Today is Chinese New Year Eve and family members from near and far gathered together for the most important get-together meal of the entire year – The Reunion Dinner (团圆饭/年夜饭/团年饭). Now that the restriction for the max number of diners at a table had been lifted, we are back to Xing Hua Delights (回味轩兴化菜馆) for the get-together.
We started the meal with a small serving of Thai Style Bean Curd (泰式豆腐). Crispy on the outside and silky soft inside, the warm tofu is topped with julienned cucumber, carrot and onion with a spicy sweet and sour sauce over it. It is a refreshing appetizer to open up the palate.
Next up, the Amaranth Soup (上汤苋菜) in a milky broth of three different kinds of egg – chicken egg, salted duck egg and century egg (皮蛋). The homey soup and vegetable is well liked by everyone around the table.
And for the carnivores, the boneless Pork Ribs Deluxe (排骨王) with sprinkle of sesame seeds. It is succulent and sweetish with hints of tanginess. Here is another tofu dish, the Homemade Salted Egg Crispy Tofu (自制咸蛋脆皮豆腐). Love that fragrant savoury salted egg yolk sauce clinging to the golden brown deep-fried bean curd and seafood paste parcels.
Sister-in-law wanted this Salted Egg Chicken (咸蛋鸡) so we ordered a small portion. Sis commented that it was a little dry but I like the fragrant sauce and it went well with the rice.

Summary: Going to Jackson for a wedding seems like just a friend doing a favor for a friend, but old acquaintances and new attitudes don't always make for a great combination.
WARNINGS: 18+ Only! Mature and Explicit, age gap (reader is 39, Joel is 56), takes place June - December 2023, mention of eating food/drinking alcohol, mention of divorce, language, No Smut, mention of infidelity, post-divorce strife, Ellie is kind of a delinquent (will be discussed in next chapter), brief glimpse of lumberjack!Joel, forced proximity, mutual pining (mostly on Joel's side), Joel tries to be an authority figure and Ellie ain't having it
Author's Note: thank you to everyone who's stuck around to read this and been very patient with me! my birthday was last week so there was a lot going on, otherwise I would have had this out earlier. So.. we've got these two together again, but the reunion isn't exactly a happy one..
Series Masterlist
June 2023 San Francisco, CA
It's not until you're seated in a booth at the trendy new sushi bar downtown that you begin to doubt your agreement to meet Sarah while she's in town for a work conference. You'd said yes initially, then waffled about it in the coming weeks, and now you're drinking sake to fortify yourself. Your therapist told you it's a bad idea to mix alcohol with reacquaintances, but you're already refilling the ochoko when you look up for a moment and spy Sarah approaching you through the crowded restaurant.
You've never thought about what she might look like. A part of you imagined that you'd be sitting down to dinner with the same kid from twenty years ago. But Sarah has grown up, in her thirties, a successful attorney. And, from what you gathered by spying on Joel's Facebook account years ago, she's also a mother.
"Thank you for meeting me," she says, embracing you the way women always embrace each other, something you never got used to because of you lack of female friends. She smells like expensive perfume, the kind you spray on yourself at Sephora just for fun, and is dressed in a white maxi dress with blue floral print. She looks amazing, and you silently berate yourself for wearing black distressed jeans, a Rolling Stones tee and your lucky red Converse.
"You're all grown up," you remark, a hint of sadness in your tone.
"You look beautiful," she says in return. "You don't even look like twenty years have passed."
Little does she know you spent forty dollars on a concealer to hide your undereye circles, and were talked into spending another twenty on something called a lip oil that makes your lips sticky and tastes like cheap pineapple, which you wiped away on the restaurant napkin as soon as you sat down.
Settling down to small talk, you neglect to look at your menus, annoying the waitress who stops by to take your order three times and ultimately just comes by to refill your drinks.
Sarah lives out east in Boulder, Colorado, practicing law alongside her fiance Theo. They have a son together, ten year old Finn.
"Theo proposed when I got pregnant," Sarah says. "But I wanted us to build a foundation first, construct our little family. And when the time was right, I proposed to him."
She shows off pictures of Finn, sharing the funny and cute anecdotes that parents do, and when she asks about Ellie you do the same: Ellie in the hospital, just hours old, wearing a tiny knitted pink and blue hat as she glowered at the camera; Ellie at four, playing T-ball, one of just two girls on an all-boys team; Ellie at ten winning the school spelling bee.
Being an Army wife gave you the opportunity to see the world, experience things you otherwise wouldn't. Japan, Germany, Italy.. you were happy that Ellie got to experience them too.
But even that couldn't save your marriage to Justin.
There were infidelities on both sides, and when you found out about his, it was almost a relief to discover he was not Nice Justin, just a man who had affairs. In the midst of your own liaisons, you felt vindicated, though the fun wore off easier than it had in your youth.
Filing for divorce was only difficult considering Ellie. Justin didn't fight it, handing over full custody. It was the only part of the process that broke your heart. Now you were just repeating a history of broken families. Once the divorce was finalized it was like throwing up after being nauseous for so long, just good to get it out of your system.
("I kept my married name, just to piss off the new wife," you tell Sarah, who snickers in response. "That's understandable.")
Settling in San Francisco where you like the neighborhood and the schools, life seems easier.
"Ninth grade history," you answer when Sarah asks what you teach. "I introduce Romeo & Juliet to kids who are the same age as those characters."
And now, with the niceties out of the way, there's nothing left to talk about but the past.
You've been dreading it.
"I never apologized for what I did," she says.
You nod, inviting her to continue.
"You probably know this by now, but I was the one who called your mom."
Of course you knew it all along, but hearing it is a different thing.
She got her number from your phone when you weren't around. And, unable to get the picture of you and her dad out of her mind, she dialed it one day and explained to your mom what she saw.
"Why?" you ask.
She averts her eyes a brief moment. "Deep down I always knew there was something going on with you and my dad.. the day of my party when I walked in on you, it was a rude awakening. It's one thing to know something is going on, and another thing to witness it. And later, when you left, I realized I'd taken it too far."
Sarah goes quiet and so do you, despite the chatter in the busy restaurant.
You ask, "Did Joel ever find out it was you?"
She nods. "I told him later.. after he started seeing that awful girl you were friends with."
That part of your life, the bubble of jealousy and despair in which you made your home, seems so long ago. "Hailey," you remind her.
"Yeah.. she didn't last very long. Dad broke things off when he caught her stealing from him.. and when that happened I realized he was just better off with you. But.. by then it was too late."
By then you were already apart. The damage had been done.
"Was he angry at you for what you did?"
Sarah shrugs. "It was a silent kind of angry. You know how he is. We avoided each other for weeks until it became impossible. And by then.. you were gone."
You take a moment to reflect on your memories of Joel. "How is he?"
She smiles, as if she knew or even hoped you'd ask about him. "He's good. He's in Jackson now. Wyoming. Tommy's there with his new wife.."
You shift uncomfortably in your seat. "And, uh.. your stepmom?"
She looks blank for a moment. "You mean Tess? No, they divorced a few years ago. She was nice, it just didn't work out."
You don't know whether to feel sorrow or relief at this fact, but for once you decide to be petty and let the relief take over, hoping he went through a fraction of the pain you endured.
Sarah toys with her salmon roll. "I'm sorry," she says, nodding to herself as if giving herself strength to do it. She looks you in the eye and you catch a glimpse of the girl she used to be. "I'm sorry. For starting everything."
So many times you've imagined what it would be like if you hadn't been found out by anyone else. Would you still have stayed in Austin? Would you and Joel have had more time together?
"It's in the past, right?" You manage a smile, happy that this is out in the open. A part of you feels like a weight is lifted. Things may not have happened the way you wanted, but now you can reconcile the things you can't control anymore.
"This is probably the wrong time to say this," Sarah continues, "but I'd like to invite you and Ellie to my wedding this December, in Jackson. You won't have to worry about airfare or hotels. Theo and I will cover your ticket and.. well, everyone's staying at my dad's. He has a huge house in town, enough for close family. I'd really love it if you would come."
"Justin, you're really fucking me over, do you know that?" you try to speak as quietly as you can into the phone while laying out outfits for the Jackson trip. "Ellie's going to be brokenhearted. You told her you'd have her the entire two weeks."
On the other line Justin sighs, the new, younger Mrs. Williams can be heard in the background. "I promised Svetlana first. We really need this time together," he whispers as well, likely not trying to instigate another argument with his wife.
You have some choice words for Svetlana, but are interrupted when Ellie quietly walks into the room, well aware that the discussion is about her. "I'll call you back."
"Let me guess.." Ellie sits on the edge of the bed. "I'm not going with Dad for Christmas.."
There's no point in lying to her. She's a sharp kid. "I'm sorry you had to hear that, kiddo. He and your stepmother are taking an extended honeymoon in Malta," you tell her gently.
"You mean Slutlana?"
