Leitmotif (Brahic, Beverley Bie) (Poem)
Let's unpack the rental car
we scratched backing into the old stable--
fit for a nag, that door.
Let's make the bed--
here's the wardrobe
lode of sheets Tantine mended
(smells of thyme and naphthalene),
darns palpable
as scabs on kids' skinned knees.
Let's take chairs into the garden
hortus
now conclusus
figs fermenting in the sun--
don't for god's sake track them in.
Let's ponder dust
on emptied bottles,
maman-belle's unfinished canvas,
the antic anti-heroes--Tintín, Lucky Luke
--
let's uncork
this quart of last year's Cave Saint Marc
and wind the clock
that doesn't work,
but first, come, let's make the bed.

Chapter Four: Recruiting for a Jailbreak
AN: Here it is folks! You finally get a taste of what Claudia been up to over the years.
Trigger Warnings: none
Word Count: 1.8k
Taglist: @iloveeverything-09, @eiferundruhe, @greatscott--wrongdecade
Chapter Five: A Summer Place
She was laying on their shared bed with nothing on but one of Charles' shirt, her legs tucked slightly to let the natural curves of them lead up to her thighs and to more scenic places, reading a book. Charles was reading a novel of his own, leaning against the headboard of the bed, but he found it hard to concentrate on the text in front of him when there was a beautiful woman laying opposite of him.
Claudia caught Charles' eyes on her, and broke out into a grin that almost made him reach across the bed and drag her mouth to his, kissing away that smile and make it his own forever.
"Why are you staring at me like that Charles?" Claudia asked, a soft grin pulling at her lips.
"Because you're breathtaking love," he breathed, giving a lopsided smile.
Claudia rolled her eyes, feeling her face flush with heat, "I'm only in one your button ups Charles," she replied, slightly laughing.
"Hmm, and you wear it so well darling," Charles purred, running a finger up and down her ankle.
Snapping her book shut, not caring where she left off, Claudia righted herself and crawled over to Charles where he gathered her in his arms and held her to his body. She burrowed herself into Charles and he nuzzled his nose into her hair, inhaling deeply.
"Sometimes I think to myself of how lucky I am to have met you," Charles murmured, against Claudia's ear. "To be with you," he added, using the back of his finger to caress her cheek.
Claudia lifted her head slightly from his shoulder, "I love you Charles," she breathed, bumping her nose with his.
"And I love you," Charles smiled, his words ghosting over her lips.
Their noses bumping into each other until Charles lowered Claudia back onto the bed, capturing her lips in a fiery kiss.
~~~x~~~
"Hank, I still can't believe you kept Claudia's address a secret for all these years!" Charles fumed, glaring at Hank and then out the backseat window.
"Do you honestly think she would even want to see you after everything you said to her?" Hank asked back, letting out a scoff.
The trees passed by as they drove down a side road in Richmond, Virginia. The car slowly came to a stop as they reached a local park. As all the men piled out of the rental car, they began to observe the serene environment. The trees bent softly with the wind, the wind carrying the laughter of children running around the playground, being princesses and mighty warriors in their own worlds. Erik gazed across the street, seeing only children and their parents, and became confused.
Charles' brows also furrowed, "Are you sure this is the right neighborhood?" he questioned, doing a slow 360 turn as his eyes swept their surroundings. The neighborhood had elegant, Victorian-style homes lined on each side of the street in various colors, manicured lawns and ample yard space. "This seems too...suburban for someone like Claudia," Charles stated.
"Claudia was always one for the city," Erik recalled, staring at a sign informing residents that the neighborhood watch worked round the clock.
"This is the type of place where you would settle down and start a family..." Charles’ voice faded, at his own assessment.
Hank unfolded a piece of wrinkled, almost yellowing paper, "She gave me this address in 1967, I called the number she wrote down, but no one answered. There's no telling if she still lives there or not," he said, smoothing the paper out. "This way," Hank announced, walking down the sidewalk and everyone followed him.
Several times, they had to stop before they collided with humans half their size, smiling kindly as the children took off giggling.
"So you and Claudia split up then," Erik began, just loud enough for only Charles to hear as Peter, Hank, and Logan walked ahead.
"Obviously," Charles bit back, not wanting to talk about it.
Erik shook his head, "Never thought I'd see that happen, she thought the world of you," he started, but was interrupted by shrieks of laughter as they passed a yellow two story home, the sprinklers were on and three children under the age of eight, raced through the water in swimsuits. "Such a shame isn't it, you had a woman like Claudia and you let her go," Erik mentioned casually, letting out a tsk before quickening his pace to catch up with the group.
Erik's statement pierced Charles like a twisting knife through the heart. A frown lined his forehead as he let out a deep breath, he had no idea what he was going to say once he saw her.
