So I noticed that with the Riddler bingo for this AU's Riddler specifically the "Arkham" space was left empty. So that leaves me wondering: what does the Bat do with all of his baddies after he apprehends them? Because as stated with Joker's backstory Arkham exists, but it seems it's not going to be used, so then where does Batman deposit all of his captured baddies at?
This is actually pretty important to a lot of plot points, so this is going to be kind of long!
Batman wants justice and dangerous things to stop plaguing Gotham, but Arkham isn't really going to help that. It kind of just makes people worse. Joker having been in there would also make Batman reluctant to send others there, because he'd be so distraught about the idea. He's been there for years. He knows the personal hell that that becomes.
There are many more circumstantial factors that lend to not sending the rogues to Arkham as well;

A big one is that Batman isn't actually able to capture a lot of them. For instance, the Riddler and Scarecrow never really get close to being caught. They're too capable and have such methods of evasion. The closest Bats has come to catching one of those two is when he and the Joker started working together. Before Eddie worked with Jo, he operated remotely from a hideout and broadcasted his crimes and riddles. Bats had already been working on finding this hideout, and he had finally located it right before the Joker joined his force. (That's all I'll say about that instance for now) But others like Ivy, Harley, and Polka Dot Man always slip away and are untraceable.
Also another little extra thing: Riddler is able to find a lot of information on bad Gothamites, especially the elite that Bats otherwise can't find anything to present fact about, so if he lets him get away, he can bring more people to him basically.

Bats also lets a decent amount of them get away because they aren't big enough threats. An example of this would be Music Meister. Is he a public nuisance? Yes, but is he really causing any problems? No. In this he's kind of just a silly guy who happens to be metahuman that still wants to use his natural gifts. He's pretty much a theater kid with too much power in his hands.

There is also a section of the rogue gallery whose issues are resolved before being sent to Arkham would be necessary. Clayface, Manbat, and Babydoll are some such rogues. Their roles in this au will boil down to maybe a chapter or so, depending. Their situations mostly require careful handing (and in Manbat's case being cured) to go back to living as best they possibly can. They're able to be reasoned with and get help, if that makes sense? I'm not sure that's the correct wording, but you'll see when we get there.

If the rogues have enough money, power, or influence, they themselves could get out of being sent there. This is how Penguin at least avoids ever being sent there, or charged with anything besides a warning, really.

Batman has also had the unfortunate opportunity of meeting Hugo Strange, the head doctor of Arkham Asylum, as Bruce Wayne. He got to witness firsthand just how demented and intelligent that man is and he'd rather not give Strange more victims to his madhouse.

Landslide Dams the Chilcotin River
Late on July 30, 2024, land along the south bank of the Chilcotin River in Farwell Canyon began to sink and flow into the valley below. When the landslide stopped moving, a large piece of earth had dropped more than 50 meters (160 feet), leaving a mound of debris 1,000 meters long, 600 meters wide, and 30 meters deep that blocked the river and completely halted its flow.
When the OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 captured this image (second from the top) on August 1, 2024, water had begun to pool behind the landslide deposit, creating a long, narrow lake. The first image (top) shows the same area on July 16, about two weeks before the landslide.
Soon after the event was discovered, local authorities issued flood warnings for areas upstream of the landslide and evacuation orders for areas immediately downstream. “The major threat in situations like this is that large amounts of water build up behind the landslide dam and eventually trigger destructive outburst floods,” said Robert Emberson, a member of NASA’s Landslides research team and one of the associate program managers for NASA’s Disasters program.
On August 5, water began to overwhelm the natural dam, causing water levels downstream to increase rapidly and carry woody debris down the river. Preliminary modeling from British Columbia’s River Forecast Center indicated that water levels would surge above typical spring flooding levels on the Chilcotin upstream of the point where it flows into the Fraser River.
On the Fraser, estimated flows are likely to be similar to or below peak flows that occur during typical spring flooding. However, “the water will react differently, with greater momentum and force, than a gradual increase in water levels,” officials from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR) warned.

As a trickle and then a gushing torrent of water chiseled through the landslide debris, authorities urged people to stay away from the riverbanks due to the risk of fast-moving water and debris. A gauge downstream at Big Bar showed Fraser River water levels peaking on August 6 at 3,640 cubic meters per second: a sharp increase, though not a historical record for that date.
“Fortunately, the Chilcotin River is sparsely populated, and evacuation warnings have already been issued,” Emberson said. “But the impact of flooding on agriculture downstream is still a concern.”
The photograph above, provided by EMCR, shows debris-filled water pooling behind the landslide dam on August 1. The image below, also provided by EMCR, shows the leading edge of the floodwater after it broke through the dam and flowed south along the Chilcotin River into the Fraser River on August 5.
The event occurred in a remote part of British Columbia, about 100 kilometers southwest of Williams Lake, in an area known as Nagwentled by the Tšilhqot’in, an Athabaskan-speaking indigenous group in the area. Nagwentled roughly translates to “landslides across the river.” Indeed, scars along the south side of the river and tongue-shaped debris fields visible in multiple areas indicate that landslides occur relatively frequently.
“The scalloped edges in the terrain immediately south of the point of failure appear to be ancient landslide scarps, some of which were likely considerably larger than the event in July,” said Daniel Shugar, a geomorphologist at the University of Calgary.

