Sydney-based filmmaker Mary Zournazi’s upcoming documentary ‘Rembetika Blues’ traverses Australia, Egypt, Greece, Italy, the US and UK to chronicle how the haunting Greek rebel music become the soundtrack for forced migration.
Rembetika was borne out of the 1922 catastrophe of Smyrna which led to the migration of 2 million Greek refugees from Asia Minor who fled to Greece, Russia, Australia and the United States.
Zournazi’s grandmother was one of those refugees and it wasn’t until she began researching the events surrounding Smyrna that it became apparent that she was unaware of this significant period that shaped modern Greece.
“It’s a whole history that is not part of history,” she explained to Neos Kosmos. “I knew I had a grandmother who fled but I didn’t really know the detail of it. I had never really investigated it and had never seen the footage until I saw the archive of the whole city burning and it’s horrific. There is one scene of a well-dressed Greek family on a rocking boat trying to flee on a ship. This is the same scene we see with refugees today, just 100 years back, walking through the countryside to get across land. That is the most shocking part, that history keeps repeating itself.”
While Zournazi’s documentary explores the Smyrna disaster the film is not just a story of a forgotten war. It is a parallel story of forced migration and how almost 100 years apart Rembetika has become not just the sound track of Greek refugees from Smyrna but also Syrian refugees to Greece.

Σταύρος Λ. Ξαρχάκος & Νίκος Γκάτσος – Ρεμπέτικο
Σταύρος Λ. Ξαρχάκος & Νίκος Γκάτσος – Ρεμπέτικο
Greece, 1983, rembetika / film soundtrack This is the soundtrack to a 1983 film called **Ρεμπέτικο**, which translates to “rembetiko”, literally the genre this album is. I’ve not seen the film and probably never will, but it’d be like naming a movie “The Blues” and then making a soundtrack to the film and calling it “The Blues”, too, and then RYM would have it categorized as Blues genre. Listed: Mountain Movers
Tumblr media
For the best part of a decade Mountain Movers has been singer-guitarist Dan Greene and bassist Rick Omonte; drummer Ross Menze and lead guitarist Kryssi Battalene joined up in 2011. For most of that time they’ve kept to their home base in New Haven CT, recording albums that map out a terrain bounded by early True West, 1960s garage swagger, and your favorite PSF freak-outs. In 2017 the quartet gave an especially expansive, self-titled LP to Trouble In Mind Records, and this summer they hit the road in support of it, thus this road listening-themed list.
Dope/Fresh Mix
Tumblr media
This is a mixtape given to me by a friend in 1989 that is stacked with 1980s hip-hop. My interest in hip-hop grew in the mid-1980s when punk clubs would blast Public Enemy to amp up the crowd before the bands took the stage. By 1988 I was hooked. This mix features jams by Eric B and Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Stetsasonic, EPMD, MC Lyte, De La Soul, and the Jungle Brothers. Instant dance party when this cassette hits the deck. (DG)
The Feelies — Crazy Rhythms
youtube
In 1986, when The Feelies released The Good Earth, I was moved enough to write them fan mail. They sent me a signed press photo which I taped to my locker at school. A year later, when I sat on the stage in Providence watching them play live for the first time, I was moved enough to want to start a band. Immediately, I began teaching myself guitar by playing along to Feelies records. (DG)
Kraftwerk — Radio-activity
youtube
Like many other fans: Bowie led me to Eno, Eno led me to Kraftwerk, Kraftwerk led me to Can, and Can introduced me to all the other German experimental groups. There is something so mesmerizing and comforting about their minimalism and homemade beats. When people say Kraftwerk’s music leaves them cold, I never understand what they’re talking about… (DG)
Syd Barrett
Tumblr media
This is a mix of Syd songs given to me by a friend in high school packed with heavy hitters: Baby Lemonade, Rats, Gigolo Aunt, Wined and Dined etc. In those days, I was mostly listening to music on SST or Dischord. Syd’s mysterious songs led me directly into new music coming out on labels like Homestead, Shimmy Disc and K Records.  (DG)
Cabaret Voltaire — Mix-Up
youtube