"What? Ellie, that's rude. Don't say that." You pause. "Don't say that to her face, at least."
She's quiet, and at times like this you regret that she's essentially living the life you lived at fourteen, always wondering when Dad would come back, if he even wanted to spend time with his own child.
"So.. I'm going with you?"
You nod. "Thank god your probation is over. It'd be nice if you paid Marlene a visit, or at least called her," I said, speaking of the parole officer assigned to Ellie after a particular incident. "We should send her some Tiff's Treats or something, she deserves a gift after putting up with your delinquent self." You playfully toss a tee shirt at her.
"Can I say bye to Riley?" she asks, hope evident in her eyes.
"No," you're adamant on this one thing, as lax as you were before the trespassing situation.
"Mom, my probation's over. I'm not gonna get in trouble just for talking to her."
"I don't care. I'm not going by the judge's rules, I'm going by mine." You pause. "You'll just have to come with me to Wyoming."
Sarah had gone to the trouble of sending a beautifully embossed wedding invitation, done in traditional cream and gold, with photos of the two of them as children, as teens, and one gorgeously done couples photo. Theo's cute, and Sarah seems happy with him.
"Boring," Ellie says in response to the wedding festivities. "Why would anyone want to get married?"
You decide not to give her a response. At her age you didn't understand the fuss about weddings either.
Forgoing Sarah's offer of paying for your flight, you rent a Chevrolet Suburban for the drive over.
"You do realize we'll be driving for over fourteen hours, right?" Ellie says, helping you put the suitcases and bags in the roomy luggage hold.
"Yep. I checked it out on Google Maps."
"What happens if you get tired?"
"We'll drive during the day and find a rest stop or a motel at night," you shrug.
"You know.. I could take over the drive sometimes," she offers.
"Okay, kiddo. Why not?"
She brightens. "Really?"
"Absolutely fucking not." With a smile you open the passenger door and she hops in, grumbling,
Only so much music can suffice a long ride, and somewhere outside of Reno, Ellie busts out a dog-eared copy of a book Justin had given her as a gag won the spelling bee.
"Oh no, Ellie, for god's sake, not the puns," you whine dramatically.
"Yes, the puns," she grins. "How else am I supposed to spend my time on this boring-ass road trip?"
"Brace yourself. We've only been on the road less than four hours."
She groans, slumping forward in her seat, revived shortly when she decides to recite every single pun in that damn book, and when you give her that Mom look, she simply grins and tells you, "That's what you get for turning down a plane ticket."
Three days later you arrive. Jackson Hole is picturesque, especially in winter, as it it was just made to be the snowy backdrop on a postcard or a highlight on Instagram.
You turn down the main thoroughfare of the town, a light dusting of snow already falling from the heavens as you peer out the window, frowning in concentration as you try to familiarize yourself with the location. Ellie's buzzing in your ear like a mosquito, singing along to something on the radio. You turn the volume down. "Quiet down, I can't see."
She nearly bursts at the seam with withheld laughter. "You want me to quiet down... because you can't see?" she teases.
"Ellie!" you groan. "We're already late for lunch with the family."
Promising yourself you'll settle in a hotel after what you hope will be a painless reunification with Sarah and the rest of the Millers, you find your destination and drive up a perfectly paved driveway. Joel's house, a craftsman-style facade done in red brick and accented with carved gable peaks, looks exactly like a house Joel would own.
Parking close enough on the curved driveway without blocking in any other cars, you take a moment to rest, stretching your neck and shoulders.
"Should've let me drive," Ellie says from her seat as you both start to disembark.
There's a smart remark on your lips but when you turn to her you're distracted by a figure at the side of the house.
Someone's chopping wood, splitting logs with precision, though not necessarily speed. He's wearing just a white tee shirt, jeans, boots. You let your eyes linger on his physique. Who is that? you wonder.
As if he can hear your thoughts or sense your presence, the figure turns and wipes the sweat off his brow.
You know him in an instant.
Joel.
Your heart feels like it's going into arrhythmia.
"Come on, Ellie," you hurry her up the walk and to the front steps.
"The bags--"
"Fuck the bags." You press the doorbell nervously, willing Sarah or anyone to open quickly.
"You made it!" Sarah practically mauls you as she greets you, giving both you and Ellie a hug.
You're swept inside where it's nice and cozy, the air scented with pine and gingerbread. Christmas garlands are strung over every doorway, along the staircase railing, the windows, and the fireplace.
"Was my dad out there? I told him he needs to start getting ready. I don't want him coming to the luncheon all sweaty," Sarah says.
"What? No. I didn't see anything.. anyone," you stutter.
"I'm happy you're here, because we're actually going to have lunch at the Tipsy Bison instead. It's Tommy's bar, you probably passed it on the way up here."
"Oh, uh.." you're distracted by Ellie precariously sloshing a winter themed snow globe, the thought of Joel is still spinning around in your sleep-deprived brain, and Sarah is still talking to you like you don't look completely zoned out and anxious.
To make things worse, Joel comes in, carrying most of yours and Ellie's luggage. His white tee sticks to his sweaty skin, his face pink with exertion and dewy with sweat, his hair dark with more gray now than ever, and on his beard too. His eyes, those dark depths you've lost yourself in so many times, peer into yours, and for a moment you forget to breathe.
"You left the trunk open," he murmurs, as if it's a quiet admonition, a secret he doesn't want to tell.
"Oh.. thank you. You didn't have to do that." Your nervous glance at him gives your blushing away because you see his face redden as well.
"Dad, can you believe she has a kid now?" Sarah says excitedly.
There's a jolt of fear when you realize father and daughter are going to be in the same room, and neither of them knows it.
"Uh, Ellie, this is Joel Miller. He's, uh, Sarah's dad, and I used to babysit Sarah.. a long time ago.." Being put on the spot, you falter your words.
"Put 'er there, Joel," Ellie says, holding out her hand for him to shake, which Joel does, the start of a tiny smirk on his lips.
"We all lived in Austin together, with your Aunt Sofia. I mean, we didn't live together but we were neighbors," you babble, feeling even more blush creep up your neck. "Way before you were born, kiddo."
Meanwhile Sarah's eyes dart from Ellie to Joel to you, and back again, slower each time, as if she's piecing the puzzle together. Her eyes linger on Ellie, her expression unreadable before settling on you. You quickly glance away.
"Let me take that from you," you motion to the luggage Joel's carrying.
"Nah, I got it. I'll show ya to y'all's rooms." He hefts the suitcases and bags like they're nothing and heads upstairs. You have no choice but to follow him, sneaking a little glance at how his great his ass looks in his jeans.
"Nice place you got here, Joel," Ellie remarks, eyes skyward, surveying the landing at the top of the stairs.
"Thank you," he says quietly. "Do you always address your elders by their given names?"
"Ellie," you whisper harshly. "Mind your manners."
"Damn, sorry," she mutters back.
"Sorry, Joel. She's--"
"Hey, why do you get to call him Joel?"
"Because I'm an adult," you say under your breath.
"He's older than you. Like, a lot. Like, Grandpa Bob's age."
"Stop it," you say through clenched teeth as Joel clears his throat.
"I can put y'all next door to each other--"
"I call this one!" Ellie claims the first door on the left, grabbing her bags and leaving Joel to lead you a little further down the hall.
"'M afraid this one is right across the hall from mine," he mumbles, leading you inside the comfortably decorated bedroom to set your things down.
"Thank you," you murmur, heart thrumming in your chest. This is the first time you've been alone with him in fifteen years. "You.. have a really beautiful home here, Joel."
He looks around, eyes darting anywhere but yours. "Thank you, that means a lot. Built it myself-- well, with Tommy's help."
"Really?" It's hard to pretend you're not impressed. "Must've been a lot of hard work."
"Yeah, it was. But she's sturdy." Joel gives a sturdy pat to the wall, and you can't help looking at his hand, the way his thick fingers splay out against the dark green wallpaper. Those are fingers that used to find their way inside you, curving just so in order for you to come quickly while his lips and tongue worked in tandem to--
Ellie's voice comes from the other room. "Wow! You guys have cable? Do you have HBO?"
"No Euphoria!" you shout back, scoffing when she quiets again.
There are too many questions on the tip of your tongue, too many things you want to say but not when you're so nervous that your hands are shaking. Staying quiet is easier. More awkward, but easier.
The room fills with unspoken words and missed chances as the two of you shift uneasily, not knowing where to start, not knowing if you should start.
"Didn't know ya had a daughter," he grumbles. "Not 'til Sarah told me."
"Yeah. Ellie's.. precocious."
A ghost of a smile graces Joel's lips as he looks at you and for a moment in time you feel eighteen again.
"How old is she?" he asks.
"She turned fourteen this past spring." God, please don't let him do the math, please don't let him do the math.
Instead he gives a low whistle, wears a teasing smile. "You look good for bein' the mom of a teenager. You still look beauti-- still look the same," he finishes.