"Here we are," Hank notified, stopping in front of a house. "1342 West Main Street," he read, looking down at the piece of paper and glancing up at the front door.
The house was beautiful, a three story updated cream colored Victorian mansion, leading to the garage to the road is a brick driveway. The front of the mansion had a tan painted wooden porch with five sturdy and wide steps. The porch cover had white shingles and a comfortable beige two person porch swing hanging from the ceiling. It was spacious enough for one or more people to stand on the wide front porch with ease to overlook the large front yard with tall oaks that displayed their rich, green foliage and beautiful shrubs carefully trimmed.
"Is your friend rich?" Peter asked, staring in awe at the house.
Erik slid his hands into his pockets, "If she wills it so." He quipped, hinting at her power.
"Sounds strangely ominous," Logan commented, glancing Erik then back at the house.
"There's a car in the driveway, so someone's home," Erik observed, before walking up the porch steps. "Come on, let's go, no need to prolong this any longer than we have to," he stated, climbing the stairs.
Everyone walked up the stairs without hesitation, but Charles remained at the bottom of the porch still looking up at the mansion. His stomach was twisting itself into knots, he couldn't shake the feeling of restless nervousness that's been building up within him since D.C. The thought of walking up the grand staircase leading to the door frightened him, what if she didn't want to see him?
Claudia was never one to forgive easy.
"Did I tell you why Claudia has to be involved?" Charles questioned, trying to find some excuse not to face his ex-fiancée.
"No, you didn't mention," Logan answered. "But you have to do this. You insisted, like I said," he reminded.
"Why? She dies, but so will I someday. We all will," Charles pointed out lamely.
"Her dying should be reason enough Charles," Erik stated, narrowing his eyes at him.
Charles threw his hands up in a gesture of surrender, "You're right, you're right," The telepath conceded, making his way up the steps giving himself a constant pep talk as he went.
Hank raised one of his thin fingers and pressed the doorbell, the ringing of the bell echoed through the house, but no one came to greet them. Hank waited another thirty seconds before he pressed the doorbell a second time, still there wasn't a sign of movement from within the home.
"Maybe she's not home," Hank suggested, cupping his hands to peer through the front door window, but the glass was frosted.
"Or she's ignoring us," Charles reckoned.
"I'm one to never turn down the opportunity to use my powers." Peter offered, getting ready to take off until Erik clasped his hand on his shoulder.
"Not if you value your life," Erik cautioned, letting him go. "Claudia, is the last person to be trifled with," he added.
Logan raised his eyebrow at this, "Who was this woman?" he thought.
Suddenly, Logan's ear perked up at the sound of music playing faintly.
"Do any of you hear that?" Logan asked, craning his neck as he moved away from the front door.
"Hear what?" Charles asked.
"There's music being played," Logan responded, walking down the porch steps. "It's coming from the backyard," he continued, making his way to the gate.
They followed behind the man and as they got closer to the gate the sound of orchestral music could be heard wafting from the backyard. Logan unlatched the back gate, walking across the plush green lawn now being able to fully hear the crooning of Andy Williams singing A Summer Place.
There's a summer place Where it may rain or storm
Moving further into the backyard Logan was stunned by its opulence. There was a stone patio attached to the home designed with veranda arches, an in ground pool was centered in the middle of grand, park-like backyard. The pool was surrounded by tan stone tiles which extended from the deck against the house. To the left side of the deck was a grill and a round white table with a white umbrella and a couple of garden chairs and on the right had an in-ground Jacuzzi. If anyone stood on the deck and looked up they would notice a balcony.
For within that summer place Your arms reach out to me
Logan's gaze halted as he spotted a figure of a woman in a pool chair underneath an umbrella, lounging with one leg outstretched and the other pulled in immersed in her reading. The woman was not far off from the backyard gate, but she didn't move, seemingly unaware that there were guests with her. The record player was playing right next to her, the music must have masked the noise of the gate opening as she kept absently swaying her foot back and forth to the song.
There are no gloomy skies When seen through the eyes
"Well, if that's her, she's certainly living lavishly," Erik observed, simply amazed at the wealth of the homeowner.
Charles' eyes swept around the backyard in shock. He was speechless as a matter of fact. If the woman under the umbrella was Claudia, Charles had to wonder who was the rich man that swept her off her feet and married her. As the men approached the woman they suddenly felt their legs lock up, except for Hank's. Logan, Erik, Charles, and Peter all looked down to see violet wisps surrounding their lower limbs.
"What the hell?" Logan muttered, as Erik and Charles both glanced at each other.
"Now Hank," a familiar female voice called out over the music. "When I invited you to stop by my house whenever you please, that invitation wasn't extended to a stranger, a wanted criminal, a drug abuser, and a..." the woman paused, and loudly sniffed the air twice. "A dog," she finished, never turning to face them.
