365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #11: Marathon Man (1976) - dir. John Schlesinger

Continuing to make good on my New Year’s resolution to broaden my knowledge of directors’ filmographies, I chose John Schlesinger, whose other works that I have seen are Billy Liar (1963), Midnight Cowboy (1969) and The Day of the Locust (1975). Marathon Man, based on a novel by William Goldman (who also penned the screenplay), is by far the weakest effort of the four, but it’s worth seeing as a document of New York City circa the mid-70s and as a political thriller typical of the decade.

Dustin Hoffman plays “Babe,” a Columbia University graduate student working on a dissertation about tyranny with a specific focus on Communism. As a child, his novelist father (Allen Joseph, who played Mr. X in Eraserhead) committed suicide after having been ruined by the McCarthy witch hunt, so Babe has decided as an adult to try and restore his father’s reputation. At the same time, Babe is pursuing a romance with a fellow student, Elsa (Marthe Keller), an enigmatic woman who is reluctant to form a serious relationship. Out of nowhere, Babe is greeted by the return of his older brother, Doc (Roy Scheider), whose front as a businessman is soon revealed to have been a ruse. In actuality, Doc has been involved in international espionage - it’s all too confusing for me to decipher since each side looks for a new way to trick the other ad infinitum - and both he and Babe are the targets of an ex-Nazi on a deadly mission.

The antagonist in question, Dr. Christian Szell, is played by Laurence Olivier in an Oscar-nominated performance that made viewers as petrified of dentists as Psycho made them feel about showers. In the film’s most famous scene, Szell tortures Babe in order to find out some pertinent information about Doc, drilling a hole through a healthy tooth without anesthesia. Watching a bald, aging Olivier play such a menacing figure made me a bit nostalgic for the days of Wuthering Heights, Rebecca and Pride and Prejudice, when Olivier was an incredibly beautiful man, but at least Olivier’s turn in Marathon Man isn’t as hammy as his offerings in The Boys from Brazil and Dracula.

Elsewhere in Schlesinger’s film, supporting roles both big and small are portrayed by William Devane, Fritz Weaver, Richard Bright, Marc Lawrence, Tito Goya, Lou Gilbert, Jacques Marin, Lotte Palfi Andor and a young, uncredited Treat Williams. While it is entertaining witnessing such a diverse array of performers, the fact that I couldn’t make head nor tail of the story brought the overall effect down for me. Couple that issue with the unsatisfying conclusion, and Marathon Man ended up being a wash. The most interesting element might have been the abundance of shots in which Dustin Hoffman was shirtless or naked, which I suppose can be attributed to a gay male gaze on the part of director John Schlesinger, but that’s still not enough to elevate the nonsense.