You're thirty nine now and in possession of all the complexities that come with your age. There's more gray in your hair than you care to admit (which Ellie tells you not to dye because it "looks cool"), and there are a few more pounds on your person and a few more lines on your face than you're happy with, but his compliment warms you nonetheless.
"You look.. good.. too." Jesus, how did this man age like fine wine? If anything, the past two decades only served to make him hotter. It's unfair.
He takes a step forward, his face determined, lips pursed like he's still calculating his decision. "I.. I wanted to say--"
This time Sarah comes up, dressed for the cold, putting on her gray gloves. "Dad, get in the shower already," she scolds him. "I'm taking her and Ellie to the Tipsy Bison. We'll see you there."
Joel's eyes set on you. "I don't mind takin' them."
You open your mouth to speak, even though you have no idea how to respond. "Honestly, I'll drive me and my daughter. And we can get a room in town."
"No way, Jose." Sarah loops your arm through hers. "You're staying with us and that's final. So, will you let me drive you, or do you want to wait for my dad?"
Waiting for Joel.. it seems you've spent the majority of your youth waiting for him.
"Can we go with Sarah?" Ellie asks, solving the problem for you.
In truth you would have liked a moment to rest, to sleep, to puzzle over the strangeness of the day so far. You're almost a thousand miles from the home you've made after your divorce, under the same roof as the man who changed your life in ways good and bad, harboring a secret from him and his family. Not to mention Ellie's ignorance of her origins.
Sarah herds you and Ellie into the Tipsy Bison, a spacious bar establishment on Main Street, part of the scenery you must have driven by without noticing upon driving into town. Inside is the typical decor you'd expect: neon lights advertising every brand of beer and alcohol you can imagine, taxidermy mounts of bears, bucks, and elk. Pool tables are at the far left, dartboards to the right, a couple of foosball tables as well. There's a stage beyond the pool tables, ready for a band or DJ, a makeshift dance floor in front of it, and colored lights remain still overhead, their brightness dulled and stilled by the daytime.
There's a homey, cozy feeling as you glance around. The bar spreads along the far side beyond a range of tables and booths, boasting a wide variety of booze. Working behind the bar is a face you haven't seen in awhile: Tommy.
He comes out to greet you, his smile and bright and joyful as you've always known him to be, and part of you feels guilty that the last time you were together you'd been drunk, making out next to his truck, after meeting in a bar just like this one.
"Hey you!" He envelops you in a tight hug, and you start to feel better. Bygones are certainly bygones in his case.
"Tommy, it's good to see you again," you smile, pulling away to get a good look at him. "You've hardly aged. What's with you Millers, are you all vampires or something?" You cast a playful look at Sarah, who's bringing her fiance and her son to meet you.
Tommy shrugs, a playful grin on his lips. "You're more than welcome to join our Legion of the Undead," he jokes.
You're introduced to Theo, Sarah's husband-to-be, who's on the quiet side, a contradiction to Sarah who's chattering away about him, and Finn, who's an exact replica of his dad, eyeing you and Ellie with a shy smile.
Ellie manages to find a friend in him as you and the others get to catching up. You're introduced to Maria, Tommy's wife, the roundness of her baby bump just barely showing. She oversees the caterers as they start setting up for lunch. Tommy and Sarah talk about you like you're a part of the family instead of someone who knew them for a summer and changed things forever, even in some small way.
"Sarah tells me this is your place now," you speak to Tommy, who's behind the bar and pouring you a drink.
"Sure is," he says, sliding the drink across the bar to you. "Don't know anyone who orders a gin and tonic in the middle of winter," he says, teasing you.
"I'm eccentric," you smirk, taking a sip of the crisp, slightly bitter drink.
"Should be you behind this bar, Cherry," he winks.
"Oh god, no one's called me that in forever," you groan, doing a quick check on Ellie to find her attempting to play pool with Finn.
"How's business?" you ask him.
"Good, good," he nods. "Just glad to be settin' down some roots, buildin' somethin' for when the baby comes."
"Congratulations," you smile. "You and Maria seem like a good fit."
"Well.. y'know.. can't fuck around forever," he chuckles, then he spots someone at the entrance.
"Hey, brother!" Tommy raises his hand in greeting and you stay still, wishing you could sink down into the ground or better yet, become invisible completely.
The old-fashioned jukebox ends a Fleetwood Mac song and drifts into "Hungry Heart" by Bruce Springsteen starts, the catchy, melancholic combo of piano, drums, bass, guitar and saxophone wafting throughout the bar. You keep your eyes on your drink, willing for all of this to be just a dream, some intrusive thought you've put incredible detail into, prolonging your grief over lost love.
But there he is, a barstool between you, giving you your space while ready to jump up at a moment's notice if you want him closer. Your casual glance gives you away when you stare too long at him, clad in a green flannel shirt, his gray tee peeking beneath. You could swear it's the same flannel shirt you wore at the cabin, in the days when you were younger and carefree, before bad things happened to separate you.
Joel catches your look, lips twitching into a smile as his hands wrap around a glass of whiskey.
"So, what took you away from Boston?" you ask, putting your lips to your drink so you're not tempted to ask too much. It's an attempt to break the awkward silence.
"Lot of things," he mutters, staring into the amber liquid. "But mostly I followed Tommy out here."
"I was in Boston with him for awhile." Tommy shakes his head. "Hated it. I'll never set foot on the East Coast again if I can help it. I came out here, met Maria, started a family."
"And Sarah was already out here, buildin' a life. Just made sense for us all to be together again."
You look at both of them, glad the conversation isn't just between you and Joel. "The house is amazing. Joel told me you both built it."
The look of pride on their faces is endearing.
"We did, and mine too, across the street from his," Tommy adds.
"What happened to the contracting business?"
"We expanded it," Joel answers, a twinkle in his eye though his expression remains serious. "Made a nice chunk of change. Got branches in Oklahoma, Arkansas, even as far as Georgia."
That would explain the six-bedroom house, the fancy week-long wedding rituals that Sarah has joyfully swept you up in, and the catered lunches. The Millers have become quite financially well-off.
You listen to the brothers talk about some of the adventures they've been on, the good and the bad that has passed and ultimately brought them here, with you, once again.
The lunch spread is impressive: Texas style barbecue of ribs, brisket, and chicken; side dishes of beans, potato salad, grilled corn on the cob, macaroni and cheese, and mouthwatering desserts of pumpkin and pecan pies, cheesecake, banana pudding, and peach cobbler.
You haven't realized how hungry you are until you realize you have to remember to force yourself to eat slower, accidentally spilling a little barbecue sauce on your shirt. Embarrassed, you wipe it away, glancing at Ellie and finding her doing the same thing, just shoveling forkfuls of food in her mouth.
"Easy there," Joel's voice booms from across the table. "No one's gonna take it from ya," he playfully chides.
You were so absorbed in your lunch that you didn't realize he was right across from you. "Ellie," you scold her quietly. "Slow down."
"This is slow for me," she answers.
"Mind your mama," Joel says gruffly, his tone is authoritative.
She looks up at him, in annoyance and surprise. "You don't tell me what to do."
"And you don't talk back like that." Joel's voice gets a little more strict.
"Joel, stop," you intercede, your voice just as terse. The chatter around the table has dimmed but it's obvious everyone has their focus on you three.
"The kid obviously needs some fuckin' manners."
You scoff. "What the fuck is wrong with you?"
His eyes lock with yours, dark and cold. "I see where she gets it from. I guess that's what happens when a dad ain't around to teach some respect."
"Fuck this," Ellie mutters, pushing back from the table and throwing down her napkin, quick to get up and leave.
Your face is flaming red with both anger and embarrassment as your gaze burns through Joel's. "There's something wrong with you. Seriously," you mutter before getting up to go after her.
Joel goes after you. Sarah goes after Joel.
"Ellie!" you call out, watching her walk off in the direction of the house.
"I'll get her," Sarah volunteers, gently touching your arm. And then you hear her speak to Joel under her breath, something like "You're ruining it," before she hurries up to catch Ellie.
It's you and Joel now.
"Babygirl," he starts, his voice low.
"Babygirl?? Fuck you!"
Joel goes pale, obviously not expecting that. "I deserve that. I deserve for you to hate me."
"Hate you? No, you deserve worse than for me to hate you! How dare you yell at Ellie like that? I never once saw you treat Sarah that way."
"She never acted like that," he huffs.
"Do us both a favor and just stay away from us for the rest of the week. I'll see about getting a motel tonight, just.. fucking leave us alone."
He mutters Christ, and reaches for you, pulls you to the side of the building. "I'm sorry, all right?"
"Yeah? Tell her that." You could easily leave. He's not restraining you, but you stay. "Is that all you have to apologize for?"
He looks guilty. "No, of course not. I've been trying to talk to you since you got here--"
"Fifteen goddamn years and I don't hear anything from you? And now you.. what, you expect me to fall into your arms like I'm a stupid fucking teenager again? Go to hell! Nothing is that simple anymore!"
