Technically, it’s not in Toronto, but the last major sauna chain finally got a visit from our friends at Toronto Sauna.

Steamul is located in strip mall in Mississauga, about 10 minutes from the Toronto boarder. They have another location in Richmond Hill. There are about 4 Russian sauna ‘institutions’ in and around Toronto including the Banya Tea House which is just down the road from Steamul.

As far as strip-mall Russian saunas go, it’s pretty much what you’d expect in terms of layout and set up, with some nice amenities.

A refresher for those new to the site: Russian saunas generally operate in the same way – you get in, pay an entrance fee, get towels, a robe and locker and then you throw on a pair of flip flops and go bananas.

Inside Steamul, you’ll find a gerry-rigged wearhouse atmosphere that’s heavy on tile, glass and saunas.  The layout works pretty well, but there’s an under abundance of places to sit and relax (when it gets busy at least) and it’s obvious that they’ve had more facilities than space to cram them all in.

Existing the change rooms (which are nice, spacious and clean) you have a restaurant straight ahead and the sauna facilities to the right.

The saunas are hot diverse and plenty of them. The worst of the bunch is probably the hot tub.  Don’t get us wrong, it’s a fine tub with nice jets and all, but it looks like the type of jacuzzi you see in a suburban back yard, was probably bought from a hot-tub roadshow and just plopped in the middle of the room. You need to use a little stool to get into it, it only sits 4 people and it kinda cuts off other parts of the space a bit.

A few meters after this, you get the steam room , one of two highlights of Steamul. It a big glass room, done in a circular fashion that makes you feel like you’re sitting in a huge UFO.  The room is clean, the steam is hot and it seating many people.

To the left of the steam room, right behind the suburban jacuzzi is a cool pool of decent temperature.  Some of us at TS like cool pools to be a hint shy of hypothermia, so this isn’t that, but it’s cold enough and gets the job done anyways.

The coup de grace at Steamul are the saunas themselves. Let’s get one thing out of the way – avoid the electric Finnish sauna.  It’s a nice small sauna, but the heat is so weak it might as well not be on.

There are two Russian banyas with wood burning stoves, one of them is really, really hot.  The other is hotter and feels like this:

Beyond this there’s a nice little cozy relaxing room that rounds things out, a bit closer to the change rooms.  It’s nice addition, but fills up fast.

The restaurant is quite nice too.  While some sauna restaurants feel a bit like last-minute additions, this one is serious.  The perogies are handmade, the kvass is sold in 2 litre bottles and the food in general feels like there’s care put into it. You can also check out massage by a RMT (registered massage therapist).

In terms of gender splits, it’s co-ed Friday to Sunday.  Ladies night is Mondays and men get Wednesday and Thursday.  No idea how they’d respond to trans folks, but remember that trans discrimination is illegal in Ontario – so always feel fee to ask.

The layout of the saunas is as such that wheelchair disabled folks might be able to swing entry as well, given that most of the space is ground floor…only the hottest sauna and jacuzzi has stairs, but you should be able to wheel through the rest of the space, including the restaurant.

Other than that, price is pretty standard for a russian sauna in the area: $35 on weekdays and $40 on weekends.  Kids 5 and under are free while kids up to age 13 pay $12.

All and all, with Steamul, what you see from the outside is pretty much what you expect.  The steams and sauna are quality, it’s definitely worth the price, and heck! if you happen to have the remnants of Thor’s old hammer from the movie Ragnarok, you probably try to reforge that thing in the back sauna.  Seriously, it’s that hot.
