I've gotta do Richard Feversham for this one.
Tumblr media
Richard is from my project The World Turned Upside Down, set during the English Civil War period (the 1640s). A former actor, he's now a sort of proto-anarchist trying to carve out a life and protect his friends from both the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. He becomes a sort of older brother figure to Aibhilin, the Irish refugee who is the main character of the story.
Richard is arguably chaotic good, but he would never call himself that. He prefers the term "bastard." He has his own tag on my blog where you can see all his bastardy exploits in the name of...weirdly enough, kindness.
Anyway, he's very obviously based on British comedian Rik Mayall and I regret nothing.

I really like using Richard for facial expression practice lately. He and Dustin are my two most expressive OCs and they’re both really good to use to try out new facial expressions I’m learning to draw.

🖊️ Richard Feversham
Bastard Time
Tumblr media
I'm honestly never sure what I can add about Richard that I haven't already said about the bastard because I've talked about him a lot, but here's a few things:
Richard's best-known roles in the theatre troupe both were roles in which he played off Edmund: Rosencrantz in Hamlet and Crispinus in Poetaster.
Richard is always drawn left-handed because the comedian he was based on was left-handed.
Sometimes he'll stumble over words if he talks too quickly. Especially a problem if he's speed-reading since the long s resembles an f in his day (at one point he remarks on this and says "Jefuf Chrift" on purpose).
Richard has successfully spitballed Oliver Cromwell. Don't ask.
He's really good at writing intentionally bad Cavalier poetry and enjoys pretending he thinks he's written something revolutionary.
He's also really good at writing parody pamphlets. He does put out one notorious one in particular.
He likes announcing his entrances into rooms with "Enter Bastard," stage directions from King Lear.
On that note, he also has Thersites's "I love bastards" speech from Troilus and Cressida memorized.
Richard wears green most of the time because of a certain movie the comedian he was based on appeared in during the early 1990s.
He's prone to crying when laughing, so Edmund has no trouble calling him out on it because he's easy to catch.
Richard proudly taught Aibhilin how to flick Vs.
He loves making fun of William Prynne, who probably has no idea he exists.
Richard and Edmund burned down a theatre by accident once. It's a long story. Nobody died, though.

Not even a question. They're Chaotic Bastards, and they'll be the first to call themselves that.

Warmup drawing I did of Richard before working on some character art for my roommate. He just really likes being a ham, honestly.

Hello! For Richard Feversham (I am extraordinarily predictable 😂) 4, 28 & 48! ~ neil-neil-orange-peel ❤️
[questions here]
No worries, I’ve only had him around for like a year and I’m...incredibly attached, to say the least. <3
For the unacquainted who haven’t seen me talking about him, Richard’s the deuteragonist of a project I’m working on set in the 1640s whose hobbies include sowing chaos, making faces at authority figures when their backs are turned, and cracking endless jokes about noted theatre hater and professional killjoy William Prynne.
Tumblr media
He is not royalty in the slightest and took everything here from the props department of his former theatre troupe (with a very noticeable edit to the crown reflecting his favorite hand gesture).
4. Do they like cuddling?
He’s very much a hugger (and annoys Edmund with this), so yes, definitely. (Lucretia would say so too, at least when they’re not separated. As of mid-1648 they’re able to be in the same place again, though.)
28. If they could have one wish, what would they wish for?
It’s not really something he thinks about much because he tends to just go and do things and try to live them to the best of his ability, but he obviously can’t dismantle an entire society and rebuild it better so that everyone was more equal and nicer to each other by himself, so if he could swing that, he’d absolutely do so. For now, he’ll settle for being very happy about some of the ideas floating around at the moment and trying to make them stick.
48. What does their room look like?
If they’re at their home base (Amphilis’s family’s former estate that they’re all communally using now), the room he stays in is...obviously his. Despite a lot of things, mostly comedic writing ideas he jotted down late at night and tossed aside before sleeping, being scattered all over the place, he somehow knows where everything is and can find it pretty much instantly. He tends to bounce all over and the fact that he just throws things down in there and runs back out reflects that. It’s not a sty or anything, but it’s pretty clear that he keeps himself busy and organizing everything all neatly isn’t his highest priority.

I really should not have allowed these two onto Discord at all because it just inevitably descends into William Prynne jokes every time

Richard is a big dork who enjoys his Lord of Misrule status too much.
(Note the hand gesture on the top of his crown. These are from the costume department, but I can guarantee you he had someone adjust the crown for him.)

I made an OC server, added PluralKit, and have allowed Richard, Edmund, and Aibhilin to have free reign in there and they're all already being disasters

Okay but Sandy sounds so sweet and genuine and like she'd be someone super fun to hang out with! I am always okay with people who enjoy crowd-pleasing.
Meanwhile, here's an unfinished sketch I have of Edmund and Richard sitting at a pub bar with wheat stalks shoved up their noses waiting to see how long it takes other people to notice.
Tumblr media
Let's see, what's a good one...oh! Richard and Edmund used to do post-curtain call bits after performances of Hamlet where they revealed they (as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern) actually faked their deaths and survived and then screwed around and did dumb things to entertain the crowd to lighten the mood after the dark play.
Okay akdjdmmmmdjdk that is so pure and fantastic and I love them.
None of my OCs have theater backgrounds, but Sandy was a college gymnast, so she’s always had a thing for crowd pleasing and theatrics. Which translates Not Well™️ for whoever she’s hanging around at that point in time. Especially because most of the people she’s around are like super serious heroes with not a lot of down time. Sometimes, though, she’ll do kind of what Richard and Edmund do and try to get a laugh out of them, even for just a moment of comic relief.

Val is a licensed private pilot and wanted to be an acrobatic pilot as a kid before sailing took over.
I always forget we both have Vals! (Mine is, well, not a pilot. He lives in the 1540s.) But I’d love to see your Val doing some plane stunts!
I do tend to love giving my characters cool vehicles even though I’m not good at drawing them. The Historians (which I really should pick back up) is notorious for heavily involving cars when I can’t draw cars. Main character Ells is the most well-known, but she has a lot of co-stars who drive just as well as she does, so!
In historical terms, I tend to be stuck with horse-drawn and other animal-drawn vehicles, but that doesn’t mean I can’t make them cool. Edmund has a self-constructed chariot-type vehicle that his best friend Richard refers to as “Wheeled Death” because they’ve had so many close scrapes in it.

Ah, yes, Bastard and Bastard Jr. (aka Richard and Aibhilin). I’m about to script the part where they sneak into the Putney Debates together and Richard spitballs Oliver Cromwell, so this felt appropriate.

A bunch of sketches I did of Richard during a historian meeting I was in last week. I just love playing around with his facial expressions, but that’s because the comedian he’s based on was a walking facial expression reference so I’ve got a ton of things to toy around with!
