This review of the recent exhibition, Wantok at Māngere Arts Centre – Ngā Tohu o Uenuku was originally written for ARTtalk (Issue 12), Fiji’s independent online art magazine.
As a curator, I view exhibitions in a few different ways. I think about the artwork and its medium, its politics and its placement. The artist – their positionality, their background and their message. The lighting even, the layout and feel of the Gallery. I think about the curator and their agenda, the experience of the audience, and often, the relationship of the exhibition themes to the exhibition’s site; who is this exhibition for?
Wantok is a group show of new work by nine Melanesian women artists, including the work of its curator. Produced for Māngere Arts Centre – Ngā Tohu o Uenuku, Wantok is part of the Gallery’s commitment to celebrating the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage, the landmark moment Aotearoa New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to grant all women the right to vote in parliamentary elections. Māngere Arts Centre is a local government funded facility situated in the South Auckland suburb of Māngere, well known for its large, youthful and well-established Polynesian population.
The exhibition’s curator is Luisa Tora, a Fijian writer and visual artist who now calls Ōtāhuhu, South Auckland, home. She has invited artists to make new work around the theme of “decolonised views of beauty and mana through the lens of spirituality and symbolism associated with hair in Melanesian cultures”. The artists all live in Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne and represent ancestral connections to Fiji, Tokelau, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Granada (Caribbean), the South Sea Islander community, Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
In the case of the arts landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand, where Oceania is commonly viewed and understood through a Polynesian lens, this presentation of Melanesian diaspora experience requires context. This can be done effectively with well-crafted artwork labels and interpretive text, but this is absent from the show and the potential to diversify public perceptions about the wider Oceania region and the richness of Melanesian diaspora experience is frustratingly lost. Whilst much of the work in the exhibition is fighting hard to have space to be understood and interpreted, so many nuances of the artists’ approaches, thinking and themes are lost by not offering audiences ways for this work to be heard.
However, there is presence in the space. The presence of Melanesian women, of brown skin, and the clear control of those bodies and that representation in front, and behind the lens. And with four different video-based works in the two galleries, the exhibition is noisy! There are voices, conversations and laughing coming from the works of Torika Bolatagici and Salote Tawale, but a watery soundtrack emanating from a large-scale projected video work by Tufala Meri (the creative partnership of sisters, Molana and Reina Sutton) fills most of the exhibition’s soundscape.
Torika Bolatagici’s striking Tadrua Series (the space between) (2018) is six large scale portraits of strong, brown skinned women and girls with curly hair maintaining mesmerising connections with the camera. They are larger than life, a kind of feminine futuristic visual anthropology of Oceania. Whilst each image represents the same upper part of the body, each subject holds themselves differently; there are anthologies in the stories behind their eyes, equal parts strength and vulnerability in their postures, and pride and presence in their hair. In the accompanying video work, Tadra (to dream), the subjects are filmed resting on the acrylic kali, a kind of futuristic Fijian headrest made in collaboration with Lienors Torre and Shaun Bangay. The object itself sits unassumingly in the corner of the gallery on a plinth; set on a motion sensor, and with an internal sound device, occasionally women’s voices emanate from it, talking story about hair and rituals.
The stories and conversations from Bolatagici’s kali informed another collaborative aspect of this ambitious project in the form of a performative response by Ayeesha Ash and Emele Ugavule (members of the Sydney-based Black Birds collective). Marking the opening of the exhibition, Ash and Ugavule’s performance was meditative and graceful. They moved through the space, filling the room with Fijian vocal harmonies, amplifying the hair as an extension of the body and in its cutting, a significant act of bodily and emotional detachment. Their performance gave life to the space, connecting the artwork on the walls, to the audience who had come to greet it.
Jasmine Togo-Brisby’s large scale lightboxes depict photographic portraits of herself, her daughter and her mother, each with long curly hair adorned with a model sailing ship on top of their heads. Their gazes vary, and their garb is Victorian and formal. Without any context of the artist’s South Sea Islander genealogy and the history of the black birding slave trade in Melanesia, these works are perplexing, but confusing. Despite providing audiences with no context for this work and its themes, the light box is a beautiful medium that makes photography pop, commanding your attention.
