Into Thra | The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, BFI Exhibition - Deet
Finally entering the world of Thra, which was a fairly accurate recreation of areas in The Dark Crystal, the first attraction was seeing this character called Deet, a Gelfling which are these humanoid cross elf like creatures who our the main protagonist in the series, at the time of taking this photo I had no idea who this characters was, but at the exhibition there was a screen showing a scene with her from the series, my first of her was that she was going to be a shy and cute character. Deet was surrounded by a dense yet varied forest environment that looked pretty cool, which could of been taken from the series’ set, and Deet herself was lit with just the right amount of lighting to make sure that she stood out, but all look like she’s a part of the world/environment, its really nice to she her whole body in a different context, being our world, once again this scene gives me a greater appreciating of the detail in her character design, plus I like how there is a Fizzgig next to her.

UC 49.26 - Wolfson, Ox vs Corpus Christi, Cam
Tumblr media
Those of you who read last weeks blog (if you didn’t then do check it out, if only to be baffled by it) will no doubt be delighted to hear that I am returning to a format that features more than one sentence this week. I’ll even start with a regular old intro - Wolfson trounced reigning champions Edinburgh by more than a hundred points in their second round match, helped in no small part by the ten (10!) Starters offered up by their captain Claire Jones. Corpus skipper Ian Wang got a mere six, but his team nonetheless spanked Magdalen by almost two hundred, and his teammate Gunasekera also got five, so if you combined them into one super-being they’d have outscored Jones.
The Cambridge quartet had also beaten Merton, Oxford in their first round match, so entered this quarter final on the hunt for a hat-trick of scalps from the Other Place (I just had a wee google to see if there were any playful nicknames relating to the Oxbridge rivalry and this is all I could come up with. I can’t decide if its simply bland or vaguely ominous. If you know of any other such names then please let me know in the comments).
Tumblr media
Jones comes in super early on the opening Starter, but gets unlucky in her assumption that the list of clues to names Paxman is giving all refer to the same name, which is often the case with UC questions. Instead she gives one of six different names, those of the cast of Friends, leaving Wang to sweep up, though it looked for a moment like Corpus were going to miss it, despite Jones having inadvertently given them a clue with her incorrect ‘Monica’.
Wang nods excitedly when he hears that the bonuses are going to be on the writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and backs up his confidence with the full set, something he had failed to do when displaying similar enthusiasm for a question topic in the prvious round. Stewart takes the following Starter for Corpus and is then nominated by his captain on the first bonus, with Paxman allowing his answer to stand even though he had initially said it wrongly. I wonder what would have happened were this match to have come down to a tight margin.
Jones guesses Edward I for the next Starter, but is wrong, and Russell makes the classic UC mistake of jumping a regnal number when following an opponents incorrect buzz, so he is wrong with Edward III too. Walker gets Wolfson back above ground on at the next attempt, and a nonchalant buzz of ‘Stalin’ from Jones brings them properly into the game. Corpus get the picture starter, but Wolfson hit back straight away, and the game remains close.
Wang buzzes early on the next starter, but looks to have handed the initiative to Wolfson, conceding that his answer of ‘Danaë’ is wrong almost before he’s finished saying it. Paxman then does that Paxman thing where he asks Wang to confirm whether he’s giving an answer, which he usually does just to pull out the classic zinger ‘No, you are right... *pause for comedic effect* ... you were wrong’. On this occasion however, and despite his protests to the contrary, Wang is actually right (and not right about being wrong). Ten points to Corpus.
Another ten went to Russell, for Harry Truman, and then to Stewart for Bulgaria, though Paxman then freaked him out a bit by asking for another country as well (the question having asked for one of two), not that it mattered, as he also knew that Greece fit the criteria.
Corpus never let Wolfson too close, but Wolfson never let Corpus get out of reach, and this toing and froing continued until Corpus took forty points in a row with only a few minutes left to go fifty clear. The fact that Stewart had made his first blunder of the night, asserting first that ‘brushstroke-wise’ he thought a picture bonus was a painting by Reubens, then that it was either by Reubens, Titian (not spelled Tischen, as I had long believed) or Veronese, only for it to be Tintoretto, would not matter. Wolfson would need a pair of full sets to level it.
Jones gave it a go, having somehow heard of, much less known that he was the right answer, Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, who was Prime Minister after one of Gladstone’s terms. They could only manage one bonus however, and Walker’s neg on the next question confirmed the result.
Final Score: Wolfson, Ox 140 - 180 Corpus Christi, Cam
A good match between two well matched, solid teams. Wolfson will still think they have a great chance of making it through, and Corpus will probably see themselves as favourites to do so. Wikipedia hasn’t updated so I’m not sure who’s playing tonight, but I’ll find out soon enough.

