when i was in highschool i met these people who had a music taste like i never seen (death grips, my bloody valentine, blah blah) and i would get starry eyed about it because it gave me so much wonder- where did they find all of these artists? i thought they had this some expansive and artsy music taste that was so different and superior and thoughtful then my kate nash and regina specktor. I was around 14-15, now im near 21 and im watching the “4chan most infamous albums” and yk what. they WERE just kids like me
#idk i find it kind of comforting unlocking this kind of knowledge#like it wasnt just them#so many people saw this list and are exactly like them#personal

I always really like it when people send you songs that remind them of your fic but can I know what songs you already have on your playlist? 🥺 for personal reasons 🥺🥺🥺
My writing playlist is way too long for me to write out the full list of songs, and if my Spotify account wasn't associated with my full name, I would just link you to it.
Instead, here are some of my top essential songs sorted into arbitrary categories, though a lot of them (especially the character songs) can work for multiple people.
Also, I won’t include other people’s suggestions on this list, but you can find them on the #ctb music tag with my topic lyrics from those songs. Give this post one (1) note and I’ll add my top lyrics for these songs too.
Please note that a lot of this is break-up music, but I interpret them as platonic.

Transcendental-Black Metal and the importance of critical thought
First off, a little background;
Hi! My name is catty (+ marcy/sasha/anne/etc.) and I'm a neurodivergent transfemme lesbian musician and artist. I have been into music my entire life. I was so pulled into music and the concept of sound as a kid that I would have a radio playing every single night, no matter what. Music encompassed my life and I would spend every waking moment I could listening to something new. My dad was my main source of music for my life until I had internet access, which ended up shaping what my style would become. Nine Inch Nails, The Postal Service, As Tall As Lions, The Crystal Method, just to name a few. I wasn't very into metal or any dark sounding music as a kid though. It scared the shit out of me. I would literally hear a song and have nightmares sometimes. This led my taste to be quite pop fueled and generally what you would expect a kid to like. Regina Specktor, Lily Allen, La Roux, The Beatles, OKGO, Of Monsters and Men, etc. (an embarrassing amount of brit-pop). I was this young little b*y who was shy and cute and listened to good happy music and did everything anyone asked of me. I was the perfect child. My grades were soaring and life was great! Things would quickly change. I discovered black veil brides through recommendation of a friend. I had a stupid little crush on this friend so not knowing what I was getting into I queued it up on Amazon fuckin Music. It was something I had never really heard before. The emotions and instrumentals were just so different and full and powerful. Experiencing BVB and opening myself up to experiencing new things in the music realm altered the course of my music taste and my entire life. I begged my parents to get us a guitar. After messing with one owned by a cousin, we were mesmerized. We wanted to play the cool intricate melodies and crushing riffs that we got addicted to. They put it off for a while but I got my first guitar of my own around age 10 after taking piano lessons for 5 years. I used my busted kindle fire to look for guitar tabs and would learn by ear if there weren't any tabs available. Being interested in guitar, particularly within the emo scene, opened me up to a whole new realm with music. I quickly advanced with learning guitar. When a song would feel "too easy" to play I would look for harder things to play. The harder things to play that aligned with my music taste were heavier into the alternative scene. Lo and behold, while my parents were very generic white parents, my dads side of the family was very into the alternative scene; with my uncle being a guitarist in A Perfect Kiss, my aunt being a renowned artist, my cousins all being musically and artistically inclined. Opening myself up to that side of my family put me on the path to who I was today. I was exposed to new artists and new concepts, new viewpoints and new thoughts. One of the earliest that I remember was the concept of meditation and the connections you can make within yourself during that time. I was never spiritually inclined at all (my parents weren't religious)- but this intrigued me and it helped me feel understood in some ways. Another would be The Dark Crystal, followed by Labyrinth. Openness of gender and expression, challenging the normality of those things. Little instances such as that would open my eyes and help me consider what was happening around me. "what is the right way to live? do I follow my parents or do I explore on my own? whats good in this world and whats not?"
"am I a girl? why do I feel repulsed by my body while my parents say that its part of growing up? why cant I wear the cute clothes?"
"why is it looked down upon to be gay? why are people with tattoos and piercings and dyed hair frowned upon? why can't I express myself in this way?" With everything in my life exposing me to new things and making me think critically about what was happening around me, I really felt an urge to start digging deeper into alt culture and expression. I began listening to PTV, BMTH, Breaking Benjamin, Tool, Nine Inch Nails. I watched the emo youtubers, I stole my parents makeup to do my eyeliner, I started dressing in black. Eventually, my first break into the "extreme" music scene was Suicide Silence and it revolutionized my view of music once again. The crushing guitars and thundercloud covered sky feeling that was exuding from the music..... It was good. It was a unique emotion and an experience to say, 'hmm... well that was good, so maybe I was wrong to restrict myself to a genre before". The concept of "good music" in my autistic brain was whatever music I liked at the time- but it was slowly turning into an open ended question rather than a definitive answer. Expressing myself through music became an outlet for me as I could make playlists tied to certain emotions and things I liked at the time, even memories. Through this, openness of expression became my most important point in life. You should be able to express yourself how you like, as long as you are not harming the livelihood of others. I came out in 2013. I have tried my hardest to invest in others and experiencing new things. My gender and my life, the way that I look at everything and perceive things, were influenced by taking a step back and looking at things critically. I have never looked back since coming out. It is so important to be open and honest and loving and I truly feel that music is an outlet into the world of connection and understanding. I have grown to seek out challenging music and to think critically about life happening around me. Rediscovering black metal and giving it a fair chance, would open my eyes in a way I never expected. Black metal is full of emotion and power and intention. Its such an aggressive genre because of the kvlt fans who denounce all fake black metal and will tie you to a stake (/hj). To experiment in black metal is something radical and new, and something thats frowned upon by a lot of people. In my case though, I think the more music in the world the better, so why not give it a try?
This is where Transcendental-Black Metal comes into play.
Liturgy. An experimental black metal project from Hunter Hunt Hendrix, a trans woman. The deviation of normality in black metal is something that stands out, and one that makes you take a step back and listen to the music closer. Usage of electronics, classical influence, swelling passages. There is so much substance to look at and consider, not only instrumentally but theoretically as well.
Black Metal is usually built off of feelings of depravity, nihilism, and the infinite. Depression, sadness, hurt. Satan, hell, the apocalypse. Never-ending suffering.
Transcendental-Black Metal is built off of affirmation, courage, and the finite. Triumphant, majestic, classically-inspired. Experimental. It challenges everything that Black Metal is, yet is it.
Transcendental Black Metal is in fact nihilism, however it is a double nihilism and a final nihilism, a once and for all negation of the entire series of negations. With this final “No” we arrive a sort of vertiginous Affirmation, an Affirmation that is white-knuckled, terrified, unsentimental, and courageous. What we affirm is the facticity of time and the undecidability of the future. Our affirmation is a refusal to deny. - Hunter Hunt-Hendrix
Transcendental Black Metal represents a new relationship to the Haptic Void and the self-overcoming of Hyperborean Black Metal. It is a sublimation of Hyperborean Black Metal in both its spiritual aspect and its technical aspect. Spiritually, it transforms Nihilism into Affirmation. Technically, it transforms the Blast Beat into the Burst Beat. - Hunter Hunt-Hendrix