Tufala Meri is sisters Molana and Reina Sutton. Their work includes five installations of domestic-like assemblages of photographs and objects, furniture and books, and a performative video work that is presented as a large scale full wall projection. In the video, the sisters initially appear to be very aware of the camera, holding poses with a large wooden bowl with characteristic Solomon Island shell inlay around the rim. They are standing next to a beautiful stream, on rocks, wearing similar neon patterned dresses and bare feet. The audio is watery, there is laughter and a woman’s voice. The sound of scrubbing, or rubbing can be heard, hoots and children’s giggles. It becomes clear that the video does not match the sound, but the two are related. The sisters gradually become more relaxed, and the shots tighten to capture closer views of their faces and actions. Suddenly, we see a photograph, another Melanesian woman – the sisters’ mother. The photograph is in the wooden bowl, it is carefully removed and placed on a rock, along with flowers and mementos.
Splashes and a sporadic deep rhythmic beat can be heard, almost like hearing the deep bass coming from someone’s headphones. The voices and laughter are joyful. We hear the presence and closeness of the water and the children… we hear a time and space, and we see another. The sisters play with each other’s hair, they laugh and splash and the light on the water running across boulders is almost golden. They use the wooden bowl to drench each other’s hair, which is thick and curly. The audio gets quiet, we see but we can’t hear. There is no more sound, just visuals, symbols – tattoos – body language, and land. The video ends with a final shot of the stream.
In conversation with Reina Sutton at the Wantok opening, I learned that the audio is from a home video of their late mother, shot in the Solomon Islands in 2008. It captures their mum at the river with her cousins, laughing, washing and the mesmerising beat that can be heard is water drumming. The work, Tufala Meri Blo Tiu lays the audio of their mother’s video over their own ‘home video’, filmed in Aotearoa New Zealand.
I spent time feeling mesmerised by this work and moved by the loving homage to their mother. I love that the scale of the video projection means their mother’s face is so large and present in the gallery, a beautiful and heartfelt dedication. Tufala Meri created a space for sitting, resting and being comfortable, which I appreciate; they effectively invite audiences to enjoy their work, be comforted and to listen and hear their message.
In a similar audio / video mash up, Salote Tawale’s video work, Polite Disguise (2018) overlays the sound of conversations between women about hair and othering with a series of performative Western beauty rituals. Tawale carries out the removal of her own hair via tweezers, scissors, hair clippers and adhesive strips. It is high definition, sometimes clumsy, and at points almost cringe-inducing and painful. In between her performative hair removal processes, the video intersperses popular hair product advertising jingles and YouTube-like vlogger cutaways. The work is shown on a monitor adorned with a large black and pink artificial flower garland that obstructs the corners of the screen, a confusingly unnecessary addition.
Dulcie Stewart’s series, Flora vitensis; drauniulu edition (2018) feels like the quietest work in the show. Stewart uses reproductions of botanical illustrations overlaid on the faces of Fijian women from ethnographic photographs, many of which exist in archives around the world with no biographic information about the subject. Stewart calls into question the visual ‘silencing’ of these women by rendering them nameless, disconnecting them from their past and their future. Interspersed with these photographic assemblages are a series of hand-drawn botanical illustrations of plants from Fiji, named Flora vitensis. In contrast to the ethnographic portraits, Flora vitensis are documented thoroughly, depicting their history and plant-based genealogy, uses and properties.
There’s a diplomacy about Stewart’s work, simultaneously thoughtful and confronting. She brings her interests in literature and archives, paper and records, together beautifully. She is both protector and promoter, reframing histories written about us but not for us.
The work I’m reluctant to mention, because curators being both author and artist in their own exhibitions is problematic, is a video portrait by Luisa Tora. In a topless self-portrait, Tora is superimposed against a galactic moving backdrop full of shooting stars, moons and planets. Her hair throbs outward from her head like a woolly halo, her stance stoic and defiant. Her gaze is not directly at the viewer and there’s an almost Mona Lisa like quality to the emotion or lack of emotion in her face. It’s a work that engages and titillates a lot of people because it’s ‘cool’, but for me feels like an unnecessary addition to the exhibition and something you might find if you type ‘God complex’ into a gif finder.
My friend Nigel Borell, a fellow curator, shared with me his appreciation of this show, noting that Auckland audiences appreciate the different framing of Pacific Islander experience. Whilst we are different, we have a shared imperialist histories and hair is a vessel for colonisation carrying ideas of shame and beauty, pride and presence. Nigel is right.