Into Thra | The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, BFI Exhibition - Brea
Still moving through the world of Thra, I was able to see the character Brea in full display, who is another Gelfling and main protagonist in the series, just comparatively, her and Deet share a lot of similarities, yet have their slight differences in design, for example their eyes, ears and nose, such great level of detail. I’m not sure why I chose to frame and photograph Brea like this, maybe its something about the stance or look on her face that made me think she was a snobby character thinking that though she was superior to everyone else, that wasn’t really the case in the series but the way this shot turned out makes her feel like such an important character, the spot light is bright on her and I’m looking up at her, which gives the scene a bolder look, this photo pretty much puts Brea on pedestal, to which I think this photo is quiet a fitting frame for her character.

Illinois shut down his group home network over risk to residents. Now he’s been convicted of health care fraud for unneeded medical tests.
By Christy Gutowski - Contact Reporter Chicago Tribune
The head of a shuttered Chicago-area network of group homes for adults with disabilities has been convicted of accepting kickbacks in a scheme to steer biological samples to a St. Louis laboratory for publicly funded testing.
A federal jury found Reuben F. Goodwin Sr., 53, guilty of 11 counts of health care fraud and a conspiracy-related charge earlier this month in Missouri. A sentencing hearing is set for July 12.
The state-funded group homes run by Goodwin were among those spotlighted in a November 2016 Tribune investigation that detailed deaths, injuries and mistreatment inside various facilities and day programs across Illinois. The Illinois Department of Human Services revoked Goodwin’s license to operate his facilities after state inspectors visited the properties and determined that all 45 residents faced an “imminent risk” of harm.
In a federal indictment the following year, prosecutors said Goodwin and an employee, Phillip L. Jones, were part of a kickback plot with the St. Louis medical lab to split profits from Medicareand Medicaid reimbursements for medically unauthorized tests. Goodwin and Jones acted as marketers for the owners of the lab, collecting blood, saliva and urine specimens in 2014 and 2015 from large public fairs and churches in Indiana and Illinois, according to the indictment.
Authorities said the men also targeted residents with “severe” mental health issues who lived in a Goodwin facility and could not travel to a doctor’s office on their own. Many of the tests performed by the lab were never approved by a doctor, despite documentation submitted by the defendants indicating that a treating physician had ordered the tests.
“We have no reason to believe that those patients understood the nature of the testing that was being ordered or performed,” the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Missouri said in a statement to the Tribune.
Jones, 58, of Markham, was convicted at trial with Goodwin of similar fraud and conspiracy charges and awaits sentencing as well. He declined to comment Monday.
Attempts to reach Goodwin, of Richton Park, were unsuccessful. His attorney in the federal case, citing the upcoming sentencing hearing, declined to comment.
After the Tribune questioned state officials in late 2016 about serious problems at state-funded homes run by Goodwin’s Disability Services of Illinois, officials cited the nonprofit business for “willfully violating the rights of individuals with disabilities” and repeated failures to correct problems. His network previously was known as Southwest Disabilities Services & Supports, which is the name used in the federal indictment.
Goodwin’s network included eight homes on Chicago’s South Side and in the south suburbs. He fought in court to keep his license, but state officials confirmed Monday he remains unlicensed and is unable to operate a group home in Illinois. The criminal conviction also makes him ineligible to bill Medicare for a time period to be determined by federal officials.
The Tribune's “Suffering in Secret” investigative series showed how Illinois had steered thousands of the state’s poorest and most vulnerable residents with disabilities into a network of state-funded group homes, then routinely obscured evidence of harm from the public.
Reporters found the public often was unaware of deaths and mistreatment because of secrecy and inaccurate reporting. In response, state officials retracted erroneous reports and made reforms.
In court proceedings as well as earlier Tribune interviews, Goodwin has defended his group homes and staff training.
But his businesses, which operated under various names, had a long history of health and safety violations.
Equip for Equality, Illinois' federally empowered disability-rights watchdog, alleged his operation in the early 2000s had hazardous conditions and financial mismanagement. At the time, it was called These are God’s People Too.
The state then tried three times to cancel contracts with those businesses. Goodwin challenged Equip for Equality's findings and said he fixed problems in his homes. He and his supporters alleged racial discrimination. Officials from then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich's office intervened to keep Goodwin's group home network open.
Southwest Disabilities continued operating state-funded group homes, but problems persisted.
In more recent years, four arms of state government documented serious concerns about conditions faced by people living in Southwest Disabilities homes. Human Services twice barred Goodwin’s group homes from accepting new residents, then lifted those bans after the problems were fixed, records show.
Deborah Kennedy, vice president of Equip for Equality's abuse investigation unit, said the federal case should put an end to the long saga. She and Zena Naiditch, the group’s president, said the state’s oversight of the system and response to violations have improved in recent years, and such problematic providers as Goodwin have become more rare.
“The department jumps in quicker, puts in monitors and pulls together various divisions to try to come up with solutions,” Kennedy said. “(Goodwin) and whatever name he was using was a very, very problematic provider, and problems at that level are not something we’re seeing now throughout the system.”
Federal prosecutors said Goodwin faces a possible penalty of five years in prison for conspiring to solicit and receive illegal kickbacks and conspiring to commit health care fraud, and 10 years for each of the 11 health care fraud counts, as well as a $250,000 fine on each count.
The sentencing guidelines are advisory, though, and the judge may instead grant probation. Goodwin did not have a prior criminal history.
The lab’s managing partner, Anthony B. Camillo, 62, of Collinsville, Ill., pleaded guilty in March 2018 to his role in the scheme and is awaiting sentencing.
It is unclear how much Goodwin profited, but the federal indictment included a June 2015 email in which Camillo told Goodwin the lab had paid his business “around $105,000” in 2014.
In an August 2014 email, Goodwin told Camillo he and Jones expected about 200 participants at an upcoming fair and added, “If you need us to slow down please let me know because we have rather large fairs in Indiana booked for the next 3 months and (Jones) and I need to be able to manage the expenses,” according to the indictment.