"I wouldn't have brought them along if this wasn't important," Hank explained, taking a step closer.
"We need your help Claudia,"
From the freeway, you can't tell that San Julián is more than half hotels. They don't advertise with billboards or anything like that. Commuters aren't the kind of passing traffic they serve.
But I am. I pull the rental car into the driveway of the Ambassador, and turn it over to a valet. He takes it away, and it will get back to where it needs to go one way or another, I suppose, but I don't need to worry about it ever again. Care-free convenience, that's what they specialize in here.
Inside, the lobby is all marble and polished brass, just what I wanted. The desk has one of those old-fashoned bells that you ring for attention, but no need for that. A bellboy has already gathered my luggage, and the concierge is ready with my key. A solid brass key, not one of those card pass things. I like that.
I had worried that the staff would be grave and oh-so-soothing, the way people are, or worse yet, grinning and gratingly chipper, as if nothing is wrong, nothing at all. Instead, the concierge is gracious and welcoming without being pushy, efficient without being hurried. Exactly right. I'm sure that if I want to tell him a long story, or get up to my room as quickly as possible, he would happily accommodate me either way.  They get every kind of guest here, and I suppose with a job like that, you'd have to be flexible.
The whole city is like this, I'm told. San Julián knows how to take care of you. Whether you want a cozy little bed-and-breakfast or Las Vegas-style glitz with a casino and shows every night, they've got you covered. I thought at first maybe a family-style resort hotel, with the noise of kids playing in the water park -- but then I'd remember why the kids were there. No, not for me.
So I decided on the Ambassador. It's a grand monstrosity out of the Gilded Age, with crystal chandeliers in the dining room and an oak-paneled billiards room. I want to sit in an overstuffed chair in a library of leather-bound books, drinking a bit of scotch, then maybe play some cards in the garden with a few of the other old folks. That'll do, for me. I'm a bit too tired for excitement these days.
I guess the old solidity of the place comforts me, although I know it shouldn't. These Gilded Age palaces didn't last, any more than anything or anyone else, and long before I was born they had all been torn down or converted to condos or museums or something. This place is a re-creation, not even thirty years old, I think, and who knows if it will still be here in another thirty. If guests' tastes change, they'll tear it down and build what people want. That's what they do here, provide what people want.
And maybe that fact is comforting too. Styles come into fashion and then they pass out again, and that's okay. The thing about San Julián is that they don't pretend about that. Pick whichever place you want, but it's all hotels. You may stay for a weeks or months, but you're a guest and you'll be moving on before long. They know and you know and it's okay.
Check-in is done. Time to go up to my room, and then maybe get some lunch. Check-out is whenever the cancer catches up with me.
Inside Mark Yang and Tara Lee's  elegantly artistic London Townhouse
If the names of Mark Yang  and Tara Lee ring more than just artistic bells for you, there’s a reason. As part of one of the —quite literally— biggest boy bands in the world, Yang has experienced his fair share of touring, traveling and, well, being a pop star. Meanwhile, his ‘fiancée’, —Mark pronounces the word with a massive grin on his face— has quickly become one of the most awarded authors of her generation with stories that are as far out on the cutting edge as they can get. Well known for their work in the art and music industry; from Mark’s impeccably produced songs and raw lyrics to Tara’s best selling books and endearing illustrations, it is little surprise that their London townhouse embodies what one would define as an ode to creativity.
A lot has been said and written about the quirks of the English already. Known for a certain kind of charming eccentricity, it’s a trait that often carries through to their humor, manner of dress –and yes, even their homes. It’s something that comes to mind when looking at the three-story, 680-square-meter Anglo-Italianate townhouse the famed pair calls home. The record-breaking British couple, who met 20 years ago in a kindergarten only a few blocks away from their current residence, moved back to Kensington earlier this year. After losing out on a bid to purchase Mark’s old apartment and after Tara spent few months in a rental home in Oxford, the couple sought to plant firm roots in the city by purchasing this Anglo-Italianate-style house. “I have a bit of philosophy: dream in Paris, have fun in New York, work in Seoul, but live in London. London is home.” says Yang as he slides next to Tara onto the velvet mohair sofa in her personal study room.
After a carefully planned purchase, the couple recently completed the renewal of its first two floors that boast British design influences that seem to fit their heritage and faved aesthetics. Of course, there is the background check Tara did on both the house, built in 1852 by a Chelsea-based merchant; and the surrounding neighborhood (she can easily quote statistics about the college education level, racial diversity, linguistic skills, and single-sex parentage of the demographic). There are also the four months it took for the couple to move into their new home, during which time Tara —an English Language and Literature Oxford graduate—, would regularly invoke Waiting for Godot. And then there are the 3D mockups, sample boards, and interiors presentations that Tara and her team of decorators assembled for her future husband’s sign-off while he was touring across the globe. “Mark is an emotional person;  he’s always had this fantasy about family life and making his living space feel special, so I had to make sure he liked what was being done,” says Tara of her fiancé.