This exhibition could not be closer to my core as a Fijian woman curator living in South Auckland. Many of these artists are respected friends and peers, and their collective presence in the gallery is life-giving. I’ve spent hours in the space, because being close to these representations of Melanesian diaspora experience is affirming and empowering. Despite the lack of interpretive text and artwork labels, there is value in the presence of these works.
Curate is derived from the Latin term cūrā(re) meaning to care for, attend to. Luisa Tora cared enough to devise the concept of this exhibition, and Māngere Arts Centre offered space to bring it to life. The caring can’t stop at that; audiences are essential in enabling artwork to arrive, to be heard and to land. The dialogue between artwork and audience is what leaves the impression and changes culture. Hopefully the exhibition’s upcoming publication will deepen the impact of Wantok, but perhaps the most significant repercussion of this show is the connections forged between the artists and their efforts to be present in this space.

You are invited to celebrate with all the familiar faces you have missed for the past 15 years. Come join us as we renew friendships, reminisce about the days gone by, and share in life experiences both past and present. Let's bring the gang from the Thomas Jefferson High School's class of 2005 back together!
For further information on the events planned for our reunion and to know how to RVSP click the link down below.
Hope to see you there!
With best regards, Alicia McCarthy, your 2005 student council president.
PLOT SUMMARY: Fifteen years after graduation, the class of 2005 receives an invitation for their High School reunion week. Their student council at the time, Alicia, has made sure to bug everyone into coming back for the event. This is a discord based group verse that follows the class through their HS reunion but will also count with events happening back in 2005 for further development.

CLOSED / @suttxnhart LOCATION: The Studio
The parking lot at the Studio has all but cleared out and yet Reina finds herself still there, almost ten minutes after class has ended. She’s picking up both Madison and Iris today — Rowan’s got a late shift and Andy had some club business to finish up — and the girls have insisted on playing in the grassy area near the parking lot at the Studio. What could they possibly be playing with nothing around them but a few shrubs and a building? Reina’s got no fucking clue, but she’s pretty sure it has more to do with the fact that once they leave, Maddie will be heading home and they hate saying goodbye to each other. She’s told them they have five more minutes twice now, and she’s pretty sure she’s going to have to say it five more times before they actually decide to listen to her, so she pulls a cigarette out of her bag to at least give her some kind of distraction and help pass the time.
Lucky for her, Reina isn’t alone for long. Out the front doors of the dance studio comes Sutton, and she greets the woman with a look before taking a drag of the nicotine. It’s not quite a smile or a welcoming acknowledgment, but at least it’s something. “Want one?” she asks, holding her cigarette up in reference. She’s not sure if Sutton actually smokes but hell, half the Old Ladies of the club do, so it can’t hurt to ask. Speaking of — “Hey, did you hear about that bake sale we’re pulling together for the club? We’re raising money for some kids in the hospital, I believe.” Not that Reina actually knows for sure, but that’s beside the point. “Regardless, it looks good for the club to be charitable so it’d be nice if you could help out.” It’s less of a request and more of a demand, but Reina does manage to work up a smile as she says it. Figures that even though she’s technically not even an Old Lady anymore, she’s still parading around like she runs the show. In her mind, someone’s got to.

With the newly bought apple pie, Becky had made her way over to Reina’s house. She knew that probably no one was waiting to celebrate a birthday at the moment with the funeral of Sutton coming up, but to Becky it was probably the best way to make room for something else in her brain. She had done enough crying in her opinion so who else was better than Reina than to make her think about something else. She walked through the backdoor, letting herself in and it didn’t take long to find Reina. “I come bringing birthday cake so please don’t kick me out of the house.”

SPECIAL DELIVERY TO: @suttxnhart
LOCATION: Sutton’s office
DATE / TIME: July 6th around 8pm
Since Teagan’s evening with Sutton, where they spoke about the neurosurgeon’s growing romantic relationship with Jeremiah, the main focus was wrapped around the unknown of the shop’s future. There’s no possible way she could go through with rebuilding to the entirety of a shop that sent shivers down her mind. Physically, emotionally, and mentally, her passion always resided with taking care of patients and being the best neurosurgeon (even if she fails to express these words readily about herself) in the entire world. Being a business woman was never in her plans but the eldest Maron girl understood Lucille entrusted her for a multitude of reasons but importantly ─ if anything did happen to the shop, Teagan would not allow the honor of her presence to vanish from the town. And, it’s like Sutton is her saving grace by reading her mind and suggesting the space to be turned into a garden of sorts which is the main reason why her usual detour around Olympus doesn’t lead her home. Instead, she made a pit-stop at Calliope to pick up a takeout order whilst saying a polite hi to Reina before making way to Sutton’s office for an evening of catch up but importantly to see what vision her friend happens to have because she still remembers the illumination in the others hues from weeks prior.