Liverpool 25-man Premier League squad revealed as Jurgen Klopp makes final decision | Football | Sport
Jurgen Klopp hasn’t sprung any surprises with the main nucleus of his squad the same as last season.
The Reds had a quiet transfer window with goalkeeper Adrian the most significant name included.
The dynamic trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are unsurprisingly all in as well as Dejan Lovren after a move away from Anfield failed to materialise.
Any player under the age of 21 does not need to be included and can line up for Liverpool at any point.
Liverpool have been at their rampant best at the start of the new Premier League season.
The Reds have won all four of their matches before the international break.
That has meant wins against Norwich, Southampton, Arsenal and Burnley to leave Klopp’s side top of the table.
Liverpool return to action after the international break against Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday, September 14 (12.30pm).

Into Thra | The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, BFI Exhibition - The Emperor (SkekSo)
This was technically the first thing I saw when entering the BFI Southbank as its pretty hard to miss, I didn’t photograph it the moment I laid eyes on it because my time slot for exhibition was in about five minutes, so after exploring the world of Thra, I come back to film and photograph this character, another Skeksis called The Emperor or SkekSo. As he name implies, he is the ruler over the other Skeksis and quiet a powerful force too, with this scene he is sitting in his massively elaborate and over the top throne, but unfortunately I couldn’t create a good enough photo with the whole throne, did how ever film it. This was hard photo to edit/touch up, It was really tricky to get the balance of colour just right, I wanted it to be purple, but not too purple to the point of being overwhelming, not photographing it correctly at the time was my mistake, but working really hard on it I think I achieved an awesome outcome, there is a good mixture of purple lighting tones and although The Emperor is in a simple position, at this angle his expressions and pose are just a little bit more interesting, with all these elements such as the coloured lighting and textures present on The Emperor coming together so well, I love how this photo turned out to be such a epic and striking shot I’m really proud of.