You hadn't meant for all your rage to come spilling out, it was just supposed to be about Ellie, but now that you're face to face with him, you can't help wanting to rage at him. Joel backs away from you, his eyes on the ground, hands on his hips, jaw set.
"Longer than that, actually," you softly correct yourself. "San Antonio.. you fucking left me. On my birthday."
He steps forward, not ready to back down. "I went to jail for you. On my birthday."
"I didn't ask you to do that! I didn't ask for anything but for you to love me! And you stopped!"
"No, I didn't," he whispers, arms hanging at his side even though they itch to reach out for you, hold you, make it better again.
"Don't say that," you warn him, backing away. "Don't insult my intelligence, Joel. You don't know what I went through after you left me. My heart was broken for years!"
"You were just a kid. I.. I thought I was doin' right by lettin' you go."
"I wasn't better because of you breaking up with me. I got worse! So much worse!" You don't dwell a lot on the past, specifically the college years that are now mostly a blur of hookups and hangovers, but now it all comes rushing back. Joel was your safety net and he took all that away from you once you started to freefall.
"Bullshit. You got married," he says bitterly.
"I did that so I could feel normal again. I tried to save myself. But it didn't matter in the end because he didn't love me either. Though I have to say, my divorce hurt a hell of a lot less than your abandonment."
Joel starts to look his age. The lines in his face deepen with worry and regret as he absorbs your words, mulling over everything that has happened. "I'm sorry--"
"Besides, you got married too! So please don't play like you're such a saint. You hardly look the part." Your anger has warmed you, given some spice to your blood so that you don't even feel the cold anymore. You roll your sleeves to your elbows, fists curled, adrenaline pumping as you finally tell him everything that's been locked away inside your heart.
"I don't accept your apology," you grunt, adding, "And don't ever yell at our daughter like that ever again!" You storm off, wishing you'd brought your jacket but it would mean having to walk past Joel, back into the restaurant and out again, and you're already walking away. It seems one of you is always walking away from the other.
It's snowing again when you find Sarah and Ellie, further down in front of a storefront, steaming cups of hot chocolate in their hands. Both are smiling, chatting, seemingly getting along. You know you should reprimand Ellie, tell her to apologize to Joel, but how can you be a hypocrite that way when you won't even talk to him yourself? All you can think about is leaving, going straight to the motel and picking up your things at Joel's later.
Sarah talks you into staying, warning of bad weather coming in soon. She apologizes for Joel, and you apologize for airing your grievances so publicly.
"Just don't do it at the rehearsal dinner tomorrow," she smirks. "Then I'll have to leave your ass out in the snow."
That evening you and Ellie keep to your rooms. You use your phone for distraction when your attention span keeps drifting from your novel, but even technology isn't the answer. There's only so much Merge Mansion you can play, and not even True Detective can hold your attention for long. You decide to rewatch Narcos (for the plot, you tell yourself) when Ellie knocks on your door.
"What's up, kiddo?" You press pause and scoot over on the bed, offering her to get comfy next to you.
"Have you seen the news?"
You're on Do Not Disturb and haven't gotten any of your usual notifications.
"There's a blizzard coming tonight. Sarah says sometimes the main roads get snowed in and we won't be able to get out."
Oh Sarah Miller, the purveyor of bad news. "She told me something like that. How long do they expect conditions to last?" You're already checking your phone.
"Could be days, maybe even up to a week," Ellie shrugs.
"Great," you mutter. "So we're stuck here even after the wedding?" It's the day after tomorrow.
"Please don't make us go to the motel. Sarah's really cool and really nice. And I even like Theo and Finn.. even Joel isn't so bad so long as he stops talking to me like a dad."
That night, as the blizzard blows in, turning everything outside completely white, Joel tosses in his sleep in his room across the hall from yours. It's not the howling winds keeping him awake; he's lived here long enough to get used to such natural disasters.
There's something you said to him, earlier outside the bar. It was an explosive moment, with words exchanged like bullets. But in the midst of it all he took away that one sentence: don't ever yell at our daughter like that ever again.
Our daughter?

100 fics
Today I posted my 100th fic on Ao3!
My first was Pottery; or Function, Purpose and Heart on Mar 11, 2023. It was a retired Dreamling fic with Destruction (who I call Joe) as the main character.
I moved fairly quickly into my Spy x Family crossover series. Anya is so cute, and throwing her in with Dreamling and the Endless family led to a lot of fun shenanigans! (Generally you don't need to know Spy x Family canon to follow these.)
Next I started on my Sandman x Scooby Doo shenanigans! I really like the Scooby Gang, and there are definitely some mysteries to solve surrounding the Endless! (With awesome art by @sab-draws!)
Gaulcienne caught my eye next. Lucienne, my beloved librarian, and the shape-changing dream-fairy? Oh yes! A Quiet Love with Wings has most of my commissioned art, with pieces by @athymelyreply for Sometimes when You Fall, You Fly, @ibrithir-was-here for Fireflies and a Missing Person, and @designtheendless for The Dragon Rider!
King of Night and Prince of Day, for @nathanwonderwolf's wonderful art, has the second highest kudos of all my fics.
Then I invented an OC who is the preteen personification of the consciousness of humanity, aka Social Media. I thought this was pure crack but people liked it and now it's a series! Dinner and Play was created with @carnelianmeluha's food ideas in mind!
My Dreamling works tend to be short and sweet, often prompted by something on tumblr or discord, and are collected as Dreamling vignettes.
I have recently written (but not yet posted) my first honest to god smut, but early dabbles in the craft were mostly crack, like my Helm Fucking Crack series. I'm unreasonably proud of how cracked it is, and thank everyone who enabled me (notably @sleepsonfutons, @windsweptinred, @tickldpnk8, @zzoomacroom, read their fics!).
My obsession with Fuckboi Dream (mind the tags) is ongoing, and included creating a chapter index with notes so I can find things, a series about Murphy's childhood (somebody please read these, they are so cute), and others, fanart as well!
In The Dragon's Tongue, Lucienne takes on Titania! I commissioned @lostelfwriting to write the bdsm continuation of the scene, and she did a fantastic job!
A Reunion in the Dreaming (picnic recreated here) was the first fic in Walking with the Walkers, my series about Rose, Jed and Unity. It features Rose and Ara (Barbie transformed in Life is but a Dream), Rose and Jed meeting their Endless family members, Jed and Gault having adventures, and Unity throwing family parties in the Dreaming (with art by @ilya-halfelven).
Trials of a Shapeshifter in Love (in which Gault tries to surprise Lucienne with a romantic dinner) was my favourite fic from October 2023 -- Femslash weekend (by @sandmanfemslashfans ) and Monsterfucktober (by @seiya-starsniper and friends) made it a really fun month! I also wrote Chantal and Zelda, Johanna and Death, and zombie Lyta (my most angsty fic, I believe).
Just Get Me Off the Damn Mountain was written for designtheendless' contest and omg, I won! It is my most popular fic, at 185 kudos!
I also wrote an OG story for NaNoWriMo! At 23k, Wander Witch is by far my longest story (the next longest is under 9k).
After a bit of being stuck, I got started again by writing continuations of @gabessquishytum's asks! Thank you to Gabe and to all the anons and contributors who allowed me to post their parts of the story!
Asmi, @weirdly-specific-but-ok, argued that he does not have a fandom, so (with permission) I proved him wrong by writing fanfic where he meets Crowley and the Maggot Fam. I love you, Asmi and the maggots!
Heading on an Adventure, the story of Rose and Orpheus' road trip, led to a series of library adventures for Lucienne (often featuring Meowpheus), starting with The Library Cat and continuing in the Lucienne my Beloved series.
I wanted more Lucienne and Walkers content, so I started a side blog, @lucienne-my-beloved, and am open to prompts there! On ao3, the series is called ficlets for lucienne.
Hob Meets the Doctor June 7, 2389 and The line I will not cross and the line I will (Gaulcienne) are my space fics, and I am unreasonably happy about them!
I'm now writing for @augustwritingchallenge! (They got me over 100 in my wips a week or two ago!) I combined prompts so you'll see a fic every 2-5 days in various series and fandoms, including Good Omens (Aug 30) and Dead Boy Detectives (soon).
And my 100th fic! Why are you whispering? a Jed and Rose fic for the late night call prompts. Woohoo!
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported my fandom journey! I'm the least depressed one in my long covid cohort, due to your support and friendship! I cherish every kudo and comment and bookmark and reblog, and the art and fics you all create as well!

Possible solution to the mystery of the “complicated” canoodling in the leaked Andor Star Wars Celebration ‘23 trailer ?
