i could not put modern enbies into this setting. the necessary cultural preconditions did not exist; the man and woman of this society are not quite the same ones we have so how the hell could our not-those schema port in? i wasn't trying to recreate any specific historical society but the external...basically the logistical conditions underlying certain gender role trends discussed above were in place, and fitting Recognition Of Nonbinary Identities into that society would involve intensive and severely-theme-undermining reconstruction work. so no. even picturing the result pissed me off in exactly the way op is discussing.

however. i did have some nomadic werewolves who could get some cool narrative background work done with a culturally specific third gender that tied into the phases of the moon.

and i had an elderly mentor character who had declined to specify a gender or any backstory details thus far and i was like, well this character is already casually living outside of the established boundaries of society and somehow thriving, what if hyhault declines to specify a gender to anybody ever, not just me. just laughs and says pick one. that would do a lot of work for both the character and the themes actually.

also when populating the historical religious landscape i tucked in a minor messianic figure who received local cult status back in the day and resisted gender classification because of being a star and not subject to that kind of thing.

so now i have nonbinary representation in my medieval vampire setting, and it's not really important to the narrative but it's not extraneous either, and it does fit naturally into the world and add dimension to it.

the female protagonist's relationship with gender roles is considerably enriched as a result.

All the cultural relativism going away in a person's worldbuilding once they get to sexuality & gender