Into Thra | The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, BFI Exhibition - The Chamberlain (SkekSil)
Before entering the “World of Thra” section of the exhibition, I come across a recognisable character sitting at a large table in a familiar setting, this character is The Chamberlain or SkekSil, he is a creature known as a Skeksis which are these horrible and creepy vulture/bird like characters that are the main villains of The Dark Crystal. The way Chamberlain was set up here was fantastic, he was lit bright enough with a slight purple hue, and although you can’t see the big dinner table, (I filmed it in my video) its decorated with such strange and colourful foods that make this photo overall very vibrate and striking, plus its always great to see the amazing amount detail thats gone into Chamberlain face and clothing up close.
P.S You can actually stand next to Chamberlain in order to take a photo with him, I did, I might upload that photo.

“Manga” Exhibition, The British Museum - Astro Boy
Astro Boy is often regarded as the first iconic character to in Japanese culture to popularize manga and anime, the Osamu Tezuka created character was displayed in the Manga exhibition behind a glass case with information and images regarding the origin of him and the art form. I chose to photograph the statue from behind for a few reasons, photographing the statue facing me is what everyone else with do, plus I wouldn’t be able to capture the surrounding area (where I’m standing is just a black wall) by photographing Astro Boy like this I made him seem more important, that grand orangey lighting adds to the scene, plus the you can see his face in the reflection, from this angle its almost like Astro Boy is looking at people viewing his history or the character looking at its own legacy.

Into Thra | The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, BFI Exhibition - “Pluffm”
It was a really hot day in London as me and a friend headed up to London’s BFI Southbank for the limited but free “Into Thra | The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” exhibition that was taking place over the next free weeks, walking up to where the exhibition begin, one of the first practical  sights on display was this little creature, now it should be stated that at the time I took this photo (and others to follow) ‘Age of Resistance’ hadn’t released on Netflix yet, so I had no idea what this creature was, but I loved the way in which it was displayed here, in this tall glass case, brightly lit like a trophy, you could get real close to it to see the hand craft man ship of him, as well as the radio control that animated him, its a nice insight to see the technology they were using on the series, and as personal like, I like how the wires are just laying there, it tells me that a real person created this to be functional and not necessarily neat.
P.S I’ve since watched the whole series but won’t be spoiling the story in my photos.

Into Thra | The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, BFI Exhibition - A Podling
Approaching the end of the world of Thra section of the exhibition, one of the last photos I took was of this Podling, which are the other race that populates the world of Thra, being more rural compared to Gelfling, I don’t know if this particular character has a name but it was still nice to see this race at the exhibition. Where this Podling was displayed was meant to be in a underground sort of cave like environment, and the exhibition nailed that aesthetic, it looks great, but my favourite aspect about this scene, apart from the Podling of course, is the mixture of coloured lighting, I love how well the strong purple and faint yellow come together to create this strange yet fantastical look, with the Podlings almost surprised expression (as if there seeing a human for the first time) and everything around them, you get that feeling of experiencing or looking into an alien world which is exactly one of the main reasons why people love The Dark Crystal so much.

London Chinese New Year 2019 -  Among The Lanterns
Moving though the thick crowds in Chinatown, it was hard to see ahead or even find space to take a photograph, I wanted to get some kind of shot incorporating more of the lanterns hanging above the street, so I came to one side and upon setting up a shot, noticed this child on an adults shoulders standing out from the crowd, although she towered over everyone, she was using this hight to gaze at the sky and shop decorations/signs. This made for a lovely shot as there was an element of depth of field, and play with perspective, as it looks like she’s almost as tall as the lanterns.

London Chinese New Year 2019 - Parade Dragon
Moving out of Chinatown, I noticed that parts of the moving parade were just stationed to the side of the road, It was a little sad to see these works of art just placed here in the rain, but it gave me a chance to look at them at least. Photographing one whole section would of been tricky as I lack the space to do so, instead I focused on a particularly section of it, being the most colourful dragon I saw, you can really see the craft of the dragon as well as its wear and tear, it was windy so the fur is being blown everywhere, its a simple shot, but quiet dramatic in how bold the dragon looks.