Back in the summer of 2023, the lucky attendees of the SW Celebration in London were treated to a short sizzle reel of footage from season 2 of Andor, which featured this shot of Cassian and Bix apparently being intimate. Adria Arjona was immediately asked about in an interview, and while being unable to spill anything said that “even that beautiful shot” was “more complicated” than it appeared. Online, there’s since been considerable debate about this comment. There have been suggestions that the shot might be a flashback, a reunion or a goodbye. But the bottom line is that it’s definitely not going to be a simple seduction scene or anything like that. Why not ? Apart from what Adria says, because Tony Gilroy is not going to waste precious storytelling time on that sort of thing. There’s going to be something else going on. Think of how complicated the story behind the Bix - Timm scenes were in S1.
I think I might have the answer, and it’s to do with the clarity of the new still released about a month ago….
Notice that Cassian is wearing a coat and Bix is wearing a tank top. The location is the apartment (in what looks very much like Coruscant) that we’ve now seen a few times in the leaked teasers, and for the first time clearly in a few new official stills including this one of Cass and Bix eating dinner…
The micro trailer also featured this shot of Cassian, blaster in one hand and something unknown in the other, standing in the doorway of this apartment as it slides open. He’s wearing a coat.
This shot is giving me the vibe of somebody who is not in a panic, but who is definitely starting to get a bit concerned. Perhaps he was expecting Bix to open the door, but she didn’t answer.
Why might she not have answered? Perhaps because something is wrong…?! Did someone get to her?? Has someone betrayed their location??? Is this safe house no longer safe???
Or perhaps… she was just asleep. Or in the shower.
So with all these clues, I think this “complicated canoodling” is a moment of relief. She’s ok!! No need to panic. This time. He’s wearing a coat because he’s just come in. (And I’ve joked before about him bringing home some takeout, but the new shot showing them eating even suggests it might be exactly that that he was carrying in his other hand).
I think Tony Gilroy is going to be playing with us for however long Cassian and Bix are together in season 2. For very obvious reasons, it’s not going to last. I have a feeling that Gilroy the Sadist is going to have us share Cassian’s extreme concern that he could lose those last few precious loved ones at any time. So much dramatic power in this series comes from knowing the outcome. We know that there will be a “goodbye [to Bix] coming”, as Diego Luna put it in one interview. Not if, but when and how become the big questions. Just like watching a tragedy in the old sense.
As Cassian unwittingly said to Maarva back in Season 1 , as they part ways: “ I’ll be worried about you all the time.” Her answer, of course: “That’s just love. Nothing you can do about that.”
And as Vel and Cinta are already learning: worry is a constant feature of love at a time of war. The price to pay also when commitment to the cause has to come first. “We take what’s left”. It’s why I think that Bix, just like Cassian, will be fighting to the end and prepared to give up a chance of personal happiness for the greater good.
#The sad ironic timing of Cassian finally becoming the man he always could have been#Ready for the relationship with Bix he could have had for years had he not been so fucked up#will always be heartbreaking for me#she probably has changed so much too and is herself traumatised#trauma bonding#likely to be a heavy feature of their arc I think#but they could actually take her story in a very dark direction as her trauma is not something you can ever truly recover from#so tragic#I also wonder whether Luthen knows or approves of their being together#andor#cassian andor#bix caleen#andor season 2#Andor season 2 spoilers#meta#wild speculation#adria arjona#diego luna#tony gilroy

"Trust I seek and I find in you Every day for us something new Open mind for a different view" - Nothing Else Matters, Metallica
(CANADIAN HEIGHTS, DRAGONVIEW. JANUARY 3, 2023)
"You couldn't have told me about Rhaenyra?" the sentence slips off your tongue immediately after the door slams shut. He takes a deep inhale, further expanding your doubts as he places his coat on the rack. "I don't like her - never did." he grumbled while walking towards the living room - you trail after him.
"I didn't think that you'd meet each other." he reasoned while opening a bottle of beer. "- it's the first time in twenty years that I've seen her work. She got the majority of Dad's trust." he avoided your gaze.
You continued staring at him - waiting until he tells the truth. "You could've told me that she was your sister." you pointed out. A scoff exits his mouth. "Half-sister." he corrected while taking his mug off the counter and storming straight to his office.
(STARLIGHT STEAKHOUSE, DRAGONVIEW. JANUARY 4, 2023)
The dinner came sooner than expected. Soon, you found yourself in the middle of a crowded steakhouse with all the school's faculty. It was pleasant to be in this atmosphere - they all had a familiar aura. One that you'd find in the Mayor's Office or a Family Reunion. They were all cool - nonchalant almost.
"The political climate in Dragonview is relatively calm. I thought all hell would break loose after Viserys died - but Corlys seems to be running this city well." Harwin, Rhaenyra's husband, proclaimed. You were about to ask a question, but a man walks in.
He had an impeccable posture, shoulder's straight - with the same command as a military officer. He was wearing black trousers and a polo shirt that was tucked in neatly. You could hardly make out the Lacoste logo on his chest - if it weren't for the smell of Le Labo Santal 33 that blinded you.
Your eyes trailed from his clothes to his face. Those fucking purple eyes - those eyes that you've been searching for. They looked like a field of Lavender, and all you wanted to do was drown in them. "Is she the new teacher in lucky St. Goretti?" he opened his mouth, his voice was velvety and deep. It made your head spin.
"Yes, the middle faculty's attractive levels are rising." Rhaenyra pats your back and you share a small chuckle. "I'm Daemon, Daemon Targaryen." he says his full name - like it was something that you needed to remember. He looked important, who was he?
"(Your Name)" you responded while shaking his hand. Electric sparks course through your body. Enchanted by a guy that you only met? Unethical. The man sits beside you - tracing his muscles through his tight polo-shirt. He was familiar. You knew him somewhere.
You knew everything about his body language - the way he leaned back when something was hilarious - the way that he took up space because he knew that he was entitled to it. His face looked like coming home. He looked like a thousand sleepless nights cuddled near the fire. But you shouldn't be feeling this way.
It was wrong that time stood still for a man other than Aemond.
"He's my uncle, actually. He owns the land where the school is standing in." Rhaenyra confirmed and your eyebrows merged into each other. "He's your uncle? Is he also Aemond's uncle?" you inquired, seeing an unsettling resemblance between him and your boyfriend. "He's our father's brother." Rhaenyra answered with a smile. "It's a small town, everyone's related." Harwin says.
You felt outcasted one more. Aemond knew everything about you, but you hardly knew anything about his past. When you asked him about it, he'd ignore you and move to 'better' topics. It felt like you were purposefully in the dark about him - like he was hiding something important.
"It's nice to finally meet you. My first meeting with Rhaenyra was quite rocky." you chuckled nervously, everyone in the table was searching for something behind your eyes. Waiting for you to remember? "So she's told," Daemon flashed you a rare smile.
"Of course, he's arrived fashionably late as usual." Rhaenys teased her cousin while cutting through her steak. "Do not get too cocky with me Rhaenys, just because you're the mayor's wife now." Daemon jested and everyone laughed at his joke. "You can't blame him, ever since his ex-wife died and left him that massive public library - he's spent all of his time there." Rhaenyra rolls her eyes, taking a sip of a diet coke.
"It's free and I will use it." he shrugged, turning his knees in your direction. You knew what it meant - he liked you. Was it possible that you weren't the only one with this feeling? "I must admit, I'm a little curious. Where did you meet my brother? What was his job again?" she placed a finger on her lips, attempting to remember her brother's job. Since her father's death, they've all went their opposite ways.
"He streams," you answer and the entire table falls into silence. They weren't luddites, but they were oblivious when it came to modern technology. "It's a work from home type of thing." you expanded and they all nodded. "How did you meet him?" Rhaenyra repeated her question and your face relaxes.
(BERNINA EXPRESS, SWITZERLAND TO ITALY. AUGUST 23, 2018)
Europe was beautiful, really cold, but beautiful.
It was your eighteenth birthday, also the death anniversary of your mother. It's been a decade since she died - life has never been better. "Coffee or hot chocolate?" the attendant inquires and you look at her, "Nothing, thank you." you popped those headphones back on.
So you're leaving, in the morning. On the early train.
It's been ten years since you've last listened to this song - it's humble melody still brought you comfort. You looked towards the vast horizon, soaking in the beautiful scenery of Switzerland. Never in a million years did you expect stepping foot in this country.
Well, I could say everything alright. And I could pretend and say goodbye.
"Miss, you're in my seat." a man leans down, standing beside you.
Your gaze hikes up to his face - he was an ethereal wisp of a man, he had a buzzcut and his hood was partially covering his face. Although, the hood wasn't enough to cover his missing eye. A purple eye?
"What? My seat is 13B." you stared at the ticket in your hands. You reached towards your phone, exiting Spotify and deciding to give him your full attention. "Yes, and you're in 13C." he clenched his jaw. Your cheeks turned crimson red.
"I'm sorry. Here, I'll move." you apologized, moving your body until you were seated beside the window. "It's alright, I'd sit there but I don't like window seats." he settled his backpack on his lap. A frown is etched upon your face, "How? It's the best seat." you voiced out.
