Farewell to a friend and a lesson in photography
I visited Edinburgh this week. I lived here for nearly 2 years but was so busy with work (In the city, practically any construction work will require archaeological intervention of some sort, so I was kept very busy) that I did not really see much outside of where I lived – Leith. Guard tower in St Cuthberts, built in 1827 I was here this week for a funeral. A friend died on New Years Eve.…

Mortsafes
In its edition of March 31, 1759, the Oxford Journal informed its readers that “yesterday morning, an attempt was made in open day to rob a churchyard in the neighbourhood of London. A wretch … seeing a grave dug, and a coffin already in it, broke it open, and took out the bodies (there happening to be more than one) with which he was making off; but being seen … he was seized and committed to…

Remember that time people were so angry with anatomists for alleged grave robbing that they killed an aristocrat because they misheard “sir John” as “surgeon”

Funeral Friday: Burke & Hare
In the 19th century the act of graverobbing was rampant, and with a monetary gain. Graverobbers, or resurrection men- would dig up bodies and sell them to medical schools. But it was more sought after for fresher bodies, and with the public being more alert to these dark dealings, the restrictionists took matters into their own hands.
William Burke and William Hare are two of the most infamous grave robbers to come out of this time. in Edinburgh, Scotland on November 29, 1827- while Hare was a keeper of a lodging house, an tenant passed away of natural causes. At the time of his passing, he owed Hare £4 as rent payment- to which after talking to Burke, his friend and other tenant, the two came up with an idea for the man to pay his dues from beyond the grave.
Before the funeral, the two would steal the body and weigh down the coffin with wood. Once the body was in their possession the two took it to Edinburgh University’s medical school, and sold it to the professor- Robert Knox for £7 and 10 shillings.
Despite their first victim dying on his own, their next was not as lucky. In 1828 when another tenant became sick, they decided to not wait around for him to pass. Instead they  coaxed him with alcohol and once he was within grasp- the two restrained and suffocated him. This would become their method as it left no marks or sign of the murder. Unfortunately, it’s likely a total of 16 people perished by their hands, all lodgers staying under Hare. When the two bright this body in, Dr. Knox paid them £10.
It’s believed that the medical students, who had no knowledge of the disgusting acts of the duo- recognized a few of the bodies that showed up in their class. One of which was a well known local man by the name of James. Of course, Dr. Knox swiftly denied the identity of the man and quickly prepared the body for direction. At this point, gossip swirled of the two, but nothing was done quite yer.
Their much needed downfall wasn’t until October 31, 1828, when they killed Margaret Docherty. The two would hide her body under a pile of hay until they could take it to the doctor, but their secret would be seen by other lodgers and reported to the police, where her body would be found lying on the dissection room table.
In the aftermath Hare would be granted immunity if he turned on Burke and confessed to everything. This saved him from execution, But Burke was hung on January 28,1829. Dr. Knox was never charged with any crimes, though his public reputation was tarnished.

I visited Edinburgh this week. I lived here for nearly 2 years but was so busy with work (In the city, practically any building work will require archaeological intervention of some sort, so I was kept busy) that I did not really see much outside of where I lived - Leith.
I was here for a funeral. A friend died on New Years Eve. Totally unexpected. Thankfully - mercifully - it would have been quick; a heart attack.
I live in Munich so I don't see friends from back home so often; but the last time I saw Sarah was only a few months back - she came over to see Nick Cave perform here. She was such good fun. An artist; very creative. I bemoaned the fact that I had bought a high-end camera from my old employer. The local authorities routinely change the regulations on how archaeology is recorded and this camera - nice as it was - was just a few pixels under the newly revised requirements: so it was no longer suitable for work. It had cost about a grand 6 months prior; my boss said give me 30 Euros. It would be written off as a business expense.
I explained to Sarah that great though the camera might be, it had too many bells and whistles and I struggled to use it. She was only here for a few days; next time she saw me, we'd have a proper look at it and figure it out.
Suffice to say, that never happened.
Today is Friday. We buried her on Tuesday. No religion, no priest or vicar. Just some Nick Cave lyrics.
I had Monday at leisure in Edinburgh. The weather was good; Storm Eowyn had passed. Clear skies. Warm even. I would walk into town rather than bus it it. I had no clear plan; just walk into town, mooch a bit. Maybe grab a pint... but mainly just mooch. Kill some time before Tuesday.
I found myself passing though St Cuthberts Churchyard, which is at the junction of Lothian Road and Princes Street.
Turns out Sarah did help me figure out the camera.
With my ADHD, I'm able to - have to - compartmentalize. I put things into separate boxes. I maybe come across as unfeeling, but its the way I function.
The tower is now let - I'm not sure if its a unique holiday let or whether its office space - but originally it was constructed because of the "Resurrection Men".
In the 18th and 19th century, as medical science picked up speed, the demand for human bodies to dissect and study was high. However, only the bodies of those executed for serious crimes could be so examined; moral norms and religious concerns dictated so. However, doctors and physicians - particularly those in teaching positions - were not always particularly picky where bodies came from and would pay good money for the body of a recently deceased. A body which would be used in lectures in front of students who had paid good money to study in Edinburgh.
Resurrection Men - Bodysnatchers - would break into cemeteries, disinter the most recently buried - and sell the bodies to the unscrupulous. The tower then, was used by watchmen to guard against this - and they were routinely armed with muskets and the like.
The graveyard has some really great examples of 18th and 19th century tombstones and grave architecture. Whilst not as famous as Greyfriars - where J.K. Rowling took inspiration for her Harry Potter books - it is still worth a look.
I experimented with an Infra-Red filter on the camera. As a kid I was blown away by the photography of Simon Marsden, with book like "Phantoms of the Isles" and "The Haunted Realm"; I think IR can really capture the ethereal, the melancholic. I think that that is my default setting, funeral or no funeral.

This is my favourite panel of the last decade. You don't need any context to appreciate its magnificence, though it gets even better when you do. Al Ewing and Luciano Vecchio are GOATs. From Resurrection of Magneto #2.

Today sure was a day for ruining Magneto's character huh....
First, Resurrection of Magneto depicted him without his tattoo, and then X Men 97 had him say that the Holocaust was about religion and that Jews oppressed him.
I hate it here.