A grip on the bag of food, the other pushing her way into the office whilst keeping her phone, wallet and keys gripped underneath her elbow to make sure the items didn’t fall. It’s no surprise that Teagan is not someone to come empty handed ─ regardless of the time or place. “Hey Sutt,” she greets in a beam, once fully inside. The first thing she does is set down the items that kept her breath hitched. Once they sit on the nearest table, her arms initiate a brace with the long-time friend, grateful and eager to see what their two minds can work together on this development. “Thanks for being able to do this meeting this late.” A thankful falsetto informs the other, pulling away after a moment. Seeing how its nearing two months since the storm’s destruction, the period of grieving about the downfall was long in the past and the structure was cleared, the next steps are necessary to continue with this momentum. “As you know, I never come empty handed so I brought us food to munch on.” Walking to the belongings to pull out the items from Calliope, hazel hues still catch a glimpse toward the friend’s direction. “How’ve you been? How’s Miss Eliza? Causing anymore havoc near the stairs again?”

@kaliharmon // closed starter
After working on the case for days, with mainly running on coffee, they seemed to have a lead. And who was he to go against the detectives actively working on the case? He already played it too close with Reina’s murder of Jason. He couldn’t act suspicious by suggesting that maybe it wasn’t Kali, whom he knew was one of Reina’s friends. Finally, they got a rushed arrest warrant from a judge which meant that they could make the arrest tonight.
Arriving at the Dive, he and a few other officers walked towards Kali. “Kali Harmon, you’re under arrest for the murder of Sutton Hart.” Once they got to the station, he’d read her the Miranda Rights. He expected her to turn around and let him take her into custody. It’s not like she had anywhere to hide.

@maddoxxhart
Sutton couldn’t stay still. The text from Maddox had rocked her world while she was folding any piece of laundry that Goose hadn’t sprawled himself across. Mom’s gone. Reina’s coming to get me. It was crazy; she had just seen Penelope days ago. The woman had been smiling and asking the mechanic to paint her nails again. They had been joking back and forth about Maddox; and all of a sudden that was gone. Barely able to breathe, Sutton forced her thumbs to type out a see you soon text as she grabbed a bag and filled it with clothes. The prospect could almost sense what was going to come next and she knew she had to be there for Maddox however she could.
So ten minutes after she got the text, she had found her way into Maddox’s house with the key he had given her a few weeks ago - one she’d have to give back soon enough if he was closing on a new house - and tried sitting on the couch to wait. Stillness brought on images she didn’t want in her mind, however. So pretty soon she was brushing dust off crown molding along the walls, fluffing couch cushions and doing yoga stretches until she heard a key in the lock. Almost running down the hall, Sutton got to the front door as it opened, revealing Maddox and his broken state to her. “Oh, Maddox..” Her voice was a hushed whisper as she moved towards her boyfriend to wrap him in her arms. “I’m sorry.”

@rcina
It was over.
He’d sat beside her and watched her go. Maddox stared at her face; trying to burn the thought into his brain. He was trying to remember her face, her calm expression giving him a bit of peace knowing it was over with but not enough to stop the quiet sobs under his breath. It isn’t how he’d pictured it, if he was going to be honest. He’d pictured some dramatic last breath or some glow of light coming in from the window, as if God (if there was one) was summoning her back to Heaven. That was something he’d prepared for rather than the call bright and early in the morning from the hospice center, telling him that today was the day. Maddox had told them there was no way today was the day, she’d been up and talking almost all day the day before when he’d visited. They’d joked about her hair and how she needed to really get some hairspray for it after she’d slept hard enough on it to leave her with hairs sticking straight up. But they tried explaining to him that that was Penelope’s last ‘rally’, it was apparently common and it was apparently long gone since the previous day.