An amused chuckle escaped his mouth.
"For you, maybe."
(STARLIGHT STEAKHOUSE, DRAGONVIEW. JANUARY 4, 2023)
"How did you meet him?"
"Europe, it's a romantic place." you smiled fondly at the memory. You always believed that you were lucky to meet him - the perfect strangers. It came straight out of a Disney movie. "Oh, where? Harwin and I met there too!" Rhaenyra cheered, quickly leaning on her husband's shoulder. "The Bernina Express."
Harwin's eyes narrowed - seemingly remembering an experience of his own. "Oh, remember that family trip when we went to in Italy? We took the Bernina Express too, was that where you met?" Harwin asked and Rhaenyra grumbled. "What date was that again?" she inquired and Daemon answered this time; with a shaky breath.
"August 23," he gulped.
It was the day where he remembered. The day that he began looking for you. "Exactly, it was my birthday." you smiled and Rhaenyra couldn't help but laugh. "We could've known each other sooner. Although, me and the others took the first class seats. Aemond insisted on getting the normal ones." she reminisced.
Daemon's teeth burrowed into his lower lip.
Did Aemond plan for this?
"Invisible string theory?" Mysaria inquired, but no one understood her reference. "We're glad to know you now," Daemon nodded - seemingly convincing himself. "Likewise," you smiled.
"(Your Name) can I get your Instagram? I took a really cool photo and I want to post it." Rhaenyra asked while pulling out her phone.
"Yeah sure!"

(RED KEEP MANSIONS, DRAGONVIEW. JANUARY 4, 2023)
"I hope that you don't take the entire thing to heart." Rhaenyra stands outside of her uncle's mansion, half her foot was inside the door - half was still splayed on the concrete. "Everything happens for a reason," he responded with a thin lipped smile.
Rhaenyra becoming his close confidant was a surprise. In his other life, he was older by decades - in this life, there were only four years between them. They could relate to each other now - know each other in ways deeper than shared blood.
She breathes a sigh of relief.
"I'm glad that's all sorted. Just don't think much about it, I'm sure that Aemond doesn't remember. We haven't seen him since that trip 5-years ago, where he met her." Rhaenyra whispered. "Do you think that he remembered there too?" he couldn't help but inquire.
Rhaenyra ponders for a moment, before seeing her son descend from the Grand Staircase. "Don't think about it, uncle." she moved past him. "Jace, it's time to go home." she smiled.
Daemon did think about it.
It was 12:00am. Four hours past his bedtime.
All he could think about was you. The thought of you being engaged to his nephew brought shivers down his spine.
You were his wife for gods sake! The woman that healed his wounds, showed him what true love meant. Aemond did not deserve you.
He closes his eyes, trying to remove the mental image in his head. His nephew's arms around your waist, pressing kisses on your neck. Aemond standing beside you, usurping Daemon's rightful place.
There was an indescribable feeling in his heart. Hopelessness.
He'd exchange all the money in his bank account just to feel you in his arms again, seeking comfort in him like you used to do before. He misses the way that you'd talk to him about healing, and sometimes he'd tell you stories about his past in the battlefield.
Most of all, he misses the way that you'd plan about the future. Naming all the sons and daughters that you wanted to have.
Sons and daughters that he promises to have with you.
Please remember. Was the last thought that went through his head until he fell asleep.
(TIRANO, ITALY. AUGUST, 23 2018.)
Daemon exited the building carefully, excited to finally be back in this beautiful place. The country where Renaissance began. He sees a woman - walking past him and he can't help but feel drawn towards her. She was beautiful, slender and with alluring eyes.
The world stood still for a moment, before he finally got the guts to open his mouth. "Miss, can you take a picture of me?" he requested, pulling out his vintage camera that he bought especially for this trip. "I really have to meet someone," she tried to reason, clearly panicked and staring at the floor.
"Please, just one picture." he pleaded - feeling that familiar pain in his head. Hopefully the dreams wouldn't return tonight. "O-okay," she stuttered, reaching for his camera. He adjusted his suit, leaning on one of the airplane statues that they had in the courtyard. She clicks, taking a picture of him - before running off.
All without staring at his face.
"Thank you," he whispered - holding his camera and feeling electric sparks course through his body. She was the last thing he remembered before falling out of consciousness.

Another Emmy awards down - our second this year, as the collective strikes pushed 2023's Emmys to earlier this year.
No big surprises or watercolor moments. To me the biggest upset was Lamorne Morris of FARGO winning in the Best Supporting Actor for Limited. Even with Robert Downey Jr. (THE SYMPATHIZER) in the mix, I was sure it would go to Jonathan Bailey (FELLOW TRAVELERS; though I was pulling for either him or Tom Goodman-Hill (BABY REINDEER). Larmorne was the dark horse.

For the show itself, I liked that on top of the reunions, they joined genres, bringing together actors from cop shows, medical shows, law shows. Cute. The only bit that didn't work was that bit of in-show promotion for whatever booze that had Taylor Zakhar Perez and Ebon Moss-Bachrach shill. I hope the liquor goes down smoother than the transition from that bit announcing the category. On a very selfish level, I would have wanted Taylor to be a part of the honour of Greg Berlanti - he

Intro and Master List
Bio:
Hi! I'm Abby, I'm a Christian, and I love to write! I write both original works and LoZ fanfiction. You can find the link to my main blog right here if you want to check out any of my original stuff!
I started playing games in the Zelda franchise in 2023, when I picked up Breath of the Wild for the first time! Since then, I've played Skyward Sword, Wind Waker, Tears of the Kingdom, Echoes of Wisdom, and Ocarina of Time. The franchise has quickly become a huge part of my heart and I'm so excited to learn more and connect with other fans of the games.
2024 Masterlist:
Multi-Chaptered Fics:
A Link to the Stars
In Progress
My current WIP! In collaboration with @coffebits
The planet of Hyrule has known peace for decades. Princess Zelda, heir to the throne, has gotten to watch her best friend and general of the Hylian army, Link, explore neighboring planets, lead diplomatic missions, and defend their planet against possible attacks for years.
But when a strange moon appears in the Hylian skies, shining with hostile light, Zelda is the first to volunteer to investigate. Link and his right hand man, Ganondorf, enlist their services alongside her. As the team begins to study the strange moon, they soon discover that it is filled not only with fearsome monsters, but an ancient evil that seems to call to the spirits of each one of them. Will they be able to neutralize the threat to protect Hyrule, or will the presence of the moon unleash a curse that has lain in wait for generations?
Vows of a Hero
Completed
When Link drew the Master Sword, he knew that it would mean the lives of Hyrule rested on his shoulders.
He did not know that it would also mean that the Princess of Hyrule would now be his wife.
To Become an Immortal Dragon
Completed - 28,537 words
When Zelda wakes, she remembers nothing.
Not her friends, not her history, not the castle that once was her home.
Not even the man kneeling before her, calling himself her husband.
In Between
Completed - 90,415 words
This was my very first fic, and the one that got me writing Zelink in the first place! It'll always have a special place in my heart
After the defeat of Calamity Ganon, Link and Zelda set off to unite Hyrule, despite the fact that Link does not have his memories, and Zelda is still recovering from her imprisonment in the castle. Along the way, they wrestle with their relationships with each other, themselves, and the people they want to protect.
This story serves as a loose connection between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, exploring the relationship between Link and Zelda in the wake of disaster.
Lyrics of Love
Completed - 26,200 words
A modern AU where Link is a very successful singer/songwriter/dancer and Zelda is a representative of a music publishing company.
One-Shots:
I'll Hold You Till You Fall Asleep
For Zelink Week 2024 - Fading
After so much time spent apart, Link takes his wife back home.
May I Have this Dance?
For Zelink Week 2024 - Under the Stars
In a secluded garden outside of the royal family’s New Year’s Ball, Zelda asks Link for a dance.
Rainy Days and Ruined Dinners
Link comes home to find that Zelda has indulged an...interesting craving of hers. Link, ever the courageous hero, comes to the rescue.
Light Conversation
Link sits down for a quiet chat with the Light Dragon.
Kissing in the Moonlight
Zelda decides to ambush her royal knight after his patrol and kiss him just a little bit senseless.
Reunion
An interpretation of the ending cutscene of Tears of the Kingdom.
Finally, a Royal Wedding
After their second reunion, Link and Zelda decided enough was enough. They came clean about their secret marriage to all of Hyrule, and all of Hyrule decided that they were robbed of a royal wedding. So they threw one. Plus a coronation, I guess.
What if We Kissed in a Divine Beast?
Zelda is playing a little too rough with Vah Medoh and ends up injuring Link. They might stare into each other’s eyes for a few moments too long.