Mix-Up is Cabaret Voltaire’s first studio album.  They are my favorite most psychedelic industrial group. I love how they could sound so unsettling and also floaty and free at the same time. Richard H. Kirk is shredding echo-y leads on woodwinds and guitar the whole time and it rules. (KB)
Crystalized Movements — Mind Disaster
Tumblr media
I learned about Crystalized Movements thanks to Joe from Willimantic Records giving me a 7” comp he put out with them on it. They’re from CT! Wayne Rogers sounds incredible here even as a high schooler his leads are raging and they are getting far out. (KB)
Heron Oblivion — S/T
Heron Oblivion by Heron Oblivion
Easily my favorite album of 2016. It’s a really beautiful album from beginning to end. (KB)
Hiiragi Fukuda — Personal Server
Tumblr media
Both me and Rick have brought this tape into the car on different occasions. The cassette features seven dreamy solo electric guitar pieces recorded live to a handheld cassette recorder. His guitar tone is very clean and you can appreciate how beautiful his guitar playing is. (KB)
Julia Illanes — Sol Radiante
Tumblr media
There is a very special place in my heart reserved for huayno music from Peru, especially huayno accompanied by Andean harp. Julia Illanes is a folkloric singer that has, for decades, been a voice of the working class people who sacrifice everything to make a living. Her beautiful voice sings of politics, economy, loss, love, and other social conditions that play a large part of migrant workers' lives.  I first fell in love with huayno music on a very long bus ride throughout southern Peru, so it always feels like music to travel to. Melancholy but upbeat, bitter but sweet, tortured but alive, if tezeta, rembetika, or folk-blues are your thing, huayno might be your next favorite bummer. (RO)
Omar Souleyman — Bahdeni Nani
youtube
On permanent heavy rotation, it seems me and D. Greene are always coming back to Omar Souleyman. One of Syria's greatest known exports, Mr. Souleyman tours the world and collaborates with superstars. Blinding fast drum beats, dizzying synth sounds, and Omar's smokey/smooth voice are the perfect party blend. When this cassette is played, things are turned up a few notches. (RO)

6 Reasons to Visit Thessaloniki, Greece
01 of 06
Attend a Feast of Festivals
Thessaloniki Travel
From high art to street art, popular culture to cultural excellence—Thessaloniki reels from one international festival to another throughout the year. These are just a few:
Reworks brings together an eclectic mix of music—from experimental sound to modern classical music and contemporary electronics. It's five days and nights of performances by well established and emerging artists from across Europe.
The Street Mode Festival is a four-day celebration of live, street-based performances and visual arts. There's music, gigs, DJ sets, and MC competitions; graffiti and street art shows and competitions; street dance and street sports—parcour, freerunning, and BMX. Also, lots of side events and a children's program.
Thessaloniki International Film Festival is a November celebration of the best in contemporary filmmaking with shows, forums, professional masterclasses, and discussions. Missed it at TriBeCa or Sundance? Catch up with it in Thessaloniki.
The Dimitria Festival, a major cultural event in autumn combining art exhibitions, music, theater and dance performances, films, discussions, and workshops. Artists, performers and experts gather from all over the world.

Stay out All Night
Thessaloniki Travel
Nightlife is one of the main reasons Thessaloniki should be on your 2018 hot list. Whether it's tavernas with live rembetika music or vast pulsating clubs, the party goes on into the wee hours in pockets of entertainment scattered around the city. , National Geographic recently named it one of the top ten cities in the world for nightlife, claiming more bars and cafes per capita than any other city in Europe.
Try Mylos. It's a vast entertainment and nightlife space that was once a flour mill in the warehouse area of Port in the western part of the city. It's full of cafes and bars, music venues, concert, exhibition and performance spaces, and hundreds of milling revelers. It's where the Reworks Festival is usually based. Or check out what's happening at Fix, the Fix Factory of Sound, a live music venue that has concerts and club nights and a kind of mosh pit scene.