Maddox wasn’t sure how much time had passed before a hospice worker approached him, asking him to sign some papers and to see if he was okay. But truly, he wasn’t. His face was raw from trying to wipe the tears that wouldn’t stop coming from his cheeks, his throat was hoarse as if he’d been in the desert for ages, and he felt so fucking alone. Maddox barely looked at the papers as he signed, giving them permission to do this and that and start the arrangements. Would anyone even come? He knew it was a dumb question, knowing that there’s no way he’d be alone-- he had a family to help him through. Family. The word struck a chord in him as he reached for his phone as he typed a text message addressed to Reina, Rowan and Sutton but he quickly deleted it, recalling the occasion of the day-- Reina’s birthday. The first two would be busy at her birthday dinner at Rhea’s so he opened the phone application to dial Reina. His hand shook as he brought it to his ear, barely able to get the words out once she answers.
“She’s gone, Reina. Mom’s gone,” he told her, unable to hold it together for more than a moment after the words leave his lips.

ROWAN THANE + tattoos
i. rowan’s old lady tattoo. she got it when she was 24, just before her and andy’s wedding. it was last minute and rhea and reina had surprised her with the appointment, but it was something she had already been thinking about. she got the traditional primordial snake, but added the flowers for her own personal touch. it’s on her right hip and thigh.
ii. located on the left side of her torso. rowan got this tattoo on the one year anniversary of her miscarriage. it consists of a blue butterfly, a row of sunflowers and the name ‘madison rhea’ written above it in script text.
iii. the symbol for queen of clubs on her right wrist. she got it drunk in new orleans on andy’s 21st birthday. andy has a matching king of clubs on his left wrist. jack and reina, who were with them, have the king and queen of spades.
iv. on the left side of her collarbone she has a minimalist sun rise with the words ‘here comes the sun’ under it. she got it because it was her favourite song, and to this day still is. it was her first tattoo, she got when she was seventeen and her mother had a fit when she saw it. she was grounded for four months.
v. a band of flowers around her left ring finger. she got it when she and andy re-married in baton rouge. she loves her ring and still wears it most days but she also really likes having something permanent there, too.
vi. a stethoscope on the back of her neck. it’s usually hidden by her hair but you can see it when she wears her hair up. rowan got it when she finished pre-med with a couple of her friends she graduated with.
vii. two large sunflowers with a bee on her right forearm. there’s no real meaning behind this one, she just got it when she was in her early thirties because sunflowers are her favourite and she was bored one day.
viii. money, dick, power. rowan barely remembers getting this tattoo. it’s on her left ankle and she does her best to never acknowledge it’s existence. it was another drunken new orleans decision featuring reina, ramina and sutton. it’s in reina’s hand writing and supposed to be a reminder of the priorities in life.
ix. tree of life tattoo on her right arm, on the back of her bicep above her elbow. the tree of life is a symbol of a fresh start on life, positive energy and bright futures. she got it when she finally started feeling like herself again after the death of her daughter.
#this has been in my fucking drafts since JULY 14..................#breaking news: local plant bitch has plant tattoos#anyway part 2 potentially coming later#lomkchardev#( is this darkness in you too | aesthetic. )#( bloom with grace | character study. )#idk how to tag this........... as usual#mine.

* / BIO: Her parents named her after the moon, but even the mood has a dark side. Artemisia, better known as Mimi, was the perfect daughter. Sweet, sophisticated, poised ─ everything two high ranking faculty members of the elite private spy university Gallagher could want in a daughter. Since birth, Mimi was groomed knowing she’d follow in the Sutton ( her mother’s maiden name ) legacy and attend the institute, same as her cousins would. As a child, the reality of it didn’t bother her. Along with the private self-defense and boxing classes with her father and weapons training with her mother, there were other more exciting extracurriculars she had to distract her.
Violin and horseback riding were just two phases that quickly came and went, but her love for dance always stayed. What was meant to be an after school activity soon spiraled into tumbling classes, weekend competitions, and many 1st place trophies. It was like an unspoken issue in her household. Though her love for dance ─ ballet specifically ─ eclipsed her love for anything else, so much so that she hoped to make a career out of it, her parents remained steadfast on her attending Gallagher. Upon entering high school, suddenly Mimi’s lack of time and the reality that her dreams would be crushed began to cave in on her. A usually happy and upbeat girl now only had four years left of freedom. And she held onto those four years the best way she knew how ─ by making memories.
