Song Review: Steve Earle - “Yer So Bad”
Steve Earle didn’t completely erase Tom Petty’s sonic fingerprints from his cover of “Yer So Bad.” Yet, Earle’s contribution to Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, totally sounds like a Steve Earle song.
That’s because of Earle’s growl, prominent mandolin and spiraling steel. But Petty’s still in there via the lyrics, Earle’s vocal homage on the choruses and the cover’s rock ‘n’ roll rhythm section.
Petty’s associates couldn’t have asked for a more loving interpretation. And Earle fans will embrace this new Earle track as well.
Coming June 21, Petty Country’s 20 selections include songs from Chris Stapleton; Dolly Parton; Willie and Lukas Nelson; Margo Price featuring Mike Campbell; Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives; and Rhiannon Giddens featuring Silkroad Ensemble and Benmont Tench among others.
Grade card: Steve Earle - “Yer So Bad” - A

Rooooooo it's Friday and could I please have some Loghain & Mahariel for "I find that happiness is an extremely uneventful subject" from the Florence prompts please!!
awww THANK YOU here you go 💚
Characters: Rhiannon Mahariel & Loghain Mac Tir Rating: G For @dadrunkwriting
~~~
My friend,
They’ve given me the most awful quill. I’d rather have the burnt coal sticks again but they insist on ink. Ink’s for tattooing, not for paper, but whatever.
How are you? How’s Egg? I don’t miss his barking but I do miss you and how you’d talk to him. I hope Orlais isn’t too awful for two horrible Fereldan beasts. Although you have to admit, the outcome is a little funny. I realise this is unlike most missives you’ve ever gotten, but I don’t care. I need to look busy right now and this will do. And I wish to hear from you. I’m bored.
Are you happy? Is it possible for you to be happy? I’m curious.
Zevran might steal this note before you get it, just to prove he still can. I apologise in advance.
Dareth shiral (remember what that means?),
Warden Commander Rhiannon Mahariel (Creators, what a title. I hate it.)
[The note has been pierced through with what seems like a cut from a knife tip. The seal is broken, and around it someone has written something vulgar in Antivan.]
Commander,
I’m surprised your note made it to me at all, considering the condition of its arrival by bird. The rain has nearly made it illegible. All I could make out were ‘how’s Egg’ and ‘are you happy,’ which, all things considered, are strange questions to ask me. But I shall do my best to answer.
Egg refuses to be called by anything else, which gives these Orlesians a good laugh. He is strong and quick and gives his breed a good name. He puts to shame their wasp-waisted little whippet dogs. He misses you somewhat but otherwise grows fat on scraps from the table.
As for your second question, it is a challenge to answer. I find that happiness is an extremely uneventful subject, and when I had it in my grasp I did not know what it was. I am unsure if I can currently call this happiness, but at the very least I am oddly content. It feels strange to write, here in this strange land, but to have purpose here in the field once more is Maker-sent. I refuse to say such a thing to the dispatcher from Weisshaupt, however. May they believe they have set me on a task worthy of my many sins, lest they worsen my lot.
I thank you for your note. Writing my response has filled a dull evening.
I do indeed remember what your saying means, and raise you an old goodbye of my own people. Clan Clayne may be no more, but my mother would often speak their old words to me in a smattering of bad grammar and loose meanings.
In any case, mar sin leibh an-dràsta, my friend.
Loghain Mac Tir
Family Feud Nominations, Who is the Best Doctor Who Family
If I've missed a character out of one of the families let me know (within reason, I imagine all these families are massive in the EU, so prioritise tv or significant characters)
Currently, the only rule is no families may inculde anyone who is even ambiguously The Doctor, it'll get super complicated super fast imo
Any characters, eg River, who can link up multiple different families to create a single massive family unit will be treated on a case by case basis. If it is possible to pick one of the smaller family units that they are a part of to include them in while not including them in any of the others (in a way everyone will agree at least makes sense) they will be included in that family only, otherwise they will not be included
Please bare in mind when you are nominating that I am hoping to keep the number of nominations under 64 to run this as a mini-tournament. This is not a hard rule so if nominations do exceed 64 its not a big deal, just something I'd like everyone to bare in mind
would love your country music recs!! been trying to get into the genre but haven’t really listened to a whole bunch and would love some suggestions <33
YAY thnk u for reaching out. um most of these artists i havent trawled their entire discog but each has some things i really really love. many of them explore serious topics such as addiction, discrimination (racism, homophobia, sexism, classism, etc), and more (like a lot of less commercialized and more traditional country music does).
