I love your poll about the house museums, i have been to many because it was an interest of my mother's growing up. I wanted to share about tour-able mansions in Rhode Island, USA. They are full of history and feel incredibly haunted.

Oh, in Newport? Yeah, those are really cool!

They were summer homes for the hyper-wealthy of (mostly) New York City, and really functioned more as event venues than family houses. The scale and grandeur of most of them boggles the mind:

(The Breakers, built in 1893-95 for the Vanderbilt family. This is the grandest of them all, but the one I've visited- Rosecliff -wasn't far behind.)

One of my friends used to work at the mansions- one organization runs all of them, as museums -and she says some are haunted. I'm not going to tell you which ones, though; that seems like it would spoil the fun.

Someone asked me how my nephew liked the Fall Out Boy concert! And did he want a t-shirt.

He luckily did not want a t-shirt. I say "luckily" only because wow, the t-shirts are a lot of money! I would have bought him one, probably, if he'd asked, but he didn't, and I didn't think he was into the band enough that he would wear it with pride around his friends (almost-teenagers, whatevs lol).

He did, however, scoop up a bunch of the confetti that floated our way at the end of the concert to keep for a souvenir, which was cute! I think he enjoyed it! He certainly paid attention to everything they said and asked me lots of questions about the band on the drive home (Do I think the guy in the hat makes the most money? No, they split it equally. How do I think he remembers all the words? He doesn't all the time. How did I remember all the words? I have worked very hard on basically ONLY listening to Fall Out Boy for five years now. If their first arena show was in Providence, do I think they went to some of the same restaurants we go to in Rhode Island? omg I never thought about that...). He said he had fun and he had a lot to say about it to his parents. And he did recognize some of the songs, I think probably from sporting events he goes to with his friends. He was also really into all the opening bands and spent a lot of time comparing and contrasting them and asking me how I think they decided the order and how did they know which bands were going to be there, etc.

He also, of course, loved being at Fenway and asked me lots of questions about the field and the scoreboard and the Green Monster and stuff. He's been to Fenway before but not in circumstances where we really had time to talk about the park, so we talked a lot about how old it was and what the names and numbers on the banners meant, etc.

He was also super-patient with me when I kept studying different merch booths to make sure I wasn't missing anything I wanted. When I suddenly found the magic 8 ball shirt at some random merch stand tucked next to a sausage cart on Lansdowne Street, I was like, "We have to wait in this line now so I can get that shirt," and he was so good-natured and really interested in people-watching and asking how many sausage sandwiches I thought the guy was going to sell, etc.

ALSO, best thing. When you get out of Fenway from an event, there's usually someone out there busking on bucket-drums, so I'm guiding him through the crowd on Yawkey Way and it's chaos and he turns to me and goes, "Is that what Fall Out Boy used to do?" and I'm like, "What?" because there are a million people around us and curbs and barricades and cars, etc., and I'm distracted, and he's like, "That drumming thing," and I'm like, "What drumming thing?" and then register the busker in the background and I'm like, ???? I was like, "You mean that guy playing the drums? No, they never did that." Because in my head I was like, ...how weird and random he would think Fall Out Boy was out here busking after concerts once upon a time????? And then he goes, "Well, they said that they used to play across the street," which they did, and they meant by that the House of Blues, which is literally located across the street from Fenway, and I knew that was what they meant, but of course my nephew has no reason to know that there's another smaller venue right there and so he concluded they just played out on the street busking for money and I just love this idea so much, imagine Fall Out Boy just standing on a street corner playing, Patrick Stump would CLEAN UP as a busker.

Honestly, he's a funny kid, though, so I think he was also extremely tickled by the city Target we went into that had TWO FLOORS lol.

Jazz on a Summer’s Day

JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY

They say that 1959 was the year that changed jazz. It was the period when the music broke away from its traditional modes to create new forms, specifically allowing soloists to break free and express themselves. It was year that America: the found its groove with jazz leading the charge. The list of albums that were released that year is just incredible - check them out.  

However when scholars and aficionados talk about music in that year four jazz albums are cited, each a high point for the artists concerned and a real soundtrack of the times and all four stand up to this day and somewhat. They are:

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue 

Dave Brubeck, Time Out 

Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um

Ornette Coleman, The Shape of Jazz to Come

All four may be different but they are equally sublime. They are timeless and to have heard them contemporaneously must have been something else. The albums, jazz and that period of time has established itself as an integral part of American history and it quickly found itself an audience and voice in the jazz clubs, nightclubs and parties on this side of the Atlantic as well. Jazz - especially Trad Jazz - was huge in the UK at the end of the 1950s and the aficionados, beatniks and modernists quickly lapped up this modern jazz creating friction - that led to numerous verbals and fist fights between the Trads and Moderns. For this was modern and new. Frightening, exciting, exhilarating and refreshing. 