The river is also an important waterway for several types of salmon. In a statement issued after the landslide, the Tšilhqot‘in National Government expressed particular concern that the event had blocked the movement of Taseko sockeye, an endangered population that had been on track to return to spawning grounds at record low levels prior to the landslide.
“[We are] calling on all levels of government, downstream First Nations, the Pacific Salmon Commission, and other Nations and States, especially Alaskan fisheries, to take all precautionary measures possible to conserve Tšilhqot‘in territory-bound salmon,” the group said.
There are some ranches, farms, and mining operations along the river edges, and people regularly canoe and camp along the Chilcotin. A stretch of the canyon downstream with large sand dunes is a common destination for hikers, campers, and mountain bikers. According to the Canadian Broadcast Company, one person in the area was partially buried by the initial landslide and had to be rescued by a local resident.
Government officials and university scientists will be monitoring the situation in the coming days and weeks from the ground and from the air with helicopters and uncrewed vehicles using a variety of technologies. They will also be using satellites and other forms of remote sensing. “Satellites are indispensable for near-real-time monitoring of evolving disaster situations like this,” Shugar said. “Having eyes in the sky to see the entire slide and impounded lake is tremendously useful.”

2024-08-25: Hex 25 (Shrubland)
Stiff branches groan in protest against the wind; the occasional strong gusts breaking smaller branches off and exposing their sweet sap to the air. Most noticeable, however is the smell of oil from the oil field, and the creosote on the telegraph poles running through the hex.
Notable Feature: Resource (Oil Field)
A large black patch of land in this hex indicates a shallow oil deposit that is flowing up to the surface. Oil barons have already surveyed the site and decided that it wasn't productive enough to warrant the installation of an oil derrick. However, the area still produces a small amount of crude oil on its own each day.
Using a barrel and a coarse filter to remove impurities, the field can fill 1 barrel each day. The barrel collection process does not require supervision, and any excess will merely overflow on the ground. If additional barrels are placed in the field, every barrel beyond the first captures only 1/4 barrel each day. The oil can be sold to certain merchants, but can also be used as a fire accelerant, lubricant, or source of smoke for signaling.
Hidden: Schoolhouse Raid
A rickety one-room schoolhouse for rural children is host to the school's caretaker, a flighty and easily-startled man named Reggie Dupree. The schoolhouse is constructed in a remote area because it was established by the ILF to teach the bits of history that have been banned from the curriculum by Carrowian decree. The Carrowian loyalists discovered the schoolhouse and abducted the schoolteacher, Ms. Jacqueline Hebert. She is being held and interrogated as a dissident in a small military prison two hexes to the south (outside the sandbox). Reggie asks the party to try to rescue Jacqueline so they can move the schoolhouse and keep instructing the children to continue the fight until the swamp is liberated.
Secret: This Line Is Tapped
A traveling telegraph lineman (Hugo Samson) who is in charge of repairing breaks in the remote sections of line is getting tired of all the travel associated with his job. He can be found in any hex with accessible telegraph lines (100% chance for settlements and any hex with a rail line, as well as this hex; 2-in-6 chance otherwise). He's willing to trade jobs with anyone for a few days so he can have a change of pace. Anyone who accepts the trade is given a lineman's kit, which can tap into telegraph lines to verify they are sending and receiving messages.
If someone with a lineman's kit taps the telegraph lines in in this hex (Hex 25), one of the first messages they will intercept is a notice regarding the upcoming repositioning of Regulator troops. They are going to be marching out to Hex 11 and preparing for a major push toward capturing territory on the north side of the river (Hex 10 and above). However, this notice is a trap used by the Gate, hoping that the ILF has sympathetic telegraph operators who will relay that information to people who make strategic decisions within the ILF. The actual troop movements are quiet different, and designed to ambush the ILF who act on the information.
If the party is able to relay this information to a high-level ILF member or inform the Gate that their message was intercepted, the party will be permanently excluded from any discussions regarding military secrets, and any future information (even if true and verifiable) will not be accepted from the party.

