Sometimes, in sharing our testimonies, we unintentionally make it seem like our lives suddenly turned 180 degrees after our first encounter with Jesus, like the struggles and hardships immediately disappeared like magic. There are times we forget that the transformation He brings is gradual and the journey of going deeper in our relationship with Him is a process--there are still struggles, there are still temptations, hardships remain. But the biggest difference from then to now is that we are stronger, we are braver all because we are facing these struggles with Him, through Him, and for Him.

“Jesus was not safe, at all,” McMillan says. “I’ve been in church my whole life and I’ve been a Christian a long time and I’ve always had a difficult time connecting with the expression of the Church. That’s really why I started writing music, I think, because I needed to be able to say those kinds of things.

After all, the Book of Isaiah reminds us that all of our righteousness is like filthy rags. What God wants is a person’s whole heart - the whole nasty thing. 

“How silly would it be to say, ‘OK, Jesus died so we could sing Him songs,’” McMillan says. “I think He died for us because He wanted a relationship with people, and the music is a part of that relationship. If you get the music away from that, it’s just music.”

I'm really excited for everyone to see the new issue of @RELEVANTmagazine. It's hard to fathom I've been at this for 16 years now, but through the thousands of articles we've published, there are certain ones that just jump out. They're the articles that maybe open your eyes about something, or challenge your worldview, or help you see God or engage culture differently. The ones where you go, "YES. This is why we exist—this is a conversation that wouldn't have happened except in RELEVANT." This Ira Glass article is one of those moments for me. He's arguably one of the most influential (or at least perceptive) people in American culture, and though he's an atheist, to hear him talk about why he's compelled to tell the stories of Christians and faith on 'This American Life' is incredibly interesting. His intentionality at bridge-building is remarkable, and something we can all learn from. And then you add @johnnyswim, @lauren_daigle, @amishobaraka, @mattchandler74, @gungormusic, @bastilledan and more to that and, yeah, I just can't wait for you all to see this issue. I'm grateful we still get to make media we're excited about after all these years. (And if you knew what we're currently working on—man, the best is easily yet to come.) That's a fun way to kick off a new year. 🙏🏼