For less hectic nightlife, stroll the restaurant and entertainment district of Ladadika where there are plenty of bars and cafes with music. And look for rembetika, the traditional, political blues music of Greece, in rembetadiko—small tavernas where musicians sit on the edge of the stage and perform while people eat and drink. Rembetika is the Portuguese Fado or the Canto Flamenco of Greece and these days it's the hipster's choice.

Enjoy a Vibrant, Eclectic Restaurant Scene
Thessaloniki Travel
Thessaloniki's great variety of informal dining and modern, irreverent interpretations of traditional dishes—at very reasonable prices—has recently won the city the title of Gastronomic Capital of Greece.
Some districts are better than others for grazers and diners alike. Try Ladadika for lively bistros, island-inspired dishes, and a casual, young atmosphere. In the seafood and vegetarian heaven that is Greece, Palati is a good choice for meat eaters and there's usually bouzouki music to go with.
Along the Port area, restaurants and cafes are a bit pricier, because of the seafront views. But the people watching here is great, so plan to at least have coffee or sunset drinks. And for a special, bust-the-budget blowout, try 7 Thalassas for very good seafood.
For some of the best views and an ever-changing selection of little, family-run places, head uphill to the area known as Ano Poli (for Old Town) where you can dine overlooking the whole of the city and port, beside ancient castle walls, for as little as about €20 per person. Downhill from there, Tsinari Square has airy, open cafes and plenty of accomplished, modern variations on traditional mezethedes.
While in Thessaloniki, be on the lookout for Eastern European influenced dishes such as stuffed cabbage or piroshki and try to find the very local specialty known as trahana. It's a cracked wheat or couscous dish served with yogurt or sour milk.

Wander Great Galleries and Museums
Thessaloniki Travel
Considering the city's location at the crossroads of European and Ottoman culture, you'd naturally expect Thessaloniki to have some terrific museums of ancient history. And the city does not disappoint. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, one of the largest museums in Greece, traces the civilization of Macedonia from pre-history to late antiquity and it's crammed with dazzling ancient treasures.
The Museum of Byzantine Culture opened to much applause in the 1990s, is home to collections that cover the transformation of Roman religion and the early Christian Church to the 15th-century fall of Constantinople.
But if you're not into ancient history, there are wonderful contemporary museums and galleries such as:
The architecturally interesting Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art.
The Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, with regular and internationally relevant exhibitions and events.
The small but interesting Cinema Museum and Film Collection, the only cinema museum in Greece and hub for the city's annual film festival.
The Olympic Museum of Thessaloniki, the only museum of its kind officially recognized by the Olympic Committee.
There's even a museum devoted to basketball, The ARIS Basketball Museum.
Continue to 5 of 6 below.

Explore Ancient Monuments in a Modern Setting
Thessaloniki Travel
Like most major cities in the Balkans, the built environment of Thessaloniki has suffered more than its fair share of war wounds. Much of the city has been built or rebuilt during the 20th and 21st centuries.
But the evidence of ancient Byzantine and Ottoman architecture is dotted all around the city, each standing out like a gem in its modern setting.
Some, like the White Tower, are prominent and important. The tower, which has become a symbol of Thessaloniki, was a 15th-century Ottoman fortification, built to replace an earlier Byzantine fortress. Only 75 visitors are allowed in at one time. Even if you aren't a history buff, it's worth the climb to the top (34 meters—about 10 stories) for the views.
Others, like the Byzantine Baths, are found in hidden corners of residential districts. The baths were built around 1300 and, remarkably, were fully functional for almost seven centuries—until 1940.

Hit Some UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Thessaloniki Tourism
The whole of Thessaloniki is UNESCO listed as an Open Museum of Early Christian and Byzantine Art. There are 15 different buildings, sites, and monuments in the listing that covers the transition from Roman through early Christian times to the Ottoman occupation.
You can follow the trail of the Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki but if that seems like too much hard work, at least visit The Rotunda, a remarkable building that has survived earthquakes and empires and has fragmentary remains of beautiful early mosaics.