Being sent to a spy prep boarding school 30 minutes from home was the best, and worst, thing her parents could’ve done. Separated from her dance team all week only elevated her anxiety levels, leading her to have full-blown panic attacks when things became too much. Desperate to find some means of control in her life, Mimi turned to what all the rich, spoiled, and rotten kids at her school were doing. Sex. Partying. A bit of crime. Shoplifting here, a quickie there. Mimi longed for some sort of...connection. Some control. Something to make her feel whole now that she was losing her grasp on the life she truly wanted. The weekends were her escape, where she could return home, or better yet to the dance studio, and just let out all of pent up energy weekly stressors had built up inside of her. And that’s how her life was for four years. Trying to survive the week, and let loose on the weekends. She didn’t care how her reputation preceded her. She didn’t care that past boyfriends had convinced her to do things ─ on camera ─ then leaked those things when broken up. It’s not like her reputation mattered anymore. It’s not like the nudes would stop her from going to Gallagher of all places. Not when she had the connections she had. So, she moved onto the next. And the next. Falling in love, falling in sin, and trying to keep her head above water.
When graduation day had come, something changed. Mimi had spent 4 years essentially learning strength and self-assurance in her day to day classes ( after all what was a spy who lacked confidence? a dead spy, that’s what ), so she proposed a deal with her parents. A year. Give her a year to follow her passion. If she failed, she’d go to Gallagher willingly. If not, she’d get to live her life the way she wanted. It took some begging, some pleading, a few fat tears, but eventually, they conceded. Mimi’s first destination was New York. Finding work was hard though, as was school. Places like Julliard and Joffrey already filled their quota for the year and productions had already been cast for the fall. She found luck, though, as a background dancer in a small production Off-Broadway. Better than nothing, and it was a great starter position as she was slightly rusty from not dancing as regularly as she did as a child. What she thought was a shot, only turned into tragedy. A few months in, she did one of the worst things that could happen to a dancer: she tore her ACL. Recovery was imminent but spanned nearly a year. And by that time, her time was up. No dream was fulfilled. No opportunity was given. Mimi packed her bags and began at Gallagher, just like she promised her parents.
Now a second year at the school, Mimi has grown accustomed to that drowning feeling that started during her high school years. If anything, she enjoys the numbness now. Anything is better than the pain.
* / PERSONALITY: Mimi is so glad she doesn’t look like what she’s gone through. From afar she’s still the perfect daughter. Selfless, because helping others distracts herself from her own problems. Kind-hearted, always smiling, the sweetheart appearance. But what most people don’t know is that the smile is for a show, because pretending is a lot easier than wallowing or taking out her anger on someone else. When first attending Gallagher, the loss of something so crucial to her had her on edge. So when a boy from her former school decided to taunt her with some private photos, she snapped. It seemed all those years of her boxing lessons with her dad finally came in handy. She appears to be delicate and soft, breakable even, but how can you break something that’s already broken? By day, she’s the girl everyone wants to know. But by night, when everyone’s asleep, she goes to the gym where a punching bag becomes her best friend. It’s the only form of control she has left.
* / WANTED RELATIONS: People who know her from her past, maybe some girlssss to explore her sexuality with????, at least one confidante, sexual tension, and so on.

@suttxnchambers
To say Reina is shocked to see Maddox arrive at the shop with none other than Sutton Chambers in tow would be an understatement. She hasn’t spoken to Maddox since his little meltdown at her house, and her last conversation with Sutton had been even longer before. Clearly, the girl had taken what Reina said at the hospital to heart if she’s now showing up to work with Maddox, looking like she’s the luckiest girl in the world. Reina admires the commitment, respects it even especially considering she’d heard the news that Allana Clarke was out of the picture for good. Sutton had obviously done her part, she hasn’t disappointed her and Reina is pleasantly surprised to find out she’s getting exactly what she wanted all along. All that’s left is getting back into Maddox’s good graces, but that won’t be hard. The kid is soft and he needs a mother figure — no matter how manipulative that mother figure may be — whether he thinks so or not.
Maddox is avoiding eye contact with her, which isn’t shocking in the slightest but she still can’t resist the urge to roll her eyes, and so Reina settles for the next best thing and beckons Sutton over to her. She’s curious to know just exactly how this all managed to pan out in her favor, but she won’t pry too much. God forbid she looks like she actually cares about anything. “I see you’ve traded in rides from your brother for something better,” she smirks, and although it’d usually be said with malice there’s none of it in her voice now. Sutton has earned her respect and she’s more than happy to show that. “You certainly work fast.”
