. He gladly gave his life to save his grandson.

Morty's kindness has been so different this season. In the past, we mostly talked about what he DOESN'T do--he DOESN'T pull most of the bullshit that Rick's pulled, he DOESN'T leave his family when they're neglecting him.
When he does take initiative and help someone, it backfires horribly. Everyone's worse off than they were when he started, including him.
For once, Morty's kindness didn't backfire. He actively tried to help Rick and received gratitude in return. Morty's empathy is finally starting to mean something instead of being another wasted aspect of his life.

No because almost all of Rick and Morty's interactions in Rickfending your Mort were so adorable like what!?
Morty you have no right being so adorable-
The whole gun bit was like so adorable?! Like I don't condone giving guns to kids, but like Rick just wanted to spoil his favorite grandkid in the only way he knew how. And like he was being a responsible guardian at Morty's school!? The fact that they called Rick instead off Morty's actual parents- Damn he really is Morty's dad at this point isn't he?
My boys being science nerds I love them so much-
More of Rick spoiling his favorite grandkid, the fact he just agreed no questions asked, he loves spoiling Morty, it's so adorable, Morty has a way of making Rick's inner grandpa come out
I love how Morty was so excited about Rick killing people- I mean it was themselves but still- It's nice to see them bonding
Rick genuinely thanking Morty without a sarcastic comment imminently after?! Our grumpy old man really is changing!
THE WAY HE GOT HAPPY WHEN MORTY WAS HAPPY THAT'S SO FUCKING ADORABLE WHAT?! THIS OLD MAN IS GETTING SOFTER EVERY DAY
This is so sweet I'm getting cavities- The way they both get happy when the other one is happy- The fact that Rick immediately wanted to share his excitement with Morty- The fact that Rick couldn't resist spoiling his grandson again- They both love each other so much what??? What? I am totally normal about this episode. No I'm not foaming at the mouth shut up.

Saw this post and all I can picture is the intro to Rickfending Your Mort.
Morty: You’re not a ‘pathetic little meow meow’, you’re 70 years old. Get up and get ready for an adventure.
Rick: Can’t I be both?
Morty: No.

After last week's brutal episode, "Rickfending Your Mort" was pure silly fun. I love the lore episodes, but serialized shows that grow increasingly dark get exhausting after a while.
While many shows (Breaking Bad, The Sopranos) grow darker until the last season is pitch black, Rick and Morty has lightened up a tad. That sounds bizarre after the last episode featured Rick beating the man who killed his wife and daughter to an unrecognizable pulp, but it's lighter in the sense that Rick's growing up and abandoning his need to be the world's smartest edgelord.
Similar episodes, such as "Total Rickall" and "Morty's Mindblowers," show Rick at his worst. Here, Rick isn't exactly at his best, but most of the scenes lean away from "cruel" and more toward "dumb and goofy."
Plus, he and Morty have some genuine bonding moments. "I don't like that he's talking down to you!" "Thank you."
Rick and Morty might have disliked the Observer, but he cracked me up. His voice, his pettiness, the fact that he hovered outside the house to antagonize them--and his design is great, too. Rick's a man who collects crystals every third episode, so I don't know why he had a problem being surrounded by crystals and geodes.
"Rickfending Your Mort" had a few cameos for long-term fans. I'm glad that Space Beth's still hanging around, and her clip showed that she really is her father's daughter. Jerry's reaction to his clip reiterated that he's the most shameless person in the family. Rick acts like he is, but nah--he gets embarrassed.
On another note, this episode surprised me because I totally thought that the final scene was the beginning of another episode: Morty encourages Rick to get out of the house, and shenanigans ensue.
The title reveal showed a picture of Blips and Chitz, leading people to speculate that "Rickfending Your Mort" was a follow-up to "Rick: A Mort Well Lived." Honestly, I think that was a one-off. Morty's already recovered from Marta's absence; he argues with Rick, challenges him and calls him out instead of rolling over and doing whatever he wants.
Morty even took initiative here, which is refreshing because earlier episodes made him a glorified side character. He saw first-hand what killing Prime did to Rick and wants to cheer him up in a language that Rick understands: wild adventures.
Rick doesn't know how good he's got it. "Unmorticken" made it pretty clear what happened when another Morty found his Rick drunk on the garage floor.
Talking to Dr. Wong must be helping because Rick was able to bounce back from this one. Morty had to nudge him out of it, but minutes after the Observer arrived, Rick was his usual snarky self and hanging out with his grandson again.
Letting go isn't Rick's strong suit, but Prime Rick and his original wife and daughter are gone forever. He needs to be here for the family that he has now. Morty and Summer are basically his kids. He has three girls that he can't say no to. Even he and his Jerry are close.
And now that he's endured a clip show with the most annoying geode in the universe, maybe he can stop watching his life and start living it.