“The day we moved in was very special,” adds Mark. “At the time the guys and I had finished the Asian leg of our world tour, so I felt very fortunate to return and have a new place to call home. Of course, I didn’t get to witness the renovation process in person, so I was pleasantly surprised with the result”.
Working together isn’t always plain sailing, though. “We barely made any advances the first month” Tara recalls. “It took a while to figure out what we wanted to do and the style wed go for”. The final result though, shows a flawlessly combined aesthetic that is very much natural as it is deeply but subtly narrative. The couple’s artistic sensibilities are evident throughout. A darkly dramatic entry plays up the house’s Victorian heritage with a red Louis de Poortere stair runner and an antique Thonet side table. The couple confesses that they themselves picked most of the pieces decorating their home carefully “T and I went on a two-week-long buying trip around Europe and purchased almost everything in this house.” Says Tara’s fiancé with a wide smile. The singer further explains “We started in a couple of auctions in London, then went to the flea markets and the Left Bank in Paris, took the train to Belgium and then traveled to Italy.” Yang says proudly
On the second floor, Tara and Mark privileged a more serene setting. There, the space they call the White Room boasts 16-foot ceilings and is furnished with icy-hued vintage armchairs and curving sofas, offsetting the original antique chandelier and windows overlooking Kensington Gardens. “It’s where T and I will go to sit and chill. It’s very clean and calming” notes Mark, who’s also set up his home studio on the third floor and calls it his personal project on the works.
The third floor also acts as Tara’s studio space where she has built a stunning home office that uses color and print to give a classic, traditional space the perfect pop of wow. From the animal-print rug to the bold green bookcases, this interior is designed to match the fictional world of Tara’s books. The blush and gold tones add a feminine touch to the massive bookcases, making this space the ultimate in sleek and sophisticated design. This might even be amazing enough to make just about anyone want to pull up a chair and join her in her workday. Something, that Beauté+ CEO, Minah Delacroix, a close friend of the couple, agrees on “They are just so innately artistic, their life is almost an artwork“ she says when asked about their home decoration “I would call them both Renaissance people because they pretty much do anything and know so much about everything. Sometimes I would visit and get totally immersed in their world that I could basically spend the whole day there”
For Mark and Tara, the joy of coming home each day has only cemented their decision to make this place their home after their wedding that’s set to take place early next year. “Everyone says when you walk into the house, it kind of wraps its arms around you and it has amazing energy. It’s such a warm, eclectic home. We’re certainly planning to make it our forever home and it’s most likely to evolve with us over the years.”
Grand Bahama's Best Hotels, Resorts and Vacation Rental Properties
New Post has been published on https://medianwire.com/grand-bahamas-best-hotels-resorts-and-vacation-rental-properties/
Grand Bahama's Best Hotels, Resorts and Vacation Rental Properties
Tumblr media
Grand Bahama Island has an interesting mix of accommodations both in the main tourist area and in more secluded parts of the island. Port Lucaya is the main hub, and several beach hotels are available with easy access to the shops and restaurants. However, these are often larger than some of the other hotels on the island, so you’ll have to share it with a few hundred other people. Memories and Grand Lucayan are two of the big names in this area that offer the iconic beachfront experience with on-site restaurants, watersports at your doorstep, and plenty of pool bars.
Or, if you’d prefer something a bit more intimate for your Bahamas vacation, Old Bahama Bay is a luxury beachfront resort on the far-removed West End with easy access to many eco adventures. Divers can check out the Bell Channel Inn, with dive packages bookable through the hotel itself, or for vacation rentals, Dolphin Cove offers a home-like experience away from the crowded hotels but close enough that you won’t miss the action.
The editors at 10best have selected a mix of mega resorts and small properties both on an off the beach to help make choosing a hotel on Grand Bahama Island a little easier.
This vacation-rental style property offers beautiful one, and two-bedroom suites that feel like a home away from home. Kitchen and dining areas are cheerfully decorated, and baths and living areas feature modern amenities and decor. Dolphin Cove is about a mile and a half from Port Lucaya on the water (but not on the beach). However, the soft white sand of Coral Beach is about a 15-minute walk away. The Clubhouse serves up pizza, breakfast items ranging from American classics to Bahamaian favorites, and pastries – prepared with herbs and spices from their own garden. There’s also a marina on site for those who arrive by boat.
Recommended for Grand Bahama Island’s Best Hotels because: This property offers less of a hotel feel, and more of a casual getaway in your own home.