The Rotunda, along with the Arch of Galerius nearby, started life as part of a Roman Emperor Galerius's 4th-century imperial palace. Emperor Constantine had it consecrated as a church. It remained a church for 1,200 years until Thessaloniki fell to the Ottoman Empire. In the 16th century, it became the Mosque of Suleyman Hortaji Effendi and it still has the minaret—the only one in the city—that was added then. Finally, in 1912, when the Ottoman Turks were expelled from Greece, the Rotunda was reconsecrated as a Greek Orthodox Church.
Today, it is formally known as the Church of Agios Georgios but most people refer to it simply as the Rotunda. A huge and impressive example of late Roman architecture, it is a must visit site.

There is probably no more ridiculous development in the history of and writing about music than the notion of ‘labels’. Taking a piece of music and categorising it into a single ‘genre’ or ‘style’ is an exercise in futility.  Oft quoted but eternally ignored, Duke Ellington’s saw that there is only ‘good music and the other kind’ remains all there needs to be said about the problem.
Yet, for those of us who think possessing massive music libraries is an important thing, the issue is a practical one. Whether you have walls and walls of LPs, racks of CDs or hard discs full of digital files, having everything labelled simply ‘good’ or ‘other’ is not particularly helpful.  And unless you know every album or track in your collection intimately and can find it easily, most of the time you’re going to find labels and tags and categories a necessary, if silly, evil.
In recent years these labels and genres have proliferated like so many psychedelic rabbits. I’m forever amused by the new labels people come up with for their music: shoegazer, bedwetter, garage punk, bubbletrance, aggrotech, crustpunk, deep psychobilly, fidget house etc. etc.   What the delicate idiosyncrasies of each category are, are beyond me and probably to those who listen to them as well, but it is fun that’s for sure.  My own practice is to keep it simple. Pop, World, Jazz, Reggae, Country, Blues, R&B, Classical and a few other old fashioned labels I picked up from the record stores I used to haunt suit me just fine.
But the challenges keep popping up.
Take today’s share for example.  The album is called Disco Jazz, which sounds like the producers couldn’t be bothered to think of anything interesting. Slap a couple labels on it and see if it sells. The Indian Canadian production from the early 80s certainly (in some parts) qualifies as disco-esque. But definitely not jazz. Unless by jazz you mean slang for ‘stuff’.  On the internet the album is labelled, ‘funk, soul, disco’ and even ‘Bollywood funk’.  Not so much misleading as plain irrelevant. There is nothing funky here that James Brown or the boys from Cymande would recognise and, as for soul, well, that’s just another planet.  So, how does one label this music?
For my money this is non-film Indian pop music sung in Bengali.  The singer is a mysterious sukhi roti– looking college girl named Rupa Biswas. Not a spectacular voice by Indian standards but given its focus on getting people on the dance floor, adequate to the task.  What is really interesting about this record is the music.
India was introduced to the concept of disco music in the early 80s through (what else) the movies. Though it wasn’t the first, Firoz Khan’s 1980 blockbuster Qurbani (Sacrifice) used the sound of upbeat, semi-electronic synth and bass, disco lights and scantily clad women instrumentalists (prefiguring Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love by half a decade)  to mesmerise a nation.
Aap Jaisa Koi  was India’s first massive disco hit and led to the creation of a new sound that infiltrated the movies for the next ten years. The most famous names in Indian disco were larger-than-life musical director Bappi Lahiri and composer/arranger/performer Babla. Though both men produced some interesting work that has found new audiences in recent years, they never ventured too far from the Qurbani sound.
Disco Jazz on the other hand is in an entirely different realm. Biswas is backed by a crack group of Indian and Canadian musicians led by none other than Ustad Aashish Khan, one of India’s outstanding living musicians on sarod. Khan has long collaborated with Western pop and jazz musicians, led so called ‘fusion’ groups [Shringar, Wonderwall, Shanti] promoted Indian classical music through his educational efforts and scored or participated in the soundtracks for films such The Man Who Would Be King, Gandhi and a number of Satyajit Ray’s films.
Tumblr media
Ustad Aashish Khan
He’s supported by the amazing guitarist Don Pope, who with Khansahib creates the energy and drive and excitement of this record.
