Research into Crystals 2

I created an Instagram page to look at the prevalence of crystals on social media. 

This is my Instagram page. I want to start taking photos of my crystals and see if I can pass them off as real. Will they be seen as real crystals by the people who buy and sell them.

The crystal tag on Instagram has 12.3 million posts. This highlights how popular the topic is and how is now been sold as part of the millennium ideal. 

A lot of posts have a similar aesthetic about them. They are taking pictures of the crystals outside, to promote this idea that using crystals help you to be closer to nature and spirituality.  

Healing crystals also have 2 million posts. This underlines how crystals have been continuously linked with healing. 

This is one of the Instagram pages I have been looking at and how they market and portray themselves. What is interesting is the mixture of posts about crystals, and images that they have posted from other accounts. This continuous reposting is common among accounts, with large accounts typically stealing content from smaller accounts, or small accounts stealing content from larger creators to get to the same level of followers. 

For example, this post was on Zenfulgoddess but it has been reposted from the Unicorn Manor page, which sells crystal wands and candles embedded with crystals. 

These posts are another example of pages on Instagram, as you have the ‘personal’ account. This is the account dedicated more to the individual who loves crystals and their understanding and love of them. And then under a similar name you have the page which sells the crystals, still under the same brand, aesthetic and username. Often with the pages, there is not this clear distinction and they will sell and trade their crystals from their personal account. It is the mixing of personal, public and branding which interest me. There are influencers now who earn their income through being influencers and advertising goods and products from their social media. It is the rise of the new celebrity, but one who feels like they are your friend.  

I do really like this account because the colours of the crystals appear almost to be fake with their brightness and saturation of the iridescence. To me, they look almost like plastic, or as if they have a film on them that is artificial. I want to play with this style within my own Instagram page and play with the idea of reality and the artificial.