This 485-room, eco-certified, all-inclusive resort is located in the central area of Port Lucaya – right on the beach. Rates include unlimited meals, beverages, green fees at a local golf club, non-motorized water sports, and kids adventure program with a separate teen’s lounge and scheduled activities for little ones. The resort features four restaurants ranging from Italian to Japanese and six bars for dining and relaxing on the beach with gorgeous water views. There’s also a beautiful pool area with lounge chairs to catch some rays. Spacious, well-appointed rooms have Bluetooth audio stations, USB recharge stations, free Wi-Fi, coffee makers, and mini bars (restocked daily).
Recommended for Grand Bahama Island’s Best Hotels because: This beach resort makes it easy to set up shop and unwind with plenty of amenities and all-inclusive pricing.
Set away from the tourism zone on the distant West End, this hotel is geared toward those seeking a secluded getaway. There’s even a private West End airport with a paved runway and a 72-slip marina available. Known for its natural beauty, many eco tourism attractions can be found on this side of the island, as well as snorkeling, bird watching, and dolphin spotting. The all-suite hotel features British colonial charm, with suites ranging from 550 square feet to 1,250 with marble baths, whirlpool soaking tub, kitchenettes, and sitting areas. There’s also a soft sand beach, and a dockside bar and grill.
Recommended for Grand Bahama Island’s Best Hotels because: Perfect for families or a romantic getaway, this luxurious resort makes for a peaceful hideaway.
Flamingo Bay is located on the Bell Channel, 200 yards to the beach, minutes from downtown Freeport, and a five-minute scenic water taxi from the marina to Treasure Bay Casino and Port Lucaya Marketplace. The 64-room hotel has simple, but comfortable rooms with hints of Caribbean decor sprinkled in. Free parking, microwaves and refrigerators, and cooking utensils round out the in-room amenities. As an added bonus, guests have access to all the amenities at sister property, Taino Beach Resort, which include a massive pool, water slide, and swim-up pool bar – so they get two hotels for the price of one.
Recommended for Grand Bahama Island’s Best Hotels because: A convenient location and affordable pricing, plus the added perk of amenities at its sister hotel makes this an attractive choice.
Coral Beach Hotel and Condominiums is a peaceful beachfront property that offers traditional hotel rentals as well as private condominiums that come fully equipped with furniture and kitchens. BHGRE® Expands in Paris, Texas
Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate® LLC (BHGRE®) recently announced that Nathan Bell REALTORS®, based in Paris, Texas, has affiliated with the BHGRE® brand to become Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate The Bell Group. The company serves communities throughout Lamar County, as well as Red River, Delta and Fannin counties. Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate The Bell Group is the 12th Texas firm to affiliate with the brand.
The family-owned brokerage, which celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2021, was founded in 1951 by Nathan Bell III and is currently owned and led by his son, Nathan “Jim” Bell IV. Jim Bell, who began working at the firm in 1971, took ownership in 2018.
“Jim’s deep knowledge of the real estate industry has been a key component of the firm’s enduring success. As he surveyed the local market landscape, he knew that to sustain the legacy of the family business, he needed to ensure that the firm not only survives but thrives in an ever-changing industry,” said Sherry Chris, president and CEO, Better Homes and Gardens® Real Estate, in a statement. “Our brand tools and programs will help his affiliated agents succeed while reinforcing their commitment to providing the best client service experience. Jim’s adaptable nature and long-term commitment to growth have served his company well and we are thrilled to welcome his team to the BHGRE® network.”
Well known for its property management business, Nathan Bell Property Management and Rentals has been spun off as a separate business entity from the brokerage but will continue to provide a referral pool for the firm.
Bell is very active in the Texas REALTORS® state association and the National Association of REALTORS®, where he currently serves as the vice chair of the Federal Taxation Committee.
“As an independent brokerage, we needed to position ourselves in a way that allowed us to compete in a market dominated by franchises. Adopting the latest technological tools and programs will help our agents grow their business, while our affiliation with a leading lifestyle brand will help them stand out,” said Jim Bell in a statement. “The Bell Group Affiliating with Better Homes and Gardens® Real Estate allows us to leverage our 70-year legacy here in our community while gaining national support.” For more information, please visit www.bhgre.com.
ORIGINAL IDEAS FOR A WEDDING
We are going to talk about a classic that is becoming more and more trendy in the world of weddings, themed weddings:
But, if we simply want to change or add some detail to differentiate ourselves and surprise our guests, we can do a variety of unusual things to implement at our wedding:
          Arrive at the ceremony mounted on a motorcycle, in sidecars or on horseback. Although the bride must be careful with her hairstyle and dress.
          It would also be special for you to personalize your vows and take the opportunity to express everything you feel, want, or wish for your life together. Your ceremony will be like a movie, very romantic and emotional.
          At the end of the ceremony, we can change the rice (which in many places they begin to prohibit) for soap bubbles, which do not get dirty, and will give the photographs a touch of "dreamy".