its important to note that there is a lot of crossover in country, soul, blues, americana, and folk, so some artists might be more leaning to one of the other genres but their relation to the country style compels me to include them.
i will also say that afaik these are mostly modern artists because nothing makes me fucking angrier than people saying that new country music isnt good. please pull yourself out of the country billboard top 100 for the love of god.
ok here it is: > yola (one of my faves, lots of crossover with soul in her style) > brandi carlile, maren morris, natalie hemby, and amanda shires are all good individually and are part of a collective called the highwomen (theyve collaborated with yola several times!) > robert finley (i could cry with how much i love his work, sharecropper's son 2021 is just fucking. perfect) > john fullbright > rhiannon giddens > gillian welch > shakey graves > charley crockett (his work all feels so fresh and unique to me, i never get sick of it) > courtney marie andrews > brown bird (one half of this duo has passed on so they havent made any new music since then, but i still suggest checking them out) > mary gauthier (drag queens in limousines is a total classic) > the war and treaty > sturgill simpson > allison russell > paul cauthen (he's collabed with orville peck, who im sure a lot of people here know! if not i rec him too ofc) > emily nenni > john r miller > lucette (shes had work produced by sturgill simpson iirc) > the secret sisters (very dear to me) > katie pruitt > shovels & rope (<3) > parker millsap > margo price ( i love her i love her i love her i love her what can i say. thats how rumors get started 2020 changed my life) > kaia kater > robert ellis (less familiar w him but i like what ive heard) > jaime wyatt > arlo mckinley (another artist i havent checked out extensively but ive heard good songs from him and like his voice) > the chicks (forever and ever <333333333) > amythyst kiah > mercy bell > justin townes earle (who has unfortunately passed away in recent years, i think 2020) > waylon payne > the devil makes three > evil > jason isbell and the 400 unit
i also dont want you to think i dont want people to listen to classics, i do. i love classic country music — if you havent checked them out, id especially recommend john denver, charley pride, dolly parton, willie nelson, hank williams, johnny cash, the carter family, glen campbell, kitty wells, robert johnson (hes blues, but hes mississipean blues and has influenced country music through and through), patsy cline, judy collins, waylon jennings, and marty robbins.
this isnt comprehensive but its what comes to mind right now. i hope it was helpful!!! <3
Name: Tancred William Sanderson
Age: 328 (appears to be in his late teens)
Gender: Cis male
Sexuality: Pansexual
Appearance: curly blond hair, blue eyes, supernatural and youthful beauty, angular face, 5’10 with a lean and scrawny build.
Personality: Acts aloof, flirty, and charmingly dumb most of the time, but that’s mainly just a façade to hide the pain, confusion, and loneliness he’s had to endure. He’s actually quite intelligent, and very talented with both his voice and his magic. He loves a good fight, but won’t go out of his way to seek one out; his cocky attitude gets him into enough trouble as it is. He has a soft spot for children, especially those who grew up in or are stuck in an abusive household. He feels a strong need to console and protect them, and to help them get out of their situations. He loves animals, as well, and Fancy always used to get onto him for bringing home strays. He is impulsive and a bit fickle by nature, has a fiery temper, and is easily offended by personal jabs. His sense of humor is often either dirty or dark, although he does enjoy a cheesy pun on occasion. It doesn’t take long for him to get attached to those who give him attention. He is reckless because of everything he’s endured, and often likens himself to a phoenix despite still being mortal. He’s also a bit of a trickster, having learned to use a mix of magic and his silver tongue to pass himself off as a psychic, but he never uses this to cause actual harm.
Likes: fire, phoenixes, learning new things (spells or tech), motorcycles, goth-punk aesthetic, tattoos, guitar, singing, piano, violin, courting danger, sex.
Dislikes: roses and/or thorns, Sleeping Beauty, remembering his mother and his old coven, losing control of himself in any capacity, burdening others with his problems, nightmares.
