Reginald Gammon (1921 - 2005) Still Life with Rhododendron, 1970 Oil on Canvas ~ Despite the title of the work, the large plant in the image is not a rhododendron at all, instead it is most likely a philodendron which has a fairly similar name while looking fairly different in appearance. The second smaller pant is quite young and hard to identify but may be the subject Gammon is referring to in his title. Still Life with Rhododendron is one of a few still life and landscape images that Gammon produced. He is better known for his images of the human form which ran the gamut from important black personalities to nameless nude models. What is interesting about this work and other still lifes which he painted is the delicacy and subtlety of the form, tone and shade, which stands in great contrast to his more dramatic later work. Reginald Gammon’s work has ranged from explosive images of political and cultural struggle during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, to heroic images of African American leaders and Jazz musicians, to calm and peaceful still lives and landscapes. Born in 1921 in Philadelphia, he received a scholarship to study at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art, now known as the Philadelphia Museum College of Art. After serving in an all black unit in Guam from 1944-1946 he moved to New York City, the center of the postwar art world. In 1963 he joined the Spiral group, a group of African American artists that included Norman Lewis, Charles Alston, Richard Mayhew, Allen Hollingsworth, Romare Bearden, and Hale Woodruff. ~ #billhodgesgallery #gallery #nycgallery #artgallery #africanamericanartist #supportminorityartists #supportthearts #artworld #billhodges #billhodgesgallery #africanamerican #africanamericanart #blackartist #blackartists #africanamericanartist #africanamericanartists #blackexcellence #americanmaster #masterartist #reginaldgammon #stilllife #stilllifewithrhododendron #oiloncanvas #reginaldgammon #gammon https://www.instagram.com/p/B8fAG-sJX2U/?igshid=51l9sbl5tykn

"Freedom Now" (1963) by Reginald Gammon. From 'Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power,' published by D.A.P. & @tate⠀ ⠀ Curators @markgodfrey1973 & @zoe.whitley begin their essay: "We begin in 1963 with the formation of Spiral, a ‘group of Negro artists’ as they called themselves, who assembled in New York to work out a shared position on what it meant to make art within the wider context of the Civil Rights movement. 'Soul of a Nation' takes into account major events such as the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom; the murder weeks later of four little girls in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama; the commanding oratory and assassinations of both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.; the Watts Rebellion; unifying calls for Black Power and global pan-Africanism; the formation of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense and the subsequent violent suppression of its leaders; Angela Davis’s imprisonment; and the Attica Prison uprising. Many of the illustrated artworks refer explicitly to these events and people. As important is the wider cultural landscape in which visual artists were working; where John Coltrane revolutionized jazz music, Baraka set alight the literary world with contentious poems and plays, Marvin Gaye recorded What’s Going On, and Nigeria convened what was then the largest ever pan-African arts festival…"⠀ ⠀ Read more via linkinbio!⠀ ⠀ Please order from your local independent #bookstorehero — many are reopening or offering curbside pickup!