We can also distribute some bell-style bells, so that the guests can ring them.
          For the cocktail, we can hire live voices, such as a jazz group, a choir, a tuna, or a brass band, which will make the wait for your guests very lively.
          As music is always customizable, you can hire a lifelong group that you all know to make the evening more enjoyable and participatory.
AS FOR THE BANQUET, SOME ORIGINAL IDEAS FOR A WEDDING:
The surprises for the bride and groom at the banquet are fully customizable, but the layout of the space plays a decisive factor in surprising everyone.
          You can put a basket with personalized wedding badges so that the guests can play with the accessories and exchange them or put them into practice
          Each table decorated in a different shape or color, or directly a set of symmetry of tables, something that totally dislodges the guests, the idea is to get out of the ordinary. (Surely there are table and chair rental companies that prepare these wedding things)
          Edible centerpieces, strawberries dipped in different chocolates, colored cupcakes, shaped lollipops.
          Scrolls with thank you notes on each plate, if they can be personalized, they will be much more special.
•          Also, on each plate, a crepe ribbon (serpentine) with a note "to use at the bride and groom's dance." Sparklers are also great, but a lot of smoke forms, if it is a closed space and guests, can cough (I tell you from experience).
•          Place helium balloons on the children's chairs or sit the children at the same table, specially decorated and entertained by an entertainer or a clown, surely the parents will thank you
•          A bouncy castle in the garden, for children and the not so young. This is one of the original things to do at a wedding, you are sure to surprise everyone, who will also have a great time
•          A magician, a comedian, or a funny group to liven up the banquet or desserts. Although this idea is used more on birthdays if you hire a very professional person, they will be left with their mouths open, wedding things
•          To create a special atmosphere at the banquet, many focuses on the visual (decoration) and the auditory (music) and hardly anyone remembers smell. However, the influence that smells have on our mood is very powerful. Use incense or other mild air fresheners with your favorite scent to create an unforgettable atmosphere. There are even air fresheners with the scent of famous fragrances that will help you create an exotic atmosphere.
•          Replace the typical champagne fountains with a fountain of something everyone loves - chocolate! It will undoubtedly be one of the busiest places at the banquet for both children and adults. This way you also make sure that nobody gets drunk before their time
•          Place a fingerprint tree for all attendees to participate by marking their fingerprint and at the end of the ceremony you can take a nice souvenir.
•          The projection of a video with old images of you and your guests, with words about your love story and your affection for the guests. This is always emotional and also involves all the people who are in the celebration.
•          Then you can distribute DVDs with this video as a detail for the guests
•          A differentiating element that causes a sensation at weddings are releasing some flying lanterns into the sky. Without a doubt, you will bring an exotic, intimate, and magical touch.
•          A book of signatures, with photographs of you and of the guests, placed in a visible place at the banquet or have someone bring it to the tables, so that the guests leave their best wishes
•          Figures for the funny or personalized wedding cake, which you can then give to that special person. You can also vary with the format of the cake since you have thousands of combinations of wedding cakes
•          Gift to the guests of a tin of fortune cookies, personalized with your photo and with messages of luck inside each cookie
•          You can also write messages with your wishes or thanks
•          Distribution of flat or espadrille-type sneakers for dance time. This is an incredible relief to rest your guests' feet. These that I share is super cheap:
•          If you want to embroider this detail and do it with style, you can place several wooden pallets leaning against the wall near the area of the baskets with the flat shoes and put a sign that says "put the heels here”, more than one
SunWest Park Adventures: Now & Then
When you have lived in a place for practically your whole life, it can be both fascinating and distressing to look around at all the changes that three and a half decades of development can bring to an area like Florida’s Nature Coast. I came to Spring Hill in 1986, when I was eleven. I entered sixth grade at Powell Middle School, back then an almost brand-new school. At that time, Mariner Boulevard terminated just south of Spring Hill Drive and was just a collection of dirt trails through the woods to County Line Road. There were two high schools, Springstead and Hernando, only one Publix, on Pinehurst Drive near Spring Hill Drive and U.S. 19, the Liberty Bell restaurant on Spring Hill Drive near Mariner Boulevard was Hernando County’s only 24-hour restaurant. Barely a weekend passed that didn’t see the fountain at the entrance of Spring Hill filled to overflowing with soap bubbles courtesy of some of the local kids. Things here have changed, as anyone who has grown old (er, middle-aged) in one place can tell you about their communities. Among the many interesting developments here in the Nature Coast region of Florida’s west coast is the transformation of an old lime rock mine in Hudson into a bathing beach and water park.