He needed to find a suitable place to hide the soldier until he could return later and dispose of him properly. Jason surveyed the area, taking note of any likely candidates for concealment. Finally, he settled on an old, dusty office space nestled among the recesses of the building. Its remote location offered ample privacy and security from prying eyes.
Once the soldier was safely deposited within the confines of the chosen office, Jason set about fortifying its secrecy even further. Using pieces of discarded furniture lying scattered across the floor, he constructed makeshift barriers to block any viewpoints leading into the room.
Satisfied with his efforts, Jason moved closer to the unconscious soldier, feeling an undeniable surge of excitement course through his veins. The anticipation of donning the coveted uniform heightened his arousal tenfold, causing him to tremble slightly with desire.
Drawing nearer still, Jason reached out tentatively, running his fingers lightly along the fabric of the guard's uniform jacket. The feel of the crisp material sent waves of sensual delight coursing through his entire being, amplified by the lingering scents of sweat and masculine musk that permeated the garments. Unable to contain himself any longer, Jason impulsively pulled the jacket open, exposing the soldier's upper torso.
Inhaling deeply, he savored the enticing fragrances of male essence and sweaty skin mixed together – an intoxicating combination that stirred powerful yearnings within him. Gently stroking the soft cotton fabric of the uniform top, Jason couldn't help but admire the design, the subtle embroidered insignia representing authority and prestige. The sight filled him with both respect and longing, prompting Jason to press his face against the soldier's chest, drawing in deep breaths to capture the enchanting scent swirling around him.
With a gentle caress of his cheek against the smooth surface of the uniform collar, Jason relished the heady mixture of adrenaline and pheromones that suffused the atmosphere. As his fingertips traced delicate lines along the soldier's neck, he imagined the satisfying snap of buttons giving way beneath his grasp.
Unbuttoning each row of fastenings methodically, Jason exposed more and more flesh beneath the fabric – the pale, supple skin that had previously remained concealed beneath layers of uniform. Reality returned sharply as he realized he hadn't removed the socks yet. Quickly snapping back into action, Jason knelt beside the soldier, gently pulling apart the laces of his combat boots. Once loosened sufficiently, he slipped off the shoes, setting them aside alongside the boots.
With the soldier's feet finally freed from their confining shells, Jason turned his attention toward the soggy pair of socks resting on the soldier's feet. Despite their poor condition, the soiled, sweaty fabric presented itself as a treasure trove of sensory experiences begging to be explored.
Bending low, Jason pressed his lips against the moist fabric covering one foot, savoring the familiar, pungent scent of sweat intertwined with the faint hint of antiperspirant. The contrast between the cool exterior and warmth radiating from within caused goosebumps to rise on his skin, adding to the overall stimulation.
The taste of the soaked fibers proved equally inviting, evoking memories of past conquests and adventures.

Following suit, he put on the matching pants, making sure they were neither too loose nor too tight, providing both mobility and concealment when necessary. Lastly, he strapped on the utility belt, filled with essential tools and equipment needed for the mission ahead.

NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS Earth planning date: Friday, Oct. 18, 2024 On sol 4338, we have a science block planned as well as some arm activities. Our science activities include a ChemCam observation of “Donkey Lake.” This is a bedrock target with exposed laminations. In geology, lamination is a sequence of small-scale, embedded fine layers of sedimentary rock. Next, we will do an RMI mosaic as well as Mastcam imaging on “Fascination Turret” to document the boulder configuration for study of both debris flow and rock deposition processes. We’ll also do a Navcam dust devil survey to study the Martian atmosphere, before moving into our arm backbones. We’ll perform a DRT and APXS on several bedrock targets with exposed layering. An exciting sol for geology! Sol 4339 presented some interesting decisions for our planning team to make. We started out with a science block. This included a ChemCam LIBS analysis on a soil target with interesting color differences. We also performed an RMI mosaic and Mastcam imaging of “Whitebark Pass” to study possible surface erosion. After this science block, we planned to do a long traverse, which is where planning got a bit tricky.  The drive was a bit complicated to plan. The terrain had lots of rocks which ultimately prevented us from planning a guarded drive (i.e., a drive using auto navigation), which would have extended the drive length. There are occlusion considerations — we always want to end the drive in a good orientation for a communications link. When evaluating our end of drive, there are potential configurations where the line of sight for communications would be blocked, either due to terrain or due to objects on the rover deck. Here, because of the many and large size of rocks in our terrain, we were not confident that auto-navigation would not fault and position us in a bad orientation for our next communications window. With this risk, we decided to take a shorter drive with a sure unoccluded end-of-drive orientation. As planned, our drive will reach about 27 meters (almost 89 feet), whereas a guarded drive if the terrain was better might have yielded around 50 meters (about 164 feet). After the drive, we’ll take some imaging and do a Mastcam survey to observe soils along the traverse path. On sol 4340, we planned for two science blocks. The first included a ChemCam AEGIS activity — this will allow the rover to examine its surroundings and pick out some interesting targets for analysis. We will also perform a Navcam dust devil movie to capture any interesting dust activities in the atmosphere. Next, we’ll move into our second science block, which is focused on environmental science. We’ll first take Mastcam tau observations, which will allow us to study and measure the optical depth of the atmosphere, which is often used as a proxy to understand the dust in the atmosphere. We’ll also do some early morning remote science, including Navcam cloud movies at zenith and at suprahorizon. Chilcotin River’s Landslide Lake Begins Draining
The threat of flash flooding on the Chilcotin River in British Columbia has subsided following a large landslide on July 30, 2024, that dammed the river. Water pooled and formed a lake behind the landslide deposit for several days until it began to find its way through on August 5, first as a trickle and then as a torrent.
The images above show the river on July 16, before the landslide (top image); on August 1, while water was backing up (middle image); and on August 9, after floodwater breached the landslide dam (bottom image), cutting a channel across the debris. Since the breach, water has scoured the channel and the river edges downstream, rapidly eroding material and discoloring the river with fine-grained sediment. All three images were captured by the OLI (Operational Land Imager) on Landsat 8.
The aerial photograph below, captured by a drone and shared by the Province of British Columbia, shows water on August 7 as it churned through the new channel. The second image below, acquired by Landsat 8 on August 9, shows sediment-laden water from the Chilcotin meeting the clearer waters of the Fraser River downstream of the landslide.