Was supposed to order the chicken version but we already have many chicken dishes, so I ended up with the Red Rice Vinesse Pork Belly (红糟三层肉). While I like the rice wine flavoured gravy, pork is not tender enough for me. Seems like the meat is cooked separately and later combined with the gravy.
Another pick from sister-in-law, the Deep-Fried Prawns with Salt & Pepper (椒盐虾). The garlicy salt and pepper profile is nice but the prawns are a little small so after frying, there wasn’t much meat to eat and some family members don’t want to get their hands dirty peeling the shells.
The most expensive dish of the night is this Deep-Fried Squirrel Fish with Fruit Sauce (水果松鼠鱼). A whole fish beautifully sliced and deep-fried then drizzled with sweet and tangy sauce made from fruits. You also get canned lychees and freshly diced pineapples for the fruits portion.
Sis likes this Bean Curd Kailan (豆皮芥兰) which is fried bean curd skin with Chinese broccoli or Chinese kale. Ordered this Prawn Paste Chicken (虾酱鸡) for the kiddos. Appearance wise, the mid-wings are unevenly browned but it made up with surprisingly umami flavours and juiciness. Well, looks can be deceiving.
No, this is not braised pork belly but Fragrant Egg Plant (鱼香茄子煲). This claypot brinjal or aubergine is beautiful cooked if a tad salty but perfect with the white rice. There is also a twelve dish, the Salted Fish Fried Rice (咸鱼炒饭) for one of the kid but I did not take photo of.
Here is the Bill for the meal including the rice and refreshments. We ordered ala carte so we picked the dishes we like and it ended up cheaper compared to the expensive set menu the restaurants offered for the actual day (Chinese New Year Eve).

The mood this year, as this header photo demonstrates, was Le Tired. Just physically and emotionally slogging along. Brain stuck on perpetual static. A pull-the-covers-over-my-head sort of year. I read a few books, watched a lot of shows, found new songs to listen to on repeat, and spent way too much time futzing around on Tumblr.
But that's not what this post is about! This is to remind myself that I did accomplish writer-ly things this year, even if it didn't feel like it sometimes. So here's my 2023 Fandom Year in Review:
Drarry
🐈 A Dreadful Invasion (of the Feline Persuasion) rated G | 6K words
Most of the time, it’s easy for Harry to forget that Draco Malfoy is his next-door neighbour—until the night Malfoy seemingly goes round the twist in his back garden. Of course Harry has to investigate. A birthday gift for @caroll-in.
🍷 Under the Table rated T, 4K words
A string of nearly-insufferable dinner parties has made Draco acquainted with Harry Potter’s completely insufferable, social-climbing boyfriend. But tonight it seems like Potter’s finally had enough, and Draco’s more than happy to watch it all play out from across the table.
Microfics: Different | Thalassophile | Role play | Careless | Mama’s Gun | Raven | You Should Probably Leave | Afraid of the Dark | Eerie
WIP progress: I added about 25K to my Drarry retelling of Howl's Moving Castle. The working title is "Skybound" and it will be about 55 to 60K words when complete (by spring 2024, god help me!). Featuring: lots of banter, secret identities, adventures and misadventures in a floating house, a plucky house-elf, and (of course) a fire demon who wants to make a bargain.
9-1-1 fics, HP recs, and 2023 highlights under the cut!
9-1-1/Buddie
🌧️ It pours, man it pours rated T | 11K words
An endless rainstorm. A head-on collision on a dark canyon road. Eddie and Buck find themselves stranded with a woman in labor after they’re cut off from the rest of the 118 by a flash flood. With the fate of their team unknown, can they weather the night ahead—and mend the rift Buck caused by trying to kiss his best friend?
💣 A Few Good Pranks rated T | 4K words
The firefighters of the 118 decide to give Bobby a turn at pranking them after seeing how disappointed he was to be left out. And since two heads are better than one, why not three? Or four? If only they could figure out who's pranking and who isn't, and who the intended victim is. It's all in good fun, though—as long as everyone is too distracted to notice that Buck and Eddie keep sneaking off alone.
❤️🩹Let It Be Me rated T | 1.8K words
After another Buckley Family reunion-turned-disaster, Buck makes a decision about his parents. Of course the 118 has his back. Or, Bobby employs some LAFD equipment to help Buck out—and tell him something he needs to hear.
Episode codas/fix-it ficlets: 1x01 | 1x03 | 2x01 | 2x03 | 6x10 | 6x11 | 6x12 | 6x13 | 6x15
WIP progress: First chapter of a season 3/canon divergence Buddie fic. Featuring: angst with a happy ending, a secret marriage of convenience, and pandemic bed sharing.
HP Rec List
I was inspired by this post to rec twelve favorite fan works from 2023 in twelve days in December. It actually took fourteen days, but I did it!
💖 12 Favorites from 2023 💖
(after posting those twelve, of course I thought of a few more faves that I missed. I'll try to share them soon!)
2023 Highlights
I'm so very grateful for the wonderful, funny, imaginative people here who shared their creative works, the memes that made them laugh, photos of their pets, gif sets of shows I didn't know I needed to watch, and insights into the characters we love. You all got me through the year, honestly.
I had a good time doodling some Halloween treats for Inbox Trick-or-Treating. I hope it will become an annual Tumblr event! Thanks to the folks who rang my doorbell that night and the other blogs who gave out treats.
I truly treasured every kudos, comment, and rec I received this year. I was also very fortunate to receive a few special gifts:
🎙️ EllaMcSmellBella recorded a Podfic of "Spooked in Salem," my Drarry 'Round the World fic.
🎙️ Spades/bumblingbees recorded a Podfic of "Crimson Neon."
📕 @cheriecherishchen wrote a lovely rec for "Vortex" and designed gorgeous book covers for that fic and its sequel, "Riptide."
✏️ @saijordison drew this incredible piece of art for "Riptide."
And finally, if you read all the way to the end of this post, I'm grateful for YOU. 😁
Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year and an excellent 2024!

Warnings: canon type violence.
Word Count: 1.6k (gif not mine)
Summary: Natasha offers choices and chances.

.
SINGAPORE
2014
Clint stares at her as she gets ready, smiling at her putting on make up.
“What?” she asks, “you’ve seen me do this a thousand times.”
“Nat, watching you put make up on in a bra, will always make me stop and stare at you,” he pauses.
“In a non creepy way.”
She smiles and continues to make up her face; the wig cap covering her hair.
“Are you sure, blue is the way to go?”
The wig both brown and blue is styled like Natasha’s hair when she was young.
She bites her lip.
“No. But maybe, if anything gets to her, maybe the past will.”
She stands and bends over, placing the wig on and adjusting it.
When she stands she looks like a different person.
“I never know how you do that,” he says in awe.
She sighs.
He kisses the top of her head, and hugs round her shoulders.
“We can do this another time, it doesn’t have to be now… this feels too dangerous.”
Natasha shakes her head.
“No, it has to be now,” she says, determined.
“Because who knows when we will get a chance again?”
She looks up at him and attempts a smile.
“Plus, I know you’ll be there, right?”
Clint nods, prepares his basic disguise of a hat and sunglasses and leaves her to finish getting ready.
.
Natasha feels eyes on her as soon as she enters the hotel.
They can’t know, not yet. She scans and looks for Yelena.
Seeing nothing, she continues into the bowels of the hotel, checking in and wheeling her suitcase to the elevator.
Natasha is hypervigilant.
Continuously scanning the environment, she focuses on getting to her room and closing the door.
She’d checked in as Melina Vostokoff, hoping to get Yelena’s attention, or at the very least, someone from the Red Room.
Taking a deep breath, she tries to calm her nerves. Waiting for it, for someone to come, felt almost torturous.
Isla was right.
Her words, as scathing as they were, were correct. She’d left.
Not just Yelena but the other widows. She hadn’t known what killing Dreykov would do, and selfishly; she didn’t care.
She just needed him dead.
Sitting on the edge of the bed she flops back.
Clint, perhaps, was also right, that she’d done the best she could in keeping herself safe, but it didn’t negate the fact that she didn’t look for Yelena.
There’s a small part of her that still thinks it’s not her problem, Yelena is not her sister, either were the widows.
They instilled every man (or woman) for themselves in training. Some girls took it seriously but most of them knew they’d only survive together.
Usually it was the widows with friends and guiding hands around them that survived.
Those that didn’t… well. They’re the ones they held funerals for.
She groans. The wig itching.
Natasha knows she needs to get up, set the trap within the trap.
She just knows it’s going to be a long, hard day.
But, she supposes, what’s another one.
.
It takes them to dinner to come for her.
The things they do are so predictable, that Natasha has to suppress a role of her eyes.
It’s amazing how things never change and the playbook they run hasn’t changed in years.
She told Clint they’d wait, scout and take her at night, and he’d scoffed.
Natasha feels them follow.
If the timing is right, and her guesses are correct, it will be Yelena and two others.
If Yelena is on point.. it’s all Natasha us counting on.
Clint can take out the other two.