Powers: Tancred is a strong spellcaster, curse breaker, and potioneer, but he is by no means an expert. His specialty lies in casting and countering dark magic. He also has a rather hypnotic singing voice, but he tries not to abuse it like his mother did. Aside from that, he’s agile and scrappy in a fight, but no more so than most 20-somethings unless he uses magic to enhance himself in some way.
Languages: Welsh, English
Familiar: Black cat
Family: Rhiannon Sanderson (mother, estranged, deceased…?), unknown father
FC: Jamie Campbell Bower
Background: In the late 1600’s, he was born into a coven of witches who were notorious both for their use of extremely dark blood magic to gain eternal youth and beauty and for their tendency to use their lovely singing voices to lure hapless victims. When he was nearly twenty, he grew tired of his family’s evil antics, and confronted his mother about it, saying that he wanted to leave and not be forced into their dastardly deeds anymore. Of course, that led to a massive argument, which culminated in his mother cursing him into an eternal slumber to shut him up. She couldn’t bear to watch him waste away, however, so she altered the curse to preserve his youth and beauty until he was finally awoken by a kiss from another magic user. She then hid him away where she was sure that no one from her coven could find him. It took a little over three centuries, but Tancred was finally pulled from his slumber by a gentle kiss on the forehead from a presence that had disappeared by the time he opened his eyes. For over a year, he wandered from place to place, trying to acclimate himself to the modern world while avoiding most people, but when a kind and stubborn witch named Fancy offered to take him in, he found it hard to resist her Southern hospitality. Together with their new coven, they worked in the shadows to keep the nearby city safe from supernatural threats, ensure that local farmers have good harvests every year, and preserve the good health of their fellow Appalachian folk. After a series of disagreements and long arguments, however, Tancred eventually left the coven and moved back up to Salem to start a new life.
Salem has been good to him so far! The people are friendly, and witches are celebrated rather than persecuted, which took him a while to get used to. He makes a decent living as a “psychic” despite not being remotely skilled at divination. By utilizing a mix of sleight of hand, illusions, actual curse-breaking and/or protective wards, and excellent social skills, he’s able to fake it until he makes it. Tarot is his specialty for this reason, though the crystal ball is always a crowd pleaser for the more gullible folks. Most of his customers are tourists looking for a bit of fun, anyway! But for those seeking to shed some dark attachment or improve their terrible luck, he’ll genuinely do his best to help.
Playlist: The Drive Home
(This, of course, is not universal, and represents my personal tastes)
That hazy, dreamlike feeling of drifting along back home after some sort of gathering - A party? A good dinner out? A carnival or fair? Whatever it was, it was pretty great, but you're all feeling a little run down, now. Maybe there's a light rain or snow in the air, reflecting the streetlights to wash over you and the car completely. Or maybe you're out on the highway, under an open sky of stars. There's perhaps a little touch of melancholy, but in a fond sort of way. Nobody's jumping up and rocking out, but everyone's singing along to those classics they recognize - You're all keeping each other mutually-awake, if nothing else. You're going to cross through this liminal space all together, and stretch it out , so that you can hold on to that wonderful feeling from before, for as long as you can.
Fleetwood Mac - Dreams [Honourable Mention to Rhiannon]
Elton John - Tiny Dancer
The Beatles - Hey Jude
Don McLean - American Pie
Tom Cochran & Red Rider - Good Times
Jimi Hendrix - Angel
Jeff Healey - Angel [Yeah I honestly couldn't decide. And I know that the Hendrix original is the one most people know, I'm putting Healey hear because more people should know him and his work]
David Bowie - Starman [Yes, I'm going with this over Space Oddity, though that one probably would fit as well. I'd put Ashes to Ashes ahead of it too though]
Paul McCartney & Wings - Band on the Run
BareNaked Ladies - Brian Wilson
Foo Fighters - Baker Street [The original by Gerry Rafferty would also work, depending on your personal preferences]
Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
Blind Melon - No Rain
Blue Oyster Cult - Burnin' For You
Jay & The Americans - Come a Little Bit Closer
Tommy James and The Shondells - Crimson and Clover [Perhaps Joan Jett & The Blackhearts' version instead, if you'd prefer]
Ninja Sex Party - Everybody Wants to Rule The World [Yes, specifically their cover. The Tears for Fears original is fine too, but I really like their version, okay? The song itself is still familiar enough that I don't think it throws off the vibe I'm going for here]
Queen - Somebody to Love
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
REM - Man on The Moon [Honourable Mention to Losing My Religion]
Boston - More Than a Feeling
The Cars - Just What I Needed
The Guess Who - No Sugar Tonight // New Mother Nature
Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road
Andy Kim - Rock Me Gently
Blue Rodeo - Lost Together
Glen Campbell - Southern Nights
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline
Darius Rucker - Wagon Wheel [Old Crow Medicine Show's original is very good too.]