Water breached the landslide debris gradually, over a span of about 20 hours. As a result, flooding downstream caused less damage than had the breach occurred over only a few hours, explained Brian Menounos, a remote sensing scientist at the University of Northern British Columbia. Menounos has been working with the Hakai Institute, using lidar to map how the landscape around the landslide site and downriver has changed.
“Parts of the landslide deposit were fine-grained silts and sands that eroded quickly, but there were also units of till—unsorted sediments deposited by glaciers—that were quite compact and resistant to erosion, almost like bedrock,” Menounos said. “The till really slowed the process down and prevented an abrupt failure.”
The flooding did cause some damage to a key bridge and indigenous cultural sites along the river. After the river returned to a more normal flow, Canadian authorities lifted flood warnings and watches and downgraded evacuation warnings.

Still, Menounos and other scientists continue to monitor the situation closely to assess how the increased loads of sediment and the new obstacle in the river might affect the ecosystem. “The lake isn’t entirely drained yet,” Menounos said. “There is still concern that some of the till piled in the river could make it difficult for salmon to get upstream to spawn.”

Craters are a familiar sight on the lunar surface and indeed on many of the rocky planets in the Solar System. There are other circular features that are picked up on images from orbiters but these pits are thought to be the collapsed roofs of lava tubes. A team of researchers have mapped one of these tubes using radar reflection and created the first 3D map of the tube’s entrance. Places like these could make ideal places to setup research stations, protected from the harsh environment of an alien world.  Lava tubes have been hotly debated for the last 50 years. They are the result of ancient volcanic activity and develop when the surface of a lava flow cools and hardens. Below this, the molten lava continues to move and eventually drains away leaving behind a hollow tunnel. Exploring these tunnels can mean we can learn more about the geological history of the Moon from the preserved records in the rocks.  The lava tubes have been the subject of analysis by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) which began its journey in 2009. It’s purpose was to gather information about the Moon’s surface and environment and to that end has a plethora of scientific equipment. LRO has been mapping the lunar surface using high resolution imagery capturing temperature, radiation levels and water ice deposits. Credit: ASU/LROC A team of scientists from around the world have been working together to make a breakthrough in the quest to understand these tubes. The research was led by the University of Trento in Italy and the results published in Nature Astronomy. They have identified the first, confirmed tunnel just under the surface of the Moon that seems to be an empty lava tube. Until now, their existence was just a theory, now they are a reality.  The discovery would not have been possible without the LRO and its Miniature Radio-Frequency instrument. In 2010 it surveyed Mare Tranquilitatis – location for Apollo 11’s historic lunar landing in 1969 – capturing data which included the region around a pit. As part of this new research the data was reanalysed with modern complex signal processing techniques. The analysis revealed previously unidentified radar reflections that can best be explained by an underground cave or tunnel. Excitingly perhaps is that this represents an underground tunnel on the surface of the Moon but it is an accessible tunnel too. Credit: NASA The discovery highlights the importance of continued analysis of historical data, even from decades ago for hidden information that modern techniques can reveal. It also highlights the importance of further remote sensing and lunar exploration from orbit to identify more lava tubes as potential safe havens for lunar explorers.  Travellers to the Moon can experience temperatures on the illuminated side of 127 degrees down to -173 degrees on the night time side. Radiation from the Sun can rocket – pardon the pun – to 150 times more powerful than here on Earth and that’s not even considering the threat of meteorite impacts. We are protected from thousands of tonnes of the stuff thanks to the atmosphere but there is no protective shield on the Moon.