Popeand Khan trade solos and jugalbandi back and forth throughout this set daring the rest of the band that includes renown jazz drummer Robin Tufts, bassist John Johnston, tablasaaz and accompanist of Ali Akbar Khan and others, Pranesh Khan, keyboardist Geoff Ball, synthesizer Rhonda Padmos, and percussionist Frank Lockwood to keep pace. Pope’s guitar playing is fluid, gliding effortlessly between jazzy textures and hot dancefloor strumming.  As for the sarod, Aashish Khan makes it sound as if he’s playing a mandolin or bazouki in a back street rembetika outfit.
This disco is about as far away from Bappi Lahiriand Qurbani as you can get.  It is tough, serious, masterful but still immense fun.
Whatever became of Rupa Biswas?  Of all the principals, she is the hardest to track down.  One of the tracks from Disco Jazz, Moja Bhari Moja, was included in the 2012 ‘art’ film Miss Lovely but the only other reference I’ve been able to track down to a Rupa Biswas is of a Bengali woman purported to be Rupa, lip syncing and dancing.  Not sure if this is THE Rupa or if it is a completely different Ms. Biswas altogether.  But it sounds a bit disco-y so my bet is Rupa is still out there somewhere.
Disco Jazz is a rare jewel. I hope you enjoy it.
    Track Listing:
Moja Bhari Moja
East West Shuffle
Aaj Shanibar
Aaye Morshume Be-Reham Duniya

Hidden Jewel: Rupa Biswas There is probably no more ridiculous development in the history of and writing about music than the notion of ‘labels’.

Skolias & Bester – Rebetiko Poloniko
Skolias & Bester – Rebetiko Poloniko
Poland, 2019, rembetika Rembetika is popularly referred to as “Greek blues”, and this collaborative recording features a deep, expressive vocalist and a carefree, evocative accordion player. From my brief research, I think the songs herein are not original compositions but tunes from the 1920s and 30s, but of course they are performed with the artists’ own interpretations and improvisations.

new arrivals 4-27-17
record store day was a wonderful thing this year - so many happy people talking about great records and enjoying each other and music. as always - our volunters made th whole thing possible, as did all the great people who stopped by and said hello, looked at records, and celebrated with us. thank you everyone!! you all make what we do possible! we have decided to continue the in-store sales/discounts for a few more weeks. used 45s are 20% off, used rock cds 20% off, used indie cds are half off, and used tapes are half off. new items coming in NEXT week for the may 5th release date - Slowdive S/T new album (hoping for silver vinyl) on lp and cd - their first in 22 years!!Slowdive’s second act as a live blockbuster has already been rapturously received around the world. Highlights thus far include a festival-conquering, sea-of-devotees Primavera Sound performance, of which Pitchfork noted: “The beauty of their crystalline sound is almost hard to believe, every note in its perfect place.” Bonnie Prince Billy covers Merle Haggard on lp and cdBonnie "Prince" Billy, also known as Will Oldham, is a longtime fan of the "Okie From Muskogee" Hall of Famer, having covered a Haggard song at his first public performance 25 years ago. He also interviewed the legendary songwriter for a magazine feature in 2009 and included a cover of "Because of Your Eyes" on a 7" vinyl release in 2011.Best Troubadour is the culmination of that decades-long love affair with Haggard's music, featuring 16 tracks from various stages of Haggard's lengthy career. Oldham recorded the songs in his home with the Bonafide United Musicians. Moon Duo Occult Architecture  Vols 1 and 2 on lp Meaning all things magick and supernatural, the root of the word occult is that which is hidden, concealed, beyond the limits of our minds. If this is occult, then the Occult Architecture of Moon Duo’s fourth album - a psychedelic opus in two separate volumes released in 2017 - is an intricately woven hymn to the invisible structures found in the cycle of seasons and the journey of day into night, dark into light. ALICE COLTRANE new lp and cdAlice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda’s devotion to spirituality was the central purpose of the final four decades of her life, an often-overlooked awakening that largely took shape during her four year marriage to John Coltrane and after his 1967 death. By 1983, Alice had