Revit LT vs. full Revit for sole practitioners
I've been having this conversation a lot with other sole practitioners, so I thought I'd write down the main points as a resource for anyone who might find it helpful.
When I first started my business, I carried full Revit because I was used to it and there were a couple of features I couldn't live without. After a while, I started to question whether the overhead was worth it, so I did a little deeper comparison and decided to give LT a try. It's been working for me for the last couple of years, as I can't currently justify the price difference (currently $430 vs. $2545 for an annual subscription). Here are the main differences as they impact me as a sole practitioner:
Can't have multiple people working in a model at the same time. If you need this capability, it'll be a dealbreaker for LT.
No rendering/plug-ins or decals - not a huge deal for me right now, but could become an issue eventually
No worksets or design options - I used these in a limited capacity anyway; instead of design options I just treat Revit like Sketchup and make copies of the model, but my projects are small enough that this works EDIT 5/2/22: I shared this post in an online community and someone pointed out that you actually CAN use design options in Revit LT, you just have to turn them on. Here's a short video explaining how to do it.
No model-in-place - This was the hardest one for me to let go of, but ultimately I just had to change my mindset to modeling families and then bringing them into the model. I couldn't justify the price tag for this one feature. It's a pain sometimes but it's worked out OK
Can't manipulate topo/slabs much - This is annoying sometimes but usually not a problem; if it's an issue on a particular project I have solved it in the past by outsourcing the site model to someone with full Revit
Can't import railing types!! This is truly a PITA. You can, however, copy/paste.
No trusses - This one could be a huge bummer, depending on your project types. There isn't really a good workaround, other than modeling your trusses
As far as coordinating with consultants goes, I haven't had any issues yet. At the scale I work at, many of my consultants want .dwg files for their backgrounds, so I simply export these, which LT does just fine. An LT coordination model can also be opened by someone with full Revit, and vice versa.