About "Rickfending Your Mort"
S7EP6
I finally found something I want to say about this episode, which in many ways is just repeating what @hazelnut-u-out already said.
But I seriously cannot stop thinking about the observation made about Rick wanting to treat and spoil Morty 🥺
The non-specific guns bit was not only really funny, but such a lovely Rick/Morty set of interactions.
Before, this happened only occasionally, tbh I can only think of Cronenberg world with the potion, which went horribly, and then basically only through Rick Bot did Morty get some semblance of a treat - as far as I remember - like the lightsaber, however through this episode we finally see that Rick actually does give Morty some care... Or at least...
The way he sees it...
Clearly he's terrible at knowing what to give to a kid, but he's genuinely freaking trying you guuuuuys 🥺, he's, as Dr. Wong said, changing, just veeeeery slowly (enough for 70 episodes at least slowly*🤭).
I also really liked the scene with the Principal, because Rick is asking him to not be harsh with Morty, and is, guess what, taking responsibility!!!
He has shown that from time to time, but I will never stop praising this kind of progress and characterization.
All in all, even if not all the clips are my favorite amongst Interdimensional Cable or Mindblowers, I like this set up the best, because it placed both Rick and Morty as both causing trouble, and both being smol silly little creatures 🥰🥰🥰
For their standards anyway... 🤭🤔

'Rickfending Your Mort' was a pretty solid episode! Especially as someone whose favorite character is Morty, I feel quite content with this one. Lots of cute moments and plenty of his life with school, bullies, and so on!
Some general first-watch thoughts:
Morty is SUCH a sweet boy. I keep being taken aback this season by how much he loves/supports Rick, and I actually gasped when he said the ol' g-word as a name instead of a title. Interesting detail since we haven't heard him do that for some time?
Morty with his bulleted lists. Gotta love it!
I tend to like moments when we can see characters' handwriting. It adds that extra layer of intricacy to their personality. I felt the same about his whiteboard diagram in 'A Rick in King Mortur's Mort.' The adventure notes honestly reminded me of that scene in 'Forgetting Sarick Mortshall' where he keeps the little list of adventures that need to be wrapped up on his phone. He loves his lists!
There were so many cute moments between Rick and Morty. I liked exploring the goofy side of their dynamic and how they vibe together (on quite the autistic level, if I may be so bold). It was similar to 'Morty's Mindblowers', but these are the memories they seem to get to share. I appreciated that contrast a lot.
The glimpses we got of the Beths intrigued me. We definitely got some moments that made me think, 'Yeah, she's Rick's offspring.'
I thought it was quite sweet that Rick kind of wants to spoil Morty in a classic grandparent way but doesn't really know how to aside from giving him guns lmao. It was also cute how easily Rick gave into a lot of Morty's requests. He seems like such a pushover.
There were a few things that bothered me, though? None of these are major grievances, but I was so confused about the churro plotline in particular. They could've just... made the other churros sentient? Not a big deal, but a bit of an eye roll, at least lol.
As far as a more lighthearted clip-show episode goes, I really can't complain!