established the 48- acre Sai Anantam Ashram outside of Los Angeles. She quietly began recording music from the ashram, releasing it within her spiritual community in the form of private press cassette tapes. On May 5, the record label Luaka Bop, founded by David Byrne, will release the first-ever compilation of recordings from this period, making these songs available to the wider public for the first time. Entitled ‘World Spirituality Classics, Volume 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda', the release is the first installment in a planned series of spiritual music from around the globe; curated, compiled and distributed by Luaka Bop. also expecting recent releases from Children of Alice (broadcast side project), Doug Tuttle, Bardo Pond, Creation box, Sun Ra singles 1 and 2, and much more!!!! for this week - the week of April 27th, 2017, we have these items for you!! FAUSTFresh Air LP+CD  $26.99LP version. Includes CD. Faust's new album Fresh Air differs in several respects from its predecessor, Just Us (BB 182CD/LP, 2014). The recordings were made at Jean-Hervé Péron's rehearsal studio in Schiphorst in northern Germany, hypnotic pieces with the kind of noisemaking the band is known for. For the new album, Péron and Werner "Zappi" Diermaier were looking for communication with musician friends and the audience. The tracks were recorded in changing ensembles at changing locations in the USA (during a tour in 2016). In these community recordings, with friendly support from Péron's database of field recordings, a strongly shaded noise music emerged which extends its feelers to the remotest corners of the here and now. Droning, swinging, lusting for freedom, here and there holding out quite stoically as machine-room blues. On board are the freely fabulous Barbara Manning in a live lecture, Jürgen Engler (Die Krupps) in overdub, and Ysanne Spevack as a wonderful wave-maker on the viola. The seven and a half minute title track begins with the poem by a French school friend of Péron (translated and recited in Polish) and ends in an industrial sound inferno. The singer cries for "Fresh Air" as if it is being taken away from him. Jean-Hervé Péron offers a political reading: "Can you breathe calmly here, or are we being poisoned?" "Engajouez Vous!" Péron presents this franco-Faustian artificial word to the audience and rewrites the Marseillaise for the here and now in the track "Chlorophyl". And finally, Zappi has his mini-dada performance with "Schnobs" and "Bia": a small dialect-based text piece, which starts with chlorophyl, goes over the meadow past the cow and lands with the farmer who drinks a beer and schnapps and suddenly sees two cows. The story of the band can tell that tale nicely. As Krautrockers, Faust had a worldwide career. On their first three albums in the early 1970s, they inhabited the vast field from improvisation to bricolage to rock'n'roll with the ease of rogues and the determination of declared sonic renegades. One can still feel the breathing of this music in current Faust pieces, in the stone-age thudding of "Fish", which Faust anticipated in 1972 on "Mamie Is Blue". "We let the music play through us," says Jean-Hervé Péron. Jean-Hervé Péron has a little tip for us: Listen to the fish. CORTINI & MASAMI AKITA, ALESSANDROAlessandro Cortini & Masami Akita 2LP  $39.99Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) and Japanese noise legend Masami Akita (Merzbow) share a mutual love for the EMS Synthi, a British synthesizer from the early '70s notorious for its patch matrix, portability, and distinct tone. Astonishingly, these two disparate artists meld into a single sound as they flex the analog circuitry of the EMS Synthi in new ways; giving this classic synth a modern workout and proving that, in capable hands, a 40-year-old analog synthesizer is a tool for the ages. Metallic shimmer print on heavy duty jackets; 180 gram vinyl. VA: I Believe I'll Go Back Home LP $16.99"A sequel (of sorts) to the I Don't Feel At Home In this World Anymore compilation. The stone cold beautiful African guitar playing and singing of Sabelo and G. Wayawaya, the intense Native American country music of Jenks 'Tex' Carman, the great Tex Mex of Lydia Mendoza, the heavy hypnotic Cajun sounds of Amede Ardion and Dennis McGee, the shimmeringly beautiful singing and playing of the Genial Hawaiians, the deep deep deep Rembetika