Like the music the shift was rapid and the records soon found their way into the stores the length and breadth of the country. The kids snapped them up, played them, danced to them and nodded their heads to them. And whilst ding this they studied the album covers of all these new imported sounds on the Verve, Blue Note and Capitol labels. See, it was more than the music. It was also about the style, the clothes, the colours, the modernist art, architecture and furniture, and the graphic design. It was Hollywood PLUS! Britain was looking west. Cigarettes, glamour, bourbon, Ivy League clothing and jazz. As the legendary retailer and original modernist John Simons says on his company's website: "I came to art really through record covers, I was extremely interested in the Bebop revolution in America in the post-war years. I would always find myself in record stores looking at the covers. They were very often done by interesting modern artists, which reflected the music. As a fourteen and fifteen-year-old that drew me to it. To me the Bebop revolution made the Punk revolution look like right wing conservatives! So far out man… I can’t even tell you."

Then in August 1959 a small independent film was released that gave the UK modernists a visual interpretation of their new-found music. Entitled Jazz On A Summer's Day the film is a dazzling documentary of the Newport Jazz Festival held a year earlier on Rhode Island, USA. The festival was founded in 1954 and soon became the hippest event in the country. It wasn't long before Bert Stern, a young New Yorker specialising in "still" advertising photography, had the bright idea of filming the Newport Jazz Festival, in which 50 top-flight American jazz musicians and vocalists took part and to which jazzanistas in their legions flocked from all over. Stern has a wonderful gift for capturing the colour, style and panache of the venue, artistes and audience. He then intersperses this with film of the city of Newport from the harbour with its racing yachts skimming gracefully over the sparkling and shimmering water to shots of kids paying on the beach and onto the cool cats arriving at the event.And “cool” is the word. 

The music featuring the Jimmy Giuffre 3, Thelonious Monk Trio, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson to name just a few is scintillating. The multi-racial crowd has never been hipper and as day turns to night Stern and co-director Aram Avakian capture a vibe that is like nothing anybody had seen, heard or felt before in America or at one of the few cinemas that showed it in the UK. The reviews were superb, those that saw it had now bought into this whole new scene and Britain edged that little bit closer to the 1960s...

In 2020 the film was given a new 4K restoration by IndieCollect, and premiered at the 57th New York Film Festival - the trailer looks fantastic . It was meant to have a cinema and Netflix release but due to Covid this doesn't seem to have happened. You can however watch the pre-restored version on Vimeo and Youtube.

When the venue for the 37th America’s Cup Match was revealed nearly two years ago, it was that moment for entrants to begin working on the launch schedule. With just one AC75 permitted for each team, the later the launch offers more design time but less time on-the-water. The decision on that balance for the competitors is now being revealed.

Per event rules, teams are required to provide a 2-month notification of intention to launch their respective new AC75s, and that was done this week by Team New Zealand and Alinghi Red Bull Racing (Feb. 6) followed by Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli (Feb. 7).

Due to the constructed-in-country rule, the Kiwi team, with the greatest distance to travel, is paying the price for their choice of Barcelona to defend. Their local launch in autumn offers limited time in their new AC75 with local support on-hand for any issues before a shipment time of 47 days from Auckland to Barcelona.

When they schedule transport will be based on how much training time is needed in Barcelona before racing begins August 22 in the final Preliminary Regatta and Double Round Robin stage of Challenger Series. To their benefit, they will then have over two weeks to further refine their AC75 before the Match (see below).

For Alinghi Red Bull Racing, they chose time on the water to refine systems from an April launch until racing begins in the final Preliminary Regatta. While the sailing team sat out the last America’s Cup, the design team led by Marcelino Botin worked for USA team, so they are leaning on that experience and their Decision S.A build team near Lausanne, Switzerland.

While Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli will launch their AC75 in Sardinia, no launch date is yet revealed for INEOS Britania, though their AC75 has been taken out of the Jason Carrington build shed over in Hythe, Southampton, and may now be en route to Barcelona.

No news yet from Orient Express Racing Team who bought an Emirates Team New Zealand design package and have their boat in-build at the Multiplast yard in Vannes, France.