With Yelena alone, she’s sure she can convince her to come.
Focussing, she moves quickly up the fire exit stairs, ascending them as quickly as she can, she hears the door close behind her, quick footsteps following after her.
She doubles her speed, listening for the door again.
When it doesn’t come, she knows Clint has likely taken out the other two.
Natasha feels the thrill of being chased, adrenaline pumping through her, as she continues up the stairs.
It better be Yelena.
Legs burning, she continues to the roof.
One flight to go, she calls out.
“Think you can get me?”
The footsteps behind her stop.
“Oh big sister,” the words come viciously, “you’re as good as got.”
.
Humidity hits Natasha as soon as she opens the door to the rooftop.
Singapore has a rainy season that brings a thick muggy quality to the world.
She catches her breath, and moves to the corner.
The trap set.
If Clint has the other two drugged, then maybe, this plan has a chance at working.
Yelena rushes the door.
Guns drawn they hold them high and face each other.
Postures identical, they circle each other, waiting for the other to speak.
Taking a step forward, Yelena takes a step back.
“Stop moving,” she growls.
Natasha takes another step.
Neither sure who has the upper hand, Yelena throws her gun.
The randomness of the action confuses Natasha and she’s not ready when Yelena rushes her, yelling and elbowing her in the face.
She rolls with it, circling and elbowing behind her.
It catches Yelena and pushes her back.
Natasha tries to sweep at her feet, then punches out, hitting Yelena as she moves back.
Yelena’s guard is strong, as she takes it, breaking it only for a moment to push then punch Natasha.
The fight gives Natasha enough time to wait to see if there’s any back up coming.
No one comes.
She turns and breaks the handle on the door, and then turns to Yelena.
“Just you and me, little one,” she smiles.
Yelena’s look is feral.
“How dare you,” she starts, and Natasha prepares for the onslaught.
The timing needs to be perfect.
She raises her knife and stabs it forward, hitting Yelena’s thigh.
It embeds in and Natasha thinks she’s done it.
Yelena sees red, wrenching the knife out and throwing it at Natasha.
She dodges it and pushes forward.
One punch blocked, two then.. she lets herself be hit.
Lets Yelena punch her, pummel her and hit her hard.
She feels the hate and anger behind each of the hits she takes.
Natasha growls, and throws her off as she gets messy in her anger.
“I failed you,” she says simply.
Yelena comes at her again, hitting her in the face as Natasha puts up no defence.
“I’m sorry,” she says.
Yelena places her in a hold and Natasha allows herself to be handcuffed to the nearby pole, pushed into a sitting position.
Fists clenched she sighs.
Easy to get out of, if she’s willing to rip skin and dislocate joints.
She doesn’t though.
Steadily she tries to breath through her mouth, her nose broken.
Yelena rounds on her.
“They’re going to come for you, and make you… make you like me,” she growls, “make you suffer every agony, every violation.”
The heat beats down as Yelena paces the rooftop.
“You’re a traitor.”
“You’re a traitor,” she breathes heavily.
Natasha gathers her breath.
“I’m not sorry for the choice I made,” she clarifies.
“I am sorry for not getting you sooner.”
Yelena spits.
“Choices? You had choices, what did we all have?”
Yelena continues to pace, looking to the door.
“When you made your choice, you condemned us all.”
Natasha compartmentalises her words, puts them aside, taking a deep breath.
“The decisions between bad choices is not better—“
“But you had them!” Yelena explodes.
“You had a choice.”
Natasha adjusts her position and sits on the ground.
“Not a good one,” she says, resigned. “A choice between dying and surviving.”
The next words are said with venom.
“What would you have done?”
She doesn’t mean for it to come out that way, but frustration and the need for this to go right, puts her on edge.
Yelena squats in front of her.
“I wouldn’t have left you there to die,” she says, as equally as venomously.
Natasha shrugs and looks away, “you would have.”
“Just like you’re going to do now.”
Yelena looks at her quizzically.
“You have a choice,” Natasha tells her, “to stay or go.”
“What do you—“
“The tracker in your thigh, the one they place so they always know,” she gestures to the stab wound.
“The knife, it’s disabled it. The current you felt, they can’t track you now.”
There’s horror in Yelena’s face as she feels her thigh, her hand coming away bloody.
Disbelief crosses her face.
“They’d have come by now, right? The other two to check?”
Natasha sees how much room she has in the cuffs. This was the plan, but she’s willing to try different ways that don’t involve her being vulnerable and being held captive.
“But they haven’t.”
She wriggles one hand.
“Now,” she pauses. “You have a choice.”
.
Clint finds Natasha handcuffed to a pole on the roof.
Alive.
“What happened?!” he asks, rushing towards her.
She doesn’t look too worse for wear, bruises on her face, broken nose and wig slightly askew; but alive nonetheless.
“She, uhhh, I stabbed her, she handcuffed me to a pole, we argued, and I gave her a choice.”
Natasha words come out in a huff as he releases the handcuffs.
“Where’s she go?” he asks, and they look out on the city.
“Did she go back?”
Natasha doesn’t answer.
“I don’t know,” she replies.

Okay but my boy Gaz😩😩😩😩 I’m seriously going into 2023 manifesting that man. Can the ppl (me) get husband Gaz headcanons and how he’d treat his spouse? (I get the vibe he’d be all for princess treatment) Can there also be dad Gaz? <3
Im going to use this post for husband!gaz and ill make a seperate post for dad!gaz :))
sfw & nsfw below, afab reader
kyle is the definition of a devoted partner. the dream man!!!
like i said in his headcannons, his love language is quality time. he loves spending any time he can with his partner, and especially loves going on little getaways to new cities and destinations and spoiling them
he is more casual about dates. he will do the whole dress up and fancy restaurant thing but he much prefers eating fast food in his car and driving somewhere with a view listening to your playlists
OH MAN this boy will make u little dedicated playlists every once in a while and its so sweet :) titled like “my sunshine” “listen to this when you miss me” and its just songs that you guys discovered together on your drives
very thoughtful about gift giving! will remember if you prefer silver or gold jewelry, remembers your favorite foreign candies, etc
loves all the pet names. hardly calls you by your name its always love, darling, princess, baby
constantly taking photos of you ! keeps polaroids in his phone case, wallet, and on his walls
especially nsfw ones :))) particularly his cum on you. on your boobs, dripping out of you, on your ass
multiple rounds kinda dude. he sees his cum in/on you, hes hard again sorry
god he is all about body worship in this bedroom
praises you the entire time and a big fan of eye contact
he calls you all the time and most of the time it’s very innocent and asks oh about your day and gossips about price to you
but he is such a perv… sometimes your voice just turns him on and he will start touching himself while you are just talking about something you did that day
his breath will hitch and you just know
fucking cums in his pants if you jokingly shame him about it. like “i’m just telling you about my day and you have to stroke your dick? i know you aren’t that much of a perv, kyle,” and he GROANS
gaz can be subby sometimes, as a treat
how could you not indulge him in phone sex
if he does the grocery shopping by himself for some reason, expect to have so many snacks but no ingredients for any actual meals
and he is so bad at making lists he just goes to the store and raw dogs it
so now its a rule that you have to be present for grocery shopping- he is not to be trusted
he loves hosting at your guys’ house!!! especially wants to be the house to host christmas dinners
plays bartender all night and LOVES it
gifts from gaz are always very sentimental but unexpected. like getting you a bracelet that has his vows engraved in tiny tiny writing
he cries at meaningful moments, like at your wedding, during a reunion where he’s been gone for a while. he just gets choked up
in tune with his emotions and talks about how he feels very openly ( at least with you ) if he is worried about something he will always ask for your perspective and it helps him process things
because he can have a fiery temper sometimes so he really wants to work on seeing things from your point of view. never would gets physical or anything, but he can say some mean things or shut you out
when you notice him making progress in this you always praise him and let him know you recognize his efforts and suddenly he is all mushy
the guys know almost everything about you, even if you have never met them. he talks about you all the time
“what movie are we watching? oh yeah my partner loves that movie.” and “my partner makes the best fucking cookies in the world”
one time you got up in the morning before him and made a little breakfast for you both and when he woke up and saw that he teared up and said “im fond of you, you know?” and it was just so cute that now you both say that to each other for little things
he enjoys taking walks with you, particularly with to-go coffees in hand
people watches with you and you guys make up conversations that you think strangers are having
its his favorite pass-time honestly
back to sexy time
he really likes your neck, spends a lot of time there during foreplay. you have to be really diligent if you don’t want him to leave any marks there
loves being on the bottom when he is dominant. just sitting back and telling you what to do and how to do it and seeing you get tired/cock drunk is his favorite
steals a few of your panties to take with him when hes gone. hes a lowkey perv im telling yall
he asked you to marry him one night after like 4 rounds of fucking, he just could not hold it in anymore
promises to make it up to you with a romantic date later but tbh you didn’t mind