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in The Jar
David Lee Murphy - Dust on The Bottle
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen
The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star
Our Lady Peace - Somewhere Out There
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Have You Ever Seen The Rain?
Semisonic - Closing Time
Night Ranger - Sister Christian
The Outfield - Your Love
Allman Brothers Band - Jessica
Styx - Mr. Roboto
Avicii - Hey Brother
Fastball - The Way
The Wallflowers - One Headlight
Counting Crows - Mr. Jones
Mumford and Sons - Little Lion Man
John Denver - Take Me Home, Country Roads [Memey-ness or not, it's an all-time great sing-a-long]
The Moody Blues - Your Wildest Dreams
Mika - Grace Kelly
The Cure - Friday I'm in Love
Spin Doctors - Two Princes
The Weeknd - Save Your Tears
Cage The Elephant - Ain't No Rest for The Wicked
The Heavy - Short Change Hero [Yes, I have deep nostalgia for the first two Borderlands games, or at least the vibe of them. Why do you ask?]
Goo Goo Dolls - Black Balloon [Maybe Iris instead. As upbeat as Slide is, I think the subject matter of the song is perhaps a bit too heavy for the concept I'm going for here]
Don Henley - The Boys of Summer
Looking Glass - Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)
Traveling Wilburys - Handle With Care
Garth Brooks - Hard Luck Woman [Cover of a Kiss song. Maybe a bit obscure, per my guidelines. But y'know what,?I've let other covers I've liked than originals better go in here instead of the originals. So screw it. It makes the cut!]
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded By The Light (Technically a Bruce Springsteen cover, but this is so very much the definitive version)
Billy Joel - Piano Man (Although, Only the Good Die Young, For the Longest Time, and River of Dreams are strong contenders)
Toto - Africa
Baltimora - Tarzan Boy
Van Halen - Dreams [Just edges out Right Now]
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Into The Great Wide Open
Steve Miller Band - Rock'n Me
.38 Special - Back Where You Belong
ABBA - Dancing Queen
Blondie - The Tide Is High
Eagle-Eye Cherry - Save Tonight
Lady A - Need You Now
The Rolling Stones - Wild Horses
Rush - Limelight
Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah - Lake Shore Drive
Cyndi Lauper - I Drove All Night [Contrast with Roy Orbison's version]
Mr Big - To Be With You
Matchbox Twenty - 3AM
Personality test
Best song to hear on the radio in a car full of friends when it's dark and warm and raining outside and you're all kinda tired but still having a good time
The song that would play in the movie about your life at the part where you finally snap and enter a violent, freewheeling action scene
The worst song you can imagine playing in the background of a deeply personal or intimate moment
A song you'd want played at your funeral
A song you WOULD NOT WANT played at your funeral
Playlist: The Drive Home
(This, of course, is not universal, and represents my personal tastes)
That hazy, dreamlike feeling of drifting along back home after some sort of gathering - A party? A good dinner out? A carnival or fair? Whatever it was, it was pretty great, but you're all feeling a little run down, now. Maybe there's a light rain or snow in the air, reflecting the streetlights to wash over you and the car completely. Or maybe you're out on the highway, under an open sky of stars. There's perhaps a little touch of melancholy, but in a fond sort of way. Nobody's jumping up and rocking out, but everyone's singing along to those classics they recognize - You're all keeping each other mutually-awake, if nothing else. You're going to cross through this liminal space all together, and stretch it out , so that you can hold on to that wonderful feeling from before, for as long as you can.