of Marika Papagika, the soulful gospel of Blind Willie Davis, the sacred Indian sounds of T.R. Mahalingham and Khansahib Abdul Karim Khan, the early Jewish mysticism of Max Leibowitz, the dark Cuban rumbles of Sexteto Bologna and much more. Here we have a diverse cross section of the world's music - a unifying sound during divisive times. Old school 'tip on' cover." VAContaminazioni No Wave Italiane (1980-1985)LP+CD  $27.99Taking up the gauntlet thrown down by New York's no wave scene, many Italian bands of the early '80s, playing far from the footlights of the world's stage, began creating compelling, and often cutting edge, hybrid sounds. This kind of experimenting soon went viral along the entire peninsula: from Southern Italy to the Alps, creating a brave new Italian take on post-punk. From the nervous white funk of Neopolitans Bisca, to the instrumental explorations of Confusional Quartet, to the "fake jazz" of the Hi-Fi Bros (who even had a track produced by Arto Lindsay), to Band Aid, this collection testifies to one of the most creative periods of the Italian underground. Also features: Eazycon, Modern Model, Die Form, Funkwagen, Nofun, Hakkah, Illogico, Rinf, and State Of Art. Includes CD; CD features the previously unreleased bonus track by La Maison, "Noise Express". ANDRIESSEN, JURRIAANThe Awakening Dream LP  $25.99LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Jurriaan Andriessen's The Awakening Dream, originally released in 1977. Jurriaan Andriessen (1925-1996) was a Dutch composer. Although he was actually at home in classical music, he recorded three synthesizer albums in the late 1970s, the first of which, The Awakening Dream, is an outstanding excursion into experimental ambient and minimal music. Andriessen himself, 52 years of age at the time, called it a "trance symphony". The music - perhaps surprisingly for a contemporary classical composer - is less in the tradition of his peers such as Pierre Boulez or Karlheinz Stockhausen and more in tune with the electronic sounds of the '70s emanating from Berlin, Düsseldorf, or Forst, the likes of Cluster, early Kraftwerk, and Tangerine Dream, in places echoing Conrad Schnitzler. Andriessen was familiar with the work of these artists, but was probably more influenced by minimalist composers like Philip Glass or synthesizer pioneer Walter Carlos whom he admired. The entire album is played on a Minimoog Model D, a Fender Rhodes piano, a Hohner Clavinet, and a Philicorda organ. It was recorded sound on sound, before the 8-track machine entered the studio, using two Revox A77 tape recorders. Andriessen studied in Paris with Olivier Messiaen and in the USA with Serge Koussevitsky and Aaron Copland. Back in Holland he worked for radio, television and theatre. His compositions for state ceremonies such as the coronation of Queen Beatrix and the annual "Opening of Parliament" won him acclaim and he also wrote the music for the Oscar winning film The Assault (1986). Andriessen started to experiment with synthesizers on new compositions in the early 1970s. In 1973, he wrote music for Georg Büchner's play Leonce And Lena and performed it on the ARP 2500 synthesizer. Andriessen was more interested in the challenge of creating new, previously unheard sounds than he was in imitating existing instruments. He strived to invent a novel, unique musical universe. Later he worked mainly with a Minimoog Model D, experimenting and recording in the Dream Studio, the home studio he built with his sons Gijs and Nils in The Hague. As a composer, Jurriaan was always ahead of his time. He loved research and enjoyed using uncommon or newly invented instruments in his compositions, often in unconventional formations. His last work, Jeux Des Vents, appeared in 1996. He died later the same year in The Hague. CROATIAN AMORFinding People 12"  $15.99An assembly of choral traces and transmissions, these four new tracks are Croatian Amor's clearest move towards pop. At the same time, this is perhaps the weirdest record yet from Croatian Amor, introducing a complexity previously not seen. From the cut-up, granulated rhythm section and auto-tuned choir of the opener "Sky Walkers", to the duetting ballad of "Finding People" -- featuring additional vocals from new name Khalil -- the record never rests for long. The exploration is soothing, its search a tonic to the swarm of emotion it provokes.