SunWest Park's History
What was once known to locals as Sun West Mines is now The Beaches at SunWest Park, a seventy-acre water park on Old Dixie Highway in northwestern Pasco County. The Pasco County government acquired the land in a 2006 settlement reached with its original owner, Sun West Acquisition. Plans to develop the abandoned mine into a water park immediately began to take shape, and in 2011, the County leased the park land to a private enterprise, SunWest Park, Inc. The county was to retain ownership of the property, while SunWest Park, Inc. would provide all maintenance and amenities in exchange for all but three percent of its annual revenue. This was to be paid to Pasco County as rent.
Tumblr media
The SunWest Park sign in 2015 with the iconic giant beach chair was located on US19. Image by Diane Bedard. SunWest Park opens in 2015 It took SunWest Park, Inc. a few years to get everything up to speed and the park officially opened in July of 2015. It is true there have been some hiccups in the management of the park. Unable to afford to adequately maintain the park due to shortfalls in projected revenue, SunWest, Inc. signed an amended agreement with Pasco County in August of 2018, returning to the county the responsibility of park maintenance in exchange for all revenue generated through parking fees. Nature, too, takes its annual toll on the park as sands that are unnatural to the perimeter of an abandoned lime rock mine erode when it rains and blow away when the wind picks up, requiring annual maintenance. Despite the few management hiccups and Mother Nature’s relentless churning, what exists today at SunWest Park provides local families with a fun place to spend the day and features a host of water park amenities.
If you are interested in simply lounging in the sands and soaking up the Florida sun, just pay $5.00 to park and set up your beach chairs on the sandy shore of the former mine, now an enclosed lake. If you are interested in simply lounging in the sands and soaking up the Florida sun, just pay $5.00 to park and set up your beach chairs on the sandy shore of the former mine, now an enclosed lake. A Fun Place to enjoy Water Park Amenities such as Kayaking, Paddleboarding, Wakeboarding, & even a Water Obstacle Course It may be, though, that your adventurous spirit requires more stimulation, and that is no problem. The Lift Adventure Park manages the many water amenities available at SunWest Park. Kayaks and paddleboards for those who want to explore the lake beyond the roped-off swimming area. Paddleboarding has been touted as an excellent exercise that uses almost every muscle in the body and improves balance. Kayaking provides good exercise and is a great watersport for beginners. The kayaks and paddleboards at SunWest Park are available to rent for $10.00 for forty-five-minute sessions. SunWest Park is also home to one of the largest inflatable floating obstacle courses in the world! Forty-five-minute sessions on the obstacle course are available for $15.00.
SunWest Park offers a cable driven wakeboarding activity through TheLift Adventure Park. Image by Diane Bedard. In addition to the paddleboarding, kayaks, and obstacle course, the park also offers a cable-stabilized wakeboarding course. With a system of cables designed to pull the rider across the surface of the aqua blue waters, there is no need for the waves one would find at any other beach. The course is designed to accommodate beginners and experienced alike. Two hour, four hour, and all-day sessions are available to purchase along with necessary equipment rental available at the park. Townhouse development may be in the future Pasco County wants to see further development of the property, building residential townhouses on a plot of land adjacent to the water park. Hopefully, park management and Pasco County officials can continue to generate revenue, making the use of the old mines by residents and vacationers feasible.
Tumblr media
Magical memories of Sun West Mine While I cannot speak with certainty about the park’s future, its past, at least as it relates to me, is written in stone. Sometime in late June of 1994, a week or so after my nineteenth birthday, I set my alarm on a Friday night for 4:30 Saturday morning and set out my fishing gear. By 5:30 a.m., I had picked up three of my closest friends, and after stopping at Dunkin’ Donuts, (at that time, Dunkin' Donuts was in the building that now houses Greek City Café on U.S. 19) we headed south toward Hudson, racing the sunrise, and headed along the coast through Aripeka.
Norfleet's General Store is worth a visit to Aripeka any time, as is the old Post Office. Image by Diane Bedard. Along the way, we passed Norfleet’s General Store and the old Post Office building, which is not much bigger than a one room schoolhouse.
The Aripeka post office is tiny. Image by Diane Bedard. We made the turn on to Old Dixie Highway from the Aripeka Road and crept along the lime rock road in the dark, looking for the barely visible turnoff where we could park the car. We parked out of sight from the road, knowing that the cops would run us off if they stumbled upon us. Fishing gear and coffees in hand, we climbed the ten-foot lime rock berm meant to deter trespassers from entering the old mines and laid down our fishing poles and sat and drank coffee and made each other laugh.
Until 2007, a huge walking drag line from SunWest Mine was a landmark on US19. Images from kountrykabincrafts.com. Fishing or Swimming? As the sun rose, we baited our hooks, untangled the cast net none of us ever got good at using, and began our assault on the sheepshead fish which were coming to the edges of the abandoned mine to eat. After an hour or so of fishing, my buddy Jason asked, “Hey man, do you think you could swim across this thing?” I looked out across the old mine to the other side. It was at least 600 yards from the edge where we sat to the opposite side.