Fleetwood Mac - Dreams [Honourable Mention to Rhiannon]
Elton John - Tiny Dancer
The Beatles - Hey Jude
Don McLean - American Pie
Tom Cochran & Red Rider - Good Times
Jimi Hendrix - Angel
Jeff Healey - Angel [Yeah I honestly couldn't decide. And I know that the Hendrix original is the one most people know, I'm putting Healey hear because more people should know him and his work]
David Bowie - Starman [Yes, I'm going with this over Space Oddity, though that one probably would fit as well. I'd put Ashes to Ashes ahead of it too though]
Paul McCartney & Wings - Band on the Run
BareNaked Ladies - Brian Wilson
Foo Fighters - Baker Street [The original by Gerry Rafferty would also work, depending on your personal preferences]
Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
Blind Melon - No Rain
Blue Oyster Cult - Burnin' For You
Jay & The Americans - Come a Little Bit Closer
Tommy James and The Shondells - Crimson and Clover [Perhaps Joan Jett & The Blackhearts' version instead, if you'd prefer]
Ninja Sex Party - Everybody Wants to Rule The World [Yes, specifically their cover. The Tears for Fears original is fine too, but I really like their version, okay? The song itself is still familiar enough that I don't think it throws off the vibe I'm going for here]
Queen - Somebody to Love
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
REM - Man on The Moon [Honourable Mention to Losing My Religion]
Boston - More Than a Feeling
The Cars - Just What I Needed
The Guess Who - No Sugar Tonight // New Mother Nature
Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road
Andy Kim - Rock Me Gently
Blue Rodeo - Lost Together
Glen Campbell - Southern Nights
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline
Darius Rucker - Wagon Wheel [Old Crow Medicine Show's original is very good too.]
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in The Jar
David Lee Murphy - Dust on The Bottle
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen
The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star
Our Lady Peace - Somewhere Out There
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Have You Ever Seen The Rain?
Semisonic - Closing Time
Night Ranger - Sister Christian
The Outfield - Your Love
Allman Brothers Band - Jessica
Styx - Mr. Roboto
Avicii - Hey Brother
Fastball - The Way
The Wallflowers - One Headlight
Counting Crows - Mr. Jones
Mumford and Sons - Little Lion Man
John Denver - Take Me Home, Country Roads [Memey-ness or not, it's an all-time great sing-a-long]
The Moody Blues - Your Wildest Dreams
Mika - Grace Kelly
The Cure - Friday I'm in Love
Spin Doctors - Two Princes
The Weeknd - Save Your Tears
Cage The Elephant - Ain't No Rest for The Wicked
The Heavy - Short Change Hero [Yes, I have deep nostalgia for the first two Borderlands games, or at least the vibe of them. Why do you ask?]
Goo Goo Dolls - Black Balloon [Maybe Iris instead. As upbeat as Slide is, I think the subject matter of the song is perhaps a bit too heavy for the concept I'm going for here]
Don Henley - The Boys of Summer
Looking Glass - Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)
Traveling Wilburys - Handle With Care
Garth Brooks - Hard Luck Woman [Cover of a Kiss song. Maybe a bit obscure, per my guidelines. But y'know what,?I've let other covers I've liked than originals better go in here instead of the originals. So screw it. It makes the cut!]
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded By The Light (Technically a Bruce Springsteen cover, but this is so very much the definitive version)
Billy Joel - Piano Man (Although, Only the Good Die Young, For the Longest Time, and River of Dreams are strong contenders)
Toto - Africa
Baltimora - Tarzan Boy
Van Halen - Dreams [Just edges out Right Now]
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Into The Great Wide Open
Steve Miller Band - Rock'n Me
.38 Special - Back Where You Belong
ABBA - Dancing Queen
Blondie - The Tide Is High
Eagle-Eye Cherry - Save Tonight
Lady A - Need You Now
The Rolling Stones - Wild Horses
Rush - Limelight
Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah - Lake Shore Drive
Cyndi Lauper - I Drove All Night [Contrast with Roy Orbison's version]
Mr Big - To Be With You
Matchbox Twenty - 3AM
Guess who finally finished his long-overdue playlist project?
That's right, I finally did!
Here's a chain of those playlists separate from the original set of questions Teaboot posed, so that they can be found in one convenient place:
