Eagles, Poco Co-founder Randy Meisner Dies at 77
Bassist Randy Meisner, who co-founded Poco and Eagles and was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit in both bands, has died at 77.
Both groups announced Meisner’s July 26 death on social media, with the Eagles citing complications of COPD.
“Randy was an integral part of the Eagles and instrumental in the early success of the band,” the current lineup said in a statement. “His vocal range was astonishing, as is evident on his signature ballad, ‘Take It to the Limit.’”
Former Eagles guitarist Don Felder called Meisner “one of the nicest, sweetest, most talented and funniest guys I’ve ever known.
“It breaks my heart to hear of his passing,” Felder said.
Meisner co-founded Poco after playing with Rick Nelson’s Stone Canyon Band. He left Poco before its first album was released and helped start the Eagles.
“So very sorry to hear of the passing of Randy Meisner,” fellow bassist Leland Sklar said. “So instrumental in the creation of the Eagles.”
There he stayed until 1976’s Hotel California. As had happened with Poco, Schmit took Meisner’s place.
“May Randy Meisner rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.

Julian Lennon's introductory disc caused me to look into the discographies of those that have famous parents. While one can become a bit too direct in the accusations of nepotism here, one should be aware many like this know about their situation. Natalie Cole, for instance, didn't work within the idiom of her father for a very long time, she began as a soul singer. Nonetheless, her pieces from then did show she had a propensity for jazz as one can hear in her way of singing and the choices connected with the musical backing. To give you an example of what I'm trying to say – the song in the link resembles a cover of a composition her father did despite the ditty being an original one. Then again, Don't Look Back, the location of the tune, was the glimpse of her consequent jazz wins.

Across a Crowded Room: 2020 Videos
by Doug Reside, Curator, Billy Rose Theatre Division, New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center
January 15, 2021
Tumblr media
Since 2013, more or less annually, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts has invited new musical theatre writers, composers, and actors to Across A Crowded Room–a musical theatre incubator where strangers meet and write musicals together.  There is perhaps nothing more clichéd at this point than to note how unusual the past 12 months have been, but early in the pandemic it became clear there was interest in continuing the series in 2020, even in a modified way. Last year seven groups created new 20 minute musicals with the feedback from experts in the industry. The teams presented their final work, not on the stage of the Bruno Walter Auditorium as is the recent custom, but via pre-recorded videos produced for a special Zoom event. Today, we present those eight performances for the world to see. It was a difficult year in many respects, but the quality of the work created this year is among the best I have seen in the seven years of the program. Enjoy the 2020 Across A Crowded Room Playlist!

At EthCC, Vitalik announced PlasmaCash. [Outside, Karl Floersch was giving an abbreviated talk on the steps]. Pedro Segundo, just what the corona doctor ordered. Killer percussionist, drummer, beautiful soul, Pedro treated us to magnificent sounds, gentle humility, and a heartfelt message about human connection through music. From classical to jazz, Pedro studied, honoring his gifted  craft with the passion and unique vision he presents through it.
Ever since seeing Pedro at NAMM, I’ve been obsessed. I couldn’t take my eyes or ears off him. Pedro is the embodiment of dynamism. Equally, at home behind 18th-century-style kettle drums and a five-piece drum kit, Pedro makes every object he touches a channel for his incredible musical energy.
Pedro’s been the house drummer for Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club for the past 10 yrs. He’s toured Europe, North America, and the Far East with Dennis Rollins Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields, as guest timpanist with Sir Neville Marriner, Murray Perahia, and Joshua Bell and more recently with his own Solo Segundo, Dennis Rollins’ Velocity Trio, Judith Owen, and his Hammond Organ and Drums duo with Ross Stanley.
We talked Judith, Harry Shearer, Lee Sklar, Marcus Eaton, his early days in his native Portugal  with his talented pianist/vocalist, sister, their supportive parents, studying there, and then in London. Making his way to America, falling in love, and  manifesting his childhood dream.

Cruz was hired because of WHO he sounded like. The Story goes something like this. WABC Program Director Rick Sklar was listening to tapes sent to WABC, from DJs around the country who wanted to work at WABC. He…

B of A Awards $400,000 in Grants to Alpha Project and Kitchens for Good
Alpha Project and Kitchens for Good have been named as the 2019 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders® awardees for San Diego. The nonprofits were selected for their work to end homelessness and create workforce training and opportunities.
Bank of America Neighborhood Builders award provides a $200,000 grant for each honoree, a year of leadership training for the executive director and an emerging leader at the organization, a network of peer organizations across the U.S., and the opportunity to access capital to expand their impact.
“The affordable housing and job training programs offered by Alpha Project and Kitchens for Good are making an enormous impact addressing homelessness, workforce development, and food insecurity.  These are critical issues for our community,” said Rick Bregman, San Diego Market President, Bank of America. “We are proud to partner and invest in these fine organizations. They are rooted in giving people the tools, resources and respect they need to help rebuild their lives and advance sustainable personal and financial growth.”
Tumblr media
Crawford alumnus Bob McElroy, Class of 1973 and Founder of the Alpha Project (center)
Alpha Project is a 30-year old San Diego organization providing permanent supportive housing as well as emergency shelter and housing in addition to work, nutrition, recovery and support services to help more than 4,000 men, women, and children successfully transition out of homelessness.
“For most of our program participants, successful completion of our programs means permanent independence through education, employment, sobriety, and stability,” said Bob McElroy, Founder and CEO of Alpha Project. “Our vision has always been not to manage homelessness, but rather to end it for our clients by offering jobs not handouts, respect not pity, and empowerment not control.”
Kitchens for Good breaks the cycle of food waste, poverty and hunger through a combination of workforce training, healthy food production and social enterprise. It offers a tuition-free culinary apprenticeship with paid hours of training designed to break the cycle of poverty for people transitioning from incarceration, homelessness, and foster care, while helping economically disadvantaged communities overcome food insecurity.  KFG has trained more than 300 people and has an 86% employment rate with only 5% of formerly incarcerated students returning to prison, as compared to the statewide average of 50%. The Neighborhood Builders grant will help fund the acquisition of two new training kitchens, as well as hiring teaching staff and coordinators to sustain its expansion.
“For many of our students, this is their first opportunity to shed labels like ‘felon,’ ‘foster kid,’ and ‘homeless,’ and replace them with new chosen labels like ’employed,’ ‘cook,’ and ’empowered,’” said Jennifer Gilmore, chief executive Officer of Kitchens for Good. “By leveraging the Neighborhood Builder program, hundreds of additional students will gain the knife skills and the life skills they need to get and keep a job, and hundreds of thousands of meals will be served annually to those in need – a true win-win that empowers sustainable careers.”
Over the past 15 years, Bank of America has invested $240 million in 49 communities through Neighborhood Builders, partnering with more than 1,000 nonprofits and helping more than 2,000 nonprofit leaders strengthen their leadership skills. The invitation-only program is highly competitive, and with winners selected by local community leaders. *Reposted article from the Times of SD by Debbie L. Sklar of October 24, 2019