Tumblr media
SunWest Mine before its conversion to a Pasco County Park, as it was when we swam across it. Image courtesy of Oceanus_1. I was nineteen. Immortal. “Of course I can. That’s nothing.” “OK then. Let’s do it”, he said. We jumped in and started across. The water was warm and dark blue under the morning sun. I can remember a sense of there being unknown fathoms of water beneath us as we made our way across the mine. I can also remember a feeling of triumph as we climbed out on the other side and began to walk back to where our more sensible friends waited for us. I’m too old now to know where kids today trespass for fun here in the Nature Coast area, but surely somewhere there is a group of friends sneaking into some forbidden garden making memories. Just as surely as they will in thirty or so years look back and remember their adventures fondly. Read the full article
I’m not sure why more people don’t travel to Wales. It’s such a dynamic country. In part 2, I’ll be exploring Caernarfon in a quick 24-hour trip.
I left Llududando on a beautiful sunny morning. After a stop at the Great Orme, I headed south to Caernarfon. Most people have heard of Caernarfon, it’s most popular as the set of the crowning of the Prince of Wales. When you enter Caernarfon you really feel as if you’ve stepped back in time, with its cobblestone streets and looming stronghold of Caernarfon castle, you really feel as if you’re wandering in a fairy tale.
A couple of things to keep in mind when visiting.
On-street parking is scarce so you’ll have to find a parking garage or lot. There are a few to choose from but they can be a bit pricy. I parked overnight in the lot below the castle. It cost £5 for the day but if you were going to be there overnight it doubled to £10, which was pretty expensive. However, it was two blocks from where I was staying and the lot was monitored so I felt good about leaving my rental car there.
The streets are very narrow so be aware when driving in the village. With that said here are my tips for visiting Caernarfon.
Things to do:
#gallery-0-13 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-13 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 25%; } #gallery-0-13 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-13 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Caernarfon Castle – This is the number one attraction in Caernarfon. Built between 1283 and 1285, it is one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites and it was included in my Cadw Explorer’s Pass, so it was a no brainer for a visit. This castle is gorgeous with good exhibitions and plenty of towers to climb. Make sure to wear good footwear. Many of the tower stairs are narrow and plenty and each pinnacle offers a commanding view of the nearby Snowdonia mountain range, the port, and the town of Caernarfon.
Parc Glynllifon – This beautiful park is situated just south of town. For £4 you can wander the grounds and see various sculptures and historic gardens with rare plants. There is also an art gallery and cafe on site.
Places to Eat:
#gallery-0-14 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-14 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-14 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-14 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Bell Tower Cafe on Hole in the Wall
Black Boy Inn
Black Boy Inn – I found this place around the corner from where I was staying. If you’re looking for good food in a cozy atmosphere head to the Black Boy Inn. There are several eating areas including fine dining and outdoor seating. There are several bars set up in small rooms filled with tons of character. None of the chairs match, which I found charming, and there are gorgeous wood beams throughout. The food is good and there is always someone looking to chat. It’s a great place to eat for a solo traveler.
Y Gegin Fach – This is a definite stop for a great breakfast at a really good price. The cafe is small but the staff is friendly and the food is good. It felt like everyone knew everyone there. It’s a really nice experience.
Bell Tower Cafe – This is pretty much just a lunch and tea place. It’s located at 24 Hole in the Wall Street. How could you not visit a street by that name? At the time I was looking for a snack and had my first traditional Welsh Cake with tea. It was beautiful. It’s definitely one of the foods you should have when in Wales. With good service and a cute atmosphere, I highly recommend stopping in for lunch or tea.
Bar Bach – This tiny bar claims to be the smallest bar in Wales. To be honest I’ve been in smaller bars but this is quite tiny. There are a good-sized bar and a couple of tables. They have good food and a decent selection of beers.
Places to Stay:
Black Boy Inn – Not only do they have good food but they have reasonable accommodations as well.
Totters Hostel – I stayed here. If you’re looking for your own space near the castle look no further. They have a double room with a private bath on the top floor of a pretty townhouse, that is the perfect accommodation for just that. There is a full kitchen on the ground floor in case you want to stay in or have breakfast in the morning. This is a great option and it’s only two blocks to the castle.
I really enjoyed my time in Caernarfon. To be honest I wish I had spent more than a day there. I fit in quite a bit and cannot wait until I can return. Do you want to travel to Wales? Send me a message. I can help you book your Welsh dream. Until next time.
#gallery-0-15 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-15 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-15 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-15 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Solo Travel Through Wales Part 2: 24 hours in Caernarfon I'm not sure why more people don't travel to Wales. It's such a dynamic country. In part 2, I'll be exploring Caernarfon in a quick 24-hour trip.